I am from Turkey
Raised with Mediterranean diet and raised my son the same way
We moved to US when he was 3,5 years old and kept cooking at home never introduced processed food or sodas to him as long as I could
He is 21 years old now and makes his own shopping
He never even think about buying sodas or bacon or anything processed
This is the best thing I have ever made for my son 😊
I saw in US parents and grandparents giving their 2-3 year old children coke by adding water in it so they can drink it. I was shocked. How you give these to a child that you love and poison them
You lost me at "bacon".
Way too many Americans are so DUMB when it comes to healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.I have no recollection of soda in my house growing up. I'm a second generation American.
I think it's rare for people to give their children caffeine in the US.
If nothing else, people don't want their child hyper.
Americans are Addicted to the Worst food, as babies! Sugar, carbs, fried foods and salt... I was! Some of our everyday packaged food is Banned for consumption in other countries. 😮 The kids in my life, whose parents forbade sugar or excessive salt early on-- aren't craving them now, as adults-- and cooking is easier to them, than finding Healthy food here. Great Brains on all of them, too!
I grew up in Greece in the 70’s and here’s what we ate (the whole country)
- light breakfast, slice of bread with butter and jam or honey. Big lunch - main meal of the day - after 2pm (natural intermittent fasting), light supper snack no later than 8pm. Dinner was NEVER a sit down meal more of a snack - fruits veggies nuts, possibly some dairy or yogurt.
1. Red meat once per week, primarily lamb or pork - not beef. Chicken as a substitute for red meat often.
2. Fish once or twice per week, small fish, sardines, minnows, calamari, octopus, mullets, sea bass or branzino
3. Salad with every lunch. There was no lunch without a Greek salad - greens in the winter - tomatoes cucumbers feta onion in the summer (seasonal salads). Salad dressing was strictly Olive oil with red wine vinegar and sea salt plus oregano.
4. Legumes, beans, lentils and fresh organic veggies every day. Soups like bean soup lentil soup chickpea soup, etc.
Fried foods like French fries were introduced in the 80’s. Fried was only fried fish like cod, calamari or minnows. Cereal for breakfast was introduced in the 80’s no good.
But American capitalists invented the quick employee lunch, so now dinner is our biggest meal.

Nope. Many animals will eat unhealthy diets if given access to items scarce in their natural environment but essential in small amounts, probably because those with a genetically coded love of the taste would do the work to search the items out. Rats are very, very like us in the love of junkfood, for example.
A story from zoology: researchers regularly use a spread of local foods to find out what a little-studied animal eats in nature, and use the cardboard box the food was carried in as a control. Quokkas on an island where the growth was high water content preferred the cardboard, though the plants had vital nutrients.

Stop eating processed food...simple.
The problem isn't processed food, it's the ultra-processed foods that are increasingly commonplace in people's diets. Processing food by chopping, blending, or cooking can be very beneficial and aid nutritional uptake, but overprocessing it by extracting ingredients from food, modifying them, then putting them back into food, is what puts stress on the body. Basically, if there is a food you would be unable to make yourself at home with regular ingredients, it's been processed too much.
The term "processed foods" is a very broad category, which ranges from hot dogs to olive oil. Not all processed foods are equal. In fact, not all ultra processed foods are equal. Studies about ultra processed foods are skewed by things like lunch meats, cheese wiz, cookies, crackers, etc. That doesn't necessarily mean things like pea protein and miso are going to kill you.
That's step one.
And animals
Processed foods are overhyped as a boogeyman from the naturally organically natural mafia.

My Dad used to say that the healthiest diet was to walk away from the table. Everything in moderation.
Your father sounds very sensible & disciplined. Bravo.
With all due respect to your Dad he has that saying incorrect. The saying is “All GOOD things in moderation”. So if meat (including seafood), dairy, eggs and all oils are bad for you then you should have none of them not a moderate amount. For example, how much cyanide should you have, none right? Carrots are good for you so the saying is trying to keep you from eating too many carrots or eating only carrots.

