All I do (fresh or frozen pies) is to just pull and tease the top edge of the foil away from the pie pastry until it comes free, then pop it in the oven. I also got fed up of taking it out when cooked and leaving half in the foil base 🙂
Well I would have thought common sense would say its cheaper for transport and import taxes, all the checks food stuff has to pass. The government , the supermarkets and of course us should be supporting home grown and hopefully that makes it a bit cheaper. It is nice that ALDI does but also gives us a glimpse into some of the better foreign foods :).
They look lush. I always cook this type of pie top down for around 5 - 10 minutes to firm up the base, then put it back in the foil tray for the rest of the cooking time. This also helps the lid cook at the same time as the pie without getting too burnt. All you need now is some buttery mash x
Yes but you have to be careful , some of their things are superb , class leading , some not so much so be prepared for trial and error , but that applies to everything one buys .
Steak & Ale used to be a restaurant chain here in the US. I used to eat at their location in Lakeland Florida from time to time. Their trademark is still owned and managed by a food company. When I saw the title it made me a bit nostalgic, but it looks like the logo is different on the packaging you showed. The pie looks really good. Update: I read up that Steak & Ale pies are a classic British pub dish which I didn't know till now being an American. You learn something new everyday.
Pie looks decent for the price. I've got an air fryer oven, and find with pies, especially frozen, I have to turn down the temperature to 160, and also knock 10 mins off the cooking time, otherwise the top always burns. Love a sausage roll, and yours looked the biz 👍.
i've just bought steak and ale pies from Asda and they're fantastic. Box of 4 pies for £2.65 or 2 boxes for £4.50 so I bought 2 boxes. What a discovery.
Nah. They’re stake and gravy. And diddy little ones. Unless they’ve brought out a steak and ale but not when I look. The equivalent ones in Asda are in the same section. 2 pack like Aldi but so much more money. £3.30 I think. And these are £1.99. Same thing.
@@bmunckton just had a look at the box and yes you're right, they're steak and gravy but really deep filled and lovely. 600 grams, 4x 150g. Really good value for £2.25
Another excellent review. I like the way you were able to ‘think on your feet’ and prevent the top of the pie crust from burning using your improvised cover. One of those pies would taste even better when accompanied by chunky chips and a serving of garden/mushy peas. 😋
They've just opened an Aldi near me, there's a Tesco the same distance from my house which I've not seen the inside of since Aldi opened. Aldi quality has improved, they do a chicken, leek and ham pie in the same range, very tasty too.
I’d love to sit down at a table with you, and tuck in. Your enthusiasm would add so much to the meal. When ever I watch your videos, I always end up starving!😂😂😂
Bit of a shame the top came away but it was a blessing in disguise, actually had a good look on inside of the pie. The pie looked delicious and for that price you can't go wrong. Thanks for another great review Gareth x
The filling looks very decent . If I buy them I will tap them out of their foil tray while frozen and just rub a bite of butter around the bottom of the pies then they may not stick .
Gareth, when you have frozen pies, pop them out the foil gently, then place back in gently, so to break the seal from the foil/pie, and then when cooked, they come away easy. Great vid by the way, love watching real home style food vids 🙂
I often put a sheet of foil over pies and sausage rolls, because some do tend to getting burnt. Remove the foil 5 minutes before the end. If you want ideas for simple starter cooking, why not get some ready-made pizza bases and put your own toppings on. Cheese, strained chopped tomatoes or passata, ham, salami, whatever.
Have to give this one a go, much better price than asda steak and ale pies which are £3.30 atm. These look like a good upgrade from our regular ASDA 4 Steak & Gravy Pies 4x150g at £2.65, alittle more money but bigger pies with more beef more than offset that. Only downside is making more ale gravy for the chips and peas, have to take care not to cook out that ale flavour and aroma. TTFN off to aldi to see if they have them instock, missus wants to try them so i have my marching orders. Thanks for the review, take care, God bless one and all.
Thanks for the review I’m definitely going to try the pie’s… please do some more cooking I couldn’t breathe this morning watching your video 😂 mascara was streaming down my face 😂
You will never eat chunky chips ever again once you have eaten the pre-cut frozen slim-chips deep-fried and served in Turkish Kebab shops; they're thicker than Fries but thinner than chunky chips.
that was a great review gareth, those cheap Aldi pie will be impossible to get now, they will be sold out as soon as they hit the freezers, I just wish you wouldnt say "slippage juice" it makes me feel sick - say something like gravy instead
Don't need to wait for the comments, your expression says it all. Gareth, you're becoming a soul food icon for those of us who like the real comfort stuff.
I’ve noticed when on self catering holidays where there are a lot of Germans, they have Lidl products I.e. cereals, 😂butter and jam at breakfast, they only make toast and they’re sorted. Like most of us tourists we eat out at night as do the rest of the tourists.
Gareth, I finally found the plates in Asda £3 each plate £3 pasta bowl £25 for 12 piece set I can now be served runny gravy / stew without landing in my lap, lol Keep up the good reviews. Regards Paul

hi, showing us the Aldi stuff is ok but finding a store that sells it is a different matter, in the Welshpool Aldi they do their best to stock as little as possible and when I asked about the large frozen lamb bakes they had no idea what I was talking about.
The best pie I've had,so far is a liddell, "old peculiar steak pie"! But the aldi looked pretty good too! I can't ever refuse a pie,my favourite. The puff pastry makes it lovely.
Looks really great. What I've found usually with these kind of pies is they have soggy bottoms ! I bought a pack of 4 from Asda - the filling was great but the pastry uneatable x

Well the sausage rolls, if your not used to making them frequently you will make a mess of them, though that's the same with anything, exigence = skills. I'd eat em.
Great review 👍 I've noticed when I used that make of brush that they are great for egg wash but tend to be ott with the milk so I dip my finger in the milk and smooth it over the pastry that way. Yes Gaz do more cooking and baking IMO you're natural ❤
Why don't you try Mayflower Chinese beef curry from Poundland? £2!! I thought for that price it was good. Give it a go you will be surprised how much beef there's in it.👍😋
Good vid Gazz ..... the reason for the burning on the top the milk has pooled on the top mate i bake a lot .... i would have put that pie on a barm cake lol
I'm new? Probably same as usual. Best qualities during launch, then not so good when they have the market used to them. Can't get decent pies from any supermarket chain.
Little tip. Grease the inside of the foil tray, preferably with lard or butter. I always do with these frozen pies, never sticks.
Great tip!
All I do (fresh or frozen pies) is to just pull and tease the top edge of the foil away from the pie pastry until it comes free, then pop it in the oven.
I also got fed up of taking it out when cooked and leaving half in the foil base 🙂
Release from foil before cooking and turn them for ten minutes to avoid a soggy arse.
One good thing about the German supermarkets is that they are supporting our British farmers
If you look at owners of most of them..they aren't British

Chunky chips?; the most tastiest chips are those served in Turkish Kebab shops; they are thicker than Fries but thinner than traditional-cut chips.

Went to Tesco the other day, there it was the "new" flash on the pack, it was a bag of Sprouts!!
Lol!
Well you wouldn't want second-hand ones?
The milk is to help brown the top, I would put it on a lower shelf so it doesn't burn before it starts to cook
Cheers for the tip
Once cooked turn the pie upside down on a plate, it may come out of the foil in one piece.looks good, might pick them up next Thursday (ALDI day).
Yep, I do this too.
Have you tried Aldi's "Salmon en Croute" in the freezer section, filled with different sauces Gareth? Amazing! Serves four. Seriously good.
