- In my review and retrospective of the 1991 cult so-bad-it's-good classic 'Samurai Cop', I delve deep behind the scenes of one of the best worst movies of all time. Starring Matt Hannon, Mark Frazer and Robert Z'Dar. Directed by Amir Shervan.

For me this movie is not a failure,it's a masterpiece.
Have you watched it?
@@JonSmith-cx7gr Of course I did....Movie is after all funny...Then everything else....
I have not seen it but as far i i can judge it is the funniest movie in history
Glad to see someone with half a brain cell more than CZcams creators.
Bingo
Samurai Cop is not a failure, it's a gift...a black gift.
If the goal of a movie is to entertain, then Samurai Cop succeeded spectacularly.
I just lost my mind. I have heard of this film. My friend, Gerald Okamura, is in it. But when I recognized one of the interior locations as Grandmaster Eric Lee's home where I shot my first feature with both he and Gerald, I realized how small the martial arts world in movies really is.
I had the honor of seeing Samurai Cop
at the theater for Rifftrax Live.
It was a magical evening.
"You didn't bring that big chinned guy with you, did you?"
it was a magical day
Matt Hannon looks like he'd be a damn perfect Tarzan for a live action Tarzan movie.
Yeah
Failure? Are you kidding me? This is the good stuff.
Totally agree! While the original is a cult classic nanar masterpiece, the sequel is the real stinking failure...
By the bye, "nanar" is the French word for "so bad they're good films", just like the real and original Samurai Cop!
The two lead actors deserve some recognition for carrying this movies priceless hillarity. I forgot their names already, but someone should remember them.
Samurai Cop exists in a world were where a police officer can afford a California beach front property with a pool, and hospitals have a dental office/burn unit
“Hey wait a minute!” You forgot to mention my favorite part.
The hidden gem of the movie world! Every scene is a masterpiece! 👌🏼
I woke up at 3:30 a.m. this morning. I couldn't get back to sleep so I started looking around on Hulu, Netflix, and Prime. I stumbled upon the Riffrax Live takedown of "Samurai Cop" on Amazon Prime, and I laughed my head off for the next hour and a half. Then, I fell asleep and overslept, making me late for work. Totally worth it
As a person who enjoys the movie world...This movie is masterpiece !!!Good job man keep up!!!
Thank you!
If it wasn't for Rifftrax, I would never have heard of this movie. It's a masterpiece and everything wrong with a movie all rolled into one! Great job!
"Nobody ever suspects.....HAMPER MAN!"
You failed to mention Frazier's gift... his "black gift". Wow that scene!
I really need Samurai Cop in my life now ...
Amazing video (editing, research, commentary, etc) for one of my favorite movie of all time. You did great and you deserves way, wayyyy more views and subs!
Thank you very much! I definitely plan on doing more like this one.
Hey Layton, great documentary on Amir Shervan and Samurai Cop. I've seen all of Shervan's movies from his great run (1987-1992) between Hollywood Cop to Samurai Cop. He made some the crappiest great movies of that era.
jamaral81 Thanks for watching!
This movie is so talked about that at the end of the day the lack of production quality and worst acting possible has paid off to some of those involved.
This was very informative and entertaining! This deserves far more views that it has. Well done!
sign543 Thanks for watching!
Layton Eversaul - Thank YOU. I hope you do more reviews. These types of reviews are very popular. And you’re good at it. 👍🏼
Actually the Samauri Cop's house went into three different locations: a suburban neighborhood, a beach, and then a city block. No wonder the bad guys had such a hard time figuring out how to get to his house considering it's a portal to three different places.
Man, you really deserve more subscribers. Love your breakdowns!
Agree 100%. Videos are above all other channels for information about the movies.
Layton, this was freakin' fantastic. Excellent work here man.
Thanks, man! I appreciate the support.
Man, that's what i can call a complete research. Good job!
Hilarious adding Kubrick's the shining music in the middle to build up the re-shoots.
the best bad movies are by filmmakers with the best intentions to make a good film.
I first discovered this film on the big screen, when it was roasted by RiffTrax. They did an amazing job, and it still resonates.
I only heard of this film about a month ago and it's so bad that I love it. It reminds of the disaster movie "The Core" how that movie even got a cinema release still boggles my mind to this day. I got it cheap on DVD a few years later and gave it to my mum as she likes a good disaster movie and we watched it on holiday. You'd think we were watching a comedy by all the laughter that was coming from both of us. I recommend watching it.
The core was a damn decent movie
When translated into Persian, the dialogue makes perfect sense.
If they went back and redid every scene to make it more like an actual movie, I would never watch it again. The best possible version is the one that we currently have! I still watch it all the time!
It`s amazing, one of my favorite so-good-its-bad films, andI agree with other commenters that you should have more views!
Liked and subbed ;)
Extremely well made! Bravo sir
Stephen Hockley Thank you!
