- So you want to make some cool woozy noises don't ya? I know you've got your eye on that HKS SSQV BOV and just thinking about all those ladies that you'll impress as you drive down the road sounding like a full fledged race car. But let's step back and take a look at what the actual differences are between BOV's and Bypass valves. There is the legend, the myth and the horror that a BOV will damage your engine. But will it really?......

Sir, thank you for the massive information dump you have released upon me lol. Just picked up my second wrx. 1st was a 2002 wrx and now we have a 2017 wrx. I have so many ideas for this car and your channel has opened my eyes to so many pros and cons of things I've had in mind. Seriously thank you for all the videos and for all of your time. To be honest I have a trucking channel and I'll be trucking and just let your channel play in the background. So much info bro. Thank you again. Stay safe sir. Oh and its completely stock with 43k miles on it.
I had a 2016 Jeep Renegade with the 1.4 Turbo Fiat engine and 6 speed manual and it had a BOV from the factory. It was surprisingly audible too
Another great video! This really helped understand the difference.
Thank you! Trying to get the discussion/debate posts so they eliminate the need for people to have ti do a lot of research on topics before making a choice on what they want to do. 😁
You should have a lot more subscribers man. Your content is super informative 👌
I appreciate that! Only bern making videos for a few months now but really enjoying it. I'm always open to any topics or discussions people have so if you ever have any feel free to shoot them my way!
Thanks for your videos I'm 2 days in to my stock 2021 18,000 mile wrx already love it
One of the best videos on the topic! Excellent!!
You helped a lot of people out man! Thanks 😊
Bpv’s keep boost bov has to remake boost. That’s what I learned
Good way to remember it, simple and to the point
@@Smeedia thank you for explaining this i drive a chevy cruze, love my turbo noise and watch this when I wanted to see what I can do for mine. Just upgrading my stock spring .
Makes me happy you made a video to my previous question I had for you 😇
Its an important topic, Like I said id love taking requests for videos. :)
Makes so much since years ago had a Mazda speed 3 gen1 which i replaced the BPV to a BOV. Literally had every issue you stated. Not worth the trademark whoosh. Went back with a Cobb BPV and went through new spark plugs prior of going back to BPV. No bueno. Great video bro!
Hey wish I found your channel lot sooner now binging on your content. Merry Christmas from down under Australia new subscriber
Merry christmas to you as well! Appreciate the support. Been a while since I was down in Australia, beautiful country!
I'm making the step to finally mod my 2014 STI Hatch. I have a buddy that works on Subaru's for a living but I'm the kind of person that has to know what is happening and not just rely on someone to tamper with my dream car. I've learned so much from your channel. I'm new to the channel but If you haven't already made a video on this topic it would be nice to cover the countless acronyms that come with the modification world. Being new to this I have had to stop your videos many times to look up acronyms and there meaning. Great work on the channel. Thanks dude!
Not a bad idea, I'll definitely make that video to break down what the acronyms are, at least the commonly used ones 😁
Thank you for this informative info! Definitely going for BPV for my XT Forester
How'd it turn out?
The scream at the end felt way better than the other videos LOL. Awesome info
Haha i was really feeling it on this one 😅 and thank you!
I like my Perrin recirc. Helps hold moderate pressure in charge pipes between shifts unlike the oem bpv the dumbs everything and you have to build it back up.
Thanks for helping me choose which one to get!
Which one did you decide on?! 😁
Thanks for the information. Great videos man!
Thank you, the support it appreciated! Wanting to help the community out where I can!
If you have a blow through MAF (sensor after turbo) and BOV after MAF you can have all the BOV goodness with no real drawbacks (other than turbo RPZm dropping more than it would with BPV)
I have a GFB Decepter Pro 2, with a module I can use to open and close the valve from in the cabin. Basically for the sound and the novelty. Once I got the cobb intake I barely open the BOV and keep it on recirc most of the time. The sound from the intake is better when its closed (the cobb one sounds like a flutter).
So basically, if you are after sound, you may as well just get the intake and avoid aftermarket bov, your wallet will thank me.
Picked up another sub! Thanks bro! Great info.
