Sony has really upped their game for their entry-level price point with the VPL-XW5000. You get a very bright laser light engine with the same video processor found in their top-of-the-line GTZ380, and a new panel set designed for better contrast. This one is going to be very hard to beat!
At Audio Advice, we have been fans of Sony projectors for decades. Sony, as a company, is so deep in the complete process - from filming making to commercial cinemas - we have always felt they offered incredible projectors for the home theater market. Every year or two, when it's time for new models, we can’t wait to see what they came up with to improve what was already an outstanding product. For 2022, we were really lucky as Sony chose Audio Advice to get an exclusive look at the new models weeks before they announced them to the public. We all had to sign NDA’s and be sworn to secrecy, as this year, the changes were huge! The new units even came in large custom Pelican cases. While we only had them for a limited time, we did get to put them through their paces in 3 different locations, and everyone who saw one of these could not believe how much they offered for their cost.

These new projectors look incredible! Great to see Sony's in this price having 2000+ lumens. FINALLY!!!!!
They really nailed it with these new models! Thanks for watching
@@AudioAdvice I thought about getting the new entry-level 5000, I must have put that thing in my cart a few times already this past week, only to cancel it. I don't have a "bat cave" per se. I use a grey 110inch 16:9 screen in a rather odd-shaped room with a high angled sloped ceiling (white), which almost practically illuminates ATMOS speakers, and the projector is a Sony ES45 1080P 1800lumans. The 5000 is 2000 lumens and of course, 4k. Wish they would have bumped it to 2200 lumens. My question is WHY did SONY replace the 4096x2160 SXRD chip in the previous models with only a 3840x2160 SXRD chip?
@@nebtheweb8885 Yes, the change is confusing but the reality is the 4096 x 2160 chip was designed initially by the SONY digital cinema division and then transferred to the home division, with home theater the most popular aspect ratio is 4K UHD 16.9(3840x2160) so the extra pixel structure on left and right was almost never used, also since the chip was wider(17.9), when using 16.9 screens there was a noticeable light overspread on left and right, especially when the screen was over a white wall.
Since they were redesigning the new chip to make it more effective and with better contrast, Sony engineers decided it was appropriate to use the most popular aspect ratio for home theater use
I'm excited for the new models. I've always enjoyed the color, detail, and motion on the Sony projectors, and this looks to only improve with these new models.
It definitely is a great improvement! Thanks for watching
Reasons I chose this projector over the LS12000:
I have a 120” 16:9 screen which is basically as wide as I can go in my room. Therefore, when I watch a 2.4:1 movie, my screen width is still maxed out and I can mask off the top and bottom bars.
Lens memory is irrelevant because of what I stated above.
Lack of HDMI 2.1 is an overblown excuse for not choosing the Sony. The truth is most PS5 games are really only targeting 4k60 anyway and a lot are still only in 1080p. When a game is played in 4k120, it is giving up a lot of fine details. Sony also makes the PS5. You would think they might have included that if they really thought it would make a notable difference.
Lack of HDR 10+ or Dolby Vision also irrelevant as projectors will not be able to get anywhere close to the light output needed for those formats. The built in processor in the Sony will maximize what HDR image the projector is actually able to achieve.
Thanks for sharing! Sounds like you made a good choice 😁
Very excited to see a Native 4k Laser Projector at this price point...Especially from Sony!
Yes, it is quite a nice piece of gear!
Not a full 4k image..chips are UHD resolution cut down so overlap does not bleed on 16x9 screens..
Hi. Would you recommend the XW500ES over the lamp-based 590ES?
Great question. The amount of ambient lighting coming into the room is an important thing to keep in mind if not completely light controlled. We need a little more info about your setup and your goals to give you the best recommendation. Please feel free to reach out to us in chat at audioadvice.io/aa-chat and we will talk through all of your goals and your budget for getting the best picture possible. Thank you so much for watching.
Sony is one of the best projector manufacturers on the planet. I'm looking forward to seeing this new game changing projector.
They sure are! Thanks for watching
Wow! That is some serious performance for an "entry level" Home Theater projector.

