- ELIZABETH CONNELL who passed away on 18 February 2012 in her very last song: Ernest Charles's "When I have sung my songs to you, I'll sing no more", the encore of her final recital in Hastings, 27 November 2011.
Thank you Liza, for everything

This is the most heart-rending recording I have ever witnessed: the final aria of Ms. Connell's last concert, when she knew she was about to die of lung cancer (as she did 3 months later). She obviously chose this song for its lyrics which were close to her own plight. She choked up on the first phrase and had to begin again. Seeing a person sing of their impending death is difficult to watch. I admire her courage and so admire her voice--which here delivered a magnificent self-eulogy.
Marc Nicholson I have no words. I’m blessed because I can hear this masterpiece today, so far away. Thanks.
Incredible truly beautiful
Your words ought to appear at the end of any future published biography of Elizabeth Connell : An Envoi.
I am a priest who has asked for the words of this beautiful song to be printed in my funeral order of service. I met my wife when I sang in a summer season show ( before taking up Holy Orders) and she was in the front row stalls. This song sums everything up.
For almost a decade I return to this post, time and time again. I'm glad it's still here.
This is how I want to go out. Poised and still singing. What an inspiration.
9 years later and her legacy still lives on, her voice still moves me
Every tine I listen to this performance I am amazed--amazed that she died a short time after this recital. A testament to her integrity and training. A beautiful voice that left us far too soon and tragically underdocumented.
A wonderful singer who made me several cups of tea!!. Such a fabulous person who treated amateur and professional performances the same. I am so privaliged to have worked with her.
Phil Homes oh you really are a lucky guy.
Superb control of her voice which allows her to expresse the inexpressible. Truly inspirational and an artist who reaches right into your soul. Weeping as I watch and listen.
WOW Liza at her most inimitable....expressing the inexpressible......xxxx
Heart wrenching. My favorite rendition. No one sings it like she does. God Bless Her. She left us one of the best gifts in the world. Musical Truth.
This is one of the most beautiful things that I've ever heard.
***** Thank God there are still some sensitive young girls who know how to appreciate good music. Thank you :)
callastoujours Aw, thanks! :]
Florence Foster Jenkins movie brought me here. This songs captivated me as soon as I heard the intro. This is my soul as a music when I reminisce the good old times. so beautiful.
It was my favorite part in the movie, and it made me cry. Such a wonderful song, and wonderfully sung here as well ~
Me too!
Elizabeth Connell still held in such affection. She sang her songs with truthfulness till the last . Those of us that remain must remember her and follow her beautiful example.
I have never heard this song sung more beautifully ~ her Soul is shimmering with Light/Sound; what a model of artistry to aspire to.
I love the transparent quality of her voice - I wasn't familiar with her before. My loss.
Profoundly touching and what amazes me is that her voice is still so beautiful after singing highly dramatic roles such as Lady MacBeth, Abigail, Isolde, Turandot, Eboli, Elektra, Medea, Norma, Ortrud, Barak's wife, Brunnhilde, to name a few.
Every time I see this, I make it okay to the point where she stops and says "I love this songs." and then break down bawling my eyes out. That emotion in the end, on her face... just heartbreaking.
I like how she doesn't do so much vibrato making it easier to hear the notes. Best singer I've ever heard.
Watched this several times, it makes me cry every time. Liza was truly one of the greatest singers of the last 30 years or so. Will never ever forget her "Eboli" at the ENO back in the 1970s, this started my great love of opera.
That was so beautiful. I am in floods of tears. God bless Elizabeth.
The voice was still a thing to marvel over. But one can see and sense how ill she was. Wonderful, strong and funny, Liz was a glorious Abigaille, even a Norma, she sang all the heaviest parts with that silvery-safe voice of glory. Miss her.
What a sublime "souvenir" of her artistry and personality she gave us with this rendition. She looks and sounds utterly moved by the melody she's singing and is able to convey those emotions in the most seamless, beautiful singing. She had such a rare control over her voice even at the age of 64, but what amazes me the most is the way she could use that special voice of hers to turn the deep meaning of the words into music. Here she really exuded gentleness and spirituality. Rest in peace!
she even was 65 !
This pianist is a god, a saint, a true friend. God bless him/her. That said, Ms. Connell is a phenomenon. Such a beautiful artist, and beautiful voice. I know her voice only tonight because a colleague of hers who is a mentor to me told me of her death and made me know her artistry through this video and several others. I look forward to knowing this voice and this artist more...RIP.
