Stroll is the first F1 driver who didn't want to become one. He's fulfilling his father's dream. Doesn't matter if you force your child to race a car, play the piano, or learn mathematics. If the kid doesn't like it, it will never be good at it.
I do believe this was his dream and in my opinion he was decent at it for a short while, around the time he got pole at Turkey. At least he maximized the talent he had. I think his breaking point has been getting Alonso into the team. He now has to come to terms with the fact that he pales in comparison to an actually competent driver.

Not really, every car-driver have their "natural spot" on the grid based on their performance, towards which they gravitate to over a long race. Front runners starting in midfield or back won't be bothered much and will be let to overtake easily because others have reasonable goals and won't waste time, effort, fuel, etc fighting the rocket ships in what they understand as a losing battle. They didn't "fight" through the grid, other let them get ahead while focusing on their own fights.