Great video as usual. You guys are top notch. Very intriguing lineup but the lack of lens memory in the 5000 is disappointing. Guys like myself who have a 235 :1 screen are pretty much screwed. Unfortunately for the extra 6 grand that’s just way to much for me. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, Sony has never had one with lens memory in this price range, it has always been much more. Thanks for watching
No powered lens and no lens memory..seriously! Deal breaker for me.

What is the minimum throw distance for the Sony xw5000es with

A little more than 11' Thanks for watching
HELP! plz. What can the LAN port be used for on the projector? Can I connect my laptop wirelessly to send picture to the projector? Does this projector also have Wifi connection?
Thanks for your question. There is no WIFI onboard. A lot of folks use a home theater receiver with their projector. For example, the LAN port will let you connect the projector to your home network for a stable hardwired connection with a home theater receiver or even to your router. The receiver would then allow you to connect up to two A/V sources out to this projector over HDMI cable. If your laptop has an HDMI output or another A/V output using an adapter, you could also connect an A/V source directly to this projector such as a laptop. There are other projectors that also could work this way. Can this handle a 150” screen and retain the bright crisp 4K in a room with black wall/ceiling and light controlled? If so what would that minimum throw distance be? 16:9 Screen Thanks!
If you have a good screen like a Stewart with a gain of 1.3 you should get around 130 nits which is enough for HDR. 181” would be the minimum. Please reach out to our team at www.audio advice.com for more information. Thanks for watching
@@AudioAdvice thank you for the input! Do you have a video I can look at to compare the silver ticket or Elite vs the Stewart? My hope was to put more budget to get into a better projector and save a little on the screen if possible.
@@kenpoS2K Sorry, we do not have a video on that. We can not stress how important the screen is and there is no question Stewart is the best. You will likely have your screen for decades and projector tech will obviously change over time. We would suggest the opposite that you put more budget into the screen since you will have it for so long
@@AudioAdviceI watch lot of your videos. What is your opinion on Screen Inovations projection screens? Are thy remotely close to Stewart? Also it’s been suggested to me when I purchase the Sony 5000 that I add a panamorphic lens to get the best results on a 120" screen in the 2.4. wide screen format. Is this accurate ? No black bars and utilizing millions more pixels that might be wasted on the black bars ??

Can anyone compare this to a 695 or 715es in terms of picture quality and performance? specifically black level comparisons?
Enjoyed the video/review & info. One comment about focus, shift & zoom made me chuckle - "All focus, shift, and zoom adjustments are manual. In some respects we actually prefer this method". Everyone would prefer the electric/motorized method. That's why they are on all of the more expensive models. But I'm "nitpicking". Picture performance is the goal.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm just curious why would you really need it to be motorized don't you just make those adjustments once and you're set anyways?
The video looks great on my Sony Xperia phone! Maybe one day I can replace my current projector with this.
HaHa Thanks for watching
I could use some help. First of all thanks for the video. You guys helped me choose this project over the Epson which was a hard choice for me because of my years of Epson projector owner experience.
This projector is amazing but I cannot figure out how to do 4k and HDR at the same time. I'm using the PS5 as my 4k player but the PlayStation says my device can only support HDR in 1080p, not 4k. I thought my receiver was bottle necking my signal but I get the same error when I plug the PS5 directly into the projector. I cannot wrap my novice mind around it.
Any help would be much appreciated!
It should work. Hopefully you purchased your unit from Audio Advice as if you did we can have our tech team help you figure it out. Thanks for watching
After owning projectors for the last decade or so, I will seriously consider a large size TV on my next upgrade for my small home theater room. There are many 85"+ smart TVs available for less than $2k, so yes price is a big factor for me as well as fan noise, energy efficiency (?) and heat generated. If my theater room was much bigger, then a projector would be the only option for now.
Yes, in a smaller space, the new large flat panels are a great option, but you have to get a projector to go big! Thanks for watching
I went the opposite: had a 50'' Pioneer Plasma for years, changed that now for a 65'' LG Oled and additionally I put a 120'' Screen in front of the TV (built in the ceiling). Beamer is on the the back of the room (beamer lift, integrated in a light voute) and so we can choose now (for daily stuff the TV for movies the big screen).
The price difference from 64 to 77 with the G1 LG would have been 1500 Euro. And 77'' is way off 120''. 100'' TVs are really expensive too so in the same size, the Beamer/big screen combination is imho better bang for the buck (ok, if I had bought a Stuart screen than the calculation would be a litte different 🙂).
@@rotgimbal Having both options like that is a good idea. I currently have a 105" fixed screen which is big enough for my small theater room. In the future I will weigh my options and perhaps I will do the same as you did. For now I would hate to get rid of my fixed mounted Silver Ticket screen so time will tell. Thanks for sharing your set up.
How are the black levels compared to the jvc line?
Both are excellent projectors that are excellent values in the price ranges. Thanks for watching
be interesting to know this as JVC have always had better contrast
Hey , one question. Is it much same or just little better than 290ES projector. Can you please let me know your views.