I am far moved by Elizabeth's rendition of this song than any other's I have heard so far. She simply floats, and her glissandos are just right (to me). Others' constant scooping and/or overuse of glissando compromises the beauty and fluidity of the melody, just in my opinion, which Ms. Connell allows to soar smoothly and grandly.
One of our generations truly great artists, blessed (after an age of work, mind you) with a rare, captivating, beautiful and powerful vocal instrument - and a true passion / commitment for the delivery of text. I was fortunate enough to workshop with Ms Connell back in 2007, and I will never forget her true artistry, her commitment to every note, and her truly beautiful spirit. She was an inspiration. She will be missed.
So sad to learn of this wonderful singer's passing today. So, so beautiful. Rest in peace, dear lady.
Exquisite. Incredible singing. Bless her soul
what a great artist! such a deep soul! thank you, thank you, thank you...
Certainly the most affecting performance of this song I know. The phrasing is exactly right, especially the beautiful downward portamenti at ‘so fair, so true’. Truly beautiful.
Bravo What a great tribute to this song. To be sung by a person that was truly singing it for the last time, and understood exactly what it meant. Her singing of it was gorgeous. God Bless Elizabeth.
So many of us are deeply saddened to hear the news of Liza Connell's untimely passing. Thank you for this final and beautiful tribute to a wonderful human being and outstanding and inspiring artist. May she rest in peace.
A great artists of considerable vocal longevity and talent.
An exciting voice and a deep commitment to stage craft.
I saw her several times in opera and remember her coming to St Botolphs at Aldgate to sing in an AIDs fundraiser in the early days when the virus was much feared.
She was a splendid human being.
Most lovely and moving
What a surprisingly touching and breathtaking performance. I have goosebumps! Thank you, Elizabeth Connell. Rest in peace.
Indescribably beautiful
so inspiring. moving, heartfelt, gorgeous. a truly great woman and singer.
Did you know her or sing with her, by any chance? You're a wonderful singer yourself, and your homage is that much more meaningful.
Effortless Perfection! Best rendition of this song
What a powerful final gift, from a truly phenomenal musician. This is spellbinding, I'm in tears. Thank You, Liza. God rest you, dear.
Magnificent. Courageous. Stunning. Poignant. RIP lovely lady.
Went to her memorial concert in London tonight, quite superb. Some of her pupils and colleagues participated, and many great memories of Liza were recalled. Brilliantly hosted by Kathryn Harries. Still miss Liza like mad.
Elizabeth and myself were students at the London Opera Centre in 1970,she was a loverly lady ,quite and caring with a wonderful voice and as it was world class.
I never sang with her professionally only wish l had, very sad that she passed away having many more performances to give to the world of Opera. God bless RIP. John Tranter bass.
Brava!!!,angelical soul singing!!!
So poignant, knowing that this would be her last performance and what a truly wonderful way to say goodbye. Beautiful to the last. RIP.
I love the Lyrics:
When I have sung my songs to you, I'll
Sing no more. T'would be a sacrilege to
Sing at another door. We've worked so
Hard to hold our dreams, just you and I. I
Could not share them all again. I'd rather
Die with just the thought that I had loved
So well, so true! That I could never sing
Again. That I could never, never sing again
Except to you.
wooooooooooooow, amazing. and at this age, such voice...
Rest in the Light, you lovely lady - you will be so missed. And so gratefully remembered x
So sad, and I can understand how moving it is to interpret such a song, her very own farewell to the stage and to life, in a favorite of Rosa Ponselle. And ... I just can't believe Liz is now gone ... RIP
There are many clips with some famous singers offering their interpretation yet I always come back to this clip. Of course there is the emotional effect of knowing that she had only a short time left to live and she was aware of it. Miraculously the voice is steady with no indication that there was an illness. Whether it was memory loss or her own awareness of the future I don't know. It has happened to other singers--the only time I saw George London in recital he had momentary lapse and restarted the song again--but with Connell it difficult to separate the song from the singer. A life cut off too soon.
I have heard many, many prominent singers in recital who had to start over a song for various reasons. But I think this was genuine emotion she tried to explain as a memory lapse.
I agree. Simply the best.
