Do My Builds Even Work? The Ecobulb Riparian Jungle Now
Vložit
- čas přidán 4. 05. 2024
- In this one, we take the two month look at the Ecobulb Riparian Jungle. This was one of my favorite projects so far. I had a lot of fun building it and I think it's a very unique looking piece. Many of you were wondering, though, what does this piece look like now? In fact, some of you were wondering if something like this can even work.
I've decided to turn this one into an update and I think you'll be pleased with the results. Let me know what you think about the progress of it thus far. Also, I should mention that part of why it look different now is because it's against a white background, which lightens things up. Anyway, enjoy the video!

It was probably a long time coming for me to discuss a lot of this in the video. Like I said, I have before, but not really to this extent. One thing I should mention, though, is about giving the projects away or selling them. It's not something I'm apposed to, but I honestly have no idea how I'd ship any of this... Is there something I'm not thinking of? Definitely something to work out moving forward. Anyway, let me know what you think, enjoy the video, and have a great weekend!
I love all and every of your videos!!!
Instead of dismantling can u sell some of them that would be great
@@gambinos27 hey u a swifty too
I think selling and shipping them is an awesome idea! Couldn't you dismantle them just enough to package them and people could use your video as a guide to put it back together? I know it is extra work, but a lot of your fans are willing to compensate you for it just to have one of your builds.
At the very least, cast more of your hidden temple parts and sell those!
I think the humour you use to address those negative comments was amazing, especially by making the video super educational. Thanks for the update, hoping to see a buggy build sometime in the future.
By this point people only embarrass themselves with hate comments, and I'm here to laugh at them.
I never seen someone deal this good with haters on CZcams this far
Agree this was a right proper f off response video🤣🤣
He was politely calling everyone out haha
tanner, i’ve watched all your vids and i want to let you know that you have inspired me to get into the hobby. And now i want to pursue a career in marine biology and love frogs and like to observe them in my local pond. even though i’m all the way here in australia you’ve impacted me so much! i’m currently starting to build a 45x45x60cm crested gecko enclosure and it’s coming together nicely, directly inspired from your techniques. thank you for everything, your work is amazing.
You won't be able to get a crested gecko in Australia. You will need a reptile license and you can only keep reptiles native to Australia. Don't worry though there are some amazing species of reptile in Australia.
@@nathanlitjens5905 I'm from the UK so I don't know what the licensing process is all I know is you need to get the basic licence to be able to keep reptiles but unfortunately a crested gecko won't be an option for you. That is unless you know someone with them illegally in Australia.
@@nanoreefer1622 that’s a bummer, maybe a tree frog then?
@@ausfrogs yeah have a look at whites tree frogs they are awesome.
@@nanoreefer1622 im gonna have to make it a paludarium then! can’t wait
I've never seen comments like that before, it's always overwhelming positivity, so I hope he really had to dig to find those. Anyone who has watched more than one of your vids knows how much thought and effort you put into each build.
I really don't think it's very often at all. People just have a tendency to focus/fixate on them because they're the ones that invoke the emotion.
@@MidwestFarmToys or because their the annoying ones who express their incoherent opinions so much you have to tell them to stfu because their always wrong and trying to be loud and seen lol. its weird they don't find that embarrassing.
@@MidwestFarmToysI think he saw the opportunity to make an educational and funny section. It made me laugh
I've found that in a lot of pet keeping hobbies, there is a lot of faux knowledge floating around that is a mixture of marketing and people projecting emotions onto animal behavior. Fish bowls being bad for example probably stems more so from the fact that they have poor filtration and are small in size. And not as much from "distorted view". But a lot of people project "imagine if you lived in a small bowl with distorted images all day" onto the fish. And I'm sure that aquarium sellers benefit from selling larger aquariums.
If the animal looks healthy and behaves healthy, it's probably safe to say that it is doing just fine.
I agree. The issue with fish bowls was always they are too small, and many times improperly maintained, for the fish put in the bowl. Many do not grasp how big a specific type of fish can get. I've never heard of the view being an issue. I think this build is fantastic. 👍
@@christamarch947 The view is a newish one people have made up in the internet age. People used to know that it's because bowls are (historically) too small, but somewhere along the way someone felt that wasn't enough so the myth of the view distortion was born.
@@OregonOutdoorsChris Except for the fact that certain fish actually do get stressed looking through a distorted image, including Pleco and Betta fish.
@@AfromanRants Except there aren't. It's a completely made up pile of bs.
The phenomena people say don't stress fish don't exist in nature at all (flat glass panels looking into human spaces). While the phenomena that people say stress fish are omnipresent (distortions like those caused by wind and waves, that also in reverse lens light and cause caustic networks).
