FF7 Rebirth world 1:1 Scale!? Here's how that could look!

  • Damnit. I said "circumference" a bunch .... sorry. Diameter is the distance across the entire circle. Circumference is the length of the perimeter of the circle.
    The diameter of Midgar is 5000m
    The circumference of Midgar would be 15707m
    (2·π·2500≈15707.96327)
    Even though the director, Naoki Hamaguchi, said it - I still don't believe it. No way, Rebirth's world map is 1:1 scale with all cities built in one seamless map

    I really hope they somehow are able to fit in the 5km wide Midgar on the map and just surprise everyone with the map size. I don't need it or its region to be explorable at all, but having it there on scale in the map will really help with portraying the majesty of Midgar.

      My argument against the highwind is the incentive. There is a fast travel system in place with the Chocobo Busstops. The Highwind was the fast travel system of the OG. They have to "destroy" the busstops story wise then somehow.@@ClassyCrustatio

    I have a feeling that midgard will be portrayed in a similar way to Insomnia in FFXV. You could see it in the distance and see that is a very big city, but couldnt get near to it

    Im peetty sure 1-1 means to scale in relation to Cloud. Meaning no giant cloud running across the world and instead towns are scales properly to Cloud making it aeamless to travel. In OG cloud on thevworld map was taller than most towns until yo ran into them, causing a black screen, then the town was scaled properly.
    I think there was either a mistranslation or just the devs not explaining things well.

      you guys just don’t seem to understand how much bigger games can be on a PS5. It’s a seamless open world. The devs have SAID IT. No loadings The PS5 can load 2GB of data in milliseconds. This is not what you think you know about games. I’m telling you guys, it’s so much bigger than you can imagine. Every major open world game we have seen on the PS5 have all been cross gen. This is gonna be HUGE guys.

      Dude that’s not fort condor. We have confirmation it’s on a distant island no longer reachable (They say it when they come out of the mines). Thats the lighthouse we have been seeing. Condor is gonna be its own place on its own island now.

      @@SnowCoveredKK I completely agree, I think the map of the first (eastern) continent that we saw in the gameplay footage has been specifically made for that showcase. Made to throw us off scent and make us think the world is a lot smaller than it actually is.

    1:1 often means the difference of size between character models and the environment. 1:1 means that it aims to gives realistic proportions. Example: Cloud beside a Chocobo Post Sign, will be the same proportion as an average human being in real life beside a Stop Sign. It is not about distance. Nomura explained this concept back during interviews for Versus XIII years ago.

I think when he also combines that with saying "every dungeon, every city all in one seamless world map" it's implying that Midgar will be intergrated in the world at 1:1 scale.     Don't think Midgar's in-game distances in Remake or "lore scale" in Ultimania are an accurate baseline for discerning the size of Rebirth's map. Remake's Midgar was, in practice, the entire world map for that game so I don't see those measurements being 1:1 with Rebirth. Either way, I think Hamaguchi was referring to realistically proportioned characters in relation to the world, instead of a giant chibi cloud stomping around a miniature map when he said 1:1. I'm guessing Midgar will only be viewable on the map and they'll have adjusted its scale to be more realistically sized in relation to everything else (so it's not the size of a continent lol) and we'll only be able to see it in the distance but unable to get close to it.

    I actually agree with you. I think the 1:1 scale doesn't refer to the size is square kilometers but rather including all of the elements of the game in relative position.
    The elements besides relative position also include the sequence of the locations.
    However, the kilometers from the Remake won't be in relation to Rebirth as they are not in harmony with one another. However, 1:1 kilometers might actually be relative to the FF VII eastern continent on the original map, and thus not in relation to Remake + Rebirth. As you have noticed in this video, this makes Midgar almost 2.5 times the size of the eastern continent. However, if you were to resize the Midgar map by 75% of your total estimation, then it may be placed relatively on the map of Rebirth's eastern continent.

