What made Karen so amazing was that she could not only sing like an angel, but was also one excellent drummer. I believe no artist today can touch Karen's level of talent.
I think what a lot of people don't know is playing the drums and singing at the same time is very very very hard to do. Not to many musicians were able to do that. Phil Collins, Don Henley, believe it or not which you would never guess,GINGER BAKER WAS ABLE. THERE ARE A FEW MORE BUT I AM REPLYING RIGHT NOW.. BUT YOU GET IT. BUT KAREN WAS TOUCHED BY THE HAND OF GOD. I TRULY BELIEVE THAT SOME PEOPLE WERE. NOT JUST IN MUSIC, IN THE ART WORLD, SCIENCE, PHYSICS. AGAIN, YOU GET IT
Everything you said, but add the fact that she had so much presence , charm and charisma
❤ Karen Carpenter forever❤
i'm sure someone somewhere can.
A lovely 19 yr old Karen Carpenter. A one of a kind natural, smooth sounding voice and a beautiful personality to boot. Sorely missed. RIP Karen.
18 Years Old. Born 2 March 1950 so she's still two months from her 19th birthday. Simply amazing talent and, yes, sorely missed. 😪
What an absolute miracle and sweetheart Karen was!
I’ve never seen Karen so healthy, innocent and adorable as in this video.
Ela estava parecendo uma outra pessoa
She was 19.
Karen is absolutely gorgeous and adorable here! What a gift from GOD she was!
So innocent and beautiful young girl with golden voice what only nature can make !! Her name is Karen Carpenter !!
Karin was an icon....My believe, she would have changed the music industry completely if she were alive today... Karin was unique...... and everyone knew it.
She would have been an Ella fitzgerald of her time!
I remember when i was 12 and i saw karen on tv .she stoped me in my tracks. I thought she was the most beautiful woman i had ever saw. Now at 56 i still think the same thing. Funny how your first crush never fades.

GREAT TALENT AND BEAUTIFULWOMAN
Simply the best female pop singer of all time.....
No-one has ever come close. And I've been buying and playing records for nearly 50 years.
Yep, no one can compare. When her voice comes on radio, you know it's Karen.
i just checked, ranked 97th in rolling stop top 100 vocalist of all-time, no way, for me, she is the top female vocalist of all-time; nat king cole best male vocalist by the way,
@@SueRosalie Okay, Barbra wasn't a pop singer, but her voice was just as beautiful and just as unique. Those two top the list for me, tied for 1st.
@@cheykoase Interesting. Karen was the richest female voice I have ever heard and Nat was the richest male voice I have ever heard.
She really was a beautiful young woman.. And that voice, oh that voice.
She is exceedingly beautiful which matches her PERFECT VOICE. The World REALLY lost an irreplaceable treasure/person when she passed.
Instant stardom on the very first note that poured from Karen’s mouth. I’m amazed at how I unfazed she was being with two giants like Arthur Godfrey and Ed Sullivan. Uncommon confidence. The Carpenters are 2 of the most under-rated, first-class, laser perfect musicians in the industry. If the people don’t recognize it, the industry does. The very essence of excellence.
Karen is adorable. She had such personality along with her timeless talent.
Incredible voice and amazing drummer.. so glad I saw them in concert in 1971.. she will never be replaced.. unforgettable 🎶❤️🎶
Karen looks so pretty here.
+costernocht Apart from when the anorexia became severe and completely impossible to ignore, when doesn't she (look pretty)? I mean, she looks pretty even when she's making funny faces! I like that one cute pic, where she's wearing a polka dot blouse and black vest, and sticking her tongue out... presumably at Richard. :P
References to who is and who isn't pretty is the social climate that contributed to her death.
Yes, but on the other hand, if she knew how pretty she was she might not have developed Anorexia. So many men were in love with her, yet she starved herself away.
@@obscurelyvague also because of her good looks, they wanted her out front and away from her drums. This was the major factor in her demise. She was happiest playing drums and she was a great drummer.
Love Karen! She is so pretty, talented, focused making her natural talent so, soo Golden! The drummer/singer I love! Richard is an inspiration and role model for me how well he arranged and wrote and played so perfect performances along with his sister Karen! The two were meant to be and so Golden. A Blessing from Heaven! And, individually as well! Deep respects and admiration!
Precious dear Karen...
She blessed the world with such
an angelic voice and exquisitely beautiful songs. I loved their sibling harmonies...
Rest in peace, Angel 🙏
Before fame and it's trappings polluted Karen Carpenter. She was so beautiful and healthy looking in this video.
Her mother reportedly told her that Richard is the one who is a serious musician and that she cannot hope to equal him by playing the drums.
"Fame" is probably not the main or sole thing.
If only Karen had continued to sing AND played drums along all her carrier... She was as excellent drummer as singer. So beautiful woman. We miss her talent and natural beauty.
What an amazing woman Karen was with an angelical voice. She just reaches in and grabs you by your soul.
She looks and sounds like an angel!
She was one of a kind...such expression and depth of feeling in her vocals. This clip is a treasure!
Must be a reason I'm seeing this right now.⛏
And not just her singing vocals. Even her speaking voice and personality is mesmerizing.