Diet is one thing, but genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors also contribute to one's health. That's why it's so difficult to tease out the "perfect" diet.
True. One must pay attention to how their body reacts to the food it is fed. Far too often people eat only for the taste and not for the effects.
One of the biggest factors in longevity is Social life. Having a healthy social life is right up there with diet and exercise. Also your general outlook on life. Is it positive or are you always negative. People who are always negative tend to skip little things that add to their health. I seen a study done. Where the negative people tend to skip things like brushing and flossing their teeth regularly!

What is a nutritarian diet?
@@jvallas A nutritarian diet style can be vegan or non-vegan. This eating style focuses on the nutrient-rich foods that unleash the body’s tremendous ability to heal, achieve optimal weight, and slow the aging process. Eat mostly plants means only eat animal products in small amounts, if any, such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. Whole food describes natural foods that are not heavily processed. Basically, the majority of our diet is made up of fresh and clean produce rather than food that comes out of a package. No S.O.S. (avoid added salt, oil, sugar). When we eat the whole nut over just the processed oil, we are eating the fiber and protective nutrients too!
G-BOMBS is an acronym for Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries and Seeds. These are the most health-promoting, anti-cancer superfoods on the planet. Make sure that you include some or all of them in your diet every day.
> Greens: Greater consumption of these vegetables is linked to reduced risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, and a longer life.
> Beans: Beans and legumes are rich in fiber and resistant starch, which help keep blood glucose, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol down, and nourish the microbiome.
> Onions: Onions and garlic are linked to a reduction in the risk of several cancers, and their distinctive sulfur-containing phytochemicals have a number of actions that benefit the cardiovascular system.
> Mushrooms: Mushroom phytochemicals are unique in their promotion of immune system function with powerful anti-cancer benefits.
> Berries: Berry phytochemicals have anti-cancer and blood pressure-lowering effects, and are linked to a reduced risk of heart attack.
> Seeds: Eating raw seeds and nuts regularly is associated with longevity, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, common cancers, and a healthy body weight.
To reverse aging, one has to do what Matt Damon did to survive in the movie "The Martian" when he said "I am going to have to science the sh*t out of this." Check out the channel Conquer Aging or Die Trying to see a researcher who is trying out different interventions on himself and tracking his biomarkers over many years using statistical analysis of his bloodwork and diet.
The term nutritarian was introduced in the excellent books of Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Cheers!
The reason whole-fat foods are generally healthier than low-fat or no-fat foods, is the lack of added sugar. Food usually tastes terrible when the fat is removed, so to compensate for that, sugar is typically added. If you eat something with no fat and no sugar, it probably has no flavor. When it comes to fat or sugar, fat is absolutely the lesser evil, so go for full-fat yogurt, instead of the non-fat yogurt that has a teaspoons of sugar added
Or just eat mangoes, papaya and bananas. There's no evil macros. Avoid processed foods(with fat removed). Avoid a lot of meat, nuts, and dairy. And eat the fruit we primates were meant for. I eat potatoes and don't need to add anything. That's because my taste buds have gotten so clean and more sensitive after quitting salt, sugar and spices.

I've never found any way of eating that satisfies me. Raised on a meat and potatoes type diet only made me refuse to eat meat and I always struggled with being overweight. A vegetarian diet makes me hungry, but I prefer it. I don't eat foreign foods because the smell of their spices offend my sinuses. My body tells me what I can't eat by how it reacts to foods. Maybe just eating what you like in reasonable portions and getting moderate exercise is enough. Somedays that actually satisfies my needs. I don't want to live to be a hundred year old statistic. I just want to feel good. Our bodies didn't come with a manual, so we continue to try to figure out what works for us. I imagine most people struggle with this their whole lives.

