  • Many of the world's SUVs roots can be traced back to the Jeep Cherokee, a staple in the off-roading community and so much more. How will it do on our timed mountainous rally stage here at Team O'Neil?

    Fantastic! I miss my Xj, 12 years of ownership, twice on the rubicon, great rig. Might I suggest a 2002- 2004 WJ Grand Cherokee Overland? 4.7HO engine makes great torque, and the Quadra drive system is magic in snow. Mechanically otherwise very similar to the Xj. Cheers!

    Currently own a '94 ZJ Grand Cherokee and I've always been surprised at how capable it is when pushed a little bit on gravel and snow. The Quadra-Trac AWD system they used for the Grand Cherokee is slightly rear-biased so it's a bit more fun to drift with than the Command-Trac in the XJ. Awesome to see a Jeep being rallied like that, great video!

    They sure will... even though Im a die-hard Toyota guy I still think one of the most fun rigs I've ever had was a 98 4.0L XJ Upcountry on 32s. Up here in the PNW with the full-time 4wd mode in the Tcase that thing was SO fun. I chased down a group of Subaru WRXs in a snow storm on Mt Hood and just cruised up and over the pass at 65+ in 15° and snowing weather. I prefer my 06 Tundra as a DD and general vehicle and my 4Runners are MUCH better trail rigs but rhe XJ was a fun truck and it was my Dads so it held sentimental value as well. Awesome video.

      Depends on transfer case, they cane with 2 or 3 variants

    • @blairwill7732
      @blairwill7732 Před 2 měsíci +5

      I don't understand that either. He's driving a later XJ and maybe they all came with the NP242 transfer case that had a "full time" AWD setting and center differential (maybe a viscous coupler). The standard tcase, Command-trac NP231, locked both front and rear driveshafts together, no slop. For many years I had a heavily modified XJ built into a rockcrawler/trail jeep, lots of suspension, 35" tires, but still streetable (not a buggy) and what kills these things is the unibody cracking. Maybe not an issue with rally use, but if you twist it in the rocks, or hammer desert washboard, the unibody will develop cracks at the top of the A pillar, B pillar and around the hatch opening. If you know you are going to put an XJ to hard use it would be much better to beef it up before it cracks: cage it, sister the un rails with some box sections, rocker skids, stout bumpers Fr&Rear, etc. Having to do all that is a negative aspect of the unibody. The positive is that because there is no movement between a body and separate frame you can tie all this reinforcement together and make the truck very stiff. Bolt the cage to the roof, tie the cage feet through the floor to the reinforced un rails and the rocker skid outriggers, etc.

    • @padrescout
      @padrescout Před 2 měsíci

      @@mblake0420 There were 2 per generation? Whatever, mid-90s facelift.. For the post 90 whatever machines - the base one was a NP231, and the optional NP242. The base transfer case was generally considered the one to have, but the NP 242 had an all-wheel drive mode with clutch packs to allow some slip so you could drive it on dry stuff without worrying about lash destroying your drivetrain.

    • @mblake0420
      @mblake0420 Před 2 měsíci

      @@padrescout I believe you are 100 percent right on, I knew base number but couldn't remember the clutch pack number

    • @padrescout
      @padrescout Před 2 měsíci

      @@mblake0420 Now the part number for the serviceable parts I do not know. My XJ had the NP242 in it, I looked into doing a slip-yoke conversion for a suspension lift and never could find much on it beyond "The NP 242 has got a slightly beefier internal chain, which is good. Parts availability is remarkable worse than on the NP 231, and no slip-yoke for you!" I kind of shrugged, and went with a 2 inch lift I didn't need a slip-yoke to execute cleanly... worked out long-term.