A goldfish thats often kept in a small bowl needs at least a two gallon tank, if I remember right.
Don’t put any fish in a small bowl.
It's almost like nature was made to maintain itself without the use of man-made filters, and that someone who is well educated, skilled, and experienced in the field is able to replicate those environments 😜 Thanks for the educational video and lovely builds as always.
Nature doesn't maintain itself when things are stagnant though.
@@MidwestFarmToysincredibly, lakes do have fish with very little water flow
@@Twohomst yes, But scale matters.
Lakes are a little bigger than 10 gallons or whatever this jug is and at least have some small amount of current/waves keeping things moving and oxygenated and they are also deep enough not to be so bright with sunlight at the depths that it gets swarmed by algae.
Even most ponds which are massive in comparison to this are green and gross no matter how much wildlife are in them because the water stays relatively still and they are generally shallow such that sunlight reaches the depths which keeps the water warm and bright which is ideal for algae
@@MidwestFarmToys @Twohomst You're both only half-right. Scale matters, of course, larger systems will be more inert and harder to disrupt. The sheer amount of water in a large aquarium will buffer against rapid changes.
But it's not like natural lakes are exempt from this problem either. Lake eutrophication is a frequent issue. Algae growth can easily take over a lake and make it very oxygen-poor within a few months, limiting the number of fish species that can survive there.
Nutrient availability is the main thing driving algal blooms - sunlight is abundant, but nutrients are the limiting factor. A lake "tipping"into the eutrophic state is usually caused by increased nutrient input, whether it's fertiliser runoff from nearby farms or lots of dead organic matter.
Compare a setup like this, where limiting the nutrients in the water is a pretty major part of the design. People commenting on the previous video are obviously ignorant of the fact that the waste fish excrete, ammonia, is in a form that is directly taken up by the roots of aquatic plants. As long as dead plant matter is removed from the water so it can't decay (and add nutrients to the water), and as long as the fish population is kept sparse, the tank is in no real danger of "tipping".
One tip from Mark's Aquatics I saw was to use an air stone when doing water changes, that prevents the smaller creatures from getting sucked in
How would an air stone stop that?
Nothing makes me happier than seeing a ‘serpa design’ notification

Hi Serpa, I never saw myself getting into terrariums, vivariums and aquariums... I recently stumbled upon your channel while looking for an outlet to avoid a bout with depression I could feel coming on... One week later, I've built a self watering plant pot with a moss terrarium waterfall feature. I am excited to start learning more about small animal care and adding new members to my family slowly. I know the chances of you seeing this are fairly slim but Thank you! I have been looking at nature and simple things at the dollar store completely differently this week and I feel this is a fascination I will have for a long while. I am in tears right now, but thankfully it is not from depression, they are tears of relief and joy. Thanks again.
What a great story about staving off depression. I hope you share your story with behavioral health channels too! Good luck and thanks for sharing!!
That was really interesting! It takes your builds from "awe it's so pretty" to "omg I could actually do this?" It demystifies the long term engagement.
Ever since getting into the vivarium hobby, I've definitely found that day-to-day maintenance is the easiest part. If you nail the setup, maintenance is just an occasional pruning.
Same. I have gotten into keeping fish now too, mostly because someone gave me a fish they were about to get rid of. For some reason, I had always believed that keeping a planted aquarium was incredibly difficult to do, but I’ve gotten more familiar with the hobby now and I find it’s definitely easier to maintain everything, as opposed to having to set everything up.
True, setup really does take the most time and effort but when it's done right with any type of bioactive setup, all you really need to worry about is controlling the flora and keeping the fauna fed and healthy. Setup is still my favorite part because I'm not fond of maintenance, but that's why I only have planted fishtanks, especially stem plants do a lot of the work for me and I've even learned to accept the duckweed invasion I can never get away from since it grows so rapidly it's really just free filtration and free food to my herbivores when it comes time to cut back on its numbers. Free salad is nice, though duckweed control is the majority of the maintenance I do ^^'
I will definitely appreciate content of revisiting old scapes and seeing how they evolved and maintained. Cheers!!
I love when you buck back to the negativity. You're such a nice person and a total professional. I hate to see the idiots put in 2 cents when the bill is paid. Keep killing it!
The thing about you is that, as experienced and knowledgeable you are about what you do…. When something indeed does NOT work out: you admit it and show us, so we can all learn.
You’re humble enough to admit that even you still don’t know everything and also that some times unexpected things can indeed happen. Then you share the knowledge and experiences with us.
