The Deadly Half Dome Cave | Hikers Caught in Yosemite Lightning Storm

  • Half Dome is a Yosemite icon and a great challenge to many hikers to climb to the top. On September 21, 2023, Jordan Dean, Josh Van Dyke, Jordan Swendener a couple of other friends set off for a typical hike on the trail to Half Dome, one of the most popular hikes in America. The day started off clear. The group checked the weather before they set out for a hike, and Jordan Dean remembers seeing a low probability of rain Thursday morning as they set out to summit Half Dome. At the base of the cables, there’s an infamous warning sign to hikers, warning of lightning strikes. To reach the top of Half Dome, hikers must climb the side mountain, about 400 feet or 120 meters, maintaining balance using metal cables. Nevertheless, they climbed, holding onto the cables. While it was sunny when they began the ascent, little did they know an incoming storm awaited them at the top, and a terrifying ordeal was in their near future.

Decades ago, a friend and I hiked from Tuolumne Meadows to Budd Lake for a "guerrilla camp" (illegal, being too close to the meadows for legal camping). We set up my North Face Oval Intention tent (a 4 season geodesic dome with crisscrossing aluminum tent poles under the rainfly), made dinner then hung our breakfast and toothpaste with counterbalance up in a tree. We drank some sort of liquor (I forget what exactly) while we chatted before sleep. In the dark, we suddenly began to hear raindrops hitting the tent that quickly increased to a near torrential downpour. Then, the lightning and thunder began and built to a crescendo; the thunder was so loud and occurred, some of it almost indistinguishable from the lightning. With each strike, it was brighter than day inside the tent and our ears rang from the ensuing thunder. We debated what to do, but ended up putting our boots back on, folded our ensolite pads and crouched on top of them until the storm passed. With shaking hands, we drank more booze before finally falling asleep. Talk about the luck of fools...

I've been in storms like that 3 times in the back country. The crackle of the lightning was ear piercing and when some of the close strikes hit the hair on my arms was standing straight up from the static electricity in the air. Talk about wanting to 💩your pants. And what do you do when your 10-20 miles off the road? Sit it out and pray.

remember as a child riding back with my grandfather on the bike... we had been gathering mushrooms in a forest 10km or so from the town where he lived (those were scarce days & food from the forest was a welcome addition to the diet)...
it had been an uncommonly warm and sunny early autumn day, but as we exited the forest, you could clearly sea dark clouds gathering in the distance. now, the road into town was a quiet ribbon of concrete raised between flat fields belonging to the local collective, at this time, devoid of people and even the most temporary shelter (the forest, though nearby, was across a marsh which was timely and energy consuming to get across).... we were struck by the lightning storm about half way to the city, though, I did not see where the bolts had struck, you could feel the tingling pangs in the feet and fingertips just before each clap thunder...
we finally managed to reach an unbuilt apartment block or factory block on the towns edge, where we sought shelter for the next few hours until the sky turned golden blue of a clear, if now cold, sunset.

Knowing how treacherous the wet granite rocks and boulders around the Merced River are - numerous people have slipped off them, been swept into fast-moving water, and drowned - the thought of ascending or, even worse, descending Half Dome on wet granite is beyond terrifying to me.

I've been in that cave. Some friends and I from Santa Cruz did this hike as a day trip back in the 90's and had a very similar experience though thankfully without being struck by lightening. We read the sign and there was only the tiniest cloud on the Western horizon. The fog rolled in and then came the hail. People were freezing up on the cables just like that day and others were climbing around them to get down. We waited for our friend who was one of the last people down the cables, then ran all the way down the trail to the car. While in the cave, we were dangling out feet over the edge and one of us lost a Birkenstock. It was such a beautiful sight watching it spin as it fell for so long until it landed on a ledge near the bottom of the face.

In 96 I was a contract timber faller on the Thunder Mountain fire. Three pairs of fallers were assigned the task of cutting out a helicopter landing area on the highest part of the ridge above the Chewack River. We started out early, forded the icy River and began the climb. Halfway up, just after we went up a cliff passing our saws, packs, gas jugs and saws up our human change, a thunderstorm began.
There wasn't a lot to do about it as we were half a mile up the mountain. Lightning kept hitting on the rocky ridge above us.
      It was an interesting situation.
The lightning moved on toward the east. We continued upward with a steady moderate rainfall. This was knocking the fire down, but they needed to get supplies to the hand crews, so we continued the climb.
At the top, we started falling the trees to create a clearing for the helispot.
Nearing completion a huge crack broke through our ear protection. A snag a 100 yards down the face we had just ascended, exploded spreading small and large chunks of wood across the landscape.
We had a quick discussion while gathering our gear. We had been bucking the trees into small enough pieces for hand crews to move, as they are notorious for running dull saws.
While preparing our exit there was a lull in the lightning. We dumped the last few dozen trees and headed east.
Our route to the nearest road took us till well after dark. It was raining a cold Cascade Mountains style rain.
Damn....those were the good old days. 😅

I use to offshore fish in the ocean and have been scared twice out there. Once coming in though a thunderstorm and although I'd lowered my antennas as well as taken down all rods we were still the tallest object out there. Neither of us were struck and it could be attributed to luck or the fact I had the best Co capt and navigator there is.
He went on every trip I took and I give Him credit for us all returning safely every trip, everyone happy , smelling a little fishy ready to go again.

