Stueww Nadal had tactical problems in 2011 . His serve wasn’t good enough and got punished by Djokovic and his agression from the baseline wasn’t up to the task . Nadals backhand imo was lacking penetration consistently that year and his forehand up the line combined with his court position wasn’t threatening enough for Djokovic. All those things he adjusted in 12-13 and guess what he started to beat Djokovic 6 out of 7 matches .

Return short against Novak and you’re done and that’s what he fixed in 2012 and as you say, Nadal has started to dominate him again. I also think that his rivalry with Federer was so demanding, that mentally he was overwhelmed against Novak. Your analysis is always right, why don’t you come back to the Whatsapp group? @@ertugrulkorpinar51 we all know Djokovic's level had dipped marginally from 2012 till 2015 and Nadals had increased in 2013. Also those "adjustments" that Nadal made consisted mainly of him being able to step into the court and utilize his forehand with less effort than in 2011 due to Djokovic's reduced groundstroke depth. Don't tell me it's because Nadal stopped him from doing so because I've seen with my own eyes that the difference was infact Djokovic's inability to put pressure on Nadal with his groundstrokes off of the same patterns of play.

@Shawn As a Nadal fan, I would have to say Djokovic was just way better than him in 2011. There is no denying that, injuries or not. But this is why I became a fan of Nadal. He may lose but he works hard enough to improve his game. And he did so in upcoming 2-3 years and did that once again in recent years. This is just an example of how the big 3 have pushed each other hard enough that they have to improve even as they reach the end of their careers.
When prime Nadal vs peak Novak was going on in this decade, it didn't seem like either one will lose a point based on their defence and movement. That is just how high of a level these 2 were fighting at.

to say that djokovic dominated nadal in 2011 is an understatement. he absolutely demolished him. he beat him in 6 back to back finals, which included Wimbledon and the US open. the other 4 titles are major tournaments in the form of masters 1000s. even more insane, he was so fucking OP this season he beat the god of clay in back to back clay court masters 1000s titles in rome and Madrid which was the most insane thing ever and unheard of. its never happened for a reason before and again, because only 2011 djokovic reached a level capable of beating nadal in back to back clay court tournament finals. even tho 2015 djokovic statistically done better overall, I think there's a strong argument to say that 2011 djokovic was his peak considering his wins and his absolute dominance of nadal. I've always thought of 2011 as Djokovic's best season, not 2015. The reason why is that tennis goes beyond the numbers (in this case titles and wins). In 2015, he faced a fairly weak tour and almost completely dominated. In 2011 though, he could do this to a very strong Nadal on clay. To me that speaks volumes. Also, Federer played better tennis, in my opinion, and so provided more competition when they did face each other.

A curious thought about their head to head in 2011 is that in Indian Wells and Miami, both hard courts, Djokovic won by 2 sets to 1 and on clay, where Rafa was supposed to have more chances of winning, the Serb went 2 sets to against Nadal. That season broke Rafa's heart on the Grand Slams. That 2012 Australian Open loss must had been difficult for him to absorb, losing three GS finals in a row to the same opponent. Hats off to Djokovic!

@Shawn Nadal lost the final match to Djokovic in 4 Masters 1000, at Wimbledon and US Open. What kind of knee problem gives you no trouble beating players like Federer, Murray, Berdych, Tsonga (all inside the top 10 in that season) but makes it difficult against Djokovic?! This has nothing to do with injury. Rafa had to win from 5 to 6 matches in every one of those tournaments he fell in the final round to Djokovic. The Serb was simply too good for everyone in 2011. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Nadal fan, but blaming on an injury to justify being schooled by Novak when he was at a higher level, that's just lack of humbleness.

It's a pity he failed big time on RG semis because i think that was destined to be the most challenging final to Rafa (to be honest Federer had it's chances in that final and played probably his best on clay, but he missed too many opportunities)

The true golden year of tennis. The level of tennis these two produced in the multitude of finals they played is unreal. I don't see this overall level being matched by any other season in the future. You won't see an alcaraz, sinner, or rune match at this level of intensity take place every time they meet up for an entire season.

The year 2011of djokovic described Andre Agassi as " the season never seen before in tennis history." He was utterly right. Quality and level of both players was insane. Out of six final he beated 3 times king rafa on clay. That's not happening to see everytime. During 2011 to 2021(july) novak won 19 slams rafa won 9 fedrer won 5 slams. Fedrer should thank novak for protecting his 20gs record till year 2020. Else rafa would have 25 slams now.

Remember watching back in 2010-2011 when majority thought he would lose to Federer and Nadal in matchups and I'd go the other way. The way he dominates baselines rallies, defends and barely makes an unforced error made me think this guy is going to win a lot of titles and going through the years boy he did. 2011 was a season that made me realise Djokovic can be the best ever player despite being far behind in big titles. It was foreshadowing of what was to come. He's a machine and mentally unmatched.