    Compared to the OG world map, the Rebirth world map's cities are made bigger, but the land mass is made smaller. Many of open areas from the OG ff7's world map are gone.

    I personally think this particular open world map might support my idea that the whole Gaia will be sliced into multi region open worlds, possibly 3-4 parts, to help condensed everything & making sense the whole thing on technical POVs. I mean Witcher 3 kinda did it with 5 regions of open world maps across "only" less than half portions of the Witcher world "continent." It also make sense for the next part of the trilogy with some regions to be closed off (not being work on yet).

      @@crozraven they've said in interviews that we'll be able to traverse between continents, likely once we get the Tiny Bronco. Haven't actually seen it yet though. Might be saving that for the next trailer but I think I might skip on future marketing material as I don't want to spoil too much

    15:07 They also showed that you get to breed chocobos with different colors that have different abilities like in the old ff7. One that can fly, go up mountains, run over shallow water, etc... im sure they are adding all that.

    as always, perfect video, it will be really hard to wait any longer, regarding the map, perhaps we are seeing it in a different slant, the final version will necessarily have to contain a vast deserted area with midgar in the middle, or... that map is not the real one

    I think it’s clear that Rebirth’s map still functions as an abstraction. It feels bigger, but scale and distance still don’t make sense on a logical level. I believe this was the hardest problem to solve and to be honest I think it was the smartest way to approach it:
    1) the world doesn’t feel empty;
    2) it doen’t take ages to get from point A to point B;
    3) it still feels somewhat close to the OG map;
    4) it will solve all future problems related to scale and distance;
    5) it looks FUN!
    I’m just curious to see how they’ll fit Sister Ray from Junon to Midgar 😂

      All of that is COPE, there is no better solution to world scale than world maps....
      it solves the "taking to long to get anywhere" issue, as well as scale, as well as sparks the imagination instead of trying to trick low attention span players into thinking what they see is real.
      This new map is worse than ever in terms of immersion, everything is too close, waaaaaay too close, we are talking 20 minute irl walk to cross a whole continent? wtf
      Everyone makes all the cope takes they want but this is the first time we had an example of an old overwrold map was done in "muh AAA standard" open world and its such a glaring loss of scale its hilarious. NinoKuni 2 did this so much better, but when you say that the retards will say "but the chibis" as if the ionly way to do world maps is with giant chibi kaiju walking the land... unimaginative idiots.

    1:1 scale map would be too crazy if it was true, because it would have to be the size of a whole planet with 3 continents. Even just 1 continent would be too big.

    There seems to be an assumption even among FF developers (Yoshida) that if they want to create an FF style world in 1:1 scale, it has to be on a real planet scale similar to Star Citizen. In my opinion, starting with scale is the wrong way to approach building an FF world.

      It's been a long journey to get here. I always want to be transparent and honest with how I feel so that moments like this can happen. I was very upset with how they handled Remake's story and I think I always will be disappointed that I will never get the faithful Remake I wanted. But I've surpassed the stage of acceptance and happy to be super hyped for Rebirth! I understand what this story is now and I'm excited to see how it all goes

    Starting to think the scale of Midgar on the Rebirth map might actually end up being closer to it's lore scale in the og game. It's inner radius, from Shinra Tower to the reactors, should be about the length of the Junon canon

      No lol, you saw it in this video how ridiculous that would look. It would take up 1/3 of the world map. map has been scaled down by various degrees. But if Midgar was scaled down by 90% it would be 500x500m ish on map, which seems more realistic, that's half the distance to chocobo ransch. But that makes Junon 2x bigger than Midgar, don't know about lore scales, but i'm guessing Midgar will be about 1km wide on map, too. Dungeons and inside cities might end up being scaled bigger. I'm guessing 1km will be standard size/distance between various locations.

