Social media can be good if one uses it like a tool.
Social media is not good if one uses it _like a tool._
Good one!
Anxiety and panic attacks are two different things. Panic attacks come out of nowhere and wreak pure havoc. Anxiety does not.
CBT is one of the best therapies out there. My oldest son had terrible social anxiety when he was a teenager and benefited so much from CBT
Exactly. Think of the good things about anxiety like it helps keep you safe and it's uncomfortable and not dangerous. :)
The elevator guy was awesome. He understood even though he might not understand - if that makes sense.
Absolutely and yes. ❤
Dan Harris is a great dude. Enjoy seeing him pop up from time to time.
Trump is causing the anxiety. When he boarded Air Force One for the last time, with Melania in 2021, I sighed a sigh of relief. I want my sigh back. It was stolen. Vote blue! 💙
"Trump is causing the anxiety". Grow up.........not every problem people face is about politics. Believe it or not the majority of people don't place politics at the center of their identity.
Sounds like Trump is just a symptom of more deep seeded problems in you.
@kstrazz3552 They call those people "Trump voters". Unintelligent and uninformed.
Also, GUNS. we are all now FULLY aware that maniacs with high-powered war weapons, are all around us, everyday. To me, there is no such thing as 'Legal Gun Owner' anymore. Anyone is possession of these things is a DANGEROUS CRIMINAL.
@@kstrazz3552 What is it about weak-minded people's attraction to sociopaths? It seems a symbiosis. (Trump) You give me your money & your loyalty & I will feed you something more to abhor every day. The constant diet of abhorrence is the addiction & belonging to a larger whole of like weak-minded is the hook.
I'm really glad I caught this interview.
He's a white snowflake. He wouldn't last 5 seconds being black in America.
Without depression and anxiety the alcohol business would lose a lot of customers.
It's not a lack of exposure to other people, we don't need other people honestly and infact would have less anxiety if other people didn't exist... it's the stoic refusal to HEAR other people which creates very static mindsets. Static mindsets create friction.
im an introvert so social situations cause me anxiety,,, I,m happy with my solitude, do what works for you
I can relate. I'm an introvert and a happy loner.
Indeed. Despite society elevating extroversion, introverts still make up a significant percentage of the population. Harris is good about acknowledging there's no single, correct way to make oneself happy.
I enjoy social time with small groups of good friends, then I wanna go home and have down time. Do whatever works.
What is causing anxiety? For me it is the fact that neither side is trying to help anyone that needs help. Nobody can afford the rent and people are working and staying with multiple people in order to keep a roof over their heads. In Las Vegas where i live rents went from 900-1k to 2000+ and regular people cant afford anything. Others are worried about climate change, LGBT issues, insulin costs, etc .. yet not one person on either side is taking the fact that we can't afford to live anywhere seriously. Nothing above is more serious than that.
I see it all the time. Intolerance for discomfort is expanding.
I do like however I do appreciate the fact that it’s helpful to train yourself to desensitize and try to work and improve yourself in anyway you can to improve your emotional state depression and anxiety sucks and having a supportive network it can make a big difference
First. Its mainly the political culture, division, and general apathy of Americans towards their fellow countrymen and women!
It’s the acceptance of anti-evidentiary “reality” as driven by Murdoch-type media and religious nationalism.
First.
Black Americans have had that going on generally speaking for eons.
Nothing new at all.
not a very united states is it?
10% Happier is a Great Book - reccomended
Social Media
Social media isn't the disease, it's a symptom.
Social media causes normal human emotions? Who cares?
Joe Biden's incompetency.
Can you name me an era in which younger people didn't feel anxious?
Great interview. Been listening to Dan for a long time and didn’t know about his claustrophobia. I suffer from panic attacks, a series of which were triggered last summer by heat and bicycling. There were some heat-related deaths in the news that may or may not have been contributing to my anxiety. I was really suffering until I got on prozac for a few weeks. It had some unfortunate side effects, but I was able to get off it and be mostly back to normal.
Thank you for sharing this important information. 💯
This was very relatable and helpful. Sometimes the tools we need to pick up to get through public and society don't feel comfortable
Someone needs to explain the difference between "anxiety" and anxiety disorders. There's a big distinction between the two and this is confusing people about psychiatric disorders and their treatment.
A lot of terms from clinical psychology and psychiatry have gone mainstream. Idiot, retarded, trauma, narcissist, gaslighting to name just a few examples.
