During an interview with Sky News on Sunday, former England and Liverpool footballer John Barnes criticised the BBC’s decision to suspend Match of the Day host Gary Lineker over supposedly breaking the broadcaster’s “impartiality rule”.
Barnes added that the British broadcaster’s coverage of the Qatar World Cup “was anything but impartial”.
Lineker was suspended last week after he shared a social media post comparing the language British MPs used while discussing the country’s asylum policies to that of Germany in the 1930s. Many of his colleagues effectively went on strike in support of the sports pundit after his suspension and forced the broadcaster to air the popular football programme without any on-screen staff.
The BBC lifted the suspension on Lineker on Monday and announced it would be reviewing its social media policies
