  • Which designer handbags are worth the money and are good investment pieces? Great question. Some designer bags hold their value, some increase in value, some are even worth more second-hand than new! I listed 10 timeless handbags of high quality, which you can invest in and wear 10 or 20 years, without them getting out of trend.
Thumbs up if you liked this video :-)

Note: check the size you are purchasing! A small “special edition” can be more expensive than a bigger “classic edition”. The material has more impact on the price than the size of the bag ;-)
Note 2: when shopping for luxury bags, remember to always check that you are buying a “real” bag and not a counterfeited one. Buy on verified, trustworthy websites!

I went to Paris with friends in 2007. One wanted a specific Dior bag she'd spotted in Vogue, so off to a Dior boutique we went. She showed the magazine page and asked for the bag; what happened next still amazes me. Salesclerks look at each other, and call over the department head. She spent several minutes questioning my friend about what her daily routine was, what she normally carried in her bag, what the weather was like where we lived, and what colors she normally wore. Department head then sends off salesclerks who return with the bag my friend wanted and two others, then spends about 20 minutes explaining why one of the other bags would be best for her. Turns out it cost less too. Instead of focusing on the sale, she focused on the customer and taught us to determine what looked and worked best for us. I became a Dior fan that day.

I find luxury bags utterly distasteful... it robs you of individuality and reduces you to nothing but advertisement for the tacky brand and products. Also extremely overpriced for what it is. You don't buy prestige and status anyway. You earn it by treating sentient beings well. If someone is having a luxury bag I run in the opposite direction. Owning one is a good sign that the person lacks intelligence and critical thinking skills.

@@lepetitchat123 you sound suicidal, those luxury bag are not different than luxury watches for men, they are signs of accomplishment and daily reminder of your personal success, the psychological effect is very powerful, you have no idea and they are also lifetime item since they are made to withstand the test of time not only in their build quality but also in their design itself. this has nothing to do with intelligence or critical thinking but all to do with emotion and intrinsic value of a given thing

    • @platosfriend
      @platosfriend Před 4 lety +114

It’s not like Hermes do it for ethics 😄 They keep it that exclusive and unreachable so that people who afford it go the extra mile to get it. It’s not like normal people can even afford to get close to it anyway.

@@lazyhomebody1356 that price you'd be paying is for the status of the brand, it's not like that 6000 is anywhere near what it'd take to make the bag, unless they're embezzled in gold and diamonds. For me personally I do not like to buy and handbag or any luxury item for that matter that clearly has the identifying logo on it. For example I prefer the classic version of the Chanel flap because it doesn't have the inverted C's logo. For me any kind of logo or large monogram seems to cheapen the look of it in my eyes. My opinion stretches especially for branded T-shirts like the Gucci logo styles that seem to have spread these days. A piece with no obvious or large logo is much more sophisticated and classic to me.

    • @chajang7292
      @chajang7292 Před 4 lety +18

I cannot agree more. I was tAlkig to a friend who loves LV and recently got a wallet. There was honestly no worthwhile design element, the leather was just indented with the monogram all over... That's it. I spent the longest time on looking for a Longchamp backpack, and I settled for one that had the smallest Longchamp title on it,and there was no logo on the front of the back (part of the foulonné line, so it doesn't even have the iconic flap, and the zippers don't even have logos lol. I purely got it for its quality, and if someone really wanted to know where it's from, they'd have to get super close, hah). Also, my first lux wallet was from Valentino which I respect because people can recognize it from a design element itself (the rock studs), rather than a logo or the name spelt largely. I am interested in getting a Celine or Hermes product because it also shares that idea. But Hermes is just a dream right now haha. Céline is classy, and very wearable for work.

Amanda H, the difference is the designer bags are handmade in limited quantities. It’s not made by people earning slave wages in a sweat shop. That’s why I used to love the Coach bags that used to be made in New York. They were expensive for me at the time, but they were well made, timeless and practical. I still have one from the ‘80s. You can buy them as vintage bags for very reasonable prices on EBay now.

But, your comment could be used to illustrate the issue. L.A. is also a very wealthy area, with women who pay 5 or 10,000 dollars for a handbag. And, that could pay rent for a homeless person for a year. It's all a matter of priorities.