Too many self diagnosis
@@kptlt.phillipthomsen5973 Too much false medical information online.
Among children and teens specifically? Overly anxious helicopter parents. My Mom almost had a heart attack the night my brother went to prom alone. I was terrified for her life.
My anxiety is caused from my brother and sister who rarely visit my mom in the nursing home she has advanced dementia no longer safe for her to be home. I see her almost every lunch and supper and I have to make up excuses when she asks about my brother or sister why don't they come visit her we're all retired. I tell her they're busy
That's generally what happens though. You can't let yourself get anxious. They have their reasons and you should just be happy that you are there for her. My ex husbands mom was unable to get around for a few years before she passed and out of 14 of her children only 2 were there all the time with her. Those 2 ended up with severe health issues, one had a stroke, the other got cancer. Let your siblings live their lives.
Thanks so much David! In training 😅
Green tea is great for relieving anxiety. Coffee creates anxiety. Black tea is ok, has mild relaxing properties. Yerba Mate is pretty good as well.
Ideally just avoid coffee and alcohol if you have anxiety or depression.
I have severe anxiety and it sucks! Most days are a struggle... :(
Try CBT for anxiety. :)
I get depression and anxiety, but the underlying cause is childhood PTSD. I've found that anxiety is a habit as much as anything else.
This! The parents raised by TV are failing their kids.
I don't have childhood PTSD, I have adulthood PTSD. Anxiety isn't a habit.
@@renatajd7758what? That's not causing anxiety. I think both sides being so crazy is damaging children.
Anxiety is a normal feeling it's not a habit.
@@FleurPillager anxiety is normal however panic attacks are not.
Its boundaries. People have lost their sense of individuality and thus their ability to individuate from external stimuli.
No if anything, nowadays it's TOO MUCH individuality
.
👍 DAN HARRIS 👍
So life leads to change and change leads to anxiety and depression so get use to it that’s how I’m interpreting it and I’m noticing there not really addressing the anxiety of the expectations from society that I been dealing with for years and the depression and anxiety my ex put me through
That sounds like a lot of unresolved issues. That's a root cause of anxiety I think.
@@Lisa-pl6gv I was only saying my interpretation of the video and my personal experience
Social media Ugh. I can’t make myself go to a knit night because I don’t know anyone. I moved to Chicago 3 yrs ago and still know. No one. I pay for classes and don’t go. I am paralyzed. I don’t think I have ever had a friend in my life my doc keeps suggesting therapy. Ha. I couldn’t even begin to love the Parkman show
I moved out of my province in 1998 and it took me 4 years to get to have friends. I returned in 2003, lost a few of those I had here but kept the real good one who has been with me in my endless trials and tribulations since 1972.
Very interesting. Anxiety not created leads to more stress...
i see all the blame placed on social media which of course plays a major role but never see mentioned that our cities that are nearly 100% dependent on private vehicle usage. Gone are the chance encounters of walking by an acquiantance and catching up. Gone are the kids running around the streets playing and socializing. If the streets aren't safe or comfortable to walk, bike, play, then where are people meeting? Only at work, or in bars?
Social media is a distraction everywhere but to physically meet people in real life we need places to physically meet people that aren't just work or bars. We need third places like all human societies have had up until the last century when car dependent infrastructure changed the ways we live and communicate with one another.
I love those small interactions with the mailman, grocery store checkers etc.
Needed in these times of chg. Criteria
Critical thinking skills.
Fear is a tool
Dave, i need a recommended book list. So far im 7 books into a 20 books per year goal, as per your suggestion a few months ago. My two faves so far Brandon Sandersons - Rithmatist, and Billy Brysons - The Body. Is this guys book in your top 10?
Thanks mate 👊😎
Small elevators give me the willies......especially when crowded.
One of the best interviews I’ve seen you do
I can really appreciate an interviewer allowing the interviewee to talk freely without interrupting. Pakman is very talented.
I think people would have more empathy if it were considered more acceptable. Then homelessness would not be a problem.
For me personally there are other things than culture, like becoming a senior and health stuff. I mention this because I suspect is most folks primary anxiety is not in the in the social and political you are exploring here. I have that as well, quite Trump driven. But part of my Trump anxiety is the realization that about 1/3 of my fellow Americans are delusional, miserable, mean, and not too bright. This has implications of failure in our political and social system so many are like this. It's not going to change overnight and it's disturbing and ultimately a bit depressing.
