  • Welcome to my vlog about the five stages of coming home as an immigrant. I'm sorry this took so long to post; I've needed some time to digest my emotions since returning to Canada.
    But anyway, in this video, I wanted to explain what and how I felt upon my return and offer some insight to those who might be going through a similar situation.
    With that, let us explore the five stages of returning home: excitement, rediscovering my roots, reverse culture shock, sadness, and acceptance. Enjoy!

    Oh man, the homesickness hits like a ton of bricks at the airport. I still vividly remember the time I was flying back to Canada, and I swear, I was on the verge of tears the entire journey. My seatmate on the plane must've thought I was a mess. It's just so darn hard saying goodbye, especially when I left my mom back then, who was battling cancer.

    State 4 and 5 is the worst. Because after getting used to and reconnected to the lifestyle, I start to fall inlove with it. Because I remember how peaceful and simple it is. I also miss my family who I love so much. When I’m in my last weeks and days, I start to feel waves of sadness that grows stronger each day as it gets closer to the day I leave. Because I try to spend as much happy and quality time, but the though and the anticipation of myself leaving soon makes me so emotional and sad. just got back home here in Canada, reminiscing details of what happened each day of the trip to cope of the sadness of going back to reality, Especially the night before I left, I bursted into tears when I saw my grandma, knowing I wont get to hug her anytime soon and painfully knowing she won’t have much time, and I woudn’t be able to spend as much time as I would want. Laying in bed, jet lagged, about to start University tomorrow, and also thinking of buying a ticket for next year again, as I don’t want to return every 3 or more years anymore, because too much change is happening, lesser memories and time I get.

    I went back home to the Philippines for a month and just got back to my city in Canada 3 days ago. The last time I went home was 6 years ago and I was too young to properly process the fact that I was leaving. I'm also an only child and I've been finding myself constantly checking for tickets so i can go home next year. I know it isn't likely because I'll be starting university soon, but I can't seem to take my mind off it. I know it's life and that this is how things go, but I can't help but hope that this isn't the end. I know there's a lot to do and I have a lot of things to still achieve in my life. But I can't seem to find the motivation or desire to do the things I once loved to do. I've come to realize how unhappy I am here, how lonely it seems to be so far away from the people who made me the happiest I've ever been. I love my friends. I really do. But, this is my family. The people who have shown me time and time again that no matter how many mistakes I make, they'll be there to help me get back on track. I haven't told them how I'm feeling because I don't want to bother them with my problems, especially when it's because I miss them. They know I do and I know they miss me too. I just wish I wasn't 10 thousand kilometers away from the people I love. From the cousins who make me feel alive. From my family.

    Thank you so much Rachel, Investing is not for everybody, you just need a strong stomach too see your portfolio go down. It might be wiser for a novice to start with Index investing, but it is not easy. My point is that when investing you need education first. To invest in growth stocks it is another level, definitely you need to know what are you doing.

    • @kendrickjibson222
      @kendrickjibson222 Před rokem

      From my own point of view, you need to invest smartly if you need the good things of life. so far i've made over $255k in raw profits from just 6 months into the market from my diversified portfolio strategy and i believe anyone can do it you have the right strategy, mutual funds takes long time but investing smartly is the key for short term. Most of us tend to pay more attention to the shiniest position in the market to the cost of proper diversification.

      @Evgenia Novikov My portfolio is very much diversified so it's not like i have a particular fund i invest in, plus i dont do that by myself. i follow the trades of Mrs Karen Gaye Gray. She is a popular broker you might have heard of. I can correctly say she's worth her salt as a financial advisor as her diversification skills are top notch, because i see that in her results as my portfolio grows by averages of 10 to 15% on a monthly basis, unlike i can say for my IRA which has just been trudging along, my portfolio just mirrors what she trades and not just on some particular industries of my choosing.

    • @Louisharvey56

      By following her trades do you mean copying her trades? I have heard about copying trades

    • @kendrickjibson222
      @kendrickjibson222 Před rokem

      @@Louisharvey56 Yes, exactly. It's all programmatic and automated, plus it's relatively much easier to set up and connect my accounts than creating a financial plan and drafting investment strategies myself, my account just mirrors her trades in realtime.

