Kurt, I'm a professional actor with more than 40 years experience, including work as a series regular in a sitcom for 3 years. I've also been an acting teacher for more than 4 decades. So, I watch videos like yours with a critical eye. Bravo, Mr. Yue! This is a valuable no-nonsense video that is spot on. Love the clarity. I'm no stranger to Sandy Meisner, and this video taught me things I did not know. Keep inspiring actors. Keep working. Maybe we will front off as villains in a movie one day. By the way, the cat has definitely studied Meisner.

Is it like more advanced ? What’s she’s describing seems more advanced. I only did one month of acting classes so far, 4 classes. But I’m nervous when she’s describing having to fully be devastated quick like for the home alone 😳may be a dumb question but, do u create the lines or they give it to you in that situation for the home alone part?
@@HannahTran1 The "words" that you speak come from the repetition usually (until you get into the advanced class and start working from a script) but when you're doing an "alone" it's just you on the stage; you're alone, there are no words. They call it "home alone" but where I train we just call it an "alone" and it is a more advanced exercise, like you said so don't worry. By the time you get to that level you will be fully prepared for it. I'm not sure how other schools do it but where I train you don't even do an alone until you've been in the program about a year (of a two year program).
BTW, you're USUALLY alone during an "alone" but for my second or third alone my teacher had someone come to the door and just be with me. I'm not sure what she had as her "door" but it was interesting that the teacher selected someone that I already have an INCREDIBLE on stage chemistry with and it was an amazing experience. It was amazing that the teacher just happened to select someone that I already work very well with and love like a sister and I didn't even know she was going to be coming to the door. Sometimes your teachers can throw you a curve ball that you never expected. You just stay in the moment; working from moment to moment. Don't anticipate what's going to happen next, just stay fully present; IN the moment... IN the scene.
Before you can do an "alone" you have to learn basic repetition then learn "Doors and Activities" which is supported by the repetition exercise. Also you have to do the "emotional preparation" class before you can graduate to intermediate and do your first "alone". Where I train the "emotional preparation" class is taught by Wolfgang Bodison who is most well known for his role as Lance Cpl. Harold W. Dawson in the movie "A Few Good Men" but he's constantly working. I think he has three different movies in preproduction right now.
All of the above SUPPORTS script but you must first learn to live truthfully under the given imaginary circumstance before you even begin working with dialogue and a script. Usually takes about a year before they even hand you a scene with dialogue. Other schools might be different but this is how we do it where I train.
@@HannahTran1 hi Hannah! What she is describing in this video is more advanced, yes. I started Meisner from nothing in March and did all the techniques she described in the previous interview with Kurt. It took me 4 months to master repetition, point of view, then activity/hover. About one class a week then did her small group class which you get more attention. For home alone, there's no script still. You are still working off your partner.
Keep in mind progress through the Meisner is different for everyone. You may breeze through certain concepts faster then get stuck on something. That's OK. Just focus on yourself (don't ever compare yourself with anyone else in class) and learn. I tend to get competitive with myself to learn something quickly, but it's so much more important to enjoy the process of it and don't ruin it for yourself. Best of luck!

@@gridrick5203 it's recommended to be over 18. There are youth classes for those under 18.

I think it's a brilliant idea to bring cameras into a Meisner class. I remember being blown away by the performance during my first BEGINNER class at PW; looking around and thinking to myself "Where the hell are the cameras!? This is amazing!!! Why aren't we capturing this!!". Then I realized, this is an everyday thing at PW. The trick... is to catch it on camera. Even the beginner repetition exercises can be life changing. Have you ever tried doing reps for two hours, non-stop, no breaks?
It's almost like a spiritual experience and I mean just the basic repetition (changing pronounces with POV etc but no independent activity - for TWO hours). My mind got real quiet and I felt like we were communicating telepathically after about an hour and a half. And if a director can capture THAT experience.... that's the REAL "magic" of Hollywood.

