@@davidnewell7183 Racism yes but I don't agree with the feelings he said can't be associated with white people as well. Yes, there may be only one black person in a room with 20 white people but if the idea is of standing out, any different personal features e.g. maybe being very thin or fat, or having an aesthetic difference to others in a room can make someone stand out and feel very self conscious. The feeling of alienation is not exclusive to black people so the idea that white people couldn't empathise with the feelings associated with being a victim of racial abuse I don't agree with. Racial abuse is a tool to demean black people but skin colour alone isn't the only tool individuals can use to demean others so I don't agree with Lewis.

I appreciate that people these days are easily offended. But you cannot blanket every complaint under that umbrella of permanently offended as you put it. There is in some cases as this one a case to be answered. Dismissing off hand every case will inevitably give bigotry a win. The picture was reminasent of the racist tropes paddled in years gone by and the least Silva needs is an education on how that picture which he posted on the Internet can be taken as offensive. If he had kept it between him and Mendy than there is no case but opening it up to the whole world to see without the inner context of the relationship they have is problematic and is rightly questioned. John B has a valid point when it comes to the fact that black and thick lips are not offensive but a natural appearance of some black people, what he is failing to understand or refuses to admit it that as much as we would like to change the narrative its a process not an event. It won't happen over night we need to talk about it and eventually in years to come it might be okay but historically that image has been used to disparage, mock and ridicule black people and yes we will find it offensive regardless of context because there has been no dialogue on this issue.

The part where he says you can’t relate to Liam neeson because he is white but you can relate to the black community is the entirety of the problem. People see themselves as a race, don’t think they can relate to other races because of skin colour and life experiences. @josephyohannes496 Před 4 lety +2

Ye "we should be able to relate to every human experiences", but we live in a radicalized world due to socioeconomic history. This started a long time ago and has solidified and cemented itself in to culture and politics of modern day societies and affecting the way people as individuals connect with the world with interal identity conflicts individuals suffer with having issues with how they see themselves vs how others see them leading to feelings of social exclusion with a variety of negative results combined with other factors. Race and racism is perpetuated and on going currently with it so firmly intertwined with global socioeconomics, like for example the medias attention on islamist terrorist attacks where they heavily focused on Europe and US but the majority were and are outside Europe but don't receive no where near as much attention or sympathy for other countries. You also have drugs testing in brown and black people country for treatment and cures the people don't even need or want and neglect the ones they need. It's simple poc lives matter less on the global scheme of things and like I pointed out it's because of history. Its cemented itself soo much in to culture there are comedians that have made their career of racist jokes and a lot push the boundaries on what is acceptable. If someone accident slipped up and said it at a news channel your can expect them to lose their job, even if it was intended as a joke. I myself like many others have exchanged jokes with friends that push the boundaries but wouldn't dare do so in the public sphere because they are offensive Silva should just get a little slap on the wrist and that's about it.
Back to the point on experiences. Radicalized world means no we can't really relate but we can be educated. I wouldn't expect a man with no child to understand what's it's like for a man to lose his, I wouldn't expect a lion to know what it is like to be a Chicken, so why does it matter what the lion has to say on the chicken? Shouldn't we just listen to the chicken.

Barnes gave them realness, realness these two will never know. Both of them want to be offended and tried to divert and throw strawman arguments such as the headlines to defeat John. Instead John gave them facts, insight and stuck to his guns.
It's people like them two who are the issue, supposedly Darren Lewis knows the ethnicity of every talksport caller. Happy to throw out stereotypes via his hypocrisy yet cries foul when it suits him.

People call Messi the midget now and then, do you think that stops Messi from being the best? OWN WHO YOU ARE!!!! If you want others to respect you, first you need to be confident on who and what you are. If you are fearful, some people will feel that and give you hell. John Barnes: “What is offensive?”
Other guy: “It’s comparing a black person... to a non-human”
What a joke! That’s like getting offended when someone uses a metaphor or simile to compare. Is it offensive when someone says “you’re as fast as a cheetah?!” Obviously not! The comparison between the cartoon and Mendy was nothing negative so I don’t understand why this guy thinks anything of it. I know racism happens all the time and it’s honestly terrible but it’s reasons like this guy that helps continue racism! He places his anger towards the opposite race and that makes him racist himself. He’s not really justified what exactly makes the post racist and instead his reaction shows how he has racism against white people...racism stops when everyone learns to get along with one another and show genuine respect and appreciation for one another. It doesn’t stop by continually displacing anger towards others that do not deserve it. I can see how some people would feel offended by that post. It was a stupid post but to go as far as to call Bernardo racist is uncalled for. He’s such a kind person who like everyone of us makes mistakes. Move on and learn from this!

Couldn’t agree with John more. Think that people saying this type of thing is offensive is stopping things from progressing in terms of equality

People these days, "I am offended by a joke that the person it was aimed at wasn't offended by, also I decided it's racist because reasons". Makes a mockery of people that are actually suffering real racism, and I'd argue sub conciously it is fueling racism to some degree.

I wish these young guys with potential would listen to JB..he's lived real racism,he knows real racists,he's condemned real racism. And he has the correct recipe for moving forward. To be black is not offensive,to have big lips is not offensive.

"I personally found it offensive..." because it meant that I could take a position of moral superiority over another and try and shame them into submission. I can also use the whole situation to further my position and career by guilting people. Brutal honesty from TS!

Both John Barnes and the commentators have excellent points.
I agree with the commentators. The chocolate cartoon character in question does resemble racist golly dolls and racist black and white minstrels. I was offended by it for this reason.
Also, I agree with John Barnes. For centuries, Black people have been ridiculed for our natural features that differ from Europeans’. We should celebrate our natural look and not let thick lips or broad noses be seen as a point of shame.
I don't agree with the idea that this is PC gone mad or any of that. When you make a joke public, people might get offended. If you don't like that, keep your jokes private or, better yet, find less offensive jokes.
