I think M Shadows has had vocal problems since early on, he used to growl A LOT on Avenged Sevenfold's first two albums and right around the time he stopped growling he got vocal surgery. His voice sounds great when he's singing now but maybe he wasn't growling in a healthy way back then and it's still affecting him now? Anyway great video, A7X was one of my favorite bands back in the day and it was cool to revisit them. Also while I'm here I might as well throw in a request for "Oathbreaker - 10:56 / Second Son Of R" on Audiotree Live, their vocalist has an extremely unique vocal style.

@@mastertij975 Did you miss The Stage and Mad Hatter? He sounds phenomenal. As Beth said, when you're pushing your voice to the extreme (using heavy distortion and at the limit of his range) and putting it to constant use (recording a full 11 track, 73 minute album, and touring non-stop for about 3 years, and practising for 2 hours a day every day in between all of this), it's going to take it's toll. Having to cancel the tour doesn't mean he didn't sound great up until that point. And since the cancellation, he has stated that hes' recovering well.

I am extremely nit-picky, and very protective of the "elite" metal bands, and I have to say that A7X (with the Rev, RIP) is one of the truly great metal bands in all of history. They are absolutely on the level of, if not a higher level than, Metallica in their prime. Every single aspect of their musicianship is other-worldly. They are SO underrated for what reason I can't tell. RIP the Rev, the best I've ever heard, going back to Led Zeppelin and the Doors.

A lot of what hes doing is fry singing where he forces a lot of air much like screaming only with tones and not quite to the point of a scream, it was like 8+ years after this before he had real issues too. The reason for the vocal issues comes from trying to put in 100% grit and super loud volume that his style takes for 90+ minutes EVERY SINGLE night. He has a really good vocal coach he works with a ton and still has had issues due to how insanely long he does it with so much grit and volume
