    Sorry for the rambling, I'm new to this. But, I wanted to show ye the all-in-a-box setup I now have w/ the itsy bitsy teeny tiny SC500 to be truly portable.
    We can now scratch in the train, at the bus stop or just lurking at home on the couch.
    For those who now want to build their own case, these are the MINIMUM inner dimensions you need:
    5 x 10 x 17cm
    The SC500 itself is approx. 4,5 x 9 x 13cm - so depending on your kind of battery pack and cables, you might need even more space.
    Excuse the rusty English and the sloppy scratching.
    Beats which are running in the background are mostly from the PHRASE LOOPER by SWIFTSTYLE:

    portablismgear.com/sc500-digi...
    CASE:
    generic "outdoor" case from the interwebz

      Thanks. Complements other portable things like an OP1 very well.
      Now, the only question left is: which headphone / in ear monitor to rock? ;)

      @@kalimbomusic Well, for now I just added a cable splitter (for the audio out). I am indeed dabbling with the idea of a mini speaker inside the case - it's just that the tiny computer speakers I found online might have a lack of proper "bass-y" resonance room... And, the space get's lesser with each addendum. Might have to rebuild the power switch to a tinier version.

    • @kalimbomusic
      @kalimbomusic Před 4 měsíci

      @@TheBinhable if you really want to do it you could look at speaker transducers - they can be pretty small and would basically turn the box into the speaker. They don't always have the cleanest tone but definitely more bass than a speaker of the same size!

    Super helpful, thank´s a lot! I just got my SC500 yesterday, but I am very new to all of this. You had wonderful tipps in your video, it helped me a lot to understand the SC 500 much. Because there is no "user manual" for newbies and you seem to have a lot of technical knowledge about the SC500/SC 1000 -> a video about the technical backgrounds / design - and some more tipps and tricks - would be perfect and highly appreciated. And have an rusty English is of course no problem 🙂 Better a good video with rusty English - than perfect English and no content....

      Thanks!
      Actually, there is a video guide by portablismgear. You should be able to find it w/ the video ID j9CJ7EI0yY4 (SC500 Digital Scratch Instrument - Video User Guide).
      I think it's fine for starting out w/ the device.
      Rasteri posted his first prototypes / proof of concept back in the day, too. But the best way to make progress w/ the device IMHO is to just put on a beat and practice, practice, practice.
      I hope you enjoy your SC500. Try to keep it near you (on your desk / couch / bed etc.) so you'll use it more often. ;)

      Thanks - I'll work on my rambling to get more to the point the next time. Hope, it helped you nonetheless. Do you happen to have a DSC500 or SC1000 yourself? And if so: which case?
      I still have an OG SC1000 here which I modded with a 7 inch vinyl and an extended baseplate to facilitate the fader in a more ergonomic position. Maybe I'll do a video on that one once it's finished... within the next two years.

      @@thestinkyweasel6297 current status is "end of March 2024" for the next batch. Are you on their waiting list(s)? Remind you, that each version of the SCs have their own waiting list (as far as I understood in my latest correspondence w/ portablismgear.com). That means: each colour variant is having its own waiting list. And those lists are on a first come first served basis. So some popular colours might have a considerably longer waiting time. So, even IF they are rebuild, there might be hundreds of people in front of you on the list. Maybe some lesser fancy versions are more easily to obtain?

      Well, from what i can remember, there have been two or three restocks in the last 2 months on portablismgear.com.
      Usually, it will be announced on their page. Currently they only state that the next restock will happen around February / March 2024. It might be useful to sign up for a notification reminder on their page.
      Please be aware, that those reminders are tied to the specific version of an SC (colorway specific). They apparently have a list for each version on a first-come-first-served base.
      Also, sometimes the site buckles under the load of too many requests - expecially when there are specific release dates / times floating around in the interwebz and everybody tries to get through.
      Anyhow - I hope you'll eventually get one of those tiny scratch companions to get your itch on.

    Is there a certain file limitation for this guy? I just got mine, updated the firmware and loaded my own sounds but i dont hear anything at all once i start it up. I bought it used, was working fine with the previous owners samples but when i clearded those and put mine on i hear nothing. if i fire it up without the flash drive tho, im able to scratch some sounds, Does the update have files built in??... I'm at a standstill for now..