Failure?! Nope. Such movies are miracles, they rarely happen
When I saw this movie, I laughed so hard I peed my pants! One of the top ten Best Bad Movies!
people are too quick to put down amir. there's no idea, plot line, or gimmick that QT or Rodriguez have pulled that Shervan didn't do first.
I love the Captain scenes. Always make me laugh so hard. I would imagine that he's like the store owner and these guys are bugging the heck out of him and he's telling them all to leave.
Oh. Joy. I've been reminded that Neil Breen exists. Thank you for that.
The fact the dude making the video is NOT The bad guy from the original film sort of blew my mind. Honestly wasn't expecting it NOT to be him 😄
I can't say what my favorite scene is anymore because every time I watch it, it changes. But in the first 20 minutes, I love, "shoot em! You got em!" There's a scene near the end that's hard to catch because of the terrible sound quality, Fujiyama tells one of his mobster's to do something and he replies, "ok boss" in the dumbest theatrical evil man voice ever.
Great video, man. Just watched Samurai Cop and is mesmerising how bad-good it is. The way how they take all so serious is remarkable. All respect to the professionals who made this gem possible. You made the best making off I could wish for. Just make me want to watch it again. Thanks!
Thanks, Jean! Always happy to hear when people discover this film.
When I think about my own life, have I ever gone out and taken a chance to follow my dreams like this director? No - so I respect him for that! Although it is so laughable.
I kinda wish the director would have lived to see it blossom. Even under the circumstances he might have smiled.
25:09 that`s actually the german VHS Cover, not polish...
As teenagers, my cousins and I LOVED this movie
It seems like the director was trying to ripoff elements from multiple sources, like Lethal Weapon, Miami Vice, Cobra, and even Highlander to some degree. The whole "tough renegade cop who bends rules to get results" trope was popularized by movies like Dirty Harry and The French Connection in the 70's, and it continued to be popular well into the 80's and early 90's, which is basically why the protagonist in this movie talks and acts the way he does.
My brother had to get a master’s degree after that movie.
Matt is actually beyond awesome!
Awesome video. Thank you very much
mwont Thank you!
I had the pleasure of seeing Samurai Cop 2...IN A THEATER.
Black Sheep and Samurai Cop are my two favorite bad movies. I like to watch them when I feel really bad... always makes me smile :)
This guy worked for Stallone and Sly never gave him a role in something?
Makes you wonder...
Great analysis, it gave me a much more in depth look at the film.
A few things left out of the Rifftrax Live version, it seems...
I love your videos man.
Cinema Junkies Thanks for watching!
your very welcome. never a dull moment, exactly what I want from these videos.
I gotta be honest, as incompetent as the movie is Matt Hannon is pretty natural in his scenes, when he's trying, of course. The scene at 8:49 is an example, at least for me.
I actually enjoyed watching this movie
Great
@@lordcolinb Bingo
I'd like to learn more about Traxx.
I'm not the villain, it's not true its bullshit, I'm not villain I am naaht... Oh hi Samurai Cop
Your face like one of the actor villain with beard.
Unintended consequences result in some of the most universally recognized comedy.
Matt Hannon got involved in hiest & incarnated for brief time after doing samurai cop. Amir didn't kill his career.
After a bottle of red wine and a doobie, I watched (and laughed) my way through this cult classic last night.
Can anyone recommend anything similarly bad/good, with the exception of The Room - I just thought that was plain bad.
The next bad movie drug to take in my opinion is the ineptly glorious Miami Connection.
@@carlosx1237 I'll look into it. Cheers.
Space Mutiny, Yor the Hunter from the Future, The New Barbarians, 1990: Bronx Warriors, Mr. No Legs, Danger U.S.A.
@@donwhiteley3293 Cheers for the suggestions. I'll see if I can find them.
there is a trilogy of garbage masterpieces that i love and that includes this movie and Miami Connection and Troll 2
Samurai Cop vs Maniac Cop. The movie we never thought we wanted yet after its discovery, we find we can't live without it.
Keep smashing it Mr. Eversaul. Need to tell people to start subscribing or we'll have to shoot......shoot them.
When watching this for the first time today after seeing multiple reviews like this on the movie I was actually trying to rationalize the shit out of everything that happened. Like how you and others will say Shervan forgot to cut the scene where the police chief gets mad at Frank for kissing him. I think the scene kept going cus they want to show the police chief is actually pretty soft when officers aren't around. So I think he waited in the pointing pose until Joe and Frank were completely out of sight and then sat back down and laughed about the situation.
Well it's interesting because Jay of RLM has even commented on how incompetent Amir's movies have been if you compare his earliest work(Hollywood Cop) compared to his last movie(Samurai Cop). Usually filmmakers get better the more movies they create.
Good film- love its authenticity
3:44 Main Character and The Dragon are in near exact place only camera is bit sideways
Samurai cop is awesome
I was screaming at the screen the whole time. It was a blast.
