- Welcome to a day in the life of a Google Software Engineer! Today is my first day back in the Google Mountain View office in 2021 and I'm super excited to show you around.
Google is known for having fun work environments and awesome perks in the office, so I am excited to show you what that actually looks like! I am a software engineer based in the Bay Area working in Silicon Valley at the Google headquarters.
In today's video, I'll show you what a day in the life of a software engineer looks like in an actual office. I'll show you my commute, the Googleplex (Google offices), what I do during the day, and some of the fun, quirky parts of Google.
Watch this if you've ever wondered what a day in the life of a Google software engineer looks like đ
A little bit about me: I studied computer science in college (BS and MS). Google is my first full time job; and I've been working at Google for 4 years as a software engineer. I work on building the home screen of the Google Pixel đ± and Android đ€.. I currently live in the Bay Area, CA đ.

Much love Jon. Glad that you're back in the office so that we can see what your day is like!
Thanks Yoru!!
I am glad you were able to go back to the office. Nothing beats having some human interaction with your coworkers, plus the place seems awesome. Thanks for the tour. I have to say that out of all the perks, what I liked the most was the number of places you can work from. Be your best, do your best, and don't forget to be happy. Have a good one my friend.
Thanks Alfredo! I agree with you đŻ, thanks for sharing your insights! Cheers đ
Love to see more Google office related and tech related videos đ. Good content
Thanks James! I appreciate it đ
Worked as a subcontractor for Google about a year ago and the free drinks and snacks was a favorite of mine, then when I found the free lunches AND VARIETY, I was in heaven haha. Appreciate you for making these videos.
It's such a great perk! I took it for granted and when we had to work from home, I realized just how good we had it haha
recent got my first job as a software developer and these videos motivates me so much!
That's awesome! Congrats on your first job
P! Please share how it is like
can you make a video on how you got into Google? Like the prep, the interview process, how many times you failed (if any) etc.
Yes, definitely. My next video will cover all of this, subscribe so you get notified when it goes live!
Just subscribed! Watched two of your videos and am already hooked.
Thanks Quintin! I appreciate it
Bruh only the thought of going back to the office 5 days a week scares the living shit out of me. I like my personal space, i like my personal freedom, why would i ever give that up again?
I think that's the million dollar question everyone is asking themselves right now. There's a lot of perks to working in an office (like this video), and working at home (like you mentioned). Personally, I don't see myself going back to the office 5 days a week - but I'm not sure if I'm 100% sold on being fully remote either.
@@yourfriendintech Great to know, going back to the office 5 days a week is just too much, even pre pandemic. Personally I'm pro hybrid but most importantly I want to have the freedom to choose between wfh or office.
Hi, loved the video. May I request you to make a video on what daily habits someone could adopt as a programmer/software developer to keep sharpening their programming skills.
Thank you! Yes, great suggestion đđ
Great video as usual Jon. One day I will make it to Google. The campus is so nice.
Thanks Mohamed! One day we'll be coworkers! đ
really enjoyed this! could you do a video explaining how you got the google job? also what did you study in uni (and which uni)? I'm planning on doing a Bachelor's in electrical and electronic engineering, do you think I could get a similar job at google with a bachelor's degree in EEE? Thank you!!
Thank you! I'm going to cover all of this in my next video đ. I did study in college, I went to a CSU (california state university) and majored in computer science.
There is actually no degree requirements to be a software engineer at Google. So yes, you can major in EEE and still get a job at Google. Does your EEE curriculum have a lot of programming classes?
Love you bro †for showing google office and I am excited for google job

Bro I just love being at home in my own space so I wouldnât be at the office at all. Maybe once a month idk.
Once a month! You might as well just be 100% remote

Hey Jon, really enjoyed your video. Love your background music selection at 4:22 and 6:55 in your edit. The campus is actually a lot larger than what I've shown! I'll share more parts in future videos đ
I like your videos. What would interest me the most is how you work with your pen on paper to organize your code work or what you do with it in your work flow.
Thanks Chris! I take a majority of my notes digitally, and I'll use pen and paper when drawing diagrams, UI elements, or when stepping through code. I can make a separate video on this to get into more details if you're interested!
@@yourfriendintech That would be great. I remember an article of a colleague from you (at least what the company concerns) on medium who said that before write any code you gotta clear your thoughts on paper, with diagrams uml pseudo code and so on. So it might be interesting how to do this in practice. What kind of diagram for while loops and so on.
I see you with the cuts t-shirt!
Good eye! Got a few of their T's!
Super nice video! I'm curious, can you use any OS you want for your laptop and phone as a Google employee?
Thanks! Yes, we can choose our OS and phone as long as its supported
Hey Jon, great video. I'm curious about a number of things regarding working for Google... How do you say "I'm done with work today"? You spent a lot of time during your day recording for this video and thus said you had to catch up on some things. What does this look like? Do you need to commit X features per week or day?
Hey Cody, great question! I do have autonomy over my schedule; so the super simple answer is I know I'm done for the day when I've hit 8 hours. There's a lot of planning and estimating to determine what I'm going to do each day, and it depends on a variety of things like priorities, deadlines, existing workload, etc. Hope that answers your question!
I'm from.out of town. Is this norm in america to wake up at 6 am for office jobs??

is Python still a loved language in google? I've currently learning it and will also add sql, django and front-end to my "stack". (not to apply to google, I was just curious)!
Hey! Yes, Python is still used at Google. Why don't you want to apply to Google?
Question, did you get an option on which laptop you got? or they automatically gave you the macbook pro??
I ask because at my job we got an option between a macbook or a windows based. HP.. Just curious.
Yup, I chose the macbook I'm using! đ
Facebook is very strict to their employees not to engage in YT. Cool thing, Google employees can have a their YT channel and by this video represents Google in general.

