↓ LYRICS ↓
Son, I'm 30
I only went with your mother 'cause she's dirty
And I don't have a decent bone in me
What you get is just what you see, yeah
I see it so, I take it greedy
And all the bad piss ugly things I feed me
I never help or give to the needy
Come on and see me
Yippee-ippee-ay-ay-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify some brother today
And I don't dig what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice
I said, "Dad, you're a shabby
You run around and groove like a baggy
You're only here just out of habit
Oh, it's mine, you might as well have it
You take ten feet back and then stab it
Spray it on and tag it"
So sack on me
I can't stand the needy
Get around here when you're put off your feeding
Yippee-ippee-ay-ay-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify somebody today
And I don't dig what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice
So sack all the needy
I can't stand to leave it
You come around here, and you puff up your feeding
Yippee-ippee-ay-ay-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify somebody today
And I don't dig what you gotta say
So go on and say it
Yippee-ippee-ay-ay-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify some brother today
And I don't hear what you gotta say
So come on and say it
And come on and tell me twice

Shaun on vocals, Paul on bass, Mark on guitar, Gary on drums, Knobhead on keyboards and Bez on E.
lol
Funniest comment I’ve seen all week
Sold a ford fiesta xr2 to Paul the keyboard player in 1999 it was grey and knackered lol
lol
Was he a hype man?
Shaun rocking the geography teacher look
Drove a Volvo estate to the gig
Chemistry more like. Practicals would have been good.
RIP Paul Ryder. His bass put the groove into the Happy Mondays signature sound. Between him and Mark Day on guitar they were technically very capable.
This was one of the first basslines I loved to learn and play. Great bassist and musician indeed.
Love from a 50 year old feeling like a teen again, RIP xx
It blows my mind that his brother outlived him.
Why?
@@michaelcole2845 he liked the Heroin just as much as Shawn.
Greatest opening line to a song ever
I always get: 'recently divorced geography teacher goes on a bender and crashes a super model convention' vibes from this video. Not that I can talk, I love a bit of corduroy and Clarks Originals.
Fit birds, and band of pillheads and an absolute banger of a tune. What more could a man want?
Football to come home again x
Ive done more CLASS As than them put together easy
an AM parked outside
@@garysinglewood4434 great, well done. Really proud of you.
J cups?
R.I.P - tragic to hear he died hours before a gig, but glad to hear he was still doing what he loved at 58!
Sad times. An understated Bass player, less is more. Driving force of the actual beautiful music. ❤
Awe, 😳.. So talented. Bless & thanks for the Riddim'S 🎸 🔥
Where are the bands of today Where's our music culture gone
Simon Carroll I would imagine..😄
@@neilwarren4573 Or Simon Cowell
"So what do you do?"
"I dance"
"So you're a dancer?"
"No, I drop a few and dance"
😂😂
Saw the Happy Monday at the Reading Festival in 1998. Was not a fan and went with my gf who was a huge fan. Mother of God, it was like a religious experience. The tent was absolutely packed and jumping. Best band I saw that weekend by miles, so impressive. Bez was such a huge part of the experience. People were diving under the tent to see them all the way through, until the security stopped it.
The world would be a better place if we all just chilled out and danced like Bez. The happiest music ever.
exactly. bez was a key factor to the success of the mondays. the stone roses did the same by having cressa dance behind the amps and nirvana had some guy named tony dance for them onstage whenever they played britain. that made nirvana a big deal in the u.k.
This song hasn’t aged at all
Who else still loves the Mondays? I was 16/17 in '90 and loved 'em!!
That winding, grinding, guitar riff is genius. Like an Escher staircase bringing you to the top, only to dump you back at the bottom and off we go again. Brilliance.
Yes!
Mark Day guitar genius full stop
Dat house music influence
Yep. He's hugely underrated and its criminal.
John Squire flashier playing slole the limelight st the time., but on Kinky Afro Mark Day playing is incredible. It's an absolute timeless classic.
Spot on.
The bass line is ridiculous.its got to be one of the catchiest of all time.brilliant track
i only found out recently this a cover oif a blues tune, who would have knew??
its just a chromatic variation of two notes. you need to listen to more music.
@JamesCurtisOKC And just what has its complexity,or lack of as you say got to do with my original comment?😂I'll save you from further embarassment.the answer is nothing haha
@@paul39a you mean Step On... right?
@@paul39aLady Marmalade - Patti LaBelle
RIP Paul Ryder. Looks so young in this.
I can't help but feel this is peak humanity.
R..I.P Paul Ryder. Happy Mondays was one of my favourite bands during my teenage years
Same I always had my own pills trills and bellyaches
One of the most iconic bass lines of the 90's. Bon voyage, Paul
Huge respect and big ups to Paul Ryder. You will be well remembered
This is truly one of the most stunningly amazing songs of all time. With an iconic video to match. Well done boys.
well said
Stunningly boring
@@billyshears6622 ....but enough about you lol
They definitely nailed the hot babe thing in the video!!!
@@tbssic1 i love the one babe who is, like, a little TOO excited to be there
I've said it b4 but I swear kinky afro has the best opening line in music ever.
