- The Malaysian Grand Prix has been missing from the F1 calendar since the last race in 2017, but F1 fans want it back. The Sepang International Circuit is considered one of the best race tracks in the world, and somewhere that consistently provided great racing in F1. So why did it lose it's spot on the F1 calendar, and why hasn't it returned? Why was The Malaysian Grand Prix, abandoned by F1? Enjoy!

I'm Malaysian and attended all 19 races in Sepang. Still miss it to this day.
Wow great dedication! Looked like a brilliant event 🇲🇾
Holy moly! Thats so cool
Wow! Looks like you had a lot of fun! 🤩❤️🇲🇾
I'm NOT malaysian, I attended 0 races in Sepang, My heart is still broken from the removal of this race :(
Man. That means you got to see Schumacher's masterclasses in 99 and 2001 in person. 🥵
This video didn't go into it, but 99 was one of Schumacher's greatest performances. He was so quick he had to let Irvine pass him twice after pitting. He pulled something like a 6 second gap in the first few laps, just to show he could, before dropping back to help Irvine in the title race. All of this on his first race back after breaking his leg at Silverstone.
And 2001...well that was just bloody fun.
As former staff of Sepang International Circuit (SIC) the main problem with F1 is the ticket price. Malaysia is a developing country but the ticket price are same as developed country. Malaysian minimum wage is 385$, while the ticket cost 215$. While MotoGP ticket price are around 65$, you can see why MotoGP has full spectator.
exactly. why go to a single F1 race when you can go to 4 MotoGP race (with a little extra spent) ? Also motorcycle culture, and F1 keeps shooting itself in the foot
@@imranahmad-uh9fi exactly, yes F1 race!
exactly, the ticket price! It would be good if it was worth the rupees.!
not only the ticket price is high, the food and etc also super expensive.
@@babisotonggg this is true. Vendor are given high price of rental for their lot/space. So they tend to put high price to recoup during the 3 days period. Some also cannot break even during the event.
Sepang should replace Miami or Abu Dhabi. One on the best circuit designed by Tilke.
Agree! I think Miami should go..
@@MadeByPerspectiveif they have to have Miami/Vegas, imo they should alternate years. 2 races in the us is plenty (and I'm a us resident)
Same with the gulf states too - pick 2 a year: Saudi and Bahrain one year, Qatar and Abu Dhabi the other (even though the human rights violations really should have Saudi off the calendar)
Replace Vegas with Sepang
@@BandaiNamco2005vegas is fine. Miami can be binned off, by far the worst US track
Hello fellow Malaysian. I'm glad that you made a content about this great track. Today we had the opportunity to watch the Asian Le Mans series at this track, good racing. Hopefully F1 comes back here soon.
Great to see the track gets plenty of use still! Thanks for watching 😄
Yeah the track schedule full with mcs national events, gt3, gt4, MotoGP shakedown+preseason test+race,f4, Toyota gazoo, 88laps 1000km endurance & many more at almost every week. It's hard to say but hopefully f1 will coming back. ALeMans recently so chaos on race 1 when it's raining ended up with red flag 😂
@@imjuzsayin..5017 didn't watch race 1, only race 2 😀
You may watch it back on Asian Le Mans Series CZcams channel in live section
surprisingly the circuit organizers are able to make the track alive by organizing small events such as track days and cycling days at night, it's just that F1 is too bloody expensive! @@MadeByPerspective
One thing: expensive. 2017, the last of the malaysian gp. Man, so many memories, from seb's multi 21 in 2013 to hamilton's oh no no heartbreaking radio moment in 2016
Many many iconic moments!
Schumacher and Rubens flying of track because it was pooring our of the sky. And Schumi winning cause he was the first pitting for inters
Nah, we need races to support USA 😂
Alonso first pole and Raikkonen first win
Jenson Button won with Brawn GP on a red flag after completing only 31 laps.
I would definitely want Sepang to return but lack of funds and competition with the nearby Singapore Grand Prix is why Sepang isn't on the calendar anymore. It definitely needs to make a comeback.
The Malaysian government have made it perfectly clear they aren't interested in throwing money away to run a race has never made a profit just because F1 fans like it. Of course, they don't like it enough to actually go there and support it of course.
@@MrSniperfox29 the main reason is because of how weak malaysia ringgit really is(compare to usd) n the monthly salary for mid n low income people range from rm1500 up to rm3500(around 320 - 750 in USD). so yea people barely able pay for that(unless u come from high class) just because theres more important n cheaper stuff to use their money on.
