Even if you order in the evening and get your food delivered in the morning, refrigerators are getting bigger and bigger, and more and more people are buying two or buying a big freezer because it's not enough. Koreans make GREAT aircraft. FA-50 has 75 percent capabilities of Gripen but ONLY 30 percent of it's price. A Philipine FA-50 shot down an F-22 raptor in war games months ago. And new FA-50 block 20 will be even better. Now, this Boramae is the next level in Korean aerospace and will feature 6th generation technologies when fully developed like lasers, loyal wingman drones, etc. It's simply a much modern fighter that eventualy will surpass the Gripen. And Koreans will make sure it's price never gets to high unlike other competitors. They really know how to be cost effective. That is why they have become the world 6th biggest arms exporter. High quality with technology transfer and afforfable prices.

I am a South Korean. FA-50 "shot down" F-22 with almost all of F-22's sensors disabled... So it was not a 'fair' match.
Still, as you said, FA-50 is a good piece for its cost.... Its origin is the only supersonic trainer in the world, T-50. It can fly at 1,838 km/hour at altitude (where the speed of sound is about 280 m/sec). At altitude, the max speed is Mach 1.71. Still South Koreans say "Mach 1.5" because they divide the at-altitude speed with the sea-level sound speed (340 m/sec). They play low-profile.
With FA-50, you can use all the full-fledged training environment (simulator and so on), making FA-50 a trainer. FA-50's interface is very similar to F-16 and to some extent, to F-35. You can have best pilots for these 'expensive' fighters. A South Korean pilot belly -landed a F-35 when almost all of the functionalities (including the supply of breathing air) were cut off by a giant eagle sucked into the engine. czcams.com/users/results?search_query=f-35+belly+land
And you can share more than 60% of FA-50's parts with those of F-16, since Lockheed Martin (the F-16 developer) was the co-developer of FA-50.
However FA-50 is very small, and has a very definite limit on modification. For example, there is not much merit in upgrading the current engine (F-404-GE) to a more powerful one (F-414-GE, which Gripen is using).
Sooner or later, South Koreans will bump into the question "Do we need to develop a more powerful, a F-16-size 5th generation fighter?"
      FA-50 dry thrust 11,000 lbf.
      F-16 dry thrust 17,155 (F-16C Block 50 and 52)
KF-21 dry thrust 26,000 (I presume the later version's dry thrust can go up to 31,000 )
South Korea is one of a few countries committed to developing high-end UAVs ... unmanned stealth fighters and unmanned stealth ISRC2 flying-wings. This is NOT a matter of national pride/ego. This is for them an existential project, since their final foe is China. And because high-end UAVs and their parts (including engines, radars, sensors and missiles) are NOT to be exported-imported ..thanks to Missile Technology Control Regime(MTCR).
If they choose to develop a F-16 size unmanned fighter (Collaborative Combat Aircraft, CCA, by the US terminology), they will defintely come out with a manned variant.

This Korean aircraft has room to be a more advanced one soon. Basically, this jet fighter was developed as a 4.5 th gen aircraft but the developer KAI has an option to reach a 6th gen aircraft. Thus, a few pro-America Islamic states like Saudi, UAE, and Qatar wanted to open a meeting with the developer since they couldn't have a chance to purchase the US's F-35 through Israel's request. Particularly, Saudi had a negotiation meeting with the developer KAI recently, and the two sides have finished basic conclusions.
According to the related news, the developer KAI will make this jet fighter a 6th-gen aircraft within 5 years. So, the purchaser Saudi decided to join this project to obtain stealth jet fighters. Without huge funds for the development of the newest aircraft, KAI couldn't have shown a blueprint for updating this jet fighter, to be honest. Saudi will deploy capable stealth jet fighters to defend its sky and territories in the end after 2-3 years. KAI has essential technologies to develop a flight machine and Saudi has big bucks to purchase the machine, so, it would become a win-win project for both sides.