You won't ever hear a better one either ! Haha
Love that opening line, have always said that mate
My son doesn’t agree
His mum agrees !
@@monty1864 that being on a band makes you spooky?
Oh well, at least he's got an opinion.
Has there ever been as much talent in one video?? The Band were pretty good too 😉
Always heard about the happy Mondays but never listened to their music until yesterday… it’s safe to say I’m now a fan these lads were classs
😊😅 monday 1991
The perfect Madchester formula: Can't Sing + Won't Sing = Genius.
I love these guys.
but he CAN and does sing...?
Kkkkkk
Verdade
Ryder rocking that dodgy substitute teacher look
And so began the 90's...
I left school in 89 and got and apprenticeship.. with mybwages bought a Song BIG Stereo it had an alarm where it would turn on and play the CD that was inside it.
I woke up to the first 8bars of this song for months... Great times, few £ in pocket, clubs, beers, dancing and girls.
Great sweet memories (as the wife snores beside me now !!!)
Fell in love with my wife to this music. Seriously, now: a blond, beautiful theater major blasting Madchester tracks at a small-town Midwest USA university? Hook, line and sinker, man...
I wish that guitar solo could go on forever
Uh-Huh.✌. So damn hypnotising & adorable.😍
Brilliant lyrics too...
Models - “Ah......we were led to believe this would be a Robert Palmer video shoot?!"
I hate being 50, I have to look back and think that we were going somewhere.
The 90s were ace and I miss them like hell. The politics were good, the drugs were good; wtf happened?
Naahhh party on baby, get on it.
dont worry bro -we're still here.
Just turned 51 it gets no better mate.
@@jmc0075 czcams.com/video/2CQLAhNlbfQ/video.html
I'm going to dance like Bez in front of my boss when I quit my job
Hell yeah 👍
How did that turn out?😝
Done it yet? If not can I request you shout "You're Twisting My Melon Maaaaan" at him or her while you do?
Have you done it yet
My hero.
Take that Robert Palmer.
Really?🤪
I dig your sentiment..but, Robert Palmer was a PIMP.
Annnnd yet. he had no Bez..Gods gift to teenagers.
Take that Robbie Williams
And the others
The best Bond theme we never had.
RIP Paul Ryder...Gone way too soon ❤️
The Bez dance should be mandatory every morning from 8-9 am. Get fit, out on your doorstep, giving it beans...
Best idea I've heard in weeks.
HaHa/Amen.👍
Fukkin great song, quality lyrics.
This is a brilliant tune and hasn't aged at all.
Awsome 90's.
Totally agree. Hasn't aged one but, in 33 years. Still twisting my melon man.
I was 15 when this came out, I never forget what I love. Cheers from Uruguay!
One of the most criminally underrated bands ever with one of the greatest lyrically genius’s this country ever produced
No more, no less.
Rest in power paul aka 🐎 horse.....this song and that entire pills and thrills and bellyaches album are masterpieces...
RIP Paul...one of the best bassist ever.
And the best opening lyrics award goes to.......
Rumour has it there was blood found in Bez's Ecstasy system.
DJosephWells lovely sense of humour.
😂
Lol lol lol
😂😂😂
My ass
The fact that Bez just danced all his life as a career with his mates still makes me happy. Legend 😀
I cant get over how well shot this is. not just the cinematography but everything is clicking.
.. except the zipper.
Early 90s...when we had the whole world infront of us....happy days!...
30 years..gone in the blink of an eye!
Missing those days so much!😭
Who would have thought we would get f***ed over, eh?!!
I was born 1994 you guys are the lucky ones
Happy days?? Happy Mondays. ;)
Criminally underrated band and art that they produced. Only as i've got older and taken more in have I started to appreciate what they did. Coming from that background it always just seemed kind of normal, like your mates were making some cool tunes.
How many bloody years later....Shaun's on about "helping the needy" and pointing at Bez 😂😂😂😂..... that's pals for life there 🤣🤣🤣🤣♥️♥️
I've watched this video for years but only just noticed that Seans fly is half open for most of the video.
The guitar sound is a thing of beauty
RIP Paul thank you for the music
Shaun Ryder’s singing voice even sounds like Maccer from GTA San Andreas! Lmao long live The Gurning Chimps! Haha
God, I love my country.
My favorite funky Friday song. R.I.P. Paul. You will be missed.💙
An epic song and an amazing moment in time, so glad I was there in Manchester and rubbed shoulders with them at the Hacienda. Later in 96-98 , I met Shaun and Paul on a number of occasion when they came to visit Astrella Leitch on Palatine Road, we lived upstairs in the flat above hers. The music is timeless and still brilliant.
Watching Bez dance brings a smile to my face. Individually. Nice. Care free dancing.
R.I.P Paul Ryder you legend
Quite likely the greatest opening line of a song in music history.
You nicked that off Janice Long (but you are right!)
Son, I'm 30
I only went with your mother 'cause she's dirty
@@pintpot
Never heard Janice Long say that but I came to that conclusion on my own also.
Bl**dy right.👍
That unique guitar sound gets me every ...time
Love Happy Mondays 💙 R.I.P Paul Ryder man
Is this the best song ever written? In terms of lyrics, the only competition is Like a Rolling Stone.
