      problem is the factories must make a big vat of filler, that vat will have the right percentages, but when it comes to some tube pouring a specific amount of weight into the pie they dont seem to be able to make sure theres the right amount of meat in there. so some people get mostly gravy, some will get more meat.
      I always seems to be the one who gets the more gravy, so i gave up buying pies.

      First,excellent review- good to know about it.
      Trusting the content by percentage,hmmm 🤔
      They are governed by laws and legislation but is this to be trusted?after all, use mass production machinery to make these things. Dubious- yes . On the fence - yes trust- not entirely

      It's how it's worded, they manipulate the description to make it sound good, when actually it's not at all.
      The Australian standard for pie filling is it must contain no less than 25% meat. Yeah but what part of the meat?
      Some of the cheapies are much better in their meat filling consistency than the more expensive pies.
      Independent bakeries make much better pies overall than commercial bakeries do as far as meat quantity, quality and flavour goes..

  • @thebigman170

    That is shocking. We bought a steak pie and it was just mainly Gravy. Very disappointing. We only go to the Butcher's down the road for Pies now as they are full to the brim with Meat.

  • @Finglesham
    @Finglesham Před 7 měsíci +22

    Well, flour is still cheap as compared to the meat. So flour is gradually bulking the pies out. Soon to be called a pastry pie with a hint of meat flavour. The Eco types will love it.

    • @ge2719
      @ge2719 Před 7 měsíci +4

      then eventually the flour will be replaced with as much "cricketmeal" as they can get away with.

    Chicken and bacon pie is so easy to make, it should be impossible to mess up, i make my own i use 2 or 3 chicken breast depending on there size, i put them in tinfoil wrapped in bacon and season the breasts with salt and pepper and put it in the oven till cooked normally around 1 hour at 180c, then i cut up the chicken and bacon then i make the white sauce via a couple of packs of Colemans white sauce mix and milk and pour into a sauce pot/pan then i pile the chicken, bacon and white sauce into a steak pie ashet and a pie flute and leave to cool then i put a puff pastry lid on and i egg wash the puff pastry and cook in the oven at 200c for 25 to 30 minutes and then 160c for another 20 minutes to ensure the chicken and the sauce are hot ... it's so easy and it tastes amazing my pies are like 60 to 70% chicken and bacon

      I think instead of relying on supermarkets which are basically designed to extract the maximum amount of money out of consumers, in return for the minimum amount of poorest quality food they can get away with, we need to form purchasing groups & commission the pies we want, to agreed recipes, direct from butchers & bakeries.

    Is it just me, or has anybody else noticed that it is now a real struggle to get an ordinary chicken and mushroom pie, or cheese and onion pie for example in the mainstream supermarkets etc? They are now called 'Slice'.
    Is it because the public rather a 'slice' instead of a 'pie' or is it because a slice looks about the same size but holds much less filling?
    Just saying.

      From a proper bakery where they bake their own stuff in the shop - or, at least their own bakery, albeit in a remote location, it usually has decent portions of steak or chicken or whatever it’s meant to contain - most of the stuff bought in supermarkets is often little more than soup in pastry!

I wonder why the three of us siblings were skinny little buggers ? Even mow after all those years i love a meat pie sandwich, thats what one gets when dragged up in a pit village. I suppose ? 🤣😂👍

    Did you watch Dispatches on Channel 4, the great food swap? These pies and sauces are being filled with modified starch. The chicken and expensive ingredients are being swapped for cheaper subsitutes.

      @@BaldFoodieGuy You want to get to see it. All about sustituting cheap ingredients for more expensive. They all doing it. Modified starch is the bad one.

    Pastry is the cheap ingredient here, especially when they use the cheapest of fats to make it. This means, with the amount of meat, this is a rip-off. I bet there is a massive markup on these (as with most things at the moment).

    We have dug our electric pie maker back out , less unsavoury additives. I only like butchers type pork, chicken and cranberry pies , like they make pork pies . You can eat them cold for buffets .

    Buy some pre made pie cases and pre made puff pastry for lid. Fill up with loads of chicken and bacon 🥓… lovely and far better quality

    There really should be more enforcement by trading standards over this kind of misleading packaging. That was pretty disappointing after what was depicted on the box.

    I missed the price but I find stuff like this is handy to throw in the freezer for when you can't be arsed to cook, never gonna blow you away like.

    It seems you get more pastry than fillings in pies now a days the best pies are the pies from mud pies which are worth the money and they are very tasty try them you won't be disappointed

    Many times I've purchased tinned meals that state 12% meat, only to find 3 pieces the size of a marble inside. I think it's standard practice to overstate meat content. But I never buy that product again, so they lose a customer. Silly really.

    Aldi do a chicken pie which looks similar to that. Can you do a review of that also so we can see the difference with Morrisons. Also Aldi do a nice looking Oakhurst Beef Bourguignon which I would like you to review please if possible.

    I think this all part of the Shrinkflation trend !! I recently bought some Birds eye chicken kievs ( 4) and i couldnt believe how thin they were !! More like a chicken burger with a tiny dribble of butter inside !!

    Lol Gareth. I suggested maybe to dissect one half, and just eat as is the other? Maybe mash the whole is the future? (I think not..) . Do as you do, I'll likely watch anyway..
