- Please join me as I metal detect an old farm property and search for coins, relics, bottles and whatever other types of treasure that may be underfoot. I concentrate on excavating a test hole in what appears to be a very old trash midden and then metal detecting the excavated dirt. In the video I give out tips and tricks on what to look for and how to excavate these sometimes VERY productive old home trash pits and mounds.

Beau, have you ever tried using your heavy magnet to pull nails out of the loose dirt pile?
That's what we often have to do around the homestead! I really would love to put a few strong magnets on one of those really old "lawnmowers" that is really just a rotating metal cylinder and see how many nails, screws, and other things we'd pick up! We used to make the younger kids to carry around a pole with a magnet somehow attached to it and have them go over the driveway and around the house where our cars and tractor parked, again and again, but then they got lucky because my parents started paying them per piece of metal collected because we were getting too many flat tires! 😂
I think that is the top of a filled in well. That bottle you popped out is 1880s or even may go back to the late 70s

We dug up a yard once to fix a brokem tile..
The house and basement was 25 years old. The clay from the basement was originaly spread on the front. There was 6 inches of black dirt on top just from mowing the yard for 25 years..
Top soil out on the prairie is 7 feet deep some places.
A screeners dream, quite the honey hole !
I was at Three Springs last Friday scratching at an area and think it may show some of the same stuff . Next Monday I get my cast off a going back and check it out again. I hope you find something some older artifacts,good luck !

Beau based on what was in the hole, it looks to me you mind have found the remains of an old colonial outdoor kitchen! too many nails and brick in the hole by accident, and everything else looks like it pertains to eating! Bob in Germany

You should go back there with a strainer and give the ground you got up a swish to see exactly what's in there. Old archaeology trick, sieve the dirt to make up a picture, sometimes works better than actually digging a site that might've been uprooted or looted, or be unnatural to its form by other means.

You need one of them flower pot shovels I call them Chigg that people dig in flower beds with. Be careful that jaw bones getting close now
Gotta wonder how many people see Beau's truck in a parking lot and think its a homeless persons car.
At work one day one of my coworkers gave me a garbage bag full of cloths that no longer fit them. I threw it into the back seat of me car and after working a night shift drove home. It is an hour commute and I knew I wasn’t going to make it that day so I pulled over in a boat landing beside the highway and took a nap. Got awoken by a cop smashing on me window. Yelling and screaming at me for 10 mins! 😳 He saw the garbage bag with cloths in it and me sleeping in the driver seat covered up with a sleeping bag. He thought exactly that: I’m a homeless person. Nasty man. I have never been able to take a nap when I’m tired driving since then.
As an add on....one of my workers just before that got off work from a night shift and drove home. He didn’t make it. Fell asleep and didn’t make a corner. Sadly he hit and killed an 18 year old girl on her way to school. He was devastated! He usually is the one helping on motor vehicle accidents. That day he took a life. He was charged and convicted of vehicular manslaughter. So sad all around.
