đOne of the most meaningful hit songs, and it's just turned 50 years old! In 1973, we lived in the biggest house and garden I've known - shame it wasn't ours! - and this song takes me back to walking through the paddock and relating to the lyrics as much as I could at the age of 11. Great reaction to such a heartfelt song.đ
Roberta was a goddess whose voice made us all vulnerable and gave us the permission to feel on a deeper level.
The writer of this song wrote it about brilliant singer songwriter Don McLean( American Pie , Vincent and so much more) after she saw Don in concert. Roberta Flack recorded it and had a #1 song with it. â„ïžđŒđ¶đ”đšđŠđšđŠ
Lori Lieberman, a young singer songwriter under contract to Capitol Records. She read some poetic notes she had made when watching Don McLean perform to two song writers who were assigned to write songs for her. She actually first recorded, it but Roberta Flack had a hit with it a year later. I remember the description of her involvement with bringing the concept of the song and some of her feelings as expressed in her notes, in media articles at the time. Years later the songwriters said that she had no involvement in writing it, so she brought it to court, and when their research dug up old the old magazine article from around 1973 in which one of the songwriters describes her involvement in sharing her feelings and ideas about her experience watching McLean with them, she won the case.
I'm pretty sure this song is about Stevie Wonder. Remember she mentioned a young boy. Don Mc Lean wasn't a young boy at that time, Stevie Wonder was
@@tomwagner4406 not about Stevie Wonder-that much I know.
@@tomwagner4406 Also, Lorie Lieberman wrote this song, so it was she who would have been talking about some concert she attended-not Flack.
This song won Record of the Year on The Grammy Awards
Roberta Flack, age 84, is the real deal. Per her Wiki, she resides in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
1973: Grammy Award. The First Time I Saw Your Face. Record of the year.
1974: Grammy Award. Killing me Softly. Album of the year.
2020: Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
1974: American Music Awards. Killing me Softly. Favorite Female Artist (soul/R&B).
Many other nominations and awards.
That warm feeling you experienced is shared by many people spanning almost half a century.
I grew up on this song and love it.
Me too!!!!
Great choice Dani, a true pop classic which illustrates the power of a good lyric in the hands of a great singer. Despite her church/gospel background, Roberta never fell into that trap of 'louder is more righteous', using sweetness and light to bring it on home. You said we can interpret the song in many ways, but can we? The message seems unequivocal to me,
Lyrics are thought to be about the emotion of attending a Don McLean concert.
from google
"Killing Me Softly with His Song" is a song composed by Charles Fox with lyrics by Norman Gimbel. The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman after she was inspired by a Don McLean performance in late 1971.
@@hongfang2508 Lori Lieberman sued the writers and only won her case recently. She said she wrote virtually the whole song and and Fox and Gimbel had little input.
Thanks for supporting such a wonderful cause. Sorry to hear about your grandma.
I lost my mother to Alzheimer's 3 years ago. It took her so quickly too and it was so devastating to watch. It's a harrowing disease and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
Most of us have had the experience of watching an artist perform and having the feeling they were singing sn emotional song that you can totally relate to just to you. Then you realize that they are completely entranced in the song themselves and even when they look up they are still focused inward.
Sending love from San Diego.
I could see you covering this song, you have the voice for it. Give it a try, then let us see what you did. Exciting!
Thanks Dani for reacts to Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack. Its was so amazing like its was, when I was heard its as a young man. I am doing good, and Saturday was 70's birthday.
Dani Congratulations on being able to perform the National Anthem. Dani I love this song.
Iâm 61 yrs old and I feel like Iâve found a new daughter with your intro. So sweet and inspiring and your voice is incrediblly sweet to my ears. God Bless!
Aw that is so sweet!!! So happy you found my channel!
Dani, Elvis with the Voice sang .this song on September 1974!
This song was inspired by Don McLean. Great back storyâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
Sing it very well
My mother is now in a nursing home with Alzheimer's. My brother and I tried to care for her as long as we could but it comes to a point where 24/7 care is needed and we both have to work. Thank you for your participation and help in getting awareness for fighting this disease. You have a great heart and you always have a great analysis of the songs. Keep up with the work, always a joy.
Except during Covid last year, I sing to senior homes, nursing homes [get paid for it but if I could afford to I'd do it for free] which obviously includes Alzheimer's patients. It is such a joy to see these folks faces light up and toes tapping, remembering word to old songs they know and many they don't. That Is the power of Music. I encourage Dani to do those gigs, learn the old songs they know. Learn a few silly jokes, stories about what funny thing happened to you....you will come home feeling like a king with a million dollars. They do more for you than you could ever do for them. they are sneaky that way!
Example for a bad joke I tell them, true story: I went to optometrist [true] and the doctor told me I had beginnings of a cataract in my right right eye. I asked her what do I have in my left eye...a Lincoln?...she looked at me funny, then I said I'm gong to need a double garage and a new pair of glasses if this keeps up. She still didn't laugh...I added this to the true story: the doctor cracked a small smile and said "Of all the optometrists offices in all the towns in all the world, you walk into mine..." well she DID give me that kind of look lol. When I tell this some laugh and at least the caregiver staff gets a lauh to lighten their load, IF they know the quote from the Casablanca movie.
