  • The Sago palm is an interesting plant, that is relatively forgiving and fun to watch grow. Check out how these fronds unfurl!

    I picked up this sad Cycad for a few dollars on the Lowe's clearance rack. I have never had a palm or palm relative so I wanted to try and see if this Sago Palm could recover.
    It took over a month before all of a sudden three fronds shot up from the trunk. It was really neat to watch the little stems change and relieve their bright green leaves. These plants need great drainage and plenty of sun and they will reward you with growth all summer long.

    Diamond hole saw bits work best on clay pots. Drill from the inside so you can have water pooled in the bottom to keep the bit cool.

    I just bought one of these from my local "Lowes" store, it was NOT in this glued down stone crap situation, BUT, I HAVE seen many of them in this same setup. I've read that they LIKE to be potbound or rootbound, strangely enough. My first instinct was to repot it in a bigger pot BUT it seems that isn't necessary, and won't be for a while. BTW, it is NOT an actual REAL "palm" but a Cycad. Just in case somebody didn't know that already.
    Even though it shows a bit of dried out fronds, you have all that new growth coming out, MAYBE the dried out fronds weren't used to as much sun? Maybe THEY were old fronds that were from back when your plant was under store lights at Wal-Mart? It's looking good anyway.

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for the tips. I agree on not repotting. I think they do well potbound.

    • @dollladie
      @dollladie Před 4 lety +3

      Brown or beige leaves/fronds on a Sago (usually) mean over watering - which is not hard to do since we can't really see what's going on in the soil. I have one from Lowes I got in September. Was doing beautifully until I gave it 2 drinks in one week about a month ago. Now I have to cut the fronds back also ... will see what happens.

    • @juliegogola4647
      @juliegogola4647 Před 4 lety +1

      @@dollladie The one I have I only watered once when I first got it home, and it was VERY dry before I watered it, I am thinking it is from being moved from inside a Lowes store "greenhouse" and into MY greenhouse and perhaps MORE heat and light than it came from. The "Lowes greenhouse" also had houseplant ferns in the same light along with EVERY houseplant they sell, so, MAYBE lighting was different also, the temperature was SURELY colder in my greenhouse, the heat comes on when it dips below 39F in my GH and at Lowes I am thinking they never went below about 60 maybe warmer. The plant is hardy up to 20F or 25F BUT IF exposed to 39F after being at 55-60F at LEAST, I am thinking it WILL have some leaf burn. I am very much sure it is NOT a water issue UNLESS it is GREATLY sensitive to public water with chems in it. I am NOW bottling as much rain water as I can to use on some of my plants in the GH. I am THINKING it is from moving it from the VERY heated Lowes store situation to my Gh that is 39F and up, NOT 50-60 as it was used to, OR the light intensity is why, my GH is likely BRIGHTER and hotter, it gets HOT when the sun is out in my GH. Up to 90-100 even in winter ONLY when the sun is out though. I MAY remove all of the fronds that are burnt looking, and that may be most or all of them. The new ones will be used to the brightness and heat. It also needs repotted. It is very potbound circling roots are visible on the top of the soil just a quarter of an inch down.

    • @dollladie
      @dollladie Před 4 lety +1

      Here's an update ... It was getting worse, so I decided to take it out of the pot and check out the roots - the soil was (probably really was) like sawdust. The roots were dry and crunchy, resembling grape nuts cereal ... it was awful. I'd never seen anything like it. So, I discarded it - sadly. Not sure if I'll try another or not. Maybe.

    • @juliegogola4647
      @juliegogola4647 Před 4 lety

      @@dollladie Sorry to hear that. Maybe IF you find one cheap enough, you can try again. I am going to repot mine in spring, I say that because it really needs it, the roots are circling around and around in the SHALLOW pot from Lowes. It will need more soil for summer. I HOPE I don't kill it, but, I really think it needs fresh soil and some roots pruned. It won't hurt to try I GUESS.

    My biggest problem with with Sago palms is scale insects. It is extremely difficult to peel them off Sago fronds. I had it outside last summer, removed it from its pot & sprayed it from my garden hose to remove scale insects. I re-potted it into new soil & a larger pot & sprayed it with neem oil. It did not grow new fronds. During the winter, the scale insects returned, so I sprayed with neem oil again. Now, I have it outside in my greenhouse.

  • @djratino
    @djratino Před 2 lety

    People buy these for a center for succulent gardens sometimes. I think about everything should have a drain hole. I put a thin layer of gravel in the bottom of my pots. I don't use limestone gravel. River rock is preferred. I then use a palm/cactus mix over it. I don't get black dirt on my concrete porch that way. You can add a thin layer of clay buster mulch to the top, but it's not necessary. 🐀🐾

      Yes, I’d say so. I saw some amazing Sagos when I was in Las Vegas and it was 120 degrees. Mine was shaded in the afternoon and I only watered when the soil was dry. You will need to water a little more on really hot days and if it’s in direct sun for long periods. They are drought tolerant, but if it is super hot they will need a more evenly moist soil.

    I have 1 that all the 5 leaves have dried. Should I cut them, re-pot it if I wanted to grow/revive? I'm in upstate NY, should I put it outside?? If so, when would be the best time to do it, temperature wise?
    Thanks!!!

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  Před 4 lety +2

      Yea, maybe repot and check out what’s going on with your roots. You want them to be white and firm. Cut off any dead or rotted roots. Make sure and repot In a good draining soil, like a cactus or succulent mix. Put it in a nice warm window with a lot of sun. This plant is from the desert so it needs it to be hot. Move it outside when temps are consistently above 75ish...make sure and move it out gradually and still bring it in at night until it gets used to the outdoors.

    Not sure if you will see this but I’m wondering if you have any pointers. I got my sago almost 2 years ago from Lowe’s and only had 4 fronds with many of the leaves being yellow. I trimmed off all the yellow leaves and moved it into a bigger pot but I wonder if it’s too big. I also give it fertilizer on a 6 month basis as the bottle says to do. In the 2 years I’ve had it, there has been no new growth or size difference. I do know that they’re slow growers but I wonder if I could do anything different.

      SuburbanSill I have not but I will try it out. Also, in the middle of the plant where the fronds connect to the root ball there are and few brown, fuzzy looking shoots. They’ve been there since I got it but could those have been new growths that died?

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  Před 4 lety

      Hmmm. When they start to come out they are sort of brown and fuzzy...for some reason it seems stalled. Start by moving it outside for a few hours a day...a little longer each time and then leave it out overnight to get it acclimated. See if that helps. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