This is great. You get my sub now, but if you do Star Crash and Miami Connection, you'll get my soul too.
Manic Mike On the list!
@@LaytonEversaul YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!
this is gold, for $50k, no joke.
today, for $50k we get shit trap videos.
What was that black thing at the start of the video that he put into a type of device I have never seen before?
The nurse’s lines, albeit still bad dialog, would have have made more since if they had been given to the love interests, Jennifer.
Easily the best ‘it’s so bad it’s good”, movie in my list..I think it’s even better than The Room.
I was also wondering why and how Samurai Cop was able to have such a excellent visual quality at 1080p, and you certainly answered my question!
So, in your opinion, is it better than "The Room" or worse, and is being worse better or is being better worse? Also, where does "Birdemic" fall in the hierarchy of crap movies?
To be clear, #Samurai Cop is easily my number 1 favorite bad movie of all time that I have no problem spending my time to re-watch. The police escalation tactics are incredibly inaccurate ("We'll call for back up when we need it!" sums it up after killing a guy then running over him while being involved in a high speed chase and shootout), that opening chase scene altogether, the ongoing tone def with the relevancy of whats happening in each scene throughout the entire movie, the technical problems (like not having budget for proper sound recording), the pointless fast cut edits, re-shots, random bad guys emerging from roofs with guns, bad guys re-using that same shotgun and other weapons, awkward screen compositions, the wig, the "I'm telling these sons of bitches..." exposition..., Cameron having become my favorite female henchmen, I love every scene. And Dave Matthews named his song 'Samurai Cop' after the movie simply because he was watching the movie while writing the lyrics. Blows "The Room" to down to number 2, which also is a very good bad movie worth watching at least once a year. Need to watch Birdemic. To intentionally bad movies (like Sharknados or some of those non-Netflix straight to Netflix movies) into perspective, I don't waste my time on those...I feel myself getting dumber by watching something like that.
@@mattb9664 The car chase was hilarious, especially the hit-and-run. I am now going to have to re-watch the movie.
Just Me one of my favorite details is how many times the wheels and tires of the Caprice change throughout the cuts and shots (not to mention the van's front lower spoiler appearing and disappearing), and just the general condition of that car. I give a pass or ok on most movies where there are minor linearity problems (like the yellow Porsche in Commando)..it just makes Samurai Cop even better!
I'm only a movie enthusiast, not a film maker or anything. This would be my side job if I had time.
@@mattb9664 I will have to rewatch it. I tried to get my wife to watch it with me last night, but after 10 minutes she proclaimed, "Sorry, this just isn't very funny." Sometimes she has zero sense of humor. She laughed at the wig, but that was about it. She found the hit-and-run scene more shocking than amusing. So sad.
It's a Rifftrax masterpiece! 😂👍
One of my all time favorite movies
What does failure mean anyway?
It means Japanese masterpiece
A film by Michael Scott Productions.
At first I thought you was that Jaw guy
An Unintentional *Masterpiece*
.
You gotta review the all time greatest B movie. "Hard ticket to Hawaii". It makes Samarai Cop look Oscar worthy. Lol
Speaks fluent Japanese
Proceeds to say "Omaha or Yamaha what ever his name is" lmao!!!
14:06
Holy shit who’s she
I know that there are a lot of guys going on extended pause at this point. Wow!
Dude, you can cut the tension in that scene with a Japanese sword!
This movie is so hilarious, to me it's a spin off of The Naked Gun movies starring Leslie Nielsen.
Love it. Gotta see samurai cop 2
This was better than the movie.. sincerely in case that doesn't come across as the compliment I *pregnant pause*.. was going for lol.🤪
The "edits" in this are fantastic! Lol
The difference between Samurai Cop and other bad movies is that the actors actually cared about making a good movie. The directing was the problem.
I loved this movie so much.
Wow. Using the cars of cast and crew! 😮😅
Being a fan of "so bad it's good movies", I was really entertained by Samurai Cop. I watched Neil Breen's Fateful Findings thr other day and found it absolutely boring, not really enjoying all the bad movie tropes as with this movie
"Who i'm assuming is adopted" 😂😂😂 "
...and what would you know about “failure” that you are giving a lesson on it?
To be honest I came across this video a bunch of times and because of its title I never watched it. It's got a click bait title and in all honesty, as a samurai cop fan it's really worth watching. But the title for it does no justice and should be changed. I'm a big fan of the movies Amir Shervan's made in the States.
Damn this is underrated
8:05 i read that is not Fuj fujiyama. Matt hannon deliberately said that Fuji..(pause) Fujiyama as AN error to try if director would do take 2 of this scene. Well director didnt So this error exists
I have to say, Samurai Cop is the kind of fuckedup film that miraculously works for me. The pure example of "so bad its really good"
Fail my ass . This movie is a hidden treasure. I strongly suggest a reboot with the same actors. Whos with me?
Samurai cop 2 is released