@@arep7771 Spot on. Back in 2013, the "cheapest" ticket that I remember buying for myself was under RM100 (can't remember the exact price, maybe it was around RM60-70), and that was on the hillside view where Turn 8 is located. That was the only affordable option for me as I was just finished secondary school and I was watching it with a friend of mine who share similar interest on F1.
For last MotoGP event for Sepang Circuit of 2023, the highest ticket price for the Main Grandstand (where you can see the pit) is just under RM400. It's a no wonder why a lot of Malaysians chose to go watch that (with their entourage from bike clubs of course).
Malaysian people prefer motogp than f1 coz of ticket price where motogp ticket more cheap than f1
Agree I stay in singapore and it feels different when there is singapore gp but no malaysia gp
Man, I can't stand seeing Sepang off the F1 schedule. It is such a cool track with challenging turns, long straights, lots of space, and a very nice design. It has produced so many cool races since 1999 and I think it's a crime to see this track having fewer spectators. I just hope we can come back to this track. 🙏❤🇲🇾
Malaysians prefer MotoGp
really, wow. Is there one in your country? Is there no place to race now?
Ironic that the best tracks majority of the time have money issues when it comes to F1, and there are some mid and/or bad tracks that have the money to keep F1 at their tracks
Perspective address this please, we need answers
He already did, people in the region would much rather fly to Singapore for a GP than to Malaysia.
@@D3Vlicious Make the races on back to back weekends and people attend both, while having a short vacation and visiting some nice places over there in between the races. haha.
I just went to Sepang during MotoGP and there were so many people! They said the spectators are higher from the year before. I thought I'm going there this weekend to watch Asian Le Mans & F4 SEA (free entrance!) but not feeling very well :')
The 1999 race was one of Michael's 10 best races, IMO. It was his first race back, destroyed everyone by over a second in qualifying, and absolutely broke Mika during the race.
You must Not forget that until this day it"s one of the most popular MotoGP test & race destinations! :) So fortunatly, we still can see the track in all its Glory 🎉🎉
So very happy that we still have it 🤩
Let"s HOPE that it will return!
As a Malaysian sepang is always one of those tracks where it's never gonna give u a dull race with its great layout and unpredictable weather which makes it a special circuit in everyone opinion with Petronas now being a title sponsor as well as the growing fan base of F1 fans in Malaysia I hope one day sepang can be back in the circuit seeing how this circuit still host races in Motogp
There's a track condition during race when the north section started heavily rain & the south section still dry 😅

I would love for F1 to come back to my home country. The track is great for racing with the weather being unpredictable. But money is definitely the main reason why it's not returning anytime soon. It's a shame ngl
Literally just rewatch the highlights of the last Malaysian GP , impeccable timing
Superb!
As a Malaysian I’d agree that the interest for motogp was always more. But since the Netflix series, there has been a peak in interest in f1, more than ever before. I think the major reason as to why it’s so difficult to hold a Grand Prix here nowadays is the cost for the spectators. Ticket prices have just been soaring worldwide. It already became unaffordable to the average Malaysian in the 2010’s. Hope to see this track come back soon though.
agree!! Sekarang tiada grandprix di sini. Selanjutnya. Kemas beg anda dan pergi ke negara anda sendiri. Tiada lagi sarkas di sini.
Are the MotoGP tickets generally better priced?
@@tysonngubeni8545 yes, it's cheaper plus malaysia has a big motorcycle culture.
I'm still praying that F1 may come back one day cause the Malaysian GP was my first ever F1 experience introducing me to this wonderful world of motor racing.
I miss this circuit so bad.
Same 😞
Sepang still alive with MotoGP, Asian Le Mans & F4 Asia. I hope Super GT will comeback to Sepang and WEC could also go there. F1 is hard because lack of connection like before we have Alex Yoong who drive for Minardi but after that Fairuz Fauzi wasnt even given chance a seat during Caterham era. Unlike MotoGP home rider was present and they have won before like Khairul Idham Pawi and Malaysia have own team in MotoGP so fans have hope this sport have a future.