I am happy I stumbled upon this.
I love it when Karen plays the drums, it's a shame there aren't a lot more clips of her doing it.
I believe her brother didn´t her to do it any more
Lau Ra Only sometimes, Richard would tell him sometimes in front, and sometimes at the drums.
This is solid gold!! I now know why I was/am in love with her!! Karen and Richard were a marvelous team!! At 19 she was a treasure house of talent.
Karen looks young, pretty and healthy. Love her voice....
I never seen Karen look ever so more beautiful!
Despite Arthur Godfrey's ridiculous intro, and Ed Sullivan's oogling of Karen - not to mention Richard stuck in back, completely out of camera range - this clip is a gem. Karen's musical soul - a totally natural expression - was, in my opinion, what sustained her for those brief thirty-two years of her life.
The most beautiful girl in the world now and forever.
God bless her
Awesome
Yes, but unfortunately SHE didn't see it...
that's true I agree
But she didn't know it. Just 13 years later she would be gone. Sad.
The second performance was her live voice! She was very beautiful!

Wow - I was 3 months into my 1st semester as a music major at CSULB (Long Beach State College) when this show aired. Karen looks so GOOD here, HEALTHY, vibrant & alive. So sad, that such a talented young lady fell into the grips of anorexia, which weakened her heart to the point of failure, ultimately killing her. Such a shame, such a waste of a life which should have continued for so many years beyond her short life.
To me Karen was happiest when she was playing the drums.
Love, love, love Karen Carpenter!
By far the most beautiful woman I have ever seen
she looked great in her young years
Some considered her plump, but I think this was a very good weight for her.
That is just amazing that the host said they are going to be lip-synching, it’s very difficult to do! Very very cool, and refreshing the honesty. Of course they were both incredibly talented, so it all works
She was do beautiful, then, you add the voice and personality, truly a legend.
She was really really really pretty.
It's a shame that Karen did not understand that. Almost every time I hear her angelic voice, tears quickly well up in contemplation of the great her tragic death brought the world.
She truly was and if makes me so sad that she never saw that. Beautiful girl with a beautiful voice.
To hell with her being pretty. Listen to her SING! And play drums! She could've looked like a mud fence! Listen to that voice!!!!!
@@fullplate100 she had it all. If only she'd believed in herself.
Su hno Carpenter tambien tenia lo suyo talento para componer canciones y ella las cantaba magistralmente
Still listening in 2017 anyone?
still listening in 2018 and forever and always love KAC
Of course!
Still listening in 2019! Forever and ever Karen Carpenter. Forever forever 1000 * forever I love her
2019 here too
@@karenkramer3760 I just got replied to mentioning Karen: who is she.? The only answer I had was a question: Do you live in a cave somewhere?
I have never seen so much passion in a person's eyes.
I'm surprised and enjoyed to watch 18 Y.O beautiful sweet Karen.
The Carpenters did Japan-only ads for Suntory way back. Beautiful little things in Engrish, barely mention the product. I love it.
Her voice still blows me away and I must admit I think she is gorgeous. RIP Karen.
Karen has always been so adorable. She also had that charisma and sense of humor. She always had that “star” quality and the tv cameras absolutely loved her !!! We first met her as this shy teenage girl and we got to see her grow up and develop her talent into a beautiful young lady with the most magical voice. Such a tragic loss, and I personally have never cried to any other artist. I truly believe she knows NOW how much she is truly loved and missed. 💜💜💜
Love this I was 2 months old then. Beautiful Karen Beautiful voice.
I always wanted to BE Karen Carpenter...(and I'm a boy!!)
Her timing was always impeccable. A little bitty clock was in her mind.

Full eyebrows. I like it.
+Joe Blow Exactly. I don't know why she felt like she needed to pluck them in the mid-late 70's.... she looked so much more healthy and natural, as-is.
@@rkmugen ikr but it was the fashion at the time.
@@SueRosalie Bushy brows came back in the early-to-mid-'80s with Brooke Shields, Jennifer Connelly, Madonna, and Kathy Ireland...but by then, Karen was gone. : (
Karen CARPENTER was so beautiful and a great artist.
Karen looks amazing here.
Karen was not quite 19 in this performance, and she looked absolutely stunning! Loved the original tracking of 'Ticket to ride', and of course, Karens voice...perfect as always! Lip syncing is hard to perform, without it looking so false, and Karen did it perfectly. I have the LP of Ticket to ride, but wish I had Offering, as it was the original, and a little more basic! Karens voice will live on in the recordings, and I hope her voice will live on long after I'm gone!!!
That’s Arther Godfrey with Ed a Sullivan and The Carpenters. Love this..she was just 19. So talented both of them!
I remember seeing this on TV and was blown away that a girl played the drums! I thought it was super cool. I was 10 years old.
They made the best versions of The Beatles I've heard so far.
She went away when I was 12... Her death was as troubling to me as her voice was beautiful... and to this very day I am saddened by her needless passing
I was also 12 when she made her transition. Devastating.