Very much appreciated discussion; thank you for doing this!
Basically your body every day is begging you to STOP EATING SO DAMN MUCH. PERIOD.
Your body asks you to feed it daily. Starving your body damaged your metabolism.
I eat constantly to maintain my weight since eating healthy. No processed foods, lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, grains, chicken and fish.
It’s what you eat that makes the difference.
Doesn't that kinda depend on how much you eat? I think we can all agree that overeating is a common problem in the US, but that doesn't mean everyone overeats.
Not sure why my comment isn’t showing- What you eat is important!
I eat healthy and constantly!
Also depends on the food you eat. If you eat very palatable highly processed food like potato chips. You tend to eat more. Plus these foods are calorie dense which means you get such a small portion to keep calories in check. Also salty processed goods tend to make you crave more sodas if you're the type to crave that but trying to quit.
GREAT show even for someone like me who is very informed so i won't have a heart attack like all my relatives!

The study on rats says it all they feed them normally they would eat a bit then stop then they switched them to an "American" diet they couldn't stop eating they would literally eat until they popped they then put them back on normal food and they refused to eat until they were starving to death 😟
I like these type of interviews
Excellent interview. I like the focus on substitution. Particularly given that most just eat for immediate satisfaction. I haven't eaten red meat or pork in about 25 years. It's so easy to remove from a diet. Probably had two or three sodas over that time too. Again, super easy to eliminate. I wish more saw food for what it is. Fuel. And when you see it that way you also tend to use that fuel for exercise. I'm not a kid and my body doesn't look like most men my age. Not saying that out of arrogance. Just saying it's a very simple change in perspective about what food and exercise is. We're animals. Feed the animal what it needs to perform.
And also, fat is fuel/energy that you didn't need when you consumed the food in the first place. It's an energy store.
@@Jungla694 Yep. But the trick is balancing caloric intake and using the stored fat as necessary energy. If energy output isn't on the table...
I'm 75 and have been a vegetarian since the age of 18. It forced me to take an interest in nutrition but, as we know, nutritional research changes the results over time. The other factors to take into account are our changing dietary needs at different life stages and activity levels. Beyond that, we have different genetic profiles and what suits one may not suit another. A general rule though is avoid highly processed foods and additives and reduce salt and sugar. Eat organic foods as much as possible and don't eat a heavy meal close to bedtime. Also.......make sure you eat quality oils and that your vit D levels are adequate.
Excellent!
Like he said in the Video you might need to make sure you get enough B vitamins if your Vegan. I have heard of a couple people going back to eating meat. Only find out they felt better because they were short on B vitamins. The one good thing about red meat is that it is high in B vitamins. But you can supplement that and be just fine.
@@barakbalestrery4138 the person you're responding to has been a vegetarian for longer than most people in the comments section have been alive. I think they're good.
@@barakbalestrery4138: While it's true that meat has a good amount of vitamin B12, it's important to realize that older people may have a difficult time digesting it due to less intrinsic factor in their stomachs. Some nutritionists recommend that everyone over age 50 take a multivitamin with B12.
you will be dead soon not eating meat
One thing that complicates the picture with diet (other than the fact that most studies are observational and self reported) is that we don't often delve into individual genetic factors when assessing the impact of different foods, saturated fats, dietary cholesterol, etc.
My fake science theory is that the foods our ancestors ate factors into our best personal diets.
Great segment, David! thanks, Dr. Willett --Other segments: organic vs. "natural" and pesticides on our products; also, maybe a segment on soy and its effects (possibly) on women's estrogen??
Quit soft drinks, quit alcohol, quit sugar, quit processed junk food. Youll never have a weight problem then. Its a fact.
Most low-carb guru's are over-weight.
Firstly: what's in your basket in the store? Are these recognizable things? Apple, nuts. Cut processed food at the root. Also: food is made for olive oil.
If one experiences a lot of allergies and colds: try reducing gluten significantly for some weeks. It can interfere with immune responses. If it does, it clears up more.
Don't bake and cook stuff to a pulp. Taste is a habit. The taste buds are over-exited. Too much salt. Scale down: you'll get used to it.
It is difficult to change your ways. I felt lost in grocery stores after making conscious choices. One has to bite through. Serious food is a bit more rough.
OH stop with the gluten fearmongering
The entire purpose of this interview is to help cut through the pseudo science. And here you are spreading it in the comments.
Lol. If you think that eliminating gluten is going to stop someone from 'experiencing allergies', you've lost the plot. Allergies are IgE mediated (due to the presence of antibodies which cause histamine-releasing cascades when they complement/bind with relevant antigens). No amount or lack of gluten is going to get rid of these antibodies from your body.
There a plenty of reasons why some people feel better when they stop eating gluten. Placebo is probably number one, but also (as one example) cutting out significant amounts of starch as a secondary consequence probably helps many people stop overeating junk.
Tying dietary changes to health outcomes definitively is *very* difficult, and 95% of the time people think they've identified some connection from personal experience, it was just coincidental timing (the other 5% are legitimate allergic reactions, not the 'sensitivities' a naturopath 'tests' you for).
Yes, we will get used it.
Our taste buds give us positive feedback when we eat salt or sugars, leading us in the modern western world to overindulge in them. Cutting back on them can be done all at once or gradually. The all at once approach means that suddenly foods taste very different and so this approach is hard to sustain. The gradual approach gives our taste buds times to adjust and we get positive feedback that we're making a positive change, so this approach works better.
@@dustyoldhat Some people react differently to substances than others. I completely suppressed my disruptive allergies and live a different life. Allergic for grass: eat no grass.