I think it would be great if you could do a video showing the progression of the Meisner work, starting from basic mechanical repetition to "changing pronouns"; then show a demonstration of a real Independent Activity (explaining what the main components of a well structured activity are); then a demonstration of "Doors" - maybe including the three knocks game & three questions game; then emotional preparation; then show a demonstration of an "Alone" (etc; I know I'm leaving a lot out) and ending with a demonstration of the final product of the work, maybe even producing a one act play for your channel. That would be bad ass. You probably don't have time for all of that because I know you're a busy; working actor.
Yeah, that would be a lot to do for my YT channel. Jessica actually does this as an introductory workshop through here school. I've co hosted that workshop before on Zoom. It's about 90 minutes long.

How to solve visa problems if a foreigner wants to work in America
DON'T get an entertainment Visa because then you can ONLY work in entertainment. You need to get a regular job to support an acting career because as a new actor you're not going to be able to pay the rent from acting jobs alone, unless you're already famous and getting booked constantly.
@@liquidbraino is there a visa that allows someone to work any type of job? Or is green card the only option?
@@ActingCareerCenter try researching on J-2 visa as I can recall... Visa holders can work as long as they as EAD card. There’s also H1-B visa for fashion model.
@@ActingCareerCenter I'm not 100% certain but I have a few actor friends that are from different countries and when they come here with an entertainment visa they usually end up having to go back home. I'm not an expert on the subject but I've seen a few actors have problems with their entertainment visa because they can only work entertainment jobs. I think it might be better to get a student visa because then you can work any kind of job as long as your in school (hopefully an acting school).

I have a question I’m 12 years old and want to start acting I’m about to start taking online classes for acting if I enjoy it do I just do as much as I can where I live but I live in Ohio so not a lot of options what to do. So what do I do
Many great ways to get started in Ohio. Jessica's school is based in Ohio. If you are taking her online classes, she can definitely help you out. She helped me a ton when I first started in Ohio.
Hey kurt I just wanted to ask when you sign up for a acting class will you’re acting class out you with beginner actors or more advanced because I just thought you have to be with the beginners because if you are out with people who are not beginners they are gonna be half way the course and you don’t even know the basics so will you be out with other beginners
It really depends on the class. Some classes separate the actors and some classes like to keep them mixed. For beginners, it can be very useful to be in a class with advanced actors because you can learn a lot from watching them and working with them.

Where I train we have a beginner; intermediate and an advanced class. It's broken up into three different groups but there are more than three steps in any Meisner training program and everyone progresses at their own pace. On your first day all you're doing is basic mechanical repetition then later you'll learn "changing pronouns" (probably same day) then later you learn "Independent Activities"; somewhere along the way you learn the "three moments game" and the "three knocks game" then you learn "Doors" and a lot of what I've listed above is just the beginner class - they can't teach you all of that at once, it's a very progressive; step by step learning process in which one step leads to the next. If they had to have a separate class for every step of the program that would require too many different classes. Every step of the work supports the next step of the work, like stacking stones in order to build a sturdy wall. You can't stack the keystone first; the entire structure would fall apart. Gotta start from the corner stone and work your way up and the cornerstone is the repetition exercise.
BTW, I'm only speaking from my own experiences with my own teachers. Every teacher is a little different; even if they're teaching at the same school. The way we do "Independent Activities" requires five different elements 1. Physical Difficulty 2. Meaningful reason for doing it 3. Time constraint 4. Consequences for NOT getting it done and 5. a very clear standard of completion - so you know when the activity is complete. But you don't START with all of those elements. You begin ONLY with the level of physical difficulty and once you've mastered that, you add a meaningful reason for doing it. Once you've mastered that, you add a time constraint (etc). The way I like to explain it is that it's a process of building one habit on top of another, you can't pick up all of these habits at once so you FIRST work on the habit of REALLY listening and placing 100% of your attention on the other person. It's like you're stacking one habit on top of the other. You have to learn to crawl before you can learn to walk; walk before you can learn to run. Google "Neuroplasticity" or "Self Directed Neuroplasticity" if you want a deeper; more scientific understanding of how habits are formed in the brain. The two key factors are focus.... and repetition. Sandy was a genius.

Being an actor isn't about having emotions or getting emotional - it's about living truthfully under the given imaginary circumstances. If you're faking it - then you're a method actor (not Meisner).
