Overlanding Trails in Appalachia - From Tennessee to North Carolina

  • I randomly came up with the idea to try to make it from Ocoee Tennessee to Asheville North Carolina on dirt roads, forest roads and other back roads. I found this to be rather challenging with all of the closed roads in the Appalachian mountains. To add to the challenges was camping in the rain. Overland travel is not always a piece of cake and this video shows just that.

    Chainsaw and loopers are essential. I love the 20v dewalt chainsaw. Put a 16” Oregon bar on it with a 9ah Dewalt battery and that thing can put in some work.

      you really think they care what I have to say about it .?. I’m clearly not the only with this concern, there was lots of resistance and yet it was still done. Most of the closures are permanent and will never be reopened. Even the seasonal roads are now all just dead end road with only one way in and one way out. Some of the roads are still there and there is just a gate small section in the middle that has been closed to make sure there is only one way in amd one way out

    Thanks for taking us on another adventure. Bummer you had to keep re-routing, but as a novice off-roader here, I appreciate you showing the reality of what can happen on these trails. 5:30 mark - historic Hiwassee Meeting Hall - I visited that area last summer for the first time (Reliance, TN) and tried to explore some forest roads around there, but guess what - the gates were closed on almost every one of them (and it hadn't even rained). 16:33 - think I would be freaking out at that point (seeing the ledge beyond those boulders), but you were totally chill. Your videos are encouraging me to start exploring more. Thanks!

      @@popcorngJG Not strictly true. I live in the boonies & I've hacked down small trees with them, say 6" or so. The problem with them for overlanding would be that the batteries don't last long at all: you take down one 6" diameter tree, that battery is DONE, and not being very techy I haven't found a way to charge them in the truck. The spare batteries seem to go dead even when they're not being used, and they take a long time to charge back up. "Long time" as in ALL of an overnight sleep. I was like Jethronius & thought I'd get one to keep in my car, since I live in the vicinity of Chattanooga & yes, trees come down here constantly from the rain. Unfortunately they just don't work for that. I wish they did, b/c I'm disabled & have trouble pulling the starter on a gas one. 😞 That being said, with 2 freshly charged batteries I think mine would have handled the trees in the video. You just hve to be strategic in how you do it.

    A lot of the reason trails are closed in the winter time is due to the freeze thaw cycle. It causes the soil on the roads to be softer than normal and makes it really easy to destroy the roads even when your taking your time. If they didn't close them during the winter cycle then they would all be closed due to damage and erosion.

    Is there a way to find out why the trail roads are closed? Or a schedule of when they are open/closed.

    • @popcorngJG
      @popcorngJG Před 5 lety +1

      A lot of them close in winter or when there is excess rain.... We have had a lot of rain this winter... The government shutdown backed up the road clearing also

    • @missedyadobalina8619
      @missedyadobalina8619 Před 5 lety

      You can always check in at ranger/sheriff stations. Anywhere they do search and rescue there's a good amount of people they can radio happy to pass along road conditions

    You sir must be a glutton for punishment. :) seems somewhere there would be within our efficient and organized “gubment”, maybe ? someone, somewhere could say --- hey, there’s a BUNCH of road closings in this “whole” area “right now cus of all the rain,,,, or whatever. I dunno..... I probably woulda self destructed & done something real stoopid along the way !!!!!! LOL-cool vid bro.

    • @SirWilliamGoes
      @SirWilliamGoes  Před 4 lety +1

      They close roads for all sorts of reasons and are pretty lax about updating the closures especially when they can't figure out if they are working or not due to funding. I plan on talking with the NFS one day to discuss this very topic

      Sir William Goes- Go sic em’ Sir, but yeah I can see allot of peeps / tourists that aren’t prepared, at all, getting lost in “dem thar hills” and then the State’s employees have to bring out the dogs & every body gets paid overtime. (Except the local wheelers that enjoy doing good deeds & wheeling. 👍🇺🇸