I'll put a million dollars on it that it won't. I bet that if you eat plant based you'd be heaps healthier.
There are exceptions to every rule, and the 0.001% of humans who lived above the Arctic Circle and thrived on meat are NOT the model most humans should follow. Bless you and your ancestors for finding what works for you, but science proves most humans thrive on the Mediterranean diet.
100% correct
My friend is a vegetarian and eats very little
I eat anything that isn’t moving
Sone of us have dietary needs of a Prius. Sone of us are the equivalent of a 440 with Holley double pumpers
I grew up in the 70's, we lived our lives, ate balanced meals, were all active, had treats now and then. My Dad only started his running in his 40's, lived to be 92!
I grew up in the '60s, and can say the same. Those were the days when you could throw a dinner party and not have to ask whether attendees were vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc. You just cooked the food, everyone ate it, end of story.
@David Pakman thank you SO much for this!
My dietary needs are complex (coeliac, diabetic, with Autoimmune Liver condition - which means (among other things, that I can't digest full fat dairy) - plus an inherited prone-ness to gout - and this kind of validates what I try to do with my eating plans.
It's so much more informative than what I get from community dieticians and I thank you and this doctor for shedding light on how to get appropriate nutrition!
Thank you and Dr Walter Willet !!! This information is wonderful. I (and am sure many others) deal with dietary restrictions due to cancer surgery, familial history and ongoing health concerns in my 70's and still acting like the battery bunny! Thank you again!!! 🐇
Steak and eggs hopefully

This makes sense
Eat lean meats and fish, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit little starch and no added sugar.
I would also argue for trying a whole 30 elimination diet to if an individual may have a dairy or grain allergies. Most breads are full of preservatives now.
GOOD JOB PAKMAN. I pay attention to a diverse group of nutrician influencers and this guy is very balanced and matches the conclusions I have come to.
Yes there is limited time with these sorts of interviews but nothing mentioned about the benefits of pulses, more specifically black, kidney and fava beans and chickpeas which are a major part of the diet of those with the highest longevity.
It’s because of the soluble fiber in beans which prevents the bad fats from getting into your bloodstream in the first place. They’re like sponges for bad fats
You should get Michael Greger on the show. I’d also enjoy seeing Earthling Ed on the show to discuss the ethics of eating animals as well.
No, really, he shouldn't. No!
Plus Dr. John McDougal, Dr. Neil Bernard, Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. T Colin Campbell.
David Pakman and Earthling Ed are among my favorite CZcamsrs ….it would be a dream come true to watch them have a conversation
Having Dr. Greger or Dr. Barnard on would be fantastic!
Would LOVE to see Earthling Ed here!❤️
Well, I think that’s the first of your videos I’ve seen that. I generally agreed with your perspectives and opinions.
Great show David, thanks again!
Maybe a question that needs to be asked, is who,and what special interest, funded some of these studies. The problem, with the SAD diet( standard American diet) is all the processed food, sugar in many forms, such as high fructose corn syrup, and Industrial seed oils( canola, sunflower, corn, etc) that are highly inflammatory. One of the biggest flawed studies, were carried out by Ansel Keys, who was funded the sugar industry .
You said it perfectly. Everybody else are very confused.
Actually Keyes invented the Mediterranean diet but if you listen to journalists instead of nutrition scientists you wouldn't know that.