    I feel like the longer you stay during the vacation, the longer the sadness lingers. Last year in June, my mom and I went home to the Philippines and we stayed for two months. It’s already April yet I’m still homesick and I miss my family. As an only child it hurts to be away from the family you love and the country you cherish. Especially because we live in the Midwest, it’s hard to meet other Filipinos and have Filipino food. I’ve been searching for tickets to the Philippines like a maniac recently even though I know we won’t be able to go home this year since the tickets are expensive. I’ve been relying on videos like this to deal with homesickness, so thank you for posting this. It was really beautiful 🫶

      Hello Hello 👋 I've been looking in the comments of this video hoping I'd find one like this. I know you said you still feel homesick, but do you have any advice? Ways to stop feeling that way even if it's just for a little bit? Because I just got back to my city after a month in the Philippines. I turned 18 there and spent majority of my time surrounded by my cousins. Since I'm an only child, everything's just silent here. My parents have come to accept it, but I can't seem to. The last time I went home, I was 12 and didn't fully process what it meant to leave. What was in store for me. I haven't been able to get my mind off of it and am hoping someone can tell me something, anything to get my mind off it. Because all I've been doing the past 3 days is laying on my bed and crying.

    Very relatable! Two years ago, I just moved two hours away from home to another city in my own country, and the stages were exactly the same. The good news is, there comes a time at which ones feels a sense of belonging to everyone and everything and everywhere at the same exact time, and that feeling is absolutely one of a kind.

    As an OFW myself of almost 7 years (I left home when I was 21), this video is so spot on!! 100% me when I finally came home again after 4 years last December. #3 is so real. I’m at “home” but I feel alienated, I almost feel like a Karen which was not a good feeling. I just wish people back home can get a better quality of life because Filipinos all so deserve it.

The way Canada’s economy is at the moment and cant help but compare my life then in Cebu and now here.--Truly is a feeling of bricks going down on you when times are tough. However this video I kinda of gave me hope that it’s going to be okay for me. Hello Rachel! I would like to know your insights about my becoming a mature student there in Canada since I am turning 35 years old this year. Will I be eligible, and will it be practical? Or I would rather apply for PR directly? I hope to hear your invaluable thoughts about this. Thank you in advance!

    This hits hard especially after I just got back from Cambodia. As of writing, this is my third day back and I'm doing my best to keep busy and return to my normal routine. It's hard too given the massive timezone difference. As soon as I got off the Uber and carried my stuff inside my apartment, I bawled my eyes off. It was such a drastic change from having a noisy household to complete silence. The feeling was hard enough that it made me re-evaluate what I wanted from this path, was it worth it all if I meant that I would live so far from people that I love? I'm heading into the last semester of my degree and I'm so nervous about everything that comes afterward. Thank you for sharing your story, it sure has made mine more comforting to know that others are in the same boat.

      As per IRCC’s website, there is no set time frame for you to arrive in Canada before you begin your studies. Just make sure to give yourself ample time to adjust prior to your first day of school ☺️♥️

    A person can change overnight if her mind set is focus and not being honest on where you came from, it's like you just pick up the habits, characteristic of a Western mentality way of living like entering another Planet in which we called Earth, We Filipinos are simple, humble people, it is easy for us to adapt the Western ways. To me foreigners colonize the Philippines in the past and change our ways. Culture, Lnguage, religion even our names. I am still proud to be a Filipino. By birth you are still a Filipino not a Canadian.

    If you think 5 years is a long time, try 43. You’re culturally shocked only when you want to be.
    I think to say “you’re rediscovering your roots” is too dramatic for being away for only 5 years.
    One tries to discover his or her roots if he/she had been born in a foreign land at least or been in a country for at least more than a generation or more within centuries even, that had no idea of what their country of origin is like. Case in point: Trudeau may want to “re-discover his roots” by going to France.
    There are immigrants who have even become citizens and been away for even 20 or more years still know their roots enough to not necessarily be discovered. There are tons internet TV, CZcams videos that keep all of us from ignorance of what where we all came from is like.
    You’re only alienated when you allow your feelings to do so as a result of conceit, patronization and condescension.
    My take on your video, much as it is enjoyable to watch, (I give credit when credit is due) is that you want to project a documentary of a country that you are alien to equating to a foreigner who was never in the country to begin with. That does not realistically happen to 5 year out-of the-country immigrants.

    Oh Rachel your fluency and proficiency in English is marvelous in my viewpoint. I wonder how I got 7.5 in the speaking part of the IELTS and yet cannot get my message across as well as you do. I do adore your command of English and wish that one day I become as fluent as you. Cheers and keep up the good job👍