Appreciate the support 🙏🙏🙏
You're my best reference for my car mods!
Eyyyy 😁😁😁 appreciate the support! 😁
great video bro really helpful!. new subscriber🔥
Thank you appreciate the support 🔥😁
By the time you were finished saying bypass valve the video was liked hahaha this was a very informative video ! Thank you sir!
Appreciate the support! 😁😁😁
I’ve literally just changed mine back from a dump valve to my stock recirc again.
The sound was fun and the throttle shut afterfire/bang were cool. But the lag in gear changes from losing all the boost is REALLLY noticeable. Did some pulls last night and jesus just keeps pulling rather than the car bouncing around the second clutch is dipped.
I hadn’t noticed how bad it was till i changed it.
Coming off throttle with the dump valve felt like hitting a wall almost like applying the brakes.
With the recirc it almost feels like it just keeps pulling just stops accelerating.
So you got a bypass valve? & if so witch one exactly if you dont mind me asking
I notice this with my recirc BOV. Once recirculate there was a noticeable difference with pulls when shifting. Most it’ll drop is like 2-3 psi in the upshifts. Super happy with the sounds and power right now
@@jonshuacaceres9828 I was thinking about buying a BOV for my Mustang ecoboost. Wanted that psshh sound but I heard you lose a lot of power with it. It doesnt really show a lot of stuff about it on the internet but when i kept watching videos about it, some people claim it really does make you lose some power so im thinking if its even worth getting anymore?
@@mjaliazasif you want the turbo sound, get a intake, downpipe, to a strait pipe, or a cat back.
Thanks bro. That build is insane
Thank you! 😁
Great explanation dawg 🙏
Nice video. Just installed the Boomba BPV on my 2020 WRX. Absolutely feel the difference, better throttle response, definitely can feel the HP Gains. Little Flutter between shifts.
Bryce Gutierrez you on a tune?
Vasilios Nikolopoulos no tune.
@@vasiliosnikolopoulos6384 yeah boomba's bpv/bov doesn't need a special tune. It functions the same as the stock ones according to them
Probably the most useful info I could find on youtube
Appreciate the awesome feedback 😁
Smeedia don’t mention it! BOF sounds like fun but BPV sounds like the safer route as far as reliability goes.
Great video! So just to recap, for my completely stock motor (2005 WRX), there's no benefit in switching out the stock BPV for something else. If I want some noise but don't want to mess up the running of the car, I could get a hybrid BOV, so that some of the air is recirculated and some vented. Assuming that's all correct then, three years after making this vid, do you have any other recommendations for a hybrid BPV/BOV??
my stock 2017 Forester XT has a good wooshy noise. was curious to learn more about how the turbo works. very interesting video.
That was a lot of information to be said but I did leave learning something(s).
Glad you were able to get something out of it! I also dig your video idea that you commented as well! I'll get it added to the que!
I was torn between the two for awhile until i decided to go with a Dual Port BOV! what this means is it vents both to the atmosphere and back into the air intake - Increasing performance due to minimized leakage and rapid response. Best of both worlds! ;)
But won’t you still get better performance on the BPV
Which brand?
@@TiKiHudson Turbosmart
@@extremeencounter7458you do tho
I love my boomba bpv, get that nice flutter sound lol
Is it on the Wrx or Sti
@@CR-Z24 wrx only no sti versions
so he said at 3:25 u dont get the flutter but I've seen videos for the wrx with the boomba with it so is there some other mod or is the boomba
@@lifeisgood7807 you can go check out the Boomba BPV on their youtube channel they have a comment section all about it. You can still get the flutter even if the WRX is bone stock and you don't need any other mods and still recirculates the air 100%.
@@blackdiamondyt2838 thank you! ill check em out
If you can look at my turbocharged setup.
There is no wastegate in the exhaust system.
I’m using a BOV to control the boost.
Basically the blow off valve opens at set boost pressure.
It works perfectly the car doesn’t overboost or anything but there’s a loud shisss noise like boost hose is leaking
i'm using a gfb response bov on my wrx .Set to 90/10 recirculate and it runs fine
I had the same one on my 07 STI, when I went to get pro tuned I did a smoke test to verify everything before going on the dyno and mine was leaking causing the turbo to work a little harder to compensate for lost boost. No immediate danger but long term could cause damage, if it's working for ya than that's all that matters! I would just ensure that if there is a leak you can correct it, I lived the GFB when I had it. It was a happy medium for noise.
