ASOS: are their clothes worth your money? ǀ Fashion haul but different ǀ Justine Leconte

  • This is not a regular ASOS haul. It's rather an ASOS experiment... I am a fashion designer so I did a little experiment: I ordered several types of garments, fabrics, materials, details and seams to analyse the fit, the proportions, the quality and the overall worth of the items. Is ASOS worth it?
    When the pieces don't fit or demonstrate poor quality, I explain why and what is missing - this is to help you assess the quality of the clothing you get online. I hope you will find this helpful!
    Thumbs up if you liked this video :-)

    LINKS & THINGS MENTIONED
    I can't recommend the garments shown in this video. Hence I won't link them here.
    Note: I ordered from the German website (since I am based in Berlin) and the prices shown on the orange price tags are the German prices i.e. the prices I paid.
    The prices you saw while I was scrolling and shopping are those of the Irish website - because I needed a version in English to show you. That's why they are different prices. ASOS prices vary depending on your country.

      You know I feel like this too, we're always too ready to blame ourselves and criticise our own bodies, but these garment manufacturers are instrumental in giving us all a complex (well maybe not me at 56 anymore), but what about young impressionable girls? It's time all manufacturers worked to one standard sizing and all varying proportions are taken into consideration, because none of us are mannequins x

    I applaud you in critiquing this company Justine. And this is the exact reason why I will not purchase clothing online. I did try a few years ago and was always disappointed. I like to feel, smell and try on clothing before purchasing it. And reading the care label. Also, so many online companies do not indicate where the garment is made which really annoys me. Good on you!

      It’s not nearly as difficult as you might imagine. Especially today, where you have CZcams videos and sewalongs and stuff...so basically a virtual classroom instead of just books with cryptic instructions.
      Of course it depends, on what you’re going to make...a skirt, simple shirt or sleeveless dress is easiest. Pants are a little more difficult. Adding details like pockets, closures, sleeves and collars adds difficulty and is more time consuming.
      I would say, that you can become reasonably accomplished in just a couple months, if you put your mind to it and actually look up and follow tutorials to improve your skills.
      I‘m completely self taught myself...and that was back when there were no resources but books. It’s a lot of fun and very satisfying 🙂

    I lived in China for two years, and came across many of the same issues that you mention in your video in clothing I purchased there. Sleeves too short & too narrow, busts too tight, extremely short-waisted clothing, etc. I think this is because of the market for which the clothing is prepared. Chinese women tend to be (though not always!) quite petite, thin arms, short waisted, etc. However, non-Asian bodies do not typically fit this profile. My suspicion would be that Asos clothing is either made in China, or used clothing originally made for the Chinese market. Also, I really appreciate your videos, Justine! So informative ☺️

      I've worked for and with producers for ASOS in Bulgaria and UK. They screw the price down to the last cent. In terms of fit and sizing, they have strict tolerances, BUT, their sizing charts are designed to use the minimum amount of fabric. Then there is the fabric. I don't think I've ever been able to use a fabric more than €4/m (we are talking dresses and swimwear). In terms of the 'sequin' top. This would be machine produced fabric on a roll from China, but possibly produced in another factory. It looked so bad, like a mesh top with a few sequins sewn on. They buy in volume to produce in volume. Much of what you are commenting on, is not down to the factory, but ASOS' own buyers and design team. They want the fit, but aren't willing to pay for the fabric cost to make it fit correctly. Endless fit sessions and approval seals, and the buyers are trying to shave 2 cents off here, another cent off there. It is crazy, and a no win situation for producers n terms of development (We like this €16 top you produce wholesale, can we get it for €4?). However, in my experience, the staff are all treated well, paid local average or above wage and the big orders from ASOS mean the factories can produce garments with newer or better machines, better facilities for the workers and often the tight deadlines mean lots of overtime for them too. I hope this helps.

