  • When Elizabeth "Liza" Connell received her devastating medical diagnosis in October 2011 she decided to give a very final recital, as a farewell to the public in Hastings on 27 November 2011. The audience consisted mostly of friends and family, and she entertained them not only with her singing, but also her famously gleeful, positive spirit, until the final, heartbreaking encore.
She passed away shortly after that recital, on 18 February 2012.
(Apologies for the less than perfect camera work. It was a difficult occasion to film....)

In 1977 at the age of 10 my school teacher gave me a recording of Norma introducing me to what is still to this day my favourite opera. I grew up in an adoptive family but was fortunate to meet my birth mother in 2004 and the first thing we did together was go to a performance of Norma in Melbourne with this wonderful artist. I will treasure this memory forever. ❤️

I was at her last performance at the ROH as Turandot. I went to here Irene Theorin who cancelled and the magnificent Connell sang. Age 65 and still one of the best I ever heard. Watching this was very emotional for me. Bless her memory. RIP.

Considering the heavy rep she sang during her career, her voice was flawless here! Compare her and Marton at their comparable ages and it's like night and day. I wish I had gotten to see her before she passed. She seemed like a warm, inviting, calm prescence, even while facing death in the face. Ultima Brava!

Thank you so much for posting this - I worked with Ms. Connell in the 90's in South Africa and the last role I saw her in was Die Mutter in Hänsel und Gretel at the ROH ❤

She was a great artist and her amazing voice will forever remain in the great history of the opera. She could sing a wide range of repertoire and always with a great taste. Thank you so much for posting this. Liza forever
