I used to think storage was just about how much you could store on a hard drive. It turns out I was completely wrong. Everything from download speeds and game loading times, this information really helped me understand.

@6:28 -- Those speeds are deceptive.
@7:39 -- Large file copies -- well, "large" is subjective. 1 GB? 10 GB? 100 GB? 1 TB? What is large?
Chia plots are just over 100 GB. Larger ones, such as a K36 option, will be just shy of 2 TB.
All of the drives in this video are consumer level drives. The SN850X is a high-end consumer level drive. With that said...
Almost without exception, all consumer level drives will slow down (for many, dramatically slow down) when enough gigabytes of data are written to it non stop.
That is because SSDs are sort of a Frankenstein combination of NAND storage cells.
Although it differs from model to model, approximately 10% of the drive will hit (or come close) to the rated speed. The rest of the drive could be as slow at 25 MB/s. Or, it might slow down to 100 MB/s. The point is, approximately 90% of the drive has comparatively slow NAND cells. But the box shows only the speed of the fastest 10% of the drive. However, 99.99% of consumers will never see the slower speeds.
What has to happen to experience the slow down, and why does the drive slow down?
NAND cells come in 4 varieties. From fastest to slowest:
    SLC -- single level cells.
MLC -- multi (or dual) layer cells.
    TLC -- triple level cells.
    QLC -- quadruple level cells.
What manufacturers do is use, perhaps, MLC NAND cells (for a high-end drive) for 10% of the drive, and TLC or QLC for the rest of the drive.
When you write data to the drive, the drive's controller will always direct the data to whatever fast NAND cells are available. Hence, the fast speeds you see.
Then, when the drive is not busy (which is most of the time), it transfers the data to its slower NAND cells (you will not see that -- it is programmed into the drive's controller).
So since 10% of the drive will be 50+ GB of fast NAND cells (depending on the drive's capacity and the manufacturer's design choices, which vary all over the map), you will probably always see the fast speed. Typical use will always have enough idle time for the drive to free up its fast NAND cells.
But if you write enough GBs to the drive, without rest, you will fill up 100% of the fast NAND cells, leaving the drive's controller no choice but to write the rest of the non-stop data to the rest of the drive (which has much slower NAND cells).
Run a benchmark, but don't use the typical 1 GB of data for the test.
Use 100 GB. When you wake up the next day, you will likely see abysmal speed results.
Why don't manufacturers just make the entire drive fast?
Well, they do, for Enterprise / Data Center level drives (typically in the U.2 form factor). But using SLC NAND cells for 100% of the drive will break the bank. Whereas those QLC NAND cells are inexpensive. And since 99.99% of consumers will never notice, that is why these consumer level drives are designed as such.
The SN850X will have the least noticeable performance hit, if you happen to hit its slower NAND cells. It will still be pretty fast.
But the other two drives will probably take a big dive (not sure -- but that is why they cost less).
If you are not writing 25+ GB of data non-stop, then none of the above matters.
Also, a lot of focus is on the sequential read speed. That is fine, for large file copies.
But when you run Crystal Disk's benchmarking tool, look at the lower 3 rows. They will tell you how fast the drive is at handling countless small files, simultaneously. They will tell you how fast your PC will boot up (because that is when the SSD is being hit with countless file read and write requests, for files of all sizes).
Look at those lower 3 rows, and do the same benchmark test on a mechanical drive. The NVMe drive will be light-years faster. That is why SSDs (both SATA based and NVMe based) load Windows so fast. The top row has little to do with booting up. But any of the drives in this video will boot your computer very fast. You probably would not notice a difference among them.
@14:03 -- "But it does look cool."
I beg to differ. I would not have RGB lighting in my computer, any more than I would have RRB lighting in my refrigerator or my couch. Perhaps if I were 8 years old, I would like it. To each his own.

WD Black storage drives are fantastic as are their others such as Blue, which are nothing short of great themselves regardless of this video being sponsored by them and Newegg. Plus, we all here out of all places don't need to be reminded that competition exists to not only for digital storage, but also marketplaces too. SanDisk or Samsung and BestBuy or Amazon come to mind
When Robey begins to shill for new no name PC component companies and suspicious retailers, then you can mald

I got the WD Black SN850x 2TB (to go with my intel i7-11700K and Asus Z590-A Gaming MB) a couple weeks ago when it dropped from $289.99 to $199.00 for like 1 day. Pretty decent deal I think for such a new ssd.

  • @HowieMilguy40
    @HowieMilguy40 Před rokem

First off thank you for the information in this one. I am wondering about the motherboards that have the nvme enclosures that are next to the ram dimm slots. Do they have better performance? I am getting ready for my first build and have been doing A LOT of research on different components and am looking for a build that will be for me and my wife. I am going into eSports like iracing while my wife wants to record audio books. I'm getting ready to retire from the army national guard and being disabled this is something that I can do. So any recommendations are welcome. I love the 5000t as a case and want to go 1000w power supply, that is about as far as I have come. What are your thoughts about the gen 5 nvme's coming out? Anyway thank you for the videos that you have been pushing out and the education that you are providing.

WD Black vs Seagate FireCUDA...who has the edge?

WD has cost for performance, FireCUDA is awesome speed plus endurance.

check prices, if the firecuda has the same pricetag or close, go for it, here the SN 850X is around 30usd cheaper but for 30usd more i get the same storage capacity with better speeds and thrice the lifespan, which is a lot better for futureproofing, especially with ssd's

PCI-E Gen 5 SSDs for Z690/X670 and above are just launching this fall, but from what I’ve read, the first controllers are nowhere near as fast as two Gen 4 SSDs in RAID 0.

It honestly really doesn’t matter if it’s a pcie gen 3, 4 or 5 when those come out. They will all perform pretty similar when it comes to boot times. Though at this moment in time I would recommend really any of the highly rated gen 4 drives that is priced competitively. They all will be pretty similar.
