  • Throughout Formula 1's history, circuits have come and gone - and naturally, there are some that we dearly miss. Technical editor Jake Boxall-Legge has picked 10 circuits he'd like to see back on the F1 calendar, and delves into their past to pick out why they were so exciting. Please feel free to disagree with his unsolicited opinions.

    Tilke circuits get a lot of stick, but honestly part of the problem is that they took to of his best - Sepang and Istanbul - off of the calendar.

    • @filmandfirearms
      @filmandfirearms Před 4 lety +84

      He's got a couple bad ones, but in general, his circuits are pretty good. Bahrain was Tilke, COTA, the updates to Hockenheim were great. He has some bad ones, like Sochi and Abu Dhabi, but to be fair, Sochi was an example of business being put ahead of good racing. It wasn't Tilke who decided it should be built around the Olympic stadium, which I think was the real killer of Sochi, since he was very much held back by the area he had to work with

    • @filmandfirearms
      @filmandfirearms Před 4 lety +11

      @@lewis8552 Grass runoff is a terrible idea and is only done to save cost in areas where runoff is very rarely necessary. Kvyat once had a terrible crash at Suzuka because his left rear clipped the grass. He wasn't even on the grass, he just touched it with a tire, got wheelspin, and spun it into the wall. If you go fully onto the grass, through a lockup or anything like that, you can't slow down and you can't steer because slicks don't grip grass. It gets even worse if you're talking a wet-dry race. Spain '96 proved that gravel can sometimes be worse than tarmac when it comes to slowing a car down, which is the purpose of a runoff area

    • @lewis8552
      @lewis8552 Před 4 lety +24

      @@filmandfirearms That's why you would have grass then tarmac runoff instead of grass to gravel then wall. Grass is great for punishing drivers, it pulls the driver off the track and slows them down. Kyvats crash was more worse generally because of the lack of space between the grass and the wall, the gravel causing the the roll wasn't ideal as well. I don't mind gravel but I can see why its generally not the best(especially for bike riders), grass can be a good deterrent if used properly.

    • @filmandfirearms
      @filmandfirearms Před 4 lety +11

      @@lewis8552 So you want drivers to slide across the grass into the wall every time they make a small mistake? There's a reason they don't use grass as a runoff very often. There is no grip on grass and a tiny mistake gets turned into a DNF and possible driver injury. It would be particularly bad if you had brake failure going into one of Tilke's signature hard braking zones. Gravel, when dry, provides a ton of friction and that slows the car down, but grass doesn't provide any, and astroturf is even worse. You'd be flying into the wall at nearly 300 km/h

It wasn’t built on Public Exchequer’s Money, it was built by a Private Group named “Jaypee Associates”, which used to carry out FIA F1 Race Events on its own expense, no backing or aid by the Govt, a single race used to cost them over INR 1 Billion (13.6 Million USD), which is quite a lot of money for a Private Entity.