It's sad... She would be 71 if she were alive today. Minnie Riperton would have been 74, another budding young star of the '70s
The snicker she lets out at 00:35 is priceless:)
What a beautiful angel! ❤️
This was great for them starting out and what a wonderful singing career they had before it ended all too soon.
Karen is more beautiful then I thought, so sad what happened to her, she was so special, people like her should be here till there 100 not 32 :-(
Yet mostly evil bad people get to live long lives.
@@martymartin2894 Sadly this is true...
@@martymartin2894 Right. If Karen had been a meaner person, she would likely still be here. But she was a people pleaser.
She was more than special Karen and her brother they so good caring in how they were . They always be my favorite band, music it fills my head and its a great way to be. Thank you so much for all your work and talents to us!
If Karen & Richard had been allowed to play live that audience would have been blown out of the water
She was still a teenager then, I think 19 years old and beautiful too. 💕
She looks so pretty! And watching her play drums is always a treat.
Lol - every time I click on a carpenter vid it’s this song - whether it’s 1968 or 1978
OK wow I've never seen anybody tell an audience they were lip syncing lol ... This is so cool to see, especially since it's the original vocal cut and not the one she did for the singles compilation a few years later. Thanks for the post.
what a natural, smooth reassuring nature Karen has, her genuineness is a loving reminder how during stress, slow up your speech and weave in humor … ❤ God she’s a super star… I saw the Carpenters in Ft Wayne Indiana in the ‘70s. Richard is also a super star, his arrangements created their timing, coupling the complex arrangements with her style in voice harmonies was GENIUS! ❤
she looks so beautiful here - what a rare treasure she was
They both look so young and fresh here, Karen is just a gem! She was great on those drums and that voice was so magical. Wonderful, vintage footage. Thx for posting.
Fantastic Voice... Beautiful song...
Her voice is so beautifully
What a Talent and so beautiful....
A national treasure. RIP Lead Angel
Not too mention that they picked one of the greatest songs ever, by THE Greatest band ever. Completely their own style. 💖
Ah time - Thou art indeed powerful . In an instant thou showeth thine true colors and are gone forever.
19years old....amazing!
Tnx for posting. Karen's personality is so well-suited for showbiz tht it's truly a shame she left us so young
'Ticket To Ride' was their first chart single; peaked at no. 54 pop
Really Karen is great in talent. No words to say, only listen to. She is a godness.
so beautiful...
For those who don't know, the two hosts are Ed Sullivan and Arthur Godfrey. Ed, of course, was a Sunday night viewing staple for many years. Arthur Godfrey was one of the very first television superstars in the late 1940's and early '50's.
This was aired only two weeks before I was born. I arrived just a bit too late! But thank God for CZcams where we can see many of the things we missed.
Karen looks like an angel.
Pure Gold !
They prided themselves on NEVER lip-syncing!!
+Bonnie Chiaccio You are so correct Bonnie, THANK YOU for mentioning that, they wanted everything to sound just like the studio, years later, their production manager said, you don't have to always sound like the record in concert, improvise a little, but they wanted PERFECTION in all their songs.
Love this women!! RIP see ya in 30 years? or less :)(:
With all the perfections attributed to Karen , her looks ,her singing, her drumming, her sense of humor, she even had the perfect name
Karen Anne Carpenter
Perfect!
Unbelievable. Still gives me chills, after 50 years. And she lip-synced perfectly. All this, and only 19 years old.
I wish I knew her!
and she had only 19 years old...simply impressive!
I love how the host just throws at our faces that they are faking the presentation.
Daemon I know! It's interesting because the Carpenters did a LOT of lip syncing.
@@winterdesert1 but all tv studio shows were recorded like that back then. Watch the outdoor live performances and Karen's singing and drumming are even better.
Question: How do you "lip sync" the drums? In other words, is she playing the drums over the drums? Richard's electric? piano can be turned off, but what about the drums? Just wondering.
What a tool Arthur Godfrey was for pointing out the "lip syncing". Totally clueless.
@@winterdesert1 the whole song was a record, they just mimic everything. I believe it was done in case they did something wrong.
she is in another level of feeling...she is in another state of consciousness when she sings...it is she likes travels to the most in-depth emotion of the song....or to the soul of the matter or of the original feeling felt by the composer.
QUE HERMOSA SE VE KAREN EN ESTE VIDEO....WOOOWWWW...
I beg to differ. Karen was already packin' that pure alto even here at the tender age of 19.
+wannawatchu66 Incredible for 19 and she started to sing @ 16, many people don't know that, just pure raw talent, she should be in the Hall of Fame.
+wannawatchu66 Yes. Her voice is already fully developed.
contralto.
yes and it's one of the astonishing things that made her so unique. The quality of her vocals at teenage was already right there and equal to ten years later.
Who woudn't love her ? She'd been sweet like candy fruit. Her voice allready hinted the Great singer. I was 20y.o. ; She 19y.o. and I felt deeply in love with Her that 1969.
Su voz no se apago solo que Dios se la llevo a cantar con los demas angeles como ella
que hermosa y talentosa chica... excelente baterista y con esa increíble voz. QEPD

she was so nice
Class at its best
Niente di più bello a questo mondo: l'unione tra la voce ed il viso di Karen! Pura magia ...