So, I would say that these comments come from people new to the channel, or people with envy for your work.
But honestly, one of the things I love about your work is that it does not disappear after the vid, like it never was. You see it in the background, you do updates. It’s not forgotten. You build beautiful works of living art that actually keep on living and growing.
Much love from Curaçao ❤
I love how people, who have no idea what they're talking about, try and mug you off. You're clearly an expert and I love the way you calmly prove people wrong!
It's so incredibly rare though. I've scrolled around in a ton of his videos and you have to work kinda hard to find them.
I always love the sarcasm in your response videos. 😂
People who get hung up on stocking standards almost never take plants into account. Imagine if a natural pond had to keep track of how many critters were inside it!
This is one of my fav pieces of yours. It may look small for the fish but if you look at it from above its kidna big. I think the pure negative comments come from new people to this channel who dont know much about how terrariums/palundariums work? Never seen one honestly lol
The introduction got me rolling on the floor 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the additional context! For me, the maintenance is what intimidates me the most, and I don't think I'm the only one, especially if you have ADHD like i do lol.
Thank you for the follow-up on this build! & your sense of humor. LOVE the 'fish-eye view' with you waving to them!!
The beginning of your video was cracking me up! 😂 Love your sense of humor style. The fish eye view with you waving was cute. That container scape is awesome! Love the rice fish and ramshorn snails. Thanks for the update on how it is doing. What an amazing piece!
That’s definitely something I wondered about, “I wonder if he just has hundreds of projects all over his house, where does he keep all them”
I would love to see regular postings, maybe once every month or two, of update videos where you showcasing the maintenance of a couple recent builds and giving a look at how things are growing in and what did (and occasionally didn't) work well. That would be fun to see how things are coming along, help explain and demystify the process of caring for projects long-term, and also show folks that it's ok if some plants do better than others or to sometimes have to tweak a setup after seeing it run for a couple weeks.
Keeping intricate closed-system projects does still require upkeep, and seeing how that can be accomplished would be really educational (and help set reasonable expectations) for people who want to try it themselves at home.
He's definitely already doin those kinds of vids XD
he does do these lol
I would actually love to see more maintenance and update videos! I really enjoy seeing how these projects change and develop over time (at least the ones that get to exist for longer than just the duration of a build 😁)
people have such nerve online 😂 you've dedicated your life to this stuff. even if something you do doesn't make sense to me, i can tell you're doing it for a good reason
For anyone looking for a similar bottle design to this one: Keywords to look for are "Carboy" and "Demijohn" - these are brewing containers. The larger they are, obviously the more expensive. He got his an absolute steal for the size. There are also PET plastic versions in various shapes and sizes that are great for setups as they're incredibly easy to drill and weigh very little.
I just love your sassy sense of humor while still being super informative when dealing with comments. The comments and community here are one of the most positive I've ever seen on YT, but of course negative (or well-meaning but ill informed) responses can happen, and you responding with humor is so on brand for this channel, which is why it's one of my favorites. Keep up the good work and keep being you!
While I never considered that you were not taking care of your livestock, I have wondered to myself 'how is he maintaining that?' - I appreciate you covering it in this video 😎 Thanks Tanner💕👍
I never doubted you, but I do appreciate the insight about what it takes to maintain these things, since you always make me want to try new things!
I loved revisiting a previous project, especially with lively inhabitants like the rice fish. It’s more time to appreciate the final work of art!
Yes! We get invested in the animals too. I always love updates.
Your videos inspired me to make my first terrarium about a year and a bit ago. That one has survived 474 days and it’s been super fun watching it grow. A few days ago I gave it away to my friend who is moving away from PA to FL for college and after. I love your content and I hope others can appreciate terrariums too.
I never doubted your judgement, but thanks for clarifying! The fish look happy, healthy, and characteristically fishy, so I don't think they are "suffering" from any major maladies, but seeing you work in the setup and explain your intentions for the build was very educational. Thanks! 🙃
Such a sincere and humble artist, I very much the occasional flex. I have 3 plastic-bin-moss gardens using your how-to's as guidance all going on 3 years old with nearly zero maintenance. Keep sharing your failures and successes!
I feel like your videos do a great job at framing how we could do this ourselves and I have always felt that some projects were to just display the process for us. It never, to me, felt like all these projects were meant to last forever. Especially when most of them have natural plants and foliage. Love your work and thanks for inspiring me to try this for myself. We have a bunch of moss that naturally grows on our land. I’m really close to making my first moss terrarium. Thank you for the education.
