Alonso comes from a humble family. When he was little their parents couldn't afford an F1 subscrption to see the races on the TV. So little Fernando had no choice other than become an F1 driver so he could get the possibility to watch the races on the big screens at the track.

It's mainly because Alonso has stuck with racing. Other greats settled down with family and family takes up a HUGE amount of your time. Racing, like anything, is a use it or lose it skill. You want to remain competitive, then you must race. Always. Having a family takes away from that.