Malaysia is definitely one of the tracks that belongs back on the calendar.
only if the Governments ( or somebody in power ) have the chance to make millions out of it. Same old story - easy money....no more.
also during that period, F1 was dominated by 1 team, that is Mercedes, which is also one of the reason, the attendance drop that mention by the organiser. Some Malaysian F1 fans want excitement which motogp can provide that. They don't want a boring race. Paid huge money to attend the race but boring.
as Indonesian who watch MotoGP on Sepang multiple time, I love Sepang for their convenience cause Mandalika is so far from west java also it's quite expensive too
Sepang is so good! It would be very interesting to see the current cars in such a wide circuit with so much overtaking possible.
One of the Tilke circuits where racing was great. Unpredictable weather and multiple overtaking spots. It's a shame that this circuit is not in the calendar.
Flew out from the int’l airport today near the circuit, made me wonder about F1 here - a real timely upload!
I always liked this gp. Also the weather is unpredicatble what adds a lot of extra suprise elements to a race. Also the track flows really good and its a very nice track
I only attended the 2017 event, watched Max Verstappen win! The circuit is so convenient as well just next to the airport. Max has a 100% win record when I have attended an F1 race🤣
You should have gone to Singapore this year 😂🥰
🤣😆
@@user-hh8sm7mi1w hindonesial 🤣
I just went to the 4 hours asian le mans today which is at sepang. The track is a beauty and always offer exciting racing. Yes its very disappointing to see f1 arent racing here anymore (considering the fact that hosting f1 is the main reason the track is built at the first place) and instead we get three races a year at us (which is too many) that just cause more and more dissatisfaction among fans
I wish more foreign viewers would flock to see races in Sepang with the weakening Ringgit. Only you guys could keep races here alive because we can't afford the ticket anymore...
I really hope that F1 would be held there again. It is one of the best circuit out there. Though the weather is kinda challenging, but that makes it more interesting to watch F1.
I miss this track, but money is the ultimate reason why it's abandoned.
Its not really abandoned since MotoGP still race there
A lot of other series still race there but Formula One
Sepang was amazing. When it was in the rain season it was carnage (in a good way)
Such a shame, my Mum and I went to watch a race when I was 5. Now when we drive past the stadium.....it looks abandoned 😔.
the track near my house, currently the track is always in good condition and well maintained even though it is 25 years old.. hope to have an F1 race here one day.. gives a very nostalgic moment to F1 fans
i absolutely agree. the track looks incredible at night.
As a Malaysian, I became a fan in 2019 and i just found out that there were f1 races here before 2017. I hope F1 can return to my home country and i could maybe watch it at the stands for the experiecence.
thanks for ur compliment on our country's circuit..
I love this circuit. Never a dull race. Miss it loads. Great video thank you 👍
I wish I had gone there when the race was still running, but I was just a kid (or a broke student at the end). I'm in Singapore and the night race is fun but having a proper purpose-built circuit next door to us was awesome.
As a fan of your channel. Thank you for covering this. Hoping Malaysian GP to be back ❤
As a Singaporean who enjoys watching F1 race on proper circuits, I'd trade off Marina Bay for Sepang any day.
Sepang and Istanbul are the 2 tracks I want back in F1 more than any others
I loved Nürburgring GP also (regular track, not Nordschleiffe obviously). But Malaysian GP was the best!!
I think with the rising popularity of F1 now, if Sepang returns to the calendar, it would bring in more spectators than before. Here’s hoping that it happens soon, because it is realistically my only chance of attending an F1 race 🥲
It may not be an F1 car but I still am grateful to be presented the opportunity to drive on the Sepang Circuit on track days!
It really is a beautiful and challenging layout for any form of motorsports.
One of the best tracks for racing action as well as driving it on the F1 games.
Pisses me off that we have to race on dead tracks like Miami but great ones like Sepang are not even in talks to return. Street tracks are killing racing.
Malaysia Mentioned 🗣
🇲🇾 ❤️
I'd give up the Singapore GP in a heartbeat if it means Sepang will return
It's such a shame that F1 don't race in Sepang anymore, since MotoGP still races there and the races produced by the track are phenomenal.
Sepang Night Race would be insane, totally make a trip from Melbourne to see that, maybe get to see two GP's in one year for the first time 😅
Hi, I a Malaysian & attended the first race in 1999. Everybody was expecting a wet race, thus many brought raincoats. However, it was hot & blazing day and I regretted not bringing an umbrella, which would fit a rainy or sunny day. I remembered Michael Schumacher, with Mika behind him, driving so slow at every corners and sped up at straights, just to build up space between Irvine (whom is leading) and both of them. And I could clearly see Mika raising his fist, perhaps angry at Michael's antics. And the engine's sound and vibration was much better in 1999 compared to 2013 (my final attendance at Sepang). Without an earplug, or anything to plug the ear, perhaps one could be a deaf for a week.