The reason Korean weapons are cheap is not because of low product quality, but because they always pursue reasonable profits and expand demand in the global market. To disparage the KF-21, it is often evaluated as an American fighter or mostly American technology, but unfortunately, except for the engine and ejection seat of the KF-21, everything was developed by Korean companies. Korea developed a GaN-based AESA radar, and conducted tests in Israel as a more complete radar test facility was needed. Israeli officials showed interest in Korea's AESA radar and requested cooperation from Korean developers, but Korean developers refused. It does not matter whether South Korea acquired most of the technology needed for its fighter jets from the United States or developed it itself. What is important is that Korea has already been conducting research to secure fighter jet manufacturing capabilities since the early 1990s, and already has experience in developing the T-50 advanced trainer and FA-50 low-level fighter, as well as mass production infrastructure. What is the purpose of comparing a low-level fighter with one 414 engine and a mid-level fighter with two 414 engines? Is the KF-21 similar to the F-22? of course. Korean developers already had to choose between the C-103, an early version of the current KF-21, and the C-501, an early version of the current KF-21, 15 years ago. As Korea's president changed again, the development of fighter jets did not take place, and after 2015, the development of the KFX based on the C-103 configuration gained momentum. Developers immediately began wind tunnel experiments based on aerodynamics, and development of the AESA radar, IRST and eot-gp jammer has already begun. As expected by developers and the Korean government, the above four core technologies could not be transferred from Lockheed Martin due to an injunction from the U.S. State Department. However, the Korean government and developers had already anticipated the situation and was rushing development. The exterior design of the KF-21 was implemented mainly based on the instructions of Korean developers, and detailed advice was provided by Lockheed Martin experts. The KF-21 is a domestically produced fighter aircraft that Korea can develop, disassemble, assemble, modify, and upgrade. The development of 5th generation fighter aircraft is a series of hardships. There are skills that are more difficult than the core skills mentioned above. It is a technology that integrates flight control, avionics control, and each system. In particular, the difficulty of 5th generation fighter flight control source coding technology is unrivaled. It is calculated with a completely different code value than the existing F-16 or 4.5 generation fighter. Some military enthusiasts in Korea may know the story behind these developments. About 10 years from now, the KF-21 will be produced in small numbers of 5th generation stealth fighters and will soon embark on a long journey to become a 6th generation fighter. Graphene technology, one of the carbon materials to be applied to the 5th generation of the KF-21, is already the world's most advanced form and is showing results in Korea, and fighter exterior stealth technology using graphene material is also known to be in progress. The IRST that protrudes from the outside of the fighter will be embedded inside, and the cockpit glass will be coated in a new way. Please note that this is not a personal judgment and is based on an interview with the developer. And the KF-21 has very good engine power compared to the weight of the aircraft. This means it has an excellent thrust-to-weight ratio (44000 lbf). This is expected to soon lead to the installation of two-dimensional thrust deflection nozzles. The space in the rear exhaust nozzle area of the prototype has already been secured. I understand that research on the application of deflection nozzles has already been completed and is under development. One domestic defense company is in the process of developing a medium-sized 26,000 lbf engine by 2035, and another company has also announced engine development, so it is expected that the two companies' engines will compete in the future. The 5th generation KF-21 is likely to be equipped with two 26,000 lbf engines and produce 52,000 lbf.

You choose a newly fabricated fighter jet that the country producing it has zero experience operating it... both you and that country would be on experimental and theoretical grounds for much of the life time of your purchased aircraft.
This KF-21, further, is NOT South Korea's high-end fighter jet (it can't be, naturally, because it is still mostly an advanced prototyping fighter jet, still being worked on & will be worked on for YEARS to come yet, which is the normal course of event for all newly created aircraft); that would be the F-35 that South Korea also flies, alongside Japan, Singapore, and Australia, in the Pacific-Oceania region.
The Gripen, however, is already a much more matured, much more proven high end single engine fighter jet (similar to the older & totally proven F-16); it is the top fighter jet for all countries that operate it, from its creator Sweden to all other nations who buy and operate it...