I'd love to see you talk to Dr. Robert Lustig and this gentleman at the same time.
It wasn't mentioned that in many cases, making your own food is a step in the right direction (depending what the food is, of course]. I will probably never give up bread, but I make mine. And yogurt (not sure if it matters much with yogurt). And most anything that is do-able at home. Not everyone can or wants to do this, but I do think it has benefit. Making children's baby food is another step in the right direction.
Thanks so much for posting this nutrition interview by itself. It's all fascinating and important.
I had a very hard time making out what the doctor was saying.
Me too, and I too have a Harvard degree. This man eats his words.
He's dancing around saying just go plant based, as he has written before, but he's dancing because people get irrational about the word(s) vegan and plant based.
Michael Pollan said it quite succinctly: Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.
It helps if it's real food, not highly processed and chemically modified!
@@mnn1265 I recently got a kitchen appliance where I can easily make my own bread. That's the last processed type of food I'd been eating. My own is so good and makes the whole house smell good!
Cheese is a plant, right?
Who's he?
@@nsbd90now yes, I make a 'cake' with mostly sweet potato, banana, honey, spices, shredded carrots and a bit of flour but I could probably substitute buckwheat (not flour) for that.
Thanks for this. My nutritionist friend tells me Eggs that are not scrambled include lecithin which balances cholesterol. Soft boiled eggs and fried may not raise cholesterol .
Also, do you feel that we individuals and have different chemistry - different responses to foods. Than
I've just started, but I'd have liked to have heard him say there is no one diet that is healthy for all human beings no matter the differences in hormone levels and how effectively they work from individual to individual, age, geographical location, physical activity, current diseases or disorders each person suffers from, etc.
I think his view on saturated fat is based on a long held view started by the sugar industry in the sixties bribing 2 Harvard professors to say that sugar is not unhealthy in any way and to point the finger at fat instead. That kicked off the low fat/no fat movement and the rise of insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes. There’s actually no causal link between saturated fat and heart disease. There are studies that have said that any evidence showing saturated fat causes heart disease is weak at best.
At last, some TRUTH to read in these comments.
lol no
@@LogicPhalanxlol YES. The phony Harvard studies the sugar lobby paid Harvard for is now common knowledge.

Lean meats, beans, nuts, seafood, whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables, water, minimally processed food, and minimal foods with added sugar.
You think? There is a whole, whole lot to criticize about that list.
@i.ehrenfest349 by all means, go ahead. I welcome the discussion.
Yes, and everything varied and in moderation.
Yes. I think your list is overall good. I make black bean soup and a vegetarian chili every week. I freeze it into single servings and have a bowel everyday. For meat, I usually eat turkey and deep water fish. I eat red meat about 1 serving a week. Honestly, I think the most important is to cut out processed food and cut down on sugar.
@@i.ehrenfest349 like what?
Helpful information. Thanks.🙂
Great interview. Thanks, David!
I don't understand this "planetary health diet." Feeding crops to livestock to make meat, dairy, and eggs has to be a no-no when it comes to sustainability. For instance, creating a calorie of beef requires 25 calories of feed over the life of that cow. Pork and chicken come in at 15 and 9 calories to make one calorie. Fresh water consumption follows a similar pattern. Then there is the methane generation issue. So any diet that avoids meat & dairy has to be better for the planet.
Nope

