I resonate so much with being the only solo designer. I've been working as the solo UI/UX Designer in a mid-sized startup for almost a year now and it's a very isolating and depressing experience, especially in a low UX maturity company. I did not have anyone to bounce ideas off of which gives you a limited perspective. Most of the time, I was a bottleneck for everyone before they can do their work so I had to get designs done left and right so I'm not a blocker which led to poor work-life balance so I am constantly burnt out. While I have designed and launched a few of our products, I think it's been really setting me back in my career. If you're just coming out of bootcamp, I definitely don't recommend going this route.

3:00 yeah my first contract role was with a design team, but every contract after has been where I was the only designer. Even in UX mature companies every corner of the company isn’t gonna have a UX team. I worked for Fidelity Investments and I was the sole designer more often than not. BUT, the plus side of being in a big company where there are teams, is you can network and attend group critiques. But these companies don’t hire as easily for junior roles. That’s the problem. A lot of mature IX companies are not hiring juniors, unless it’s an apprenticeship or internship
Hi Mimi, been watching all of your videos and that inspired me to start my UX journey. I’m currently in Designlab Phase 1. I realized that I don’t like the research part of UX :( . I know a good UX is based on a thorough research though. Btw I wonder how much UX design actually conduct research or how is it in your job?
Hi! So happy you started your UX journey. I will say a good amount of my projects involve ux research since I love to hear from customers on their experience. There are a couple projects that had less interview-style research and more unmoderated testing that was done without being "face to face" with users. Hope that helps!

I agree I’m getting into UX. It as the only marketing manager are just in my marketing career I realize being the only marketing person they hire they like you to know every single aspect of marketing and not realizing that if we have a team, we can all bounce like this on each other by being a freelance and helping small brand, I understand, but when it comes to big companydefinitely should have someone you can collaborate with