I attended Elektra at Auckland Town Hall two years ago, my only experience of opera. Elizabeth Connell carried the show by herself. Also her rendition of Die Allmacht on Hyperion is much treasured. Saddened to hear of this loss for Ekehard Stier and the APO.
Such humanity and music touches our soul and takes us beyond the stars, thanks for posting Dr M
Wonderful! Thanks 👍
Such a beautiful tribute and impeccable rendition. Rest in peace Madam Connell.
Tt`s wonderful. I have not words
this is so bittersweet.
wow. beautiful
So heartfelt and gorgeously sung. TG for CZcams when it brings you this. (She physically reminds me a bit of Susan Boyle).
got teary eyed. so beautiful. god bless her soul
I love this song.
Bravo! What a brave recovery! Takes talent and strength to admit a "flub", and start over again. Bravo, Elizabeth Connell!!!
This is, and always be one of may favorites videos ever. Lovely, bittersweet, what else can you say? I can't help coming back from time to time.
A sad and deeply untimely passing of a great singer.
Beautiful. Elizabeth, thanks to the internet you are the gift that keeps on giving.
The most beautiful thing I've ever seen... To Olympus, together with Gods!
It’s a strangely brilliant song in that it should come off as maudlin, but when beautifully sung, as here, it is genuinely moving.
This makes me cry every time. Unbelievably beautiful
You are sorely missed Liza; beautiful singer, beautiful woman, no words . . . baruch dayan emet
I always loved her - remembering her specially in Frau ohne Schatten.. Thanks for this moving video !
Wow amazing
What a truly wonderful singer. She has brought such pleasure to so many for a long time and will be greatly missed. There aren't many singers of Wagner etc etc who can give a recital like this. The voice is lovely; you know in the first 5 seconds that you could listen to it for ages! Thank you, and RIP. Pete Herron, Padova
The Great Elisabeth Connell. I will never forget you nor the three times I saw you live in the opera house....... twice as Strauss's ARIADNE and as Verdi's Lady Macbeth. You were and are much loved for your unbelievable gift to us. R.I.P.+ Dearest Lady. She should have been far better known by all in OPERA as she sang in every genre of opera in sublime fashion. Much more attention was due this great woman. She deserved the glory she received in opera BUT much, much more GLORY should have been accorded her. I was devastated by her sudden passing in 2012. My Love, Miss Connell.
amazing
This is one of the most moving things on the I teensy. A great lady , a beautiful voice a radiant soul. Vale dear heart.
Gorgeous

Incredible singing. Thank you and God Bless her.
What a voice...
I am glad I stumbled on to this link as I was looking up Helen Watts. What a talent lost, I am spell bound by her beautiful voice and sad to hear no longer with us.
Wonderful.So very touching.A fantastic lady.
What an artist. Superb
Splendid. A voice clear as a bell.
So this really was Elizabeth Connell's last concert? And her final song?
Her last gift to us. Wonderful. R.I.P.
Speechless. Ms.Connell's passing a deafening loss.
Beautifully sung with such heart felt emotion, ive heard many versions but this is truly my favourite
May her soul rest in serenity and peace .... She has sung well ..... very well .....
Extraordinary. Why have I never heard this incredible voice before. I once read a review about the late Soprano, Chloe Owen and the critic related something about feeling held I just experienced that she meant every word that she sang. I will be looking for more recordings of her. Thank you so much for posting this gem.
Knowing she died just a few months later, makes this all the more poignant. I sit here, crying. What a beautiful human being.
Lovely....a life of song that was shared....
"The eternal task of song can never be finished in a singled lifetime. That is the beauty and fascination of the Art."
-- Dame Nellie Melba
Just lovely...
One of the greatest singers of all time,
There is none other - absolute beauty!
Muy God! What a beautiful voice! Bellísima!
RIP a wonderful artists and person
What a gift she was. Thank you for posting this. It brings me to tears!
Wow.....one thing to say....she moved untill the end...and with the beautiful quality we knew her from.
Perfection!
Judging by her voice I would think she was 30 here. Amazing!
So moving, so beautiful! (I can't hope but thinking who are the idiots that dislike this video... a woman singing this song and knowing she is about to die...it is scary to witness the lack of empathy in some human beings)
Heartrending ...
Beautiful
the best i ever heard!!! wow:')
Brava e simpaticissima, condoglianze alla famiglia.
Riposi in pace.
wow