Only thing in this plane is using GE Engine and UK seats. Korea is developing its own engine by 2035 in steps. 5000lbs turbo by 2026, 15000lbs by 2030 and 25000lbs< by 2035. Korea is developing both turbo and ramjet engine. They are in final stage of 5000lbs turbo engine for their stealth UAV which the prototype will be tested starting this year. Both seat and 5000lbs turbo engine are almost complete. Also Supersonic Air to Air missile along with Korean version of TAURUS long range ballistic missile for KF-21 will be completed by 2027-2028 accordingly. Prototypes are done already. Current version of KF-21 are for air to air fighting capability. Version 2 of KF-21 will include Air to Land capability and version 3 will be stealth which will be completed by 2032. Current plan is for RoKAF to acquire 120 and PAF to get 50 (pending) but Korea is likely to acquire total +200 with further active discussions with Poland, Saudi, UAE. The maintenance cost is likely to be managed by RoKAF (as most components are domestically produced other than engines, ejection seat and landing gears). @@user-vn5ms3vi8sMate, you obviously do not have much info about Turkiye.
First of all, it is not a third world country, with a trillion dollar economy.
Yes, with a nominal GDP of around 1.2 $trillion, it is the 17th largest economy in the world.
And if you consider the buying power equivalent, i.e PPP based economy, it is $3.6 trillion (vs Korea's $2.9 trillion), that makes it world's 11th largest.
Turkiye also has large companies like Aselsan, TAI, Roketsan etc all of which are among the top 100 defense companies in the world.
Turkiye has produced F-16 fighter planes under license for many decades.
And recently, they have been upgrading their older versions of block-30 F-16s to viper (block-70) level by themselves.
In addition, they were the program partners for F-35 and produced many critical components for that plane, which enabled them gain some important skills and capabilities.
Indeed that lead the way for them to produce the KAAN jet and was able to fly it recently (using GE engines).
Initially it will be 4.5 generation for the phase-1 stage.
But soon it will be a true 5th gen plane (by the year 2030) with domestically produced engine.
Turkish engineers already developed initial versions of AESA radar (to be integrated to KAAN hopefully this year) , mission task and flight control computers and all of its mission critical software was developed domesticlly.
And it will use totally domestic and already existing arms/missiles.
So I encourage you to do some basic research before you spit some baseless rhetoric here.

I am Korean and I am very interested in the KF-21.
The jas-39 is also a very good fighter that has been continuously upgraded.
Although it has a short takeoff distance and is equipped with a mid-level engine, it is a fighter jet that shows excellent armament capabilities.
I have no intention of disparaging other countries' fighter planes. Saab’s radar technology is also excellent.
In any case, it is clear that the KF-21 is a platform created with the 5th generation in mind.
What I appreciate about this fighter is its agile and smooth navigation control ability.
It also has an excellent thrust-to-weight ratio.
If the thrust-to-weight ratio is excellent, it is easy to apply a two-dimensional thrust deflection nozzle.
In Korea, application research on a two-dimensional thrust deflection nozzle similar to the F-22 has already been completed and is expected to be applied to Block 3.
The developer said it plans to evolve the KF-21 platform to the sixth generation.
The Royal Wingman unmanned fighter aircraft (Kaori-X), which is being produced by Korea's Korean Air (KAL), is expected to be in the final stages of completion, but will be kept as private as possible and is likely to be released along with the Air Force deployment of the KF-21.

What would happen if the KF-21 and the Gripen clashed in the air???,,RCS would be lower for the KF-21,,, since the exterior of the aircraft has a stealth shape,,,,,what goes into the KF-21? The standard detection range of the radar is known to be 200 km. The nose cone itself of the KF-21 is larger, so it has a stronger detection range. The missiles it is equipped with are currently Meteor and IRIS-T. This is the Gripen. The same is true. However, Korea is developing a ducted fan rocket missile, and the range will be significantly increased compared to the Meteor. Next, the KF-21, which is heavier in built-in electronic warfare equipment, is said to be capable of greater capacity,,, various sensors and antennas. A larger size is possible, so winning or losing is at least possible.

Volvo is an absolute beast within trucks and heavy equipment. Industrial component manufacturers like SKF dominate as well. In software companies like Spotify, Skype, etc keeps popping up.
Korea mainly has a massive edge in electronics, and semi conductors. However, Sweden is definitely not a slouch when it comes to industry in general.