      I've bought a few items from their "Curve"(plus size) line and even at 5'4" I find that the waistband always falls right under my bust even though the photos show a waist at normal waist height. For some reason this brand designs even plus size clothing for women who have no chest. It's a pity because I did like some of the heavy fabric for winter dresses.

    I thought ASOS was a legit, high-quality brand up until I received clothes from them. I ordered a ruffle top that looked thick and flowy with several layers of fabric....what I received was three thin strips sewn onto a cheap mesh with uneven sleeve ruffles. The long-sleeved crop top I ordered was the thinnest material I've ever felt, too. You can see the model's pasties through the fabric.
    I thought it was kind of suspicious that ASOS doesn't allow you to leave reviews on their products. Their clothes are so cheap and low quality!

      Uniqlo does not represent that it is not fast fashion, but they do have much more control over the factories that produce their garments. Taking a look at Uniqlo products, it's clear they are minimizing costs in every way possible, but some of the construction techniques are interesting too (for those interested in that).

    question is, who can afford non fast fashion items? Seriously asking you. And in a lot of cases private 'boutiques' will offer the same cheap quality Chinese mass produced clothes, just priced even higher. I can't afford to pay 300 euros for a top or 400 euros for a dress. At this part of Europe, a lot of people earn around 600 euros A MONTH.

      Don't know which part of Europe you are in, but I live in Hungary, wages are similar here and not many decent clothing stores. I often buy great quality items in second hand stores. Try not to buy famous brands. Go to shop that sell various items that are non branded. In Portugal we have a lot of textil factories that sell to those shops part of the production . The rest is exported to other countries, where they just put brand tags on it and are sold for ridiculous amounts of money.

      On etsy you can find Taylors from other countries with lower living costs so you can find pants for 70€ there.
      For basics I go to stores that market to whole families. Their customers tend to be more critical of fabrics AMD want to wear the garments for more than one season so even if it's not High quality it's usually a lot more decent than any trendy Brand.

    Interesting video, I'd like to see the same kind of analysis on ethical brands, since the pricetag can be quite high and I'd love to know if the quality would justify it.
    I'm a pear too. In tops I usually wear XS/S and L on the bottom. Anything but skater skirts usually don't fit me.
    With leggings I always go for the biggest size available, just to make sure the fabric doesn't have to stretch too much, so it won't become see-through.
    Also speaking of leggings, do you happen to know any ethically produced thick leggings that are suitable for German winter, I still have some Primark ones that will probably be fine next winter and maybe the one after that, but I eventually need something to replace them with.

    You can't expect great quality of polyester considering the price. ASOS have different lines, different price levels. I do purchase a lot on ASOS but I do rarely buy their clothes. The line I've tried was ASOS WHITE, the fabric - cashmere. Quality was one of the best on the market for the price, and the price was very reasonable. If your figure is beyond the standard you should consider the fact, that you'll have to adjust the item for the best personal fit.

    This was a very USEFUL video. I have already given up on buying on-line from any companies except LLBean and Lands End, and only their Tall sizes (and I am at least 2 inches shorter than you, Justine). Their clothes are not at all fashionable, but they are sturdy, well made, of good natural fabrics, and a bit expensive. I hope the extra expense translates into living wages for the garment workers, but that is very hard to know.
    When I want a more fashionable garment, I either sew it myself or go to Talbots. Even at Talbots, I can only buy separates because every dress is too short.

    The good thing about ASOS is that you can send everything back as it can be really hit or miss. I have ordered a bunch from their website, though a lot of the items where actually from other brands they retail. Still, I have a couple of favourites from their inhouse brand. Generally their knitted items are 'safer' in quality, two of my favourite jumpers are ASOS, also hoodies, t-shirts, socks and so on will rarely disappoint. But I also have a winter coat that I really love from ASOS white, which is more of a premium line I guess. One of my favourite skirts is ASOS too, and a blazer in a boyfriend cut that as far as I can tell has no quality issues at all. Of course Justine challenged the brand by testing some more 'complicated' items as that is where quality issues and bad tailoring will become most visible. That makes complete sense, but you can still find some very decent clothes at ASOS if you know what to avoid, namely clothes that simply need a higher level of tailoring to be good.