Wonderful song from the earlier 1970ers. I like it verv much, đŒđčđ
On your own watch a live performance of her singing this song. It's even more touching...
Gotta do a Don McLean song after this. He is the man whom the song is written for!
BTW- this song was written about someoneâs first time seeing Don McClean live..
You need to put yourself first Dani. Your peace of mind and health are needed to be able to grace us with your marvelous reactions. May you be blessed with an abundance of health and peace. Thank you for keeping on.
If you like Roberta Flack you'll like her renditionof "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Very moving.
life does that so you take care of you 1st. sweet sound! Thanks!
Just a beautiful song Roberta Flack was an amazing singer this song was originally recorded by Laurie Lieberman and yes the inspiration behind it was a concert that she actually went to and took some notes down on a napkin and brought it back to a couple of song writers that she worked with It was at a don McLean concert the writer of Vincent and American pie it turned out to be a real messy situation over the years she basically got screwed over and never received anything for this song She and her writing team split up mclean became involved as I said very messy great reaction by the way Roberta heard this song playing while she was on an airplane and made some changes to it and the rest is history great reaction God-bless.
Nice reaction to a lovely song, Dani. Regarding dementia, a good song for anyone connected with someone with that condition is Iâm Not Gonna Miss You by Glen Campbell. He sang it while going through Alzheimerâs. It depends how you interpret it, of course, but the lyrics of it can provide comfort to those around the patient.
Yes hello it's me again hey there yeah I'm just looking at my phone here and I recall seeing her before and I didn't know who she was but now I think I told you yeah and I was she was she was the baby that passed away on August 16th Elvis Presley day that's too bad I feel for her and the world but on the bright side it's nice to see you're still doing what you're doing God bless you and your family we'll see what happens on January 8th Elvis Presley's birthday haha Carl
congratulations Mrs. Atkinson
Keep your strength and keep up with your good work
This was one of my all-time favorite songs growing up. I think I was in the eighth grade in 1973 and the first time I heard it on the radio I had to go buy the 45. The song is so beautiful and full of emotion like you say. Beautiful take Dani! Suggestion⊠Take a look at the top 100 songs of 1973. Itâs mind blowing. Itâs also the year of Elvis; Aloha from Hawaii concert đ”
I think I have a song you might love - but I am also concerned it will make you cry. I am a guy and I get misty-eyed because my Dad went downhill fast with dementia, passing away 10 days before Christmas in 2017. The song is Wide Land by The Mona Lisa Twins. They wrote it about their grandmother shortly before she died from Alzheimer's. These are just s few of the lyrics: Sheâs losing all her memories
Of faces that she used to know so well
But still remembers all the melodies
Of good old songs
Whose names she cannot tell
Imagine what it was like listening to this song for the first time while going through puberty, while having a crush on all the girls in your class
Hi Daniel thanks for supporting a great cause. My mum died of dementia & I can still seeing her smile to the end,
I love that song.
Oh! What music, fantastic voice...Softly...
Roberta Flack such a lovely đ voice
Someday I wish a upon a star
Roberta has such a beautiful voice.
Al Stewart Year of the Cat. Doesn't get much smoother than this.
God bless â€âïžâ€
I like this original version.
This is a cover.
Keep up the good work
Great reaction Dani! I've always loved the music of Roberta Flack. There's another song by her called The First Time I Saw Your Face that has a special meaning for me. It came out the year before I married my college sweetheart in 1970. It is a song that reminds me of her everytime I hear it. If you haven't already, I'd love to see you react to it. And congratulations on singing the National Anthem. My mom also passed from complications of alzheimers. It is a devastating disease. And don't stress yourself. You must take care of yourself. Again, thanks for reacting to the beautiful voice of Roberta Flack.â€
Great song reaction, this song give lot of fun when teenager and enjoy with the girl of my dreams in a slow dance in just 6 square feet dark spot. I love the better and better audio technique details you go through in each son, congrats
I â€ïž this song!!!!
Listen to "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".
Try the FUGEES version !!!!!
đđđ
please react to The combined songs "Load out and STAY " by Jackson Browne , Thanks
Killing me softly with her song more like it Roberta Flack is great singer great song
Don't feel guilty Dani, your life has to go on, you probably won't be doing this 20 years from now. But I hope will be singing. you could do a lot of these songs and keep this music alive. you gotta sing from the heart and not from the technique. technique is merely the tool box to get to that point of singing from the heart. Remember that.

As an adult listen to Time by Pink Floyd
You look beautiful and sexy and youâre incredibly intelligent--donât feel anything but proud of yourself
Great song, great artist!
The explanation of the origin: czcams.com/video/nIM9nvwOj64/video.html
Killing me softly is a great song. Roberta Flack's cover is okay but the original by Lori Lieberman is excellent.
Yeah, explaining any other interpretations probably wouldn't be optimal...on CZcams.
Very good record but I prefer the John Holt cover.
Sorry Dani not daniel
He is telling her off get rid of the guy
Blocked over singing video communism socialism not good where's freedom is f speech and the Constitution of the United States
I always thought this was a Fugee's song. They do a great version however true to this original. Learned something today, ty.
Isn't that awesome? Thank you for being here!
This is not the original either. Lori Lieberman sang the original one year before Roberta.