Common misconceptions about the KF-21 //,,,It is self-developed through the efforts of Korean companies, and the only dependence on other countries is the engine, ejection seat, and some parts, and the core radar and avionics are all unique models. Some are self-made, and some are domestically produced with technology transferred from European equipment companies. Since this fighter is competing in the fighter jet market against American-made fighters, there is no way anyone in the U.S. can help with the development of this fighter. As we purchased American-made fighter jets, we received a large amount of technology transferred through offset trade, and this is the basis for the development of the KF-21. Korean companies either make or are already producing all the weapons mounted on the fighter jets.

True, Korea can produce way more domestically and that will help when it comes to exports. (Especially after Korea can produce a good jet engine)
However, Sweden is surrounded by Europe and that is a massive advantage. Much easier to cooperate, and build stable and safe supply chains for Sweden than for Korea. Korea is forced to produce more parts domestically. The only nearby "reliable" nation Korea has is Japan, and that relationship is a bit cold.

What's this recent abrupt surge of praising videos of KF-21 on CZcams?
The long-struggling fighter development project hasn't even produced an armable production trial model yet.
Surely it’s been holding much hope and potentiality, but… a brand-new “4.5 gen” fighter going in commission in 2030’s?
Also, as KAI revealed, KF-21 won’t be a cheap small light fighter anymore unlike the initial idea.
Besides, there will be more than 30 year gap between Gripen went into commission and the (planned) completion of KF-21. Such a late comer’s technological superiority will be no wonder at all, it would be rather a big problem if otherwise.

As for the combat capability of KF21, it is currently not possible to evaluate it. But one thing is certain, KF21's stealth ability is not outstanding! KF21 has never carried a Luneberg lens during each test flight. Even the first test flight of China's J20 carried a Luneberg lens, otherwise it would be difficult for ground radar to capture the J20. Moreover, during the test flight phase, for safety reasons, it is necessary to carry Luneberg lenses.

      1. First of all, KF-21 decided to license JHMCS-2 developed in Israel. And KAI and ADD, which are developing KF-21, will develop HMD at the EO-DAS level in cooperation with Elbit system. Currently, HMD for LAH is being developed and HMD for KF-21 is also being developed.
      2. KF-21 already has space for internal armament bay. Will take advantage of this space when it is upgraded to Block3.
      3. 2037 is still a long way off, but ADD and Hanwha Aerospace have started developing AB 20klbf turbofan engines. If you have a partner, the development period may be shorter. Currently, Snecma is showing great interest. Of course, AB 20klbf engines are not suitable for fifth-generation fighter jets, but S.Korea has only developed 5.5klbf turbofan engines. They don't have the technology to skip F414 and develop F135 engines yet. If KAI starts the KF-XX project, which is larger than KF-21, in the 2040s, an F135 grade engine will be developed together.

I'm speechless at your ignorance. I can see why your country and its people are a three-world country just by looking at this comment. I'm not mocking you and your country. Early Prototype Khan fighter jets made by Turkey are just scrap metal with the ability to fly. The technical barriers they have to overcome in order for Turkey to build a fift-generation jet fighter are too high. And even if Turkey buys some technology from outside, it's the same. I'm sure high precision engineering areas and electronic equipment problems will be hard for Turkey to solve easily. If you know Turkey's level of industrial technology, engineering technology, electronic equipment manufacturing technology, no one would have the same delusion as you. If the mission is just to fly, other countries can build Turkish-level prototypes. However, the technical area where you can develop your own aviation electronic equipment and code flight control is another level of difficulty. Very few countries can complete this technology themselves.
And these high technologies cannot be purchased from outside, and no country sells them even if they have a lot of money. If developing a fifth-generation jet fighter was as easy as you think, every country in the world would already be developing it on its own. And I don't know what you think of South Korea, but they are one of the few countries that has all the technology industries that are high enough to rank among the top 10 in all the high technology industries. Once again, the technological walls and limitations that Turkey will face in the future will be more than you can imagine. So I don't think Turkey will succeed in producing a fifth-generation jet fighter, as many experts in many countries have said. And the real problem in Indonesia is that politics and the military are corrupt to a serious level.
