I ended up interning with a UX Design team by pure happenstance (this was through a program that teaches people on IT and initially I was interning in the company’s data centers)
I ended up really loving it and stayed on for four months when initially I was only meant to shadow with them for two weeks. I was working on getting my UX certification through Coursera and didn’t really enjoy it because there is no dedicated mentor to go to for projects. However it is great for the fundamentals.
After my internship was up, I was pretty much applying everyday for an entry level UX job (very hard to find) and still trying to keep up with UX studies. I was starting to feel a little pessimistic about my prospects of getting a job because I was only working with four months of experience but one day I got an email back from one of the places I applied to. Set up an interview, that I felt I completely bombed and waited for the inevitable rejection.
But instead they saw something in me enough to give me a chance and I’ll be starting full time this month! :)
Sorry for the long post just thought I’d share my experience as well with you all. Love your videos! I find them super helpful and informative💕

I transitioned from a career in textile design for apparel to UX design last year and there is so much imposter syndrome but it’s mainly around my age! I felt the same way with my most recent career change. I had worked in food service while in college the first time and then in sales and management after I left college. Then I worked in warehouses when I returned to college so I was super nervous going to my environmental chemistry job interviews in my mid 30s. I found a job at the first place I interviewed even though I continued interviewing at several other places before I finished the hiring process.
The key was that I was capable of weaving a story with my previous jobs so that it made logical sense and I was able to show what I learned in each roll and how this would make me a better candidate for the available position.
I am now changing careers again and once again feel nervous but I am using my past experiences as well as successful experiences of others to fuel my courage and confidence.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience! :)

My goal is to have a new career as a UX/UI designer by the beginning of next year, if I'm lucky by the end of this one! I'm still working at my current job, and will be while doing the bootcamp, but I'm ready to devote all of my time for a year if it means a career I'll enjoy more, and be more financially free to explore in later years if I chose I want something different. I'm so excited I start fundamentals next month(I'm actually using the same bootcamp, UX design labs)

Because I’m coming from a different career, the fear of inadequacy definitely hits home for me. I’ve already invested so much of my time in education that starting something new is scary and not know if the skills I currently have will really translate over to a UX/UI design career. I also understand that there will be hundreds and thousands of people who will be better than me at this. I won’t be the best and I have to be okay with that. I need to figure out what I can offer and what my strengths are. Thanks for sharing this video Mimi 💕

I just quit my job to become an UX Designer. I know it's very risky but I want to choose something which I won't regret for once in my life. My finance job pays well (where I live) and for my age but I feel like it doesn't suit me. I know UX Designer isn't perfect either but at least I can enjoy it. My fear is still there of failure but I'm gonna try (visiting a university which offers a degree in UX Design).
If I fail then so be it, but I will keep trying to find my own path which I can enjoy for the rest of life.

Love that you said it hadn't crossed your mind that you may be "bad" at UX design. If after research you knew the skill set lined up with your skill set and passions, then you were smart to take the jump into this new field. Even the best designers can learn something new and critiques can be uncomfortable but also super motivating.

Hi Mimi! Really appreciate your honest videos! I’ve been looking at starting the Designlab bootcamp for quite some time, and yes, definitely been questioning about the financial part. I may need to move back home for a bit if I start the bootcamp to save on fixed expenses, but my home is in Asia. Would doing the bootcamp in a foreign country affect the quality of learning? I think in terms of course work it shouldn’t affect too much, but meetings or 1-1 with mentors, I’m wondering if those schedules can be flexible for ppl outside of the US! Thank you for your contents!