It makes me happy knowing the health and happiness of your animals is paramount
Loved how the fish were like: "We've been posing long enough now. Treats!"
Also, many thanks for explaining everything about your projects in a calm voice. It makes it easier to understand as I have no knowledge about aquatic life, but I like to learn and your voice helps with that. So, many thanks from me :)
You gotta love all the internet experts. Keep doing you Tanner. Your builds are beautiful.
I tend to watch your videos often, I am more of an aquarium person than a vivarium or terrarium person, but ever since I started watching, I've done little projects that I find fun and interesting. It's always awesome to see the critters thrive in something you have created. Keep up the great work Tanner!
I am still aquarium myself but, after watching "Plant Life Project" and "SerpaDesign" I am adding riparian plants to all my tanks.
@@kermitdd Riparian plants sounds like it adds a lot of dimension/depth to your tanks! It's tough for me because my cats love to try and get in my tanks lol, so I try and keep lids on so plants that go above the rim aren't always an option for me, but maybe if I can find something small, I can attempt to set that up in the river scape I want to attempt. We shall see though!
i love the way you handled the imprudent comments
you validated peoples concerns, regardless of backhandedness of the comments, by proving them false with thorough evidence and brilliant explanation. I like that the focus of the video was education, not bashing commenters who were incorrect!
loved the intro!
Its quite sad that people are so doubtful even though your setups are always filled with plants, easily allowing a long term setup
Hey Tanner, I appreciate your thoughtfulness in approaching the criticisms / critiques you've received, whether in good faith or not! I think your care and attentiveness to the plants and animals in your home is obvious, and I hope you don't change your videos to cater to the meanest common denominator. Keep growing and learning and creating! We'll support you all the way,.
I would love more follow ups on builds! Great video as always
There's a heart on one of the branches holding the vivarium! 😍😍😍
"My catalog speaks for itself" I know that's right! Your tanks are so wonderful.
Just realized this is a year old, I've been binging these videos between starfield breaks lol
I can't believe people would question this build or any other with the expertise you have! Its a beautiful piece 🙂
Mate you dont need to explain yourself and your work at all! Your work explain it all. Keep up the good work
This kind of video is DEFINITELY appreciated. I don't think it's about justification, it's just about it's nice to know how to do the maintenace on those things, and also how to improve future ones.
LMAO the intro was hilarious, loved it! Thank you for addressing the shape though. I was wondering. When I tried to search it people would only talk about small fish bowl so it's not very comparable. Putting a camera inside to check the distortion is a good idea!
Awesome! I'm so glad you did an update on this build. Was kind of wondering if maintenance was going to be difficult with the shape of the container. Besides, I think rice fish are cute and any video with them makes me happy.
Yeah, an update video. I love seeing how builds are currently doing
I don't feel that you need to justify yourself, but I guess it's good that you address comments that are possibly relevant. You have inspired me and many others because your enthusiasm and knowledge is evident. I love your work - don't let them get you down eh?
I'm glad you explained the story behind how you acquired the container. It was kind of a happy story.
this is one of my favourite builds! i wish i had the energy to have an aquarium (and maintain it) but i sadly don't so this is the next best thing. the fish are also super neat looking, the petstore near me only has tetras so i really enjoy seeing something else :)
Thank you for the update
Great video. I appreciate these maintenance/update videos that go along with your builds. This sort of follow up provides a lot of context for the videos you make documenting the build process. You rule!
I really appreciate maintenance and info videos like this. It's a great sanity check for ideas I've had and gives me the confidence to try more advanced builds. Thanks man.
Just wanted to say I absolutely love your channel!! The design ideas and the knowledge I gain from watching you is brilliant, any negative people have the option to just click off because it says way more about them than it will ever say about you, if anyone thinks you should keep every build should pay for the property to house it all lol, negative people are just not smart, you are! Keep up the amazing work!!!!
I love to see more updates on past projects that are still around. It is very interesting to see what you learned and how a build worked out in the long run.
Appreciate the update and details. Well done.
Love your work and the inspiration we get from it. Great update, all the best!
Thanks for the update
Thanks for the update and maintenance tips! I also appreciate your explanations.
Loved this format, Tanner. Highly informative. And I think it’ll be really valuable to include the maintenance requirements i the build videos of future projects. Keep up the good work!
I really enjoy your update videos. I somehow managed to stumble across some of your very early videos, back when they were very infrequent. Earlier this year I came across one of your update videos and was reminded that I had seen the original builds. I was really happy to see not only had you continued to create videos but turned it into a full time job. It's awesome to see be able to make a living doing something they love. Keep up the great work Tanner I look forward to seeing what amazing projects you create in the future. Oh and please more updates!