    Good work! Midgar won't be explorable in this game, and I think you will have to enter Midgar and there will be some sort of loading in the third game, even when accessed from the sky. They could something to mask the loading to make it seem seamless, but it will be a different map. It isn't in this, so doesn't contradict their seamless claim.

    Yeah, it's def not one to one. Otherwise that would be a tiny continent. This world map we're getting in Rebirth is just like you say, similar to the OG. Best to imagine it as an enhanced version of condensed map where Cloud was running around in the OG. Otherwise, if we go by the first game, Midgar would be almost as big as the whole continent. lmao

    But yeah I agree. Also about the MGS comparison, I believe the MGS map is like a province of a country in Africa (if I'm not mistaken) so they did downscale the map or change it so we only see a very small portion of the eastern continent. Even so the game still looks freaking awesome!

    Great video. However, I want to point out that we don’t know the full size of the continent or the world at large. Presumably Costa Del Sol is across the ocean along with Gold Saucer and several other locations. We could be seeing half of the Eastern Continent.
    At the end of the day, a lot of the distances come down to video game concerns. How much data can they get on the disc and how much players will enjoy the experience are factors to consider. Based on things the party said, Kalm should be a good 10-20 miles from Midgar. In the real world, the Chocobo Farm (which itself would be several acres in size) would be a similar distance from Kalm. However, asking the player to trek 10 miles with nothing to do would not be much fun. The OG could handwave that as part of the game mechanics. However, with the developers statements, they can’t just expect the player to be okay running 10 miles.
    Even that 10 kilometer distance we saw in trailers is probably the end goal with several things happening and side quests along the way. Alternatively, the player fast traveled away from the next objective to do a side quest (we do see other markers on the map that were closer).
    As others have said, most likely we can stand outside of Midgar at a distance and observe, but not much else. We’re unlikely to go back until Part 3 and the mission to stop the Sister Ray.

    I don't think he meant game design is 1:1 of the lore size. He likely meant objects are 1:1 in relation to each other(no Tardis effect).

      Yeah, I explained that later on in the vid. I put Midgar according to size in-game from Remake compared to in-game continent from Rebirth. Lore size would be massive, talking miles and miles big. Hopefully, it makes sense. If not, I'll try and explain a bit better.

    As you can see in the map, we'll be able to walk to the north of Kalm, that will be Midgar area right? So maybe it's just a "dessert" area with a closer look to Midgar. I don't think we'll be able to enter Midgar or get near to it, but that Midgar area it's in the map with a Chadley's tower on it. Great job.

    The first continent is possibly largely more bigger on the top. In the shinra propaganda scene Midgar seems to be more on the Middle of the continent than in the OG. Kalm maybe just moved more closer to Junon, and this part of the continent was compacted for gameplay reasons, but the continent is possibly 3x bigger (midgar desert inclued) The map have clearly a different form. So create the illusion of a 1.1 is not impossible with the highwind in part 3, although midgar will surely be reduced in any case and we won't be to land everywhere.

    If you look at Junon, it's pretty big in comparison to the world map, that's what they meant.
    As you pointed out, it would be annoying if everything was scaled to real size, and it took a day to go to calm, but judging by how it looks in game, they could have made it a bit bigger, but making it 2x bigger, would have taken 2x longer or more, to build the world map, never mind making it actual size.
    They have edited the map a bit, but things align quite well if you twist the map here and there, but original map is too basic, so it makes sense to upgrade it a bit and make it a bit more interesting.
    And they also said you'll open up more locations as you progress story, and you come back to Midgar later on again if I recall correctly. When you get highwind later, you can probably fly there, but not enter, until that part of story.