Got an HW40ES and love the motion. Have an ls12000b on preorder with deposit paid. The new Sony looks good, I think Epson has better gaming chops as can do UHD 120fps. Sony has better contrast. Manual lens I'm not bothered by too much.
Good luck with the LS12000. Thanks for watching

Great overview ! I just got an Optoma UST projector (my first projector !) but I'll surely consider one of the Sonys when I upgrade in a few years.
Glad you liked it. UST is getting very popular. Thanks for watching
Does this variant carry X1 ultimate processor?
It does, thanks for watching
Here is a silly question... is this better than the Sony VPL-HW45ES? Yes, I know the 45 is a 1080p vs the 4k of the XW5000, but both are manual focus and zoom. It seems SONYs not including motorized for both of those functions a downer. You can get motorized on an EPSON albeit it is a pixel shifter and for half the price. For 6,000 that should come standard. Also, how are the black levels and contrast levels on this xw5000? Does it do 3d?
There is no silly question! Yes it is far better than the 45. The black levels were fantastic. It did not say anywhere in the specs we saw about it being capable of 3D. Thanks for watching
@@AudioAdvice I asked because I have had the 45 since 2017 on a 110in grey screen. Despite its lack of motorized lens functions, I really like its picture quality. Blacks are satisfactory, better than some DLPs. But man, that laser light source on the 5000 and x1 chip sure sound enticing, and of course the fact that it is 4k would take me to the next level without having to settle for a pixel shifter.
@@nebtheweb8885 It sounds like you would love the new 5000! The 45 was a great projector, we sold a ton of those and most are still going strong.
@@AudioAdvice 5000 doesnt do 3d. Why would Sony not include it? It has to be capable or is this because these new projectors only do 60hz?
@@railerswim The 6000 and 7000 will do 3D with an aftermarket RF extender. We assume they did market research and when thinking of things to cut out to allow it to have the laser engine and new processor it did not make the cut just like motorized lens memory. But the 5000 offers a lot of performance for its price
I've been waiting for an affordable Sony laser.
Thanks for sharing!
But why no 3d support on the 5000? I’ll stick with a vw325 instead. Seriously missing features that the 325 had makes the 5000 a deal breaker. It may be brighter but it is less convenient.
You really have to see how much better the new processor does. Thanks for watching
Seems to have a lot less setup flexibility in terms of zoom and lens shift compared with the big brothers (or main competitor brands) seems the manual system might be a limiting factor
The throw range and lens shift is very similar to the 6000 and 7000. You just have to do all of this once manually, then you are done. Thanks for watching
@@AudioAdvice According to official website specs
XW6000ES lens shift: +/- 85%, Horizontal +/- 36% throw ratio: 1.35:1 to 2.84:1
XW5000ES lens shift: +/- 71%, Horizontal +/- 25% throw ratio: 1.38:1 to 2.21:1
Throw ratio difference at max zoom might just make it don't work in my room :(, also I am not sure exactly how much Horizontal lens shift I use since my Epson has +/- 47, I am probably over the limit