Can't believe this happened again. If only they watched Outdoor Disasters! They would've been well aware that this cave's deadly past and was the worst decision they could've made. This isn't like the 1985 disaster where the hikers ignored hikers coming down, and the thunder and dark clouds rolling in. The weather was pretty good and deteriorated quickly as they submitted. Only mistake was going into the cave. Had a better chance just crouching down and hoping for the best. What you have forgotten to mention is that that particular cave is known to the Miwok people to hold a special yet terrifying ability to cause one to experience quantum jumping when inside the cave while it is struck with sudden amounts of electromagnetism (i.e. lightning). I would make sure these individuals check their noise bleeds and ensure whether or not their timeline is moving a consecutive/linear direction. That "are we in Denver" comment may be a symptom. Describing two women falling and landing on the same ledge (de ja vu) may suggest quantum jumping.
I suffer from quantum jumping. What you would call yesterday, I saw your shocking CZcams apology that has yet to happened. What you would call last week, I was surviving off condensation on pipes in the nuclear winter of 2047. What you called last month, I heard In Bev discontinued Bud Ice. All terrifying experiences.

I was leading a tour group in the park that day, and watched the weather deteriorate quickly around the domes and cliffs above the valley. When clouds start to form around Half Dome, it's already too late to turn around and safely outrace the weather, if you're on the crowded summit.

In times past I read a book about the lightning deaths that occurred on top of half dome in the 1980s. It is dangerous to be on the top of any mountain or dome peak during a thunderstorm. I once was on top of Mammoth Mountain at Mammoth Lakes when a thunderstorm was approaching. The workers at the facility on top of Mammoth Mountain gathered all the visitors on Mammoth Mountain and sent them down the mountain in the gondola cars before the thunderstorm arrived in the area.

They should build a Faraday cage open safe-room up there. The top area is huge and it wouldn’t be too ugly... I climbed Half Dome using the cables back in the 80’s. It’s a hard all day hike due to the 3000ft elevation gain from the valley floor and 12 mile length. There is a permanent warning sign about lightning storms before you get to the cables. Anyone who goes up there in the rain/potential rainstorm is crazy or stupid and will be a candidate for the Half Dome Darwin Award.

Electric field around a body is more intense where that body has protrusions, the pointier the protrusion the more intense the electric field.

The geography makes Yosemite a thunderstorm factory during the western US monsoon season. I've witnessed Yosemite spit out 2 massive thunderstorms from the eastern side of the Sierras before 11:00 AM. We were fishing on Grant Lake and watched as they were pinched off then floated on over to Nevada. With thunder & lighting, heavy rain & hail, with 60 mph winds, both storms wreaked havoc on Burning Man, shutting it down.

Or maybe it was a different day but it sounded exactly like the one you are describing, the only difference is a women died when she slipped on the cables. He has video of people stuck on the cables and the terrible weather. He said he had video of the women falling but out of respect did not show it. They definitely started their hike way to late and some were not in great shape. Many were crying. It was not good.

It's about where the cave is located. At the edge of one of the highest points in the valley. Lightning always looks for the shortest distance to touch the ground. The cave sits up at the tip of the face of a half dome. It always attracts lightning.

Naughty park rangers who failed to put a sign of some sort to not weather lightning in that cave after the last more deadly tragedy. Sheesh people! Just FYI, granite tends to conduct energy and therefore attracts lightning. The metal support structure also conducts energy. And BTW visitors and hikers - please come fully prepared - you definitely need the appropriate footwear. You're not taking a short walk in the park. I won't be doing that climb ever - lightning tends to follow me as I feel the energy it produces. No thank you!

There is no reason any of these disasters have to happen! The park service has any number of means to make the ascent up Half Dome safer and NOT dangerous. First, remove the ascent! Secondly, change the route to change the steepness, Thirdly, to replace the footing to make it safer and build the sides as wooden or string fencing to make it impossible to fall off the mountain, past the fencing, and have clip in cables that will allow carabiners to be attached and thus increase personal safety.

Why is it you and others can warn others and yet they think they know better. Granted the weather was nice, but a plan b just in case would have been ideal if possible. May be that cave should be blocked up to prevent others who foolishly go in there and to warn for the slightest cloud formation. On the other hand, maybe it is good that people get injured this way they do not forget and be grateful for the second chance in life that was granted them. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.