    Great video! I think we are starting to forget how clothes should look and feel. Fast fashion immersion is making us expect poorly made and poorly fitting clothes.

    Yuk! You are definitely not an ASOS girl Justine!! Me either! From what I've seen it's ok for poor uni students who wear big coats or skinny minis who look good in anything! Here in Australia I feel we are all getting fed up with cheap Chinese junk like ASOS stuff and there is a definite trend with youngsters buying heaps of stuff in op shops or vintage shops!! I have a friend who is in tv (wardrobe) she trawls the vintage and second hand shops for good labels and takes them home to redesign! You'd never guess!!
    I love your videos! Thank you so much! It's my Sunday night treat and I really look forward to it!! xx

      ashestoyoursoul poorly fitted clothes don't look good on anyone, but being skinny does make people think you look better in almost anything. I personally don't like "street fashion", and think most of it is ugly. Skinny girls wearing it are always heralded as fashion icons, but most of these looks don't look good on bigger people (tbh anyone who isn't built like a model) and a fat girl would be called dumpy and unprofessional wearing it.
      Not attacking you, but size definitely impacts availability of clothes that fit you and how people think clothes look on you

    Thank you for exposing ASOS. I follow a few fashion blogs and they mostly are women buying 'fast fashion' which they profess are wonderful. To my eyes, the pieces they display look cheap: fabrics are thin, and the finish simply isn't there. It's dreadful.

    • @MZB80
      @MZB80 Před 5 lety +5

      Yes, I hate 'fast fashion' because the only way to get it is by exploiting people - not ethical at all.

    It makes me really happy seeing you, a super slim woman, ordering hip sizes a size or two bigger because I'm exactly the same and I can get really self conscious about having to get a 14 (sometimes 16) in bottoms when I'm a 12 (sometimes 10) in tops. Love your videos

    You have such a great figure and all of these clothes were so unflattering! We often blame our bodies for not looking attractive in the clothes we try on instead of looking at how well the item is tailored. Great video, more like this, please ☺️

    nunca dejo de aprender, me siento bendecida por haber encontrado tu canal, soy mas consciente de lo visto, de como limpiar una prenda de vestir, de decirme a mi misma "lo vas a usar? es buen material? es atemporal? esta prenda es de tu estilo personal? esta joya de fantasia vale la pena o solo es tendencia y por eso la vas a comprar? tu canal en general me hizo ser mas consciente de si mi ropa esta mancha con dolor o sangre porque al terciarizar su produccion el que hizo mi prenda fue pagado con migajas.... gracias justine. sigue adelante

      COS is an H&M brand. So absolutely fast fashion and probably have their clothes all made in China or Bangladesh.

    As a plus size woman it is really difficult to find clothes that are fashionable and affordable, ASOS is one of the few shops which caters to this need. I think most people would buy better quality clothing that fit if they could afford it (or if it was made; plus size clothing is normally overpriced and poor quality)
    I agree with your points made but I think it is important to recognise that not everyone has the luxury of being able to afford better quality garments or being able to buy them even if they have the money, in the case of plus size people.

    • @lindatisue733
      @lindatisue733 Před 5 lety +24

      I would pay more for better quality, but it is just not available. Eventhough it is more expensive, I've learned to sew so I don't have to wear polyester sacks.

    • @florenceEMwatson
      @florenceEMwatson Před 5 lety +32

      I totally agree Linda, I would too! In an ideal world, I would love to make my own clothes but I just don't have the time (or skill hahaha).
      I think plus size people are often left out this type of conversation because people do not understand how challenging it can be to even get clothes that fit, let alone those that are ethically sourced.
      Price point and availability I think should have been referenced in this video because lots of people might agree with the politics but shop at places like ASOS out of necessity, not choice.