    The thing about the map is interesting, considering we don't go to Wutai in Rebirth. Unless they were lying about that. Like not sure how it's 1 seemless open map/world, if we're not able to go to Wutai in Rebirth. All the contradictions gets a lil annoying. Though, I get it from a marketing stand point. A secret Dungeon by the exit of the Mythril Mines, would be cool, & it does look like a cave exit or entrance. Yeah, when I hear 1:1, I think life size. Would be interesting to travel through the desert, then the grasslands before getting to Kalm though. That's a crazy size for a portion of the world map. Prob 70+Sq km. But, that's not even including Underwater, or caves/dungeons. So prob around 90-100+Sq Km for the entire world map. Not including Remakes maps, or 3rd parts map. Holy crap, that's wild that Midgard is so big. Yeah, I don't see the 1:1 happening either. They prob reduced it to be 1:1 to Midgard in Remake. Good video.

    You're forgetting the fact that during the Summer Game Fest 2023, the Rebirth trailer showed an area on the map where the party is fighting, and the quest location on top of the screen is showing 11016-11017 metres. that's 11 kilometres from where the party is at a point in the map, to their destination.
    That 11km straight line will need to fit within the eastern continent between two destinations (kalm to chocobo ranch, ranch to mines, mines to junon, etc).
    This means that it's feasible that a 5km Midgar fits in the northwest part of the continent, to scale.

      I do mention the 11,000m objective in this video but I think it could mean that the party was on the Western continent and the objective was on the Eastern continent which means the world is at the very least 11,000m wide. I made a separate video showing how even with just that information we can determine the size of the map is bigger than FFXV. Pretty awesome stuff! Thanks for your comment!

    Considering in the trailer the clip of them going to the gold saucer in pre-rendered CG it stands to reason that it also could possibly not be 1 to 1.

    I personally think Midgar needs to be to scale, but it's just that the top part of the continent is just as large as the part we've seen and Midgar is just taking that whole thing to itself. That would just make Midgar THAT much more of an imposing presence on the world. Plus, there needs to be space for the weapons to take some time to reach Midgar by land for part 3.

    Its as you say I don't think Midgar will be accessable in this game, including the surrounding landscape.
    They have said there will be an episode with Zack. In the trailer Zack was seen in sector 6 with Kyrie. So I am assuming that the episode with Zack will take place in sector 6. That way they will reuse the assets from the first game.
    Its a very clever way of doing things. They can do a Zack episode in Midgar eaisly because they have the assets from the first game.
    We have spent a whole game in Midgar so I'm glad that we won't see Midgar again until the last game, however it will be nice to revisit Midgar for Zack's section of the game.

    You have to keep in mind that the in-game Rebirth map appears to be built around a sphere,. Even the exact same shapes would appear crammed.

    Nobody does a map video quite like you haha. While I think CC Observatory's -- well, observation ;) -- about the compass was interesting, that's probably just the artists making an asset and not thinking too hard about the game/world logic because it really doesn't make sense for Junon to be pointing South haha. Fun to see the continent all messed up though. I certainly think the world is going to be a BIT smaller in practicality than I imagined when first seeing the trailer, but that's fine as long as their are plenty of points of interests and optional things to discover.

      Good point about the compass. I honestly think the map is oriented correctly in-game but CCO made a very convincing point to why it could be tilted. That's what excites me the most about the world exploration - so many points of interest and things to do! The mini-games, character specific sidequests, cool landmarks, etc!     Physically speaking, if it's a 1:1 scale, it might seem to be huge at first thought, but I would imagine areas aren't THAT huge. Imagine Forbidden Horizon zones for each area probably. Eventually, we'll explore the whole globe obviously. However, if you actually compare that to a real life planet (like Earth), then the FFVII planet is like the size of maybe a United States county (not country -- COUNTY).

    Ok...has anyone pointed out that circumference is the distance around a circle and not across it? That would be the diameter. I am just guessing here but I think the second size/version of Midgar you showed is closer to having a circumference of 5000m.