Great energy and information
The positive feedback is much appreciated! 😁
ive got the HKS on my 10th gen Si, after hearing about what BOVs can do over time now has me worried, when you say a " MAF or MAP car " what does that mean ? im afraid im gonna have to take my BOV off now due to what youre saying could happen as i do have quite a few mods, such as a mishimoto intercooler and intake and the phearable stage 1.5 tune.
Edit: im seeing something called a recirculation kit for the SSQV and wondering if that will help ? i do have the full assembly SSQV in which it is right next to my intake and doesnt replace the oem bpv
For the gfb did you leave the gasket on? I've seen alot of people stating your supposed to take the gasket off bc it'll cause a leak
Very informative. Thanks
Thank you 😁
Can I loose power or have problems if I disconnect the return hose on the intake from my BOV? I have a KW turbocharger
Hey Tanner, do you now anything about the stock BPV on the FA20 motors having a squeak on deceleration from 2k to 1k rpm? I started hearing it after installing the Cobb intake.
Great video bro!!!
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Great video 👍
Good info but was hard to watch. Go pee bro
Appreciate the I put, I generally just move around a lot 😅
@@Smeedia moving around isn't a deal-breaker, but you did well at keeping "thinking" words to a minimum IE uh's and um's. I am new to modding these cars and appreciate the content. keep it up!
Appreciate the feedback! I just generally move a lot😅
i'm 10 months late to this comment, but it is pure gold.
@@Smeedia I'm like that but I have Asperger's and a touch of ADD.
Thanks for the video, just got a 17 sti, previous owner had a HKS BOV with the stock maf, and ive noticed my AFR dipped to 11 when i shift normal no boost or nothin, or if i put it into neutral it dips to 11 then to 20, also on pulls shifting it not smooth at all. And sometimes the car dies and rpm drop down to 500. So just ordered a Boomba BPV so should fix my problems.
The face that you have under 100k subs is crazy. People really don’t know what they’re missing out on
😁😁😁
@@Smeedia what headlights would you recommend? I’m kinda looking at the circuit demon V2 with gills
Thinking about putting an Atmospheric BOV on a stage 1 protune. Car is completely stock except axlebacks and high flow air filter. Would the car read that there isn't air recirculating and keep the air fuel ratio the same; therefore, not having an issue with it running rich?
Such a good video. I kept fucking laughing though because some of the time you were filming it looked like you were holding in a poop. haha. Glad I found your channel dude.
I mean ya never know 👀 could have been prairie digging 🤣 appreciate the support my dude l, glad the content was up to par! 😁
i got a question, is the boomba bypass valve a good option?? looking into getting one for my 21 Sti
This dude is one of the most underrated CZcamsr. I’m surprise he hasn’t blow up yet. He’s getting knowledgable.
Appreciate the support my friend 🙏
Thumbs up ...very informative.
Thank you! 🙌🔥
Great info 👍🏼
Thank you! 😁
Off throttle compressor surge does not slow the turbo and yes people have tested it, the "stall" is the air flow separating from the blades, it's actually better for response then running a valve because boost pressure is not released and doesn't need to be built up again, this is why it's common place in motorsport not to run a valve.
Go a question I own a 2000 Subaru Impreza wrx s would the blow off valve do any damage to the car or do you thinks it’s best to get a bypass or hybrid
i have a hks super sqv4 bov for my 2017 wrx i got it pro-tuned but recently it turned on the check engine after maybe 3-5 days after the pro tune , any thought of what it could be
Complete stock 2018 wrx sti but i'm need for woosh sounds haha any recommendations while keeping the reliability of the car??
Does that Turbosmart TS-0203-1215 fit 2015+ WRX (Non STI)? Website is not clear and I know the BPV moved to under instead of on top by TMIC
So question what about the boomba bpv is it good? Because I heard it makes a flutter sound ?