Now David Packman likes “science”
2 Eggs a day and a 16 oz mug of coffee every morning is what I do and I am a Highlander and will celebrate my 212th birthday next month
I'm single, I eat hot fudge sundaes, pizza, Taco bell, Filet-O-Fish's. Not many vegetables. I think I may already be dead. 💀
I hope you're washing all that down with a mug of healthy olive oil.
He started off okay. Once he tried to pass off the “meat is directly linked with diabetes” shtick without explaining the nuance, and limitations of the epidemiological studies that information came from, and what the other foods people were consuming with the meat, I knew he was either severely biased or limited in knowledge.
Exactly. Meat is not causing diabetes. It's carbs and sugar. And sugar is in almost everything now. You body doesn't process fructose, so it goes straight to the liver where it is turned into fat.
@@tarag7292 Yeah it’s pretty simple. Diabetes is having chronically high glucose in the blood stream. Meat has 0 carbs, and almost doesn’t spike glucose at all. Almost like less sugar in the blood is good for controlling a disease with too much sugar in the blood.
@@Medeski-Medieval Exactly!
Wow you have no idea who this guy is right? Why would he go in to that level of detail here in a 20 minute interview? Plant Chompers does a detailed interview with the co-author of the study. You clearly don't understand how diabetes works.
@@mobydog99 Yes, I know who this guy is. And there are doctors who debunked his non sense. There is no concrete evidence that saturated fat alone is linked to diabetes.
Dr. Ancel Keys was the one who linked fat with ill health by cherry picking his data. Since then, experts linked dietary fat as the worse thing to eat despite the fact that humans had been eating fat for thousands of years.
Sugar is linked to the epidemic of obesity and diabetes. And even studies have correlate the rise of sugar consumption over the decades to poor health and obesity, and it sky rocketed after the invention of high fructose corn syrup.
I am sorry but I get sick of people demonizing red meat and ignoring other factors like carbs and sugar, and ignoring how these macronutrients are processed in the body.
Always had a low resting heart rate. 60's and 50's per minute. Possibly because I was athletic in youth and still work out moderately in my late 60's and also a life-long vegetarian. A few months ago the wife and gave up diary and switched to nearly total plant-based diet. I was a bit overweight and lost 25 lbs so far and my most recent resting heart rate is 47 beats per minute which is top 1% of population. Again, my physical exercise is only moderate. This outcome suggests my circulation system is cleaning out and more working more efficiently then ever before.
This outcome comports with similar to outcomes reported in recent Stanford Twins Study where sets of identical twins were each fed either plant-based or omnivore diets. Improved cardiovascular effects for the plant-based twin was one of the most prominent findings of the study.
Very good. Thanks for the information.
I think if we raised our crops and animals free of antibiotics, herbicides and pesticides it would help everyone's health status. I do agree with the fruit, veggie diet along with your proteins and healthy grains. No overeating, either.
What?!? Others, also associated with prestigious universities, disagree with him, especially on seed oils. THESE are the food products with big money behind them. We've gone very far that direction, and heart disease is still high. We're overwhelmed with chronic diseases on all these highly processed foods, including seed oils.
“Listening” is hard, you failed!
Darlin how old are you? With some wisdom, you will understand that for every "expert" you will find an equal and opposite "expert" who disagrees with them. Ad nauseam.
Yeah but few of those people discussing seed oils as unhealthy have their names on 2000 studies as Dr. Willet here does. I used to believe that myth but I think even better is just not using oil anyways. Empty calories. Only olive oil is with it for the flavor.@@dustyoldhat
Clearly you don't know who Willett is
@@mobydog99 Willett has his name on like 2000 studies, he's the one that knows the right answer.. want you can tell he's actually a scientist because he doesn't like to say things concretely as "correct" because scientists have to accept the information as it comes and be open to it.
Would love to see Dr. Willett back on the show
More of this type of content please!
Dr. Willett is certainly knowledgeable. I challenge you, David, to put Dr. Berry on for a counterpoint. These epidemiological studies are notoriously flawed. In empirical double-blind studies, on the other hand, animal fats are not linked to cardiovascular disease. I hope you don't count this one voice as the last word.
As prominent and educated as he is, Dr. Willet is still hung up on old school nutritional dogma. I agree, have Dr. Barry on or Dr. Jason Fung. Dr. Hyman, even Dr Berg.
