  • To determine if you need to narrow the shoulder breadth of a sewing pattern, follow these steps:
    Take Accurate Measurements-
Measure your shoulder width accurately. This can be done by measuring the distance between the prominent points on your shoulders, typically where the shoulder seams would sit.
    Compare Measurements-
Compare your shoulder width measurement with the shoulder width measurement of the pattern. The pattern's measurement can usually be found on the pattern pieces or in the pattern instructions. If the pattern is for a garment that is meant to be worn with ease (like a loose-fitting top or jacket), consider the ease allowance when comparing measurements.
Fit a Muslin - Sew a test garment (muslin) using the pattern:
This will help you see how the pattern fits your shoulders without making permanent changes to your fabric. Wear the muslin and check the fit around the shoulders. Look for signs that the shoulders are too broad, such as excess fabric bunching at the shoulder seams, the shoulder seams falling off your shoulders, or the garment sliding down your arms.
    Visual Indicators-
    Excess Fabric:
If there is excess fabric at the top of the shoulder or near the neckline, it could indicate that the shoulder width is too broad.
Seam Placement: The shoulder seams should sit at the edge of your shoulder. If they extend beyond your shoulder, the pattern is too broad.
Adjust the Pattern: By watching the following video....