Silly Question, but is there a reason why you show you run the COBB BPV, but don't have it under your 'recommended' BPV's here?
Personally, I use COBB parts when I can (AoS/EBC/Airbox/etc), so am hoping that there isn't an issue with using that.
No issues with it at all! If I did not link it then I missed it but its my number 1 recommendation 🔥😁
@@Smeedia Ok, that's what I thought, was just surprised I didn't see it under the BPV listing. :)
You just saved my Wrx I love you lol
I have black above my tailpipes. Is that a sign of running rich. On and off i get a quick break up low rpm inbetween shifts,
Is it good for Sti stock engine 2020 if I get BOV hybrid and set 60/40. And Need tune? Any problems on engine? Thank you
I have a 2015 c300 with a k&n air filter ,down pipe and stages 2 street tune and i cant figure out what one i want to.go with
Damn that WRX is clean.
Hey @Smeedia I have a question...if I were to put a metal Plate in replace of the bov/bpv so the air can’t escape would it damage anything on my 2017 wrx? I have seen multiple videos of people doing this to get louder turbo flutter!
You can but you'll need to at least tune the car for it so it has an idea of where the air is going 🔥 it shouldn't damage anything
This was a good one and it just happens to be what I'm debating for my 03 wrx when I bought the car it came with a HKS Super SQV4 BOV it sounds cool and all but something feels off. I have a GFB TMS Respons Hybrid BOV that I've been thinking of swapping in and seeing if that fixes the issue. who knows though I might just sell both of them and get a Nameless BPV
What did you end up doing?
Where do you live at bro? I just recently purchased a modified Subaru wrx 2012 and took it into Surgeline tuning and there are some poor parts but it’s doing me good and it’s nothing to major but I am wanting to get at least 400 hp and I’m still learning and it’s my first Subaru but your Chanel has helped a lot!
I'm in the Seattle Area, surgeline is om of my go to and a very trust worth shop!
I Have a Cobb intake I have that sound when I get on boost sounds good with my oem bpv
I have cobb intake as well stock bpv. It sounds like a bov anyway lol.
I thought that good aftermarket BPVs help smooth out power delivery and even increase power down low, the stock one mainly focusing on the middle of the rpm range. Am I wrong?
@Smeedia Hi Mr Smeedia, I have both GFB Responses BOV and Grimmspeed BPV on hand at the moment, either one I will go 100% recirculating set up. Which one you would prefer to go with? I love both of psh and stutu sound, really hard to decide.
10/10 on thr grimmspeed. GFB has a tendency to leak 🙏
@@Smeedia Now I got an idea to go!! Thanks Smeedia
Alright sorry if this gets long , I currently have the HKS SSQ BOV for my 2017 STi.
I plan on installing with the full recirculation kit, but would it be ok to go full vent / mix
Once I get a protune? Would a tune fix out all the disadvantages? I still want that whoosh sound overall
My setup with the protune is going to look like:
COBB SF Intake + AP
HKS BOV SSQ
Invidia catless downpipe
Tomei expreme catback
IAG Air Oil Separator ( street series)
A tune would fix the vast majority of the issues, the WCU just needs to know where the air is going since its not going back into the system
I plan to get a perrin blowoff valve on a, basicallly stock jdm ej205 (All it has is an intake, exhaust, and aos) If I were to get it tuned would that get rid of potential issues(I have to get the car tuned regardless cause of the ecu im running) and if not is there any supporting mods that are a must install to run on a daily street car (i want cause of the noise, yes im aware i sound like a child)
ooo that TMG banner
I have been looking at doing aftermarket seats. You should make a video on race harnesses and if they are safe for a road car!
I'm getting some soon, about a month or two. Once I get them in I'll gladly cover them! 😁
@@Smeedia Awesome! One more question? I drive a 2016 WRX. My tuner recommended a ETS FMIC, will that cause any lag/throttle repose issues compare to a TMIC?
@@antoniocarrion340i7 Not as much as you would think, the WRX uses a lot shorter piping compared to the STI. My STI is still on stock turbo with an ETS FMIC and the lag is very minimal. You shouldn't have any issues with lag. The decreased IAT temps you will see will benefit the car enormously.