I ma literally leaving in a month for a few yrs. Travel south, I deserve a better quality of life.
What about facetime being the source of anxiety? due to others often being fraught with anxiety and behavioral problems? Maybe pets instead?
No stability and no safety net...
wow I had a panic attack after my second child was born. I didnt understand where it came from. this is so interesting.
I had one after my 7th child was born and I know exactly where it came from. I had placed him for adoption and had a panic attack at the hospital when I went down to have a smoke.
Phones and overconnectedness in non meaningful ways?
Anxiety is normal and doesn't require any treatment or Buddhist mindfulness practices.
"Everyone is out to get you, man. Being Paraniod is just good thinking." Fever.
Johnny Fever! 😁
Mostly everyone's inability to listen to those they have "othered" and the act of othering in and of itself. Its much easier to be lost when you're a loose piece of the jigsaw puzzle then when all the pieces are joined together as a collective, and this climate has almost everyone who isn't a 1%er feeling like a loose jigsaw piece.
I hot an anxiety attack when they called name to revive my award at teachers meeting.
I have panic attacks in bed,in the dark 2:30 am

I believe the reference was making friends or Quality relationships. Folks that you can relate to. If you keep finding people that increase your stress, try finding a new environment
@@unknownone5314 I generally avoid people, but try to be inconspicuous doing so.
If you don't have anxiety then you haven't been around long
Trump and his evilness has been majorly triggering my anxiety lately but it’s really hard for me not to watch reports about his assholeness bc it validates how I feel about him. I started having panic attacks today and know I need to back off on hearing about him.
This video came at a good time for me. It was a quantum entanglement moment!
Social media..
Politics.. (Trump and cronies)
The political culture, division and unwillingness to accept reality
Me:🤔
They look related in some way.
Where does this guy get his evidence to back up what he’s saying?
If you don't have a little anxiety watching the world as it has become it could be that you are not paying attention or are not really being honest. Sure anxiety comes in multiple forms, but as someone with anxiety, I would rather have my moments than be apathetic and go along to get along. This is the dog in the burning house meme. Anxiety, as much as it sucks, is a useful defense mechanism. A lot of people aren't in tune with their feelings and hide who they truly are so they can save face and avoid criticism. I don't like group gatherings of 10 people I don't know, and I don't know many people who actually do. You would have to be an annoying narcissist to like that. I like being around my friends, family members, and people I know more than people I don't. Nothing against those people in particular. I would rather meet a stranger one on one than 10 at a party. I would rather be self aware, genuine and honest than be unaware, disingenuous, and dishonest. We all have an asshole, but not all of us are assholes. Those that tend to be are lacking in compassion towards others, and have an inflated ego, and think that they can live life without paying attention to the world around them.
How does not wanting to be around 10 people make you a narcissist? 😆😅🤣 So, I guess you avoid weddings, reunions, zoos, company picnics, festivals, sporting events, concerts, beaches.😆😅🤣😂 Sounds more like anti- social or an introvert!😆😅🤣😂
We live in the safest, most predictable and prosperous time in human history. It only seems worse because you have access to every terrible thing in the world, in the palm of your hand, at all times.
I dislike monthly potluck lunches at work. That's my time, not theirs.
We're the state and we can do whatever the fuck we want! That's what's causing all the anxiety today. Now, go back to your regular paid programming.
I just saw the video where Obama had to give Biden a gentle tug on his arm to get him to walk off the stage.
As a Democrat and a solid Biden supporter I have to say this caused me anxiety.
I wish someone would do that to Trump after he’s been speaking for 5 minutes.
In a nutshell .. piss poor leadership for years.
Trump has made my anxiety skyrocket. It was good to see Dan Harris.
Anxiety? Noooo! Who me?? Why would I be worried if the right wing extreme wins in Nov, and the possibility of me getting social security and medicare and insurance for people with pre existing conditions like myself cut or eliminated under their plan to reduce the deficit. So I become homeless no biggie! Make America great again!🤦♂️😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
People who do NOT see that as a potential outcome to Orangeman's re-election do not have common sense like you. Better keep socials nets than not.
Information overload. And it's mostly bad.
Most of my anxiety is caused by stress and being around idiot non-academics.
Lmao, it's everyone else's fault you're crazy. How left of you.