I edited this video which was directed by the Bailey Bros who also did world in motion. It was shot on film at Granada in Manchester and we had no off-line as the director said the band wouldn't last the night! Massive Lala with Sean and Bez in the edit suite all sorts of fun and games and actually looking back it's not that bad really. All nighter loads of booze and other and I'm happy with it.
dave pollard thanks for the insight buddy..Have always loved this video and wanted to know more about how it was made. It really captures the off beat, slightly odd, something not quite rightness of the mondays to fsntastic effect.
@dave pollard where were the dancers from, gorgeous!
yeap, they got a Roxy Brian Ferry video style
Sean looks a bit stoned!
I spent 5 days editing this video on low band umatic with Keith Jobling ( the director) in my front room on Eva street in Rusholme . Phil shotton the other Bailey brother was not involved in this video . Tony Wilson was there to sign off the offline . Your mind must be playing tricks on you Dave.
never fails to surprise me the negative things people have to contribute rather than stay silent when they've nothing sensible or relative to say... This is not only a true classic for MUSICAL and Video achievement, but a symbol if friendship and solidarity amongst ypung mucisians..
England this is something to be truly proud of for home grown talent for all involved in this video and song and a celebration for what people can do when they join. all time classic
The whole baggy scene just would'nt have been as good without these legends
That's a dam fine jacket Shaun is wearing, probably the coolest man in the world
Who's have thought in the 80's and 90's we'd still have Shaun & Bez in 2021 .... 😁👍🏼
Shaun Ryders lyrics are criminally underrated
Rest in peace . Happy Mondays music will always be a happy time of my life
Q.E.P.D Paul Ryder. Siempre en nuestros corazones ♥
Isn’t British music the absolute best!
naturally
Still one of the best albums l have ever heard in my entire life PT&B and l am 68, God bless you Paul you wil be remembered 😞
Why is he dresses like a geography teacher
man, just read the sad news, RIP Paul Ryder. You were a fucking groovy bass player and the Mondays are legendary.
This great early 90's music gives me mixed feelings ... enjoying the music so much, but the nostalgia for those great old days makes me kinda sad and missing that time sooo much!! Can't even tell...😥
I was blessed to have been in my teens with this era which I'm proud and grateful of. I think in was in 2001 went to see OASIS at Murray field rugby stadium. Everybody was pumped up in a good way and word was The Doves were coming on 1st...The place erupted when here were The full Happy Mondays on the stage belting out this song. Afterwards Bez was walking/dancing around with the crowd, decent guy doing that. It was such a fantastic surprise and made that concert 1 of the best I've been to.
Jon Moxley’s spastic movement that mimics Bez’s dancing brought me here.
True, but I'm happy to say I actually like the song, too.
This will be my "Happy Monday" song forever.
Actually a very, very, melancholic song. The Happy Mondays, like The Farm, were poets really. Kinky Afro was kind of the North Western 'The Doors' for the 90s. I get emotional thinking about the 90s. It truly WAS a superb reimagining of the 1960s in to a more urban template.
Picnicl best times ever, we even had a euro96 in england!!!
Totally agree, the late 80s/early 90s were up there with the 60s. The Roses/Mondays, house explosion and golden age of hip hop. That's some classic shit and lit the decade up with classic records from those that followed.
I just barfed a little reading this.
I just barfed at you using the word barfed, what are you? 10? Knobcheese
You have no right to talk about language, miloandjoesdad01. In fact, you have no right to be anyone's dad. Is that what you do as a dad? Spend your time on CZcams looking at comments in Happy Mondays' videos. You may be their father, but you'll never be their dad. I bet their mom has custody.
Everything seems so safe and sheltered now, it was better back then.
best video in the history of humankind
Rowetta has an incredible voice x
❤
Rip Pual 😩
The fact that this is put out by London Recordings must irk some in the Mondays
Rip Ryder ♡ thanx for the madchester magic ♡
I love Happy Mondays, they give me happy days, just by listening to them.
im so with u on this nonni139
RIP Paul
Heard this in my local manga store, and, oh wow, that guitar riff is absolutely beautiful.
Worship happy Mondays brought up with this music indie music rocks better than the rubbish today proud to be a Manchester woman xx❤❤❤
I love the fact that Rowetta got to play herself in “Twenty-Four-Hour Party People.”
Looks like the IT Department hired a few girlfriends.
the girls asked for virus protection beforehand
Gold
They must have filmed this in the UN building in NYC
just saw this, EPIC comment
You made my day... :D
Legends from another galaxy. As Noel Gallagher said 'if you can remember the 90's, you wasn't there '. I can confidently say the happy Mondays don't remember this
Love these guys. No one can beat these Manc guys. Xx
Rest in peace Paul!
Music for a generation, what an anthem.
Love you guys forever..
We (🇬🇧) really have made some bloody brilliant music!
All the models thinking "wtf is this here?" One of most brilliant absurde videos of all times.
I love Bez and his dance moves! As a kid(5 years old 1990) I use to mimic his expressions and copy the moves. Safe to say, I horrified the grown ups hehe!