Video is solid help us learn something
Appreciate the feedback 🙌😁
Could you keep the engine from running rich by adding dual exhaust and cold air intake??
This gave me ptsd from last night...got a flex tube to run from recirc bov to inlet and it came too long so I made a middle connection after cutting and it was too tight and rubbed on my coolant line...sliced it...so had to pinch and cut the hose, reattach and then had me thinking to just plug the inlet lol will say, perrins bov is so huge if you're running fmic and have Aos lines running through the middle, it doesn't leave much room.....add this to trying to figure at baro p2227 code after dropping a new iag block in, starting the car sitting at 3psi idle and sweating bullets trying to find a leak in idle when I'm supposed to be breaking the motor in. Taking it too a shop down the street to find the leak though.....have literally reattached everything 3 times over and it is still there. New map sensor on the way just in case it is crapped out too...starting to regret upgrading all the stuff I did while waiting on the block that I did...blouch 2.5 pickle, grimm downpipe, perring equal length, walbro 450 but running stock fpr, gymkhana exhaust just because why not, perrin cai, cobb 1050x injectors...so pretty much too many factors
If I were to get a hybrid on my new wrx. Would it require a tune?
You crack me up brah. Subie is looking hell fire hot. ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️💯💯💯💯✔️
My 2006 Forester XT has the stock BPV but it produces a loud enough 'Psh sh sh sh sh sh' to make people out walking turn around, I think parts of the intake have been removed by a previous owner and it has a cold air filter inside the front of the wheel arch.
That will definitely do it 🔥🙌
Yes :D
Thankyou!
Hi Mr Smeedia. I’ve been following your set up to build my car. I have stage 2 tuned about 2 month ago. Now i try to buy cobb sf bpv same exact one like you have, but it does not make any sound of it. I know old version u can adjust the spring rate. Is yours make any noise or the new version come like that?
Mine does not make any noise, I prefer not having the BOV sound but the intake noise should satisfy the need or want for the sound. Also appreciate the support my friend!
Thank you Smeedia. You the best
what about the hks blow off valve with the recirculation kit?
Do you ever drop stuff that you toss around in the air? Lol
Great segment I learned something new.
All the time 😅 I'd say 30% of thr time it hits the ground 😅
Would you recommend getting a hybrid while on a stock setup? I wanna hear the fun whoosh noises but don’t wanna compromise the reliability
Of you get hybrid just set it to 60/40 and you should be fine 🙏
Smeedia I appreciate you
@jason87023 did you get the hybrid bov? If so did anything negative happen to the stock motor?
Can you get the woosh noise with out voiding your warranty ?
Finally someone that explained it correctly or good enough for my slow self lol
What happens with bpv if you got a build in antilag ?
Do you know much about the turbo XS or other hybrid blow off valves? Do you recommend a BPV or hybrid? I was was thinking the hybrid until watching this video now just curious of the advantages and disadvantages in each compared to each other.
I would suggest the full recirc BPV, and Turbo XS makes awesome components 🔥😁
Awesome advice and really appreciate the quick response 🙌🏼 time to find a good Memorial Day sale. I’m not too familiar with turbo XS but bought a top mount TMIC from them and have been loving it!
One more question if you don’t mind and that is wether manual or automatic electronic boost controllers are better?
I would suggest electronic, no one can mess with them and the tuners have an easier time using them
Wont a tune fix the rich fueling if running a bov all to atmosphere?
I'm wondering if you (or any watchers with info) have any opinions on the boomba bpv? I hear that the "flutter" you hear from the boomba is compressor surge. If that's the case then some people say compressor surge is bad for your turbo and I heard another person say that compressor surge isn't really bad for your turbo if its a ball bearing turbo and it really is only harmful if you have a turbo with bushings. I am stock fa20 except for a catback exhaust, so no intake or anything else that would require a tune. Planning a perrin aos for my next mod and have been considering the boomba bpv after that but I'm wondering if the boomba might damage the engine and also if I will hear the flutter noise being stock intake. Any info or opinons would be helpful.