    If Midgar's circumference is 5,000 meters, then the diameter from side to side is 1,591 meters, and the distance from the central pillar to the edge Is 795 meters.

    at 20:00 u are tilting the entire map, instead of "adapt" it to curvature of the celestial body wich should resemble a sphere. That's why you get Junon pointing south, when instead is pointing west. the original map was a sphere made flat on a plane and was totaly unrealistic, more like a stylized map like medieval maps, i dont think the map we are looking at is the same, it looks more is following the sphere.
    In geography, this is a very well know issue, wich makes impossible to represent properly a sphere proportion 1:1 on a plane, unless you fake and roll the ball to make it flat. The result is usually that the representation appears to have more truthful dimensions at the equator, but distorted the closer one gets to the poles. Also the orientation of continents and landmass not close to the equator will result distorted. Doesnt matter where, but to represent a sphere on a plane you have to make distortions of dimensions.
    The chocobo farm is tilting North west if compared to Junon original map, because the celestial body Gaia is relatively very small compared to our Earth, so much that at the same time of the day Junon and Chocobo farm would not face the same celestial sky: you have already rotated on the sphere. We know this from the original game map, Gaia is very small compared to Earth, smaller than our moon, in fact i feel like it is more comparable to an asteroid than to a moon.
    I wonder, to have same gravity as our Earth, Gaia would have to be so much dense that people would not have such a good climate on the surface 😚

    The actual map is bigger than that. That's not the full game map. Remember they showed that you go to the gold saucer in the trailer.... the gold saucer is on the other continent where the desert is to the west of junon.

    If it truly is a seamless map we have to really applaud the entire team because, as far as I'm aware, that has never been done. I mean, of course we could do that with the 2D maps and 3D, with the last one bieng FF9. But we never had an entire map that you could seamlessly travel point from point and everything is on scale.
    I have 0 clue how they could do that but it's very clear that this is a technological marvel and I hope that more games attempt to do something similar!

    Tge more i think about it... the less i think the scene we saw with the dr is midell. Yes it looks like it buy that could easily be in Kalm or Junon.
    Mideel is way way way south, tge opposite direction or the northern crater where all the Cloaked guys are headed. And they confirmed we are following the cloaked guys which are again heading towards junon which is the opposite direction of Mideel.
    We could still go there but I don't think that scene we saw in the trailer is Mideel.

    I think it's seamless. The FF16 dev team was clear theirs was not interconnected, so it would be weird that this team hasn't corrected anyone if it actually is not seamless.

      This video is more to showcase the size of midgar if it was integrated seamlessly into the world map at scale according to how it was depicted in remake. The size of Midgar being the size of the entire continent that we've seen so far. It's disproportionate. I have no doubt the world will be massive as we have already seen an objective marker of 11,000m in the SGF trailer

      Because it's FF7 and most people didn't think that Rebirth was actually going to go the single seamless world map route complete with fully playable Tiny Bronco etc, most people thought they were only going to be able to do segmented zones like FF 16.

      A lot of us were expecting segmented zones with loading screens in between. Square Enix have never attempted this level of open world exploration with one of their own internal studios, unless you count XV which had a big map but with very little to do and only the most basic traversal mechanics. So I think people are quite surprised by what they are seeing. It's certainly far exceeding my expectations :) Agree though, so far I haven't seen anything that's completely revolutionary in terms of how the open world functions

      In the gameplay demonstration that content creators played, Red XIII mentions that Fort Condor is an island with currently no way of crossing the bridge to get there. It is visible in the background though. So yeah, I'd expect more changes to the world map and locations as we learn more

    Go watch videos of Star Citizen Lorville. People have no idea what modern consoles are capable of because we've been living in cross gen world for too long.
    They have the full Midgar modeled. And you're going to fly over it in the airship. They have full persistence. No reason to do 1 full map unless you want players to use it.

    I have been thinking about this nonstop since the TGS footage and the junon gameplay footage released. I think Hamaguchi is correct however i think they gave us a bogus map, made specifically to downplay how big the continent is, just to throw us through a loop. Specifically made for TGS and promos.