When I was a little girl my mother had a companion woman in her eighties who carried a red crocodile Kelly as as a rule, she gave me a bag to carry my seashell and rock collection in...she told me the name which slipped my mind beyond Hermes and after I spilled apple cider on it I gave it back feeling like I had ruined a nice gift, she offered to get it cleaned but as a ten year old I thought I didn’t need a purse and really just wanted a fanny pack 🤦🏻‍♀️
Ten years later at age 21 I recognized the same bag in the arms of a woman in New York, I had a pang of nostalgia and immediately realized what I had forsaken so I asked what her Hermes was called since BIRKIN had slipped my mind over the years...oh how she laughed and said honey, you can’t have a birkin just like that! I was devastated and am currently at age 41 searching for a similar bag to the one I had as a kid. This is such an example of how the very wealthy live 😩😩😩
Who just gives a ten year old a birkin to carry ROCKS in?!?
Jane, thats who her name ironically was Jane and though she gave it to me I GAVE IT BACK.
Truthfully I miss it because of the memories and even as a child I recognized the quality.
I’d never sell it, I’d do anything to have that thing back, it was truly perfect, not tacky, the texture was supple, and it carried rocks and shells without any creasing or damage.

The idea of handbag as investment is intriguing. The analogy is not exact, but like stocks, I won't buy the very highest price stock but will look for one the holds its value and has a great return in usage saving money over the long run. My favorite is Brahmin, I like leather, texture, color variation, versatility, internal pockets zipped and unzipped, handles that work for the hand or shoulder. Small cross body versions are great as well when hands need to be free and bags safe.

    Hi Justine!
I'm not much into fashion because don't find it a necessary since I'm more of a practical one.Until I accidentally watched a video of yours and got me hooked in your content. You got me everytime you talk about how a piece came to be and why things has to look in a certain ways and so.Clearly, you change my views about fashion itself.
And about you question,I' m sure every brand, from an established classic to rookie one, strives to comply to what people needed.Authenticityis a must, but at this point I look for a bag that doesn't demand much of maintenance because at the end of the day, bags should be helping you and not giving you stress.
I love how pasionate you are and your views are the content that I subscribed for.Looking forward fot more vids like these in the future!

They aren’t. I have a long post somewhere where I show why they are not. Even if you hold a birkin and wait for it to appreciate in value, the returns are horrible with the exception of incredibly rare pieces. They are illiquid, depreciating assets that don’t even pay income. Bags are largely sunk costs and if you don’t believe me, check the second had market for Hermes. Celine bags even have worse resale value. You’d need to buy a crocodile or ostrich limited edition birkin and hold it without wearing it to even gain some form of return and if you legitimately take in the taxes, sales costs, etc. You will rarely find a bag that is an investment. The word “investment” in terms of bags is misleading garbage.

What I look for in a purse:
One I can open mostly with one hand while I am wearing it.
One I can see clearly inside, lighter fabric.
    More than one season.
    Ages well, not trendy.
Color that goes well with most things.
Style that goes with my clothes/style.
Pockets or/and barriers, not a big jumble that I am searching through.
Not too heavy or with too much hardwear.

You expressed it very well. That Kelly bag is so impractical to open or close.I've had many bags that meet the criteria you just described but they were "not" slouchy nothings. Many local designers make smart and practical bags -made of leather - that's worth exploring. And they don't cost an arm and a leg.

Jeffree Star is an excellent business person. He knows how to invest his money. Perhaps this comes from his poor background, as in, maybe one may need a back up? I feel his collection of bags to be an investment, as his real estate purchases. He keeps his bags in a vault because he has recognized, and has stated their value over time. I salute him as a business person, and I love his personality. He is most certainly, one to learn from, in more ways than one. Love how he says, Pray, Jesus take the wheel, and pray for me. The holy grail of bags for me it would be definitely a kelly, probably in black, because I can't imagine anything more timeless than that and besides its such an elegant bag.
When I buy a bag I want it to be light, that the straps are comfortable. It's also great if it has at least one external pocket. I also like that the bag is not extremely big so it is not annoying to carry it around public transport or to put it in front of me when I eat at places where I can't have an extra chair for it.

I never gave a second thought to handbags until i kept getting grief from a coworker. I went to a sale a couldn't believe i was actually debating on whether or not to buy a $250. Coach bag. My daughter and I saved a baby duckling that was stuck in some leaves and algae after the waters receded from a flood. We later went to a Dooney and Bourke outlet store and paid $200 for each bag. Not as high quality as the ones you're referring to but our stories and the stories you shared brought me to this conclusion; how lucky are we that we as women can have such amazing and diverse yet still similar "right of passage" as the purchase of our first quality handbag. I love this!!! I have the most deep, thoughtful grin on my face.
