  • Soprano Elizabeth Connell sings Elektra's monologue "Orest" of the opera by Richard Strauss in a performance given on 15 March 2005 in Berlin at the Staatsoper, conducted by Michael Boder. Orest is sung by Hanno Müller-Brachmann.
Elizabeth Connell's Elektra may be the most youthful and lyrical sounding interpretation of this role I know of. Not to mention the biggest top c's!
Look out for two more excerpts from the same performance! (more)

Connell has a truly remarkable ability to communicate the vulnerability of Elektra. This is a brilliant interpretation and a stunning performance.

Elizabeth Connell can sing Elektra for me any day!! The voice sounds spectacular and technique fine. I suspect this is how she sustained a long career. Her score reading is very accurate and musicianship is superb!! This score is extremely difficult to conduct, play and to sing. It's one that most should never open due to the vocal demands. Bravo Elizabeth!!

I can't agree that she has the biggest top c's. Whoever said that never heard Nillson's huge voice soar out those top notes with perfect clarity and phrasing.

Brava - great singing from a great Wagner-Strauss soprano. I saw her Elektra in a concert performance with the Montreal Symphony conducted by Charles Dutoit several years ago. Her bright, youthful and beautiful tone never ceases to amaze me. Connell is far, far superior to the other Elektras in front of the public today, such as Gabrielle Schnaut and Deborah Polaski...

Some of the videos on CZcams, e.g. sung by Hildegard Behrens, come with en subtitles.

Liz looks terrifying wielding that axe. I feel for the young tenor having to sing alongside her while she has it. It would never be allowed under New Zealand regulations, when I saw this two years ago in Auckland, she was then armed with a water bottle.