"espresso? Say less-o" đ€Łđ€Ł
LOL đ
I'm currently in college and am stuck in a crack between PM, UX design, and UX copywriting; I find them all interesting but don't know which suits my marketing major best đ
Thank you for posting. I saved it to my favorites because I have never seen the inside of Google's gym; the pandemic has made corporate gyms one of the criteria I have been considering for companies to apply to.
That's good that you have all of those interests - it at least gives you some direction on different careers to explore. Since you're still in college, I would recommend getting different internships or co-ops so you can experience the different roles.
The gym is a nice perk but I wouldn't rank it high on my list of criteria (and not every Google office has a gym!)
Thats how good company treat their employee, gave some nutrition their brain, let them get some relax, I was completely hate my current place, it gave me some huge stress everyday, and not even used my software engineering skill which I was good at it, and gave me bunch of useless data, that I dont even know what's value of it, I hope I get a better place somewhere like Google and Facebook where they really appreciate their software engineer, and sooner got investor for my start up, that made my own good environment for my employees
Sorry you went through all that, I hope you get the job you deserve!
Awesome video! Iâm starting as a software engineer at Google soon, so itâs a really great sneak peek for me :) Which part of the MTV campus was this filmed at?
Welcome to Google đ! I filmed at the Googleplex
@@yourfriendintech Thanks for the answer! One more question, do you think Google will push back its full reopening by a couple months like what other companies are currently doing? I know weâre set to go back in Sept, but given the news around the Delta variant, Iâm a little uncertain now. Regardless, Iâm super excited to see the campus when it eventually reopens.
@@chiewpiew Sorry I have no comment on this, but you can reach out to your recruiter or team!
Jon, I just graduated from a state university with a bachelors degree in CS, and I performed well getting Aâs in almost all class, especially the ones central to CS. I really want to get my first job at Google out of university. I have an internship at a huge company in my state under my belt and two moderately advanced software engineering projects done by me. Iâm feeling overwhelmed by the intensity of the coding interview questions although I enjoyed discrete math, logic, etc. I was wondering your 100% honest opinion about if you think itâs possible for me to get into Google and if you also felt overwhelmed with preparing for interview questions.
Congrats on graduating! You sound like you already have an impressive resume so great job on all you've accomplished. The interviews are hard, but not impossible - I 100% think you *can* get into Google. Apply and go through the interview process to see for yourself đ otherwise the answer will always be no
Absolutely. Straight A's+internship at a big company+good engineering projects+being good at discrete math? You're exactly the kind of people who should be applying at Google, coming from a former Google SWE now at Apple.
Espresso? Say less-o! đđ
Hahaha đ€Ł
it's funny that you were saying you've been hunching and the whole time I was thinking you have really good posture
I think it's because when the camera is on, I'm hyper aware of my body posture so I sit up straight -.but when I get in the flow of working, my posture gets pretty bad
Nice one. Could you please also make a video on your interview experiance with Google?
Thanks Raj! My next video will cover how I got a job at Google and I'll talk about my interview experience as well

Here is my question what does a software engineer at Google do ..I mean is there a point where you finish working on a feature for an app and chill or it's constantly working on a feature , push it , then continue working on the same thing over and over again .?
I work on Android, so we do have a point when we are done - for example, when we release a new version of Android - but there's always more work to do, such as working on the next version. I would say there's a good mix of working on new features and updating existing features

IF you lived in Oakland, were a TVC and had to chose btw SF and MTV office, which would you chose and why? Asking for a friend ;)
The offices are pretty comparable but Oakland to SF is an easier commute than Oakland to MTV for sure. I would choose based on team/lifestyle
HI I really liked your vid! I want to ask u some question,
I am Korean, 13years old and I am hoping to become a software engineer in silicon valley in the future.
Some people says that If u want to work on software based jobs, u should study or learn coding when u are young.
What do u think about this? Should I start studying coding?
And Do you see people who came from abroad, especially from Korea?
Thank you! I wish I can work on Google in the future!
Hi Ella! It's not a requirement that you start learning how to code at a young age; I didn't start learning until I was 18 and in college. I think if you are interested in becoming a software engineer, then it could be helpful to start learning how to code now so you can know whether or not it's something you're actually interested in doing as a career. You may not like it, or you may love it! But you won't know unless you try. And yes I do know people from Korea who work at Google đđ
...nice for you to do some quick massage and enjoy the relaxing ride home... do you commute everyday? such a relaxing way of going to work by riding, saves time, energy and gas (or are Google shuttle electric?)... thanks as always in sharing your day-in-a-life series ... #StaySafe
Hey Emil! I don't commute everyday, but when I do go into the office I ride the bus - I think they use gas - and it's super nice not having to worry about driving in traffic

First what are your thoughts on this new technology and second, are there any consideration from google in this area?
That's awesome! To be honest I'm not well versed on the technology, but I personally find it interesting, it's definitely a hot field right now. I'm not going to comment on Google's behalf, but you can view Google's current job listings regarding blockchain here: bit.ly/google-blockchain-jobs Hope that helps!