I too remember michael! definitely incredible !
Sepang was always one of my favorite F1 races there was an endurance race there a couple weeks ago and it was great to see it once again
I watched some of the Asian Le Man Series racing there this weekend and was hoping that one day we will see F1 return to Sepang, such an awesome track for Grand Prix cars.
Tracks like Sepang, Hockenheim shod be back in the calendar. Get rid off Miami and Vegas. We dont want both the tracks as its jus the money and not racing. Your videos are making an impact and i hope it draws the attention of FOM, to consider. You might actually look like a representative for us loyal f1 fans. Thanks
Vegas was decent, and if it works in the long run we could see F1 host more events by itself and then go to Africa (f1 wants to go to Africa at some point, and if they hosted the event themselfs, it would be alot easier).
Unfortunately as the saying goes: money talks and bullshit walks. The cost to run an F1 race is costing millions and the Malaysian government knows this. Plus with Malaysia being two-wheeled crazy that's not going to happen in the long run
@@Lappali but firstly liberty media wants tracks in New York and other places in the US. Talks have been going on abt Africa but I feel unfortunately liberty media might close the case as they did once. We wanna se how Vietnam gp would've been. But again the liberty media ignored it. It's cruel
@@Limegreenedragon atleast hockenheim can work I'm sure about that. I won't be surprised if the Chinese gp would be canceled again....

I really miss this race. The Malaysian Grand Prix was always great fun and and absolute highlight on the calendar.
Is sad that great circuits are being ignored in favour of dull street circuits !
As not just a spectator but frequent track day enthusiast at Sepang, I can say that it remains in good condition, ready at any time to host races. Please come back. 🙏
One of the best Tilke tracks for sure. Usually an interesting race with changeable weather and the first and second corners usually causing incidents on the first lap.
I'm a Malaysian, and I love F1, I attended the last 2 races there! Amazing track hope it returns soon!
Thank you for the great views of sepang f1 circuit! We still wish f1 would come back and at affordable ticket price especially at the grandstands.
Yes! Make it a night race! i literally have the same idea when i first saw the circuit and before you even mentionioning it.
Just last week I watched the two 4-Hour Mutli-class races of the Asian Le Mans Series and the racing was great. Many corners hve more than one line that can be taken. Even the first three corners are often a side-by-side drag race! I would love to see it back on the F1 schedule.
Before Shanghai, Sepang was THE race of the season with unexpected weather. A weekend race could be Hot, Slightly Raining or Heavy Rain in a matter of hours. And this was even included in many F1 game that features Sepang. Loved it!
I thought I saw this video before, but I didn't. You did nearly identical video about Malaysia 3 years ago! You must really miss it :( I think it'd be great to go back. Cheers 🥂
when i was 7 years old, watching fernando alonso winning the race in sepang, now im 25 years old, getting opportunity racing in sepang!! love this track 🥳🥳
I like to see remake videos, improving on your old ones and getting new and better contentfor the remake is genius. Hope you keep doing these types of vids
attending motogp event in sepang many years ago was awesome for me, before watching the race, some motorcycle manufacturers hired stuntbikers to do stunts on their newly launched bikes for promotion on the vendor area
A night race in Sepang would be incredible
was here in 2006 for the GP, great circuit for the spectators, lots of spectacular viewing points, sad it's not on the calendar anymore
I absolutely agreed with night F1 race. Even without F1 at the moment but Sepang international circuit are not abandoned but full house almost everyday with plenty of trackday, domestic and international racing events. I already went three trackday myself this year alone, what a spectacular experience SIC.
I would reallly want this track to come back to f1 but seeing how it is, i guess we wont have my home country race for now-
Should still be an F1 mainstay. Glad MotoGp still puts on a hell of a show there every year 👍
Not to mention ,Our rising star nikita mazepin got his first win in Race 1 Asia Le Man series on last saturday and the race it was a more chaos than sunday when the heavy rain came in the final 30 minutes eventually got red flagged. Ngl those car were very quick especially at Turn 5-6 and Turn 13-14 ,kinda resemble a roller coaster.