to much turbo surge will destroy the bearings in the turbo not to mention, but all that charged air going back into the block.. yikes no bueno.. Now the BPV is good for a stock engine with a stock ECU mapping etc.. but when you start adding mods to the car, and increase the boost thats when you run into issues with a BPV.. The best way to go is a 50/50 hybrid with the proper adjustment. You effectively talk half of the charged air and vent it and the other half gets recirculated so the ECU doesnt give you rich/lean issues and that increased boost pressure is not 100% going back into your block.. You get the nice PSHHHH! sound that turns heads and your not recirculating 20+ lbs of boost back through your turbo and into your block
Whats your take on GFB Mach 2 BOV ? Car came with it im stage 2 wondering to keep it or go boomba bpv or even stock bpv any input be much appreciated. Im stage 2 upgraded intercooler, upgraded charge pipe etc
Every GFB BOv I've seen always leaks, I wouldn't advise using one. An OE or aftermarket BPV would be my suggestion. 🙏
@@Smeedia thanks always appreciate your input brotha ✊
I didnt know you could be tuned off of MAF and have a front mount intercooler.
quick question i have a mostly stock wrx with some sti parts in it, i’m running with the stock bpv but before i really wanted a bov but still running maf so that’s a no, but i really want the perrin bpv which is also considered a bov is it okay to run? because you could tune it to be mostly a bpv just want your opinion on it
also (as far as i know) i am running a aftermarket tune but idk if that will effect whether i get a bov or bpv
What software is the car tuned on? Personally I would suggest the Cobb XLE
@@Smeedia i don’t know the hardware, i was probably gonna go with the cobb but isn’t a recirculating valve kinda like a bpv?
@@Smeedia btw i don’t plan on doing a bov
yooo! Quick question.. I have a 2020 Sti and its brand new.. should i wait to put my bpv on, til I do my intake? I have the cobb intake and airbox but aren't doing those til about 1-2k miles.. so the engine is broken in.. or what would you recommend
I'd just wait till you have everything and do it all at once
@@Smeedia thx man!
2019 wrx going from the stock bpv to a cobb LF bpv full recirculation does that require a tune?
No sir, full recirc your good 😁
Hi. I’ve hybrid bov but I think might be leaking. Should I swap it with factory bpv? I’m currently running bigger than stock turbo and tuned to 19psi. Speedy but nice and clear video . Thanks
I would just do a smoke test to start with and see where it is leaking from and if you can repair it. If not the Factory BPV will be more than sufficient for 19 PSI. 😁
@@Smeedia bro, thank you for the reply my car tuned with the hybrid bov. Is it okay to run the stock bpv in? My current set up is 20 vta/80 rec. Thanks again
@@jerryallright77 in all honesty if your already tuned with it on I wouldn't worry about it. If it was leaking when the car was tuned then your ECU is already accounting for the air that is lost. Next time you get retuned I would fix the leak or swap it out.
i did the ricer thing and cut out a closed seal to block the air from going into a bpv and surges the air into the turbo. now i didn't do this right away did some research and said what the heck i get cool turbo flutter on my 2011 wrx sedan and backfire when clutch is pressed after i reach boost
Shouldent be too harmful on the turbo, your not running big boost. Hows the car run? Are you tuned or still on a OEM or OTS tune?
@@Smeedia its on a stage 1 only engine mod is cobb intake , been running with the mod for a few months now , no issues turbo spools fine and the flutter causes the engine to backfire 1 to 3 pops in low boost when i ran a actual bov the engine stalled and was backfireing like a old classic car would, she was not happy so i put the stock bpv and then closed it with a allumium gasket cut to shape
I went to go test drive a 2017 WRX and it had the cool whoosh sound but I didn’t really get see if it had a BOV. Is there a way I can get the sound without compromising the reliability of the FA motor.
If you wanna retain the BOV I would just get a proper turn for it and it will minimize the issued 🙏
Thank you for this! I got an aftermarket BPV and was wondering why I couldn’t hear the pssshhh. Getting a CAI now! Thanks.
Once you install the cai the bov sounds will be more noticeable.... Try a 50/50 bov!!!!
She said she got an aftermarket BPV. Not a BOV. But a cai will still produce some whoosh.
Thanks everyone!!
