Love watching John's covers, as far as i know you're the first to post a reaction to one. His dissection of Rosetta Stoned should be required viewing for any serious drum student. Enjoy your trip down the Tool rabbit hole, Danny has a ton of surprises up his sleeve. Since you've heard the latest album, go back and check out the 10000 Days album next and work your way back. Thanks for posting!

  • @maciejs3126

You should definetely check out John's Rosetta Stoned cover and the follow-up "making of" video he made, explaining just how long and complex process it was to break this song down and learn to play it. Usually drum covers are not my cup of tea but John is the exception. In my opinion he doesn't have Danny's dynamics (being a 6,5 feet tall monster does it's work there ;) ) but still he delivers the closest experience possible to the original. BTW. You deserve a lot more subs than you have. Very good insights! A matter of time if you ask me.

      100% Agree!!!
I'm actually DYING from laughter!! I just came off from watching Mr. Zypher react to the God of Drumming himself on Pneuma, and I had a quick little inkling of a thought when he said, "Oh, I'm not a TOOL fan, I've never been a TOOL fan, etc. etc..." I thought, "I bet you you will be now!!"
Quick check on Zypher's video feed, I see another TOOL reaction, and barely a minute into this video and he says he hasn't stopped listening to Fear Inoculum!! HAHAHAAAHHAAHA!!!!
One word: YEP!! Can't really say I told you so, but I did THINK you so!!! LOL
Welcome to The Army!! For real though @ZypherDrums -- you NEED to start your journey down the rabbit hole at the beginning!! Give TOOL another try--you're already doing that, but honestly, go back to their previous masterpieces and start back there... You are proof in the pudding to me that I have yet to find someone who actually LISTENS to this incredible band and fully does not like them, even in your case where you have said that you weren't even partial to any of their previous works. You're actually actively giving them your full attention, and "[you[ haven't been able to stop listening to them!"
If you want an amazing iteration of Danny Carey, from one drummer to another, my good sir, I recommend Rosetta Stoned. JohnKew actually did a drum cover and MORE IMPORTANTLY a drom DECONSTRUCTION video about his learning process and about the insane intricacies inherent within Danny's drumming. Listen to the song first--to fully get the full effect, start with "Lipan Conjuring," then "Lost Keys (Blame Hofman)," and finally to "Rosetta Stoned."
Here's a link to the "10,000 Days" playlist on CZcams, that way you can go without interruption from one track to the next as they fade into each other:
      czcams.com/play/OLAK5uy_l7KrE4YuWhZsfCdXlLJERHyk4YlwydukA.html
Then check out the deconstruction vid that JohnKew put out--it's nothing short of AMAZING! Both what John (whose full name is John Williams BTW) did and the work he put into deciphering Danny's sublime drumming, from dynamics, to time signatures, to polyrhythms, etc., as well as fully being able to see the true genius behind Danny's drumming in fully stark, no-longer-foggy way. Here's that vid:
      czcams.com/video/5EtB4kXzNmE/video.html
Finally, now, after having amassed this wealth of knowledge and discovering some of the more particular nuances within the track, watch John's cover, and you'll pick up on so many little things that went right over your head upon your first listen... It's truly a mind-boggling experience man! Here's that vid: czcams.com/video/kwFI1-rjEuM/video.html
Take care, and again, welcome the The Army.
      SPIRAL OUT!

I think I like Tool so much because they bring several things together at once: multiple layers of complexity, incredible talent, and still very "listen-able". Tool songs evolve the more I listen to them, and I find that I rarely grow tired of their songs even after many listenings.

The tonality you're mentioning and how so much other stuff now sounds "the same" is down to compressing the sounds, using software instruments, etc. Also muffling of the drums. Carey has a custom crazy kit with amazing shells and they spend a ton of time getting it tuned to sound exactly how it should, and the result is each drum/cymbal/pad shines.

If I'm trying to turn someone on to Tool, Fear Inoculum is the first album I recommend, and I usually recommend people to in reverse order of their release. Being in my fifties, Invincible has a very powerful meaning to me... Trying to keep up youthful pursuits despite being on the wrong side of life. Is my favorite on the album. He’s not hitting it entirely right though. Not that it matters.
But in the original, Danny Carey is doing 5 bars of 1-2-3 and on the 6th bar he is doing 1-2 and then back to 1-2-3 on the 7th bar.
    Juuust some info..