    Hi. Good idea and nice work! Can you send the links, to these products; especially for the case please? I'm using the SC500 since last year, the month of may and really need a bigger case like this. Thanks in advance and all the best.

      Ahoi & thank you. I already tried to put the links in the description - but apparently I'll have to wait until the channel is seen as trustworthy enough to have outward links being displayed fully.
      Meanwhile, let's try this one here:
      hmf.de/outdoor-koffer-klein-wasserdichte-box-fuer-boot-und-freizeit-hmf-odk500-190-mm
      The HMF ODK 500 case is going by the ASIN B09HBVM5B1 in German amazon (apparently only the dot de domain finds this item).
      www.amazon.de/-/en/dp/B09HBVM5B1
      I don't know where you are located and if there is a (re)seller or way to ship to your place - but I hope you'll find a way to get a proper case for your SC500.
      P.S.: unfortunately I did not find a proper alternative from Peli. Usually they make a whole bunch of different sizes - but none of they current lineup fit this description (inner dimensions & hinge position).

    I have not had any success running the SC500 off a powerbank. Surprised to see you can get it to run stable and without noise.

    • @TheBinhable
      @TheBinhable  Před 4 měsíci

      Oh, that seems weird. What specifications does your powerbank have? Meaning, how much Ampere / Voltage does it provide? The specifications say that 2A are needed. Also, the obvious question: did you try different cables? Am I assuming correctly, that you CAN run it from a powerbank but with static issues? Do these issues also appear when you use a wall plug?

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish Před 4 měsíci

      @@TheBinhable Actually, it's been a while since I tried it, so I may have misremembered. The issue may have been that it wouldn't stay on because the power bank didn't "know" anything was plugged in. The static may have been when I tried running two devices off the same power bank. Not sure. I know I was having some kind of issues. Might have to test it again later.

    • @TheBinhable

      There is an accompanying application to create and transfer pixel-based screens / slides for the device. I came up w/ a couple different ones but in the end preferred this one when cutting. It reminds a bit of matrix and the scratch notation system combined. Sometimes I glance at it and excerpt some inspiration to translate into the hand movements.
      Hope this helps.

    des it have "back spin" effect?

    • @TheBinhable
      @TheBinhable  Před 4 měsíci

      Sorry, I'm afraid I'm not sure what you are referring to. If it's the mechanical bearing that you are talking about, there is no physical spring or anything like that which gives the platter a push after releasing it. It's just a platter on a ball bearing, at least to my knowledge and the last dismantling adventure.
      I tend to scratch with the playhead not playing (sample track on "pause"), so that the sample is moving exactly how the platter moves. That way I am forced to almost always have the hand on the platter and be "responsible" for any movement / sound - one could say I had to relearn the hand movement a bit to emulate all things usually being provided by the motor drag. specially the forward motion when normally releasing the sample.
      Please, clarify what you mean w/ the "back spin" effect - is it a sound effect thing or something mechanical?

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish Před 4 měsíci

      It requires a bit of technique, but yes, it's possible to do a backspin. The tricky thing is it's touch capacitive, and it seems to override that briefly if you get enough momentum on the backspin, but if you want a more reliable long-ish backspin, I would recommend very lightly resting one finger on the spindle so that the touch stays engaged. I would say that's easiest to do with the left hand (or spinning with one hand and touching with the other).

    • @TheBinhable
      @TheBinhable  Před 4 měsíci

      @@Swenglish thanks for clarifying - now I get the initial question. I indeed always have the finger on the platter / spindle (since it's so small anyway). But frankly speaking, I rarely need the spinback. I'm more obsessed w/ the accuracy of the platter ;)

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish Před 4 měsíci

      @@TheBinhable Yeah, I'm not a big backspin person myself, but it's important for some people. I had to test it out to remind myself of how well it could be done, and I found that keeping the touch lightly engaged in the middle while spinning it backward seems to be the best way of doing it. Finger on the platter tends to give a bit too much friction for a good backspin, whereas the spindle is smoother and easier to keep lightly engaged without stopping the spin. One thing that would have been neat is if there had been a metal part *next to* the platter that you could put your finger on to keep the touch engaged without touching any moving parts. That seems like it should be a very easy modification to make, actually. I might even do that in order to make it easier to do a right handed backspin. A small piece of adhesive copper shielding near the fader, perhaps.
