CAT C15 Injector Wiring Harness, Turns Out It's a BIG Job!

  • Hello guys! So I'm still trying to track down some shakes that I've been getting with the truck. I know there are multiple problem areas that need to be addressed, but today we're concentrating on the "idle shake" or little "miss" I get at certain RPM's.
The internal wiring harness, or injector wiring harness, is prone to damage over the years, as it lives in hot oil, and eventually the oil will make it's way into the wire and wick itself up and out to the connector on the outside of the engine. If left unchecked it can even wick it's way into the ECM! But this harness can be the cause of a bunch of little shakes or rough idle symptoms and really the only way I've found to deal with it is to fire the parts cannon and hope a new harness helps! Hahaha.

Until you try it on an OHC engine... After doing my first timing belt job on a Toyota 4A-FE, I decided to test-fire the engine before putting everything else back together. I figured it would be OK with no valve cover, like the OHV engines I'd messed with, but no. It sprayed oil EVERYWEHRE before I got it shut off...😫 Now I set the valve cover on the head with a heavy weight on it, when I do a test-fire before putting the rest of it back together.

I miss the old trucks. But trying to keep an old one on the road just got tiring to me. Every trip out was something new to fix. With the newer truck I can go a couple months sometimes with just tightening up a bolt here and there. However being down a week due to an emission sensor really sucks.

The oil can walk through the wire due to capillar effect. In bad case it can walk till the EPU. In germany you can order plugs between the connector and the sensor. It stops the oil from coming into the wires. Sry for my bad english.

You did a great job bro. I deleted a previous post thinking you were still a accert motor..my bad the single turbo in my face….my bad. But this is another theory. Its a long shot but the Iva’s are disabled from your tune..There clearaces from the intake rocker are 20 thousand give or take.We know they are disabled…They are hydraulic acctuated pistons like the jakes. They have springs on the actuator pistons to make them retract once the ecm commands. Its a far fetch but maybe one of those dead iva pistons is bumping a intake rocker arm giving you fits

    • @callthemall
      @callthemall  Před 2 lety +1

Yeah it is technically still an acert engine, and I had that EXACT shake when my engine was first tuned. The IVA’s weren’t backed off internally, so on a good pull up a hill, the oil pressure would build up enough on its own to actually actuate the intake valves and it gave me a shake. Not gonna lie it felt like that shake came back but the Iva’s are triple checked to be backed off so it’s not that ☹️

I don't mean to be critical, but I was so afraid of you hitting one of your bolt/nut holders and knocking them off and nuts and bolts going everywhere. You might put them on the table to be safe when you aren't putting them on or taking them off. Also, please put a cover over the air intake for the turbo. Imagine this; Oh darn, I'm missing a nut, where the heck is it? Can't find it anywhere. Get another one and move on. Start truck and hear rattling in turbo. Uh oh!! I learned these over the years the hard way, hopefully you don't. Nice job, your patience is great, maybe you threw wrenches off camera? :-) My jobs aren't usually complete without racy language and wrench throwing. LOL!! I have an 06 acert and had the cold start issue and it was the coolant diverter valve.. either the harness or needs rebuilt/replaced....
Also the jumping I had was my throttle sensor under my peddle but yes could be rear-end.
Also replace all fuel lines. Be sure your not getting air in fuel system, ive seen them get fuel from the hand pu.p primer on the secondary fuel filter housing.
Hard start can also be your check valve on the secondary fuel filter housing... its just screwed on in sode... its what keeps fuel in ur filters to start. Last would be your cam and crank sensors... they dont alwyas throw codes when they are bad and cause that bucking.
And update on the situation would be appreciated, good luck

Good job , When your engine is cold what you're talking about , All of them are gonna do it , Just let it warm up on its own , That's a cold start poppin missing everything you're talking about, in your kind of weather pull up a cold START page for truck diesel engines And then you will understand what I'm talking about , The shaking you're talking about , you're correct one of the injectors , But whatever you do just do not replace ONE, replace all 6 if you do not a month later another one's gonna go , you're just gonna keep getting into the engine until you replace all of them , To get the oil and fingerprints off your engine Go buy yourself a couple cans of oven cleaner , Spray all over your engine spray it on everything let it set for about 30 minutes and take a water hose to it Works pretty good ,
    She sounds pretty good MATT

Thanks bud, yeah I just started getting this smoking and sputtering when I get on the power a couple months ago, so it’s a new issue where something has changed and is not quite working properly. Could be a sensor issue but everything is reading right on the computer, could be head gasket starting to go even. I sent it to the shop a month or so ago and they found 4 injector cups leaking so changed those and put in 6 new injectors, and I’m still having the same issues…

Those will break down overtime, zip ties, get brittle or break apart and you will have pieces in your engine

Willing to bet that the vibration issue is a bad harmonic balancer

Hey buddy did you find your miss??? I got vital info cat has a factory defect in these heads its the injector seats you can remachine them on the truck..the tool# C153055 or C15-3055 it's a two piece set after you do this unless seats are beyond repair...you won't have that miss..try to look up cat 3406e/c15 injector seat repair to learn more...the miss is a common issue stop wasting money I've done all this once seats re.achined injectors seal in seat on head the bottom o ring sits even now.cat will not tell you this or admit it of course they want us buy parts. When injector dosnt seat we get air in fuel...wish I was back in Ontario I could fix that for ya
No more combustion( air in fuel) ill check back on ya