You need about 6". This one does have slightly different throw ratios, you might want to check the math. Thanks for watching
Can this projector work screen 150 inch with 2.35:1 aspect ration
This is a 16:9 projector. You could use it with a Panamorph lens and do that though. It has the settings for it to work. Thanks for watching

@@alameri40 technically yes but that will be a royal pain as it’s manual zoom and shift.
Was getting excited but no lens memory and manual shift means I’ll stick with jvc.
The new releases are awesome too! Especially the new Np5! Even for a lamp, the use in a dedicated theatre will go easy on the lamp
The 6000 and 7000 have memory.
Does it fit curved screen ? thanks
A curved screen used to be used when you had an anamorphic lens to reduce the bowing effect, we recommend a flat screen with newer projectors. Thanks for watching

Obviously an exciting release from Sony, and a great response to the recent JVC models. So great to see some more competition finally in this price range along with the Epson LS12000.
Regarding 3D the writeup on Projector Central states that it does support 3D, so I think there is some confusion somewhere.
HDR - how does Sony's system compare to JVC's dynamic tone mapping, which has been the gold standard in that for the last few years? Will be exciting to see full reviews come out on this.

Does it support hdr 10+?
Sony does not support HDR10+ only Dolby Vision and currently there are no normal/long throw projector with Dolby Vision. Only ultra short throw projector
The manual lens shifting, zooming and focus is a deal breaker for me. It's such a shame to spend this kind of coin and not get that courtesy. I don't want to mess around with this on a ceiling mounted projector. It feels lazy and less than premium and I'm used to a fully motorized setup on my old JVC.
They opted for a laser engine and more light output over lens memory, which for 16:9 customers is better. But if you are into 2.40, you should look at the 6000. Thanks for watching

@@ryankramer NZ7 compared to the RS6000. czcams.com/video/QgdBEFJ8C-g/video.html
How this stacks up against LS12000 that is also Epson's new value banger? 120hz/4K, HDMI 2.1, cheaper, motorized lens, bit brighter, better lens. Sony has X1 Ultimate processor so better processing, better contrast, motion. Manual lens sure is a downer, also their quality.
We like the Epson projectors as well. If you want to do a 2.40 widescreen, the LS12000 is a great value. But it is pixel shifting to get 4K and the Sony does have a better processor, however you have to more than double the price to get to the 6000 and lens memory for widescreen. Hope this helps and thanks for watching
How can a projector be "Native" 4K? It's either capable of 4K resolution pixels projection, or its not. Native 4K CONTENT makes sense, that whether its upscaled or not.
It's the method of how it's achieved. The Epson 12000 for example uses 4 way pixel shifting 1080p panels and can display a 4k pattern of native 4k content. You could put it side by side with other actual 4k native panel projectors and probably not be able to tell a difference. But since the Epson doesn't use a native 4k panel in projecting, images in motion behave slightly different. In particular, if you were gaming in 4k with no anti-aliasing, you might see edges look slightly jagged. Now understand, you'd need to be standing 5 feet away from a 120" screen looking really close to see these differences.
At the end of the day, from what I've seen in person, the pixel shifting is more than good enough for the perceived resolution, and the attention of the manufacturer should instead be placed elsewhere. (Better contrast, higher brightness.)
@@ryankramer thank you for that! Very interesting!
Why Sony? No lens memory, no 3D, no hdmi 2.1 and unknown if will match JVC blacks and tone mapping. You had a chance to conquer the 5k to 7k market....sigh.
