      @@jeffbachman2949 Can you name 3 scenes that they "came up with" that were so great? I think we can all agree that the first 4 seasons were brilliant. But that was almost entirely because they followed the books relatively faithfully, leaving a lot out. But the major characters and plots they did tackle were all very well done.
      It started going down hill with s5 and got worse every season after that. The moment they stopped adapting the books (which still had tons of content, much of which they had skipped) the show went to sh. S5 to S8 showed how incredibly bad D&D are as writers and creatives.
      Moreover, as far as I know, they filmed the first few episodes of s1 (got) and it was so absurdly bad and negatively received, that they had to restart from scratch. After s4 and the incredible success of GoT they started a rush to get to the end, so they could use their new found success and fame to make "bigger things". Like the star wars movies they thought they were going to make after they ruined GoT. If they were faithfully adapting three body problem I might have had some faith. But they very clearly are not. If they were great writers, I might have had a lot of faith. Since the books, despite all the hype, are actually really bad when it comes to characters, the story, the prose etc etc. What makes the book good is the sci fi. Even the writer says he doesn't really care about characters they are just there so he can share his sci fi ideas. So anyone who can take those ideas, and weave them into a more compelling narative with more compelling characters, I'd really appreciate. That's not D&D.

    I dislike that they converted most of the heroic figures (save 2 - one of whom isn’t even significant until much later and both seem to no longer be actual Chinese nationals) to non-Chinese while leaving the villain Chinese. Ye Wenjie must 100% be Chinese for her story, so not saying they should have changed her.
    It does make sense to internationalize the cast since it’s a global story - but instead of making them international task force, they seem to be going ethnically (semi)diverse but all UK nationals: the “Oxford 5”. Based on comments by Benedict Wong, even Da Shi will likely be a Brit. And as much as I love Da Shi he’s a secondary character especially after Book 1.
    Among the cast that contains all the eventual protagonists -including by far the most traditionally heroic Luo Ji - only 1 remains Asian. And she arguably is the biggest failure of all the main protagonists to the point where she is almost history’s greatest liability through sheer incompetence. Between the choice of her and Ye Wenjie it almost takes a Chinese story and turns it into a “China bad, they destroyed the world” but thank god for the West story.
    Hopefully they *at least* make the task force and the general that heads it Chinese because they are at least seen as leading the solution. I ‘m not a Chinese national nor a fan of the CCP, so wouldn’t care but it seems kind of disrespectful even if Cixin Liu was fine because it’s like making a story of Mulan but turning her into Joan of Arc yet having her still fighting barbaric Mongols. It feels like chauvinism to take a Chinese author’s work and turn it into a West saves the World (again) narrative.
    Also, as a symptom of this: Sophon can appear as anything and chooses Japanese aesthetics - so why would she create a non-Japanese avatar to appear doing Shogun-era cosplay. Like she chose the “blonde wearing a chongsam” vibe on purpose?
    It really does reek of the assumption the audience can’t care about Asian protagonists and not being able to resist telling their stories without totally appropriation. An assumption that is being proven consistently wrong, btw.
    I am sympathetic to introducing characters in an Oxford 5 styke group in season 1 that become important later as an adaptation choice, because it prevents each season introducing new protagonists and simply switches whose plotline you foreground and background each season - a structure that works much better for serialized tv to create continuity.

      @@roadtotarvalon I found the Tencent version good, but it’s pacing means it’s not recommendable unless one is a hard-core sci-fi enthusiast. And it’s subtitled and not available on the main streaming platforms here.
      The new series looks like it has potential and I’m looking forward to it. And I’ve read the book so I can appreciate the series as it’s own thing (if good)…
      My issue isn’t for my personal viewing pleasure.
      But the Netflix version in English will be what western audiences will know of Cixin Liu’s work. And it seems to be going out of it’s way to erase the cultural identity of the creator and his creation (except in the case of humanity’s ultimate traitor ofc) to the point where I’m confident the audience will never know this was an Asian work. And I know Cixin Liu doesn’t care (maybe because of the Tencent ver and as a mainlander likely doesn’t care about it’s perception here).
      I can enjoy it without the the ethnicity bothering me (I’m Asian American so of course am used to happily consuming media with people who don’t share my ethnicity). But there is an issue for me if this erasure goes the Avatar movie route where all the Asian heroes are whitewashed but all the villains magically remain brown.
      It’s the Tom Cruise is the Last Samurai, Matt Damon is the savior of the Great Wall, Major Kusanagi is Scarlett Johanssen, Emma Stone in Aloha etc. route.
      I actually think this comes from an insulting assumption of the Western audience by D&D: that unlike the rest of the world they can’t relate to an ethnicity or culture that isn’t theirs. Particularly since this has been proven wrong on Netflix itself: Asian POV series Squid Game.
      The result of this mentality by Hollywood is U.S. general audiences have very little awareness of what media, music, stories and literature exists outside our shores (we’re probably the most unaware in the world in this respect).
      I like the idea of globalizing the story, but feel that shouldn’t be the same as completely replacing its Chinese identity.

      @@Ian-MT I understand your frustration. I think one of the major issues at play here is that Netflix isn't available in China therefore the need to broaden it to appeal to a global audience is what they are going for.

      @roadtotarvalon “But keep in mind they have casted actors with Nigerian, Chinese, New Zealand, Japanese / Hawaiian, Mexican, British, Australian, and American decent.”
      Which makes it all the more insulting that they couldn’t have cast Chinese-American or British actors who speak both languages at least somewhat fluently. This is really not a stretch in my opinion. If it isn’t about being afraid that people can’t relate to different cultures, as you’re saying, then it’s specifically because they do not want to keep an extremely Chinese story true to its origins.
      The first novel especially, among all of them, is written with a Chinese sensibility and is very grounded in both the politics of China past and present, as well as present-day Chinese sensibilities. Of all the seasons they chose to replace the Chinese actors with, this first book is probably the worst one. And I can’t even imagine them trying to adapt more than one book in an 8-episode season.
      Overall I feel pretty insulted, but I think D&D are just like that. GoT proved that they love their egos more than they respect any single franchise. They want to do cool things and make shows that look and feel cool, and fuck the source material if the source material doesn’t serve those ends.

    • @talisa222
      @talisa222 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @roadtotarvalon
      It’s insulting in itself that the creators and producers of this show think that a Chinese story with all Chinese actors could never appeal to a non-Chinese audience. People love good quality media. Many people didn’t like or care about X thing until somebody made an incredible film and people thought, “Wow. X thing is actually not bad. It’s quite cool.”
      Trying to craft a casting around what you perceive is the broadest audience is probably the worst jumping off point ever, if you’re a creative. Your desire should be able to create great and interesting things. You shouldn’t be thinking primarily of audience-pleasing at every turn. What an inauthentic and also insubstantial way to approach art and media.

    I will keep an open mind, but I don't like the changes. This story takes place during a long expand of time, and it seems that they want to shorten the timeline quite a bit which cab make the plot very unrealistic, all so that they can avoid the need for recasting characters.

    • @roadtotarvalon
      @roadtotarvalon  Před 4 měsíci +1

      It might seem that way but if you look at the timeline chronologically, Luo Ji would have born around 1979, Yang Dong around 1980, Cheng Xin around 1986. Luo Ji is a professor of sociology in 2007 when Yang Dong dies. Cheng would probably be finishing up university at that time, as would Yun Tianming and Wang Miao would be working on Flying Blade. It seems the show is just showing events chronologically.