It's awesome thanks for the build and the revist.
I appreciate all your updates! It took me several months to start making successful terrariums and your videos really helped. It also helps that you're so honest about what worked and didn't work for you. It's useful info, and reassuring for someone who hasn't been doing this for very long.
Enjoyed the video. Appreciate the work you put into these!
Inspirational & instructional as usual! Thanks 😊
Definitely one of my favorite builds of yours. I love it so much I've been constantly looking for a similar container since you posted this!
I don’t think you owe us an explanation. But I, for one, really appreciate your insights on design and love the updates on how things work out.
One of my favorite builds by far! Thanks for the upkeep explanation! One day I'm going to make a glass jar Riparian with all the knowledge I've learnt watching your channel Tanner. Cheers!
Maintenance vids like this are really helpful! You've inspired a lot of us to get into the hobby ourselves, so seeing how you do maintenance is really educational!
Thanks for all your helpful builds. My aquascaping and plants I grow have grown stronger and healthier than ever before.
Hands down the best builds on CZcams.
Always appreciate the updates
Glad you did an update video.
You and your channel are amazing! I thoroughly enjoy all your projects! Keep up the good work!
always love the update videos. it's great to see how the animals are doing, keep up the great work :)
You’ve been a huge inspiration to me and my joy for this hobby. Keep it up! Love all the content, gotta keep us posted on the 600g vivarium!
Yooo! You're so good! I have an aquatic jarariam that I've kept going and thriving since 2014, a while before I found your channel. But when I did find your channel I was so excited. It's been amazing watching your growth over the years. I'm also way excited to see a new video of yours pop up.
I always grab a snack to watch your videos, I'm currently eating 5 mcdonalds cheese burgers.
Thank you for the update ☺️
Also, I think it would be helpful to hear about maintenance, now that you mention it!
Love your stuff. There will always be jerks, don't let it get to you too much ❤
It was really nice seeing the things that go on we don't often get to see. Great episode!
I'm loving all the info! I'm looking to get into the hobby because of your vids, but I've been really concerned about maintenance and stuff, and I really appreciate that you're gonna add more info about it in future videos! It's so exciting! I absolutely love this build and I'm glad you addressed some concerns that other people had about it, and love your funny skits in the beginning.
Просто невероятно. Как же много у Вас идей для творчества. Я восхищаюсь Вами.
I love this!!!! One of my favorites❤
You are so professional. This was a great video to watch. Everything from the commentary to the camera angles to the editing. You did a great job of responding to criticism, honoring their concerns, and standing firm in your power. Been watching your channel for several years now and this video confirms why you are a favorite
I think the only drawback with the shape of the container is the narrow opening, which makes it hard to work with. The bulb shape gave me an idea: you can experiment with hanging containers which appear "floating in the air"
Hey Tanner, been watchin a year or so now and I really admire how you have grown your channel. With each step in your life you learn so much and adjust the channel accordingly, just like one of your builds.
Looking great! 😊
Honestly love seeing these updates. I like knowing what worked and what didn't, not because I expect builds to fail, but more as info to take along when I myself try my hand at it.
It was another fun video to see again! Thanks for sharing this update :)
I had no idea there were issues with a round bowl for fish (I don't have any aquatic pets in my home and my pond outside is square..) Lesson learned today :D
I can imagine, due to the sheer size of the container, the fact that it's round but really big, might be why the fish view isn't bad all.
As for people who commented with those comments... I think, if they watched the earlier video properly and had seen other videos made by you, they would know these are things you think about and have solved in one way or another in the project.
It's good you showed it, nonetheless, just to give us all some extra knowledge :)
I wish you and your family a great weekend!
love all your builds! you have inspired me with alot of your designs. keep being yourself and continued success will continue.
Your work is amazing, Tanner!! You always put SO much skill & thought into each one of your pieces, and it shows!! I love your videos, watching you is what got me into the hobby in the first place. Thank you for brightening so many people's lives & rock on, man!!!
Thanks for sharing the stories behind your good work. Love your creations. Love your videos.
I love your videos man. I'll have my first aquarium up and going soon thanks to your informative videos. Keep em coming as long as you can, please
really liked this video. seeing the maintenance and how the build has matured is fun. love all your builds.
Dude your awesome. Definitely an inspiration for me. Love the way you made a whole video just to adress concerned comments. Keep up the great work, your defiantly on top of your game!
Great video, Tanner! Love your candour and honesty.
You inspire me to keep building and enjoy this amazing hobby! Thank you!