As Malaysian, yes i do miss F1 race in Sepang. It take lots of efforts to gain Malaysian interest on motorsport like F1.
As a malaysian who only started watching F1 in 2020, I woul love to see F1 return to Sepang, i would probabily attend every year. I've only ever attended 1 f1 race which was Singapore 2022
Making it a night race could very well be the solution, it would change the atmosphere completely. If they made the tickets a bit cheaper to get more asses on seats, it would be a proper festival.
A Malaysian here. Personally thinking, since the F1 fanbase is slowly growing (thanks to DTS), I think more people would attend if the ticket prices are lower than what it were before. Since it's closer to Malaysians and if the tickets are cheaper, I think more people would come and attend the F1 races held there.
yes, if it had gone for the rupees, it would have been worth a lot!
With current "prices" for tracks to get on calendar (total amount that tracks pay per year could allow to build one new track from scratch!), multiple great tracks will not come back.
Watched 2 races there and i still miss it. Even in the cheapest crowd section you still get a lot of live actions
It's the same reason Buriram is unlikely to host F1 even tho Albon is on the grid. Also Singapore GP's attraction is not even the race itself, but the concert. I've known people around the region who bought tickets just to watch the concert, and don't even watch the race.
2008 malaysia grand prix .first grand prix with my late father . so much memories .
I may not a malaysian but really wish a return of f1 at sepang since the track is so close to thailand and provide a wayyyy more interesting layout compare to the fia grade 1 track we have here (chang int circuit)
Here’s why it’s possible. A night race on a purpose built circuit. Add in the fact that rain is possible, you want drama for to attract new fans and want it naturally to appeal to the hardcore? There you go.
Sepang got abandoned because of the price of the ticket, most local that are interested can't really afford it, the tourist are interested can't go to there or didn't bother to go because of lack of transportation
Easily one of the best tracks in the world. My favorite!
Well many great tracks that's not in F1 calendar atm, if they have the money like the Middles East/US to held a Grand Prix, then wouldn't have much people moaning about it
2001 was a crazy year with the weather and Jos Verstappen in P2, whilst the rainmaster Michael Schumacher went off. Worth a rewatch on F1TV with Gordon Murray still as commentator.
It is easily the best original Tilkedrome. The insane weather helps a lot
I love this track, hope they bring it back, if they can race in other very hot places, they can race here.
1:57 Look how small the McLaren looks, compared to the longer Ferrari!! 😮
I think if it's not too near in terms of race dates with Singapore it can work specially now that F1 is so famous. If by a miracle that it will happen to be the 1st race of the season then it's a win.
The Singapore GP entrance to the F1 in 2008 also impacted hugely on Malaysia GP. The neighboring country, which provides easy access to the circuit (walking distance or just a few MRT train stops from many hotels as F1 Singapore race track is located in the middle of the city), more attractive night race and also host F1 concert performance by top international artists and bands means many F1 fans must pick which these two countries they want to go, especially if they are tight on the budget. Often times Singapore GP was the choice. Even Malaysian ex-Sport minister Khairy Jamaluddin admitted that Singapore GP is more attractive than F1 Sepang Malaysia
To be honest, on top of the motorcycle culture, the sound of the V6 engine in 2014 kills the passion for some casual fans to watch the race.
Again this "though you might not like Herman Tilke designs. Well let's be honest this was one of his first if not his first F1 track he designed. It was after his 3rd or 4th track he designed that it was clear he didnt have the talent to keep his streak going, Don't forget the genius design of Sepang is one of the main reasons he got invited back to design tracks. Wich to me is ridiculous. If i need my bike repaired i aint going to a shoemaker either. Point is dont let a garden architect design F1 tracks.
As a Malaysian, I’d say the sales definitely will have go higher now as many people started picking f1 up again I believe partly becuz of exposure from dts.
We need this track again in F1
Truly one of my all time favourite races
SO SAD
As a Malaysian,Although I didn't attend to F1 at Sepang because I was young AF...if they made its way back into the calendar I would definitely attend there and hear the F1 engines roaring at high speeds
I can't imagine racing at night in raining condition. That will be wild!
Is that ever happen? If not then it would be crazyyy
This is probably one of my favourite motogp tracks would love to see it in f1
They did try to do a dawn race for similar reason as sg gp. But it got dark too quickly and dangerous.
