    I buying a 42 bushel tow-behind John Deere grass catcher for my X-534 garden tractor.To me it makes slightly more sense to mow and catch the grass at the same time,when your done,your done,your not having to switch attachments and having to go over the lawn twice.It takes a little hp.to run the blower on it,but its all done in one pass.

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 6 lety

      4 gauge I agree going over once does save time. I usually try to not collect my grass unless it gets to tall, Then I sweep it up. Nice thing with the sweeper is it can be towed behind another mower so the kids can sweep as I mow. With the packing action I get out of this I usually only have to unload once. I still can't wait to see what it does with leaves.

    Can you flip the hitch on the sweeper so you can collect while you mow? Like a silage mower

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 6 lety +2

      Sean Gilmore Yes you can. It can be towed directly behind like I have it set up in the video or you can mount hitch so sweeper is offset to the left or right depending on the direction of your exit shoot on your mower.

    • @JDSFLA

      You can do that as the sweeper can be set up left, right or directly behind the tractor.

    Have a 430 with a rear discharge 60 inch deck. It tends to wind row some clippings to the left side of the deck. Can the sweeper be positioned to the left as well? Or is it set up for center or right side pull only?

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 6 lety

      MrThumper1440 You cab set it up to sweep directly behind the tractor as well as to the right side or the left side also. I'm not sure tho how it would work behind the rear discharge deck. The sweeper may stick out a little further than your windrow. I'm sure you could just drill 2 new holes And mount it in a little closer if you wanted to.

  • @thingsdemystified
    @thingsdemystified Před 6 lety +2

    Instead of putting a piece of cardboard there, I would have moved the deflector up so that the grass could be evenly spread. But if it isn't too long, I always mulch. You can't see the grass left behind, so I really don't see the point of sweeping grass. That is so much time that could be used for something else.

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 6 lety +1

      Content Updating That was actually the first time I ever mowed with the deflector on the mower. I always have it off And with high lift blades it throws grass up to 12 feet. The only time I sweep is in the spring when I can't kerp up due to rain. If I don't swerper it builds up to much thatch. Some parts in this video were not to thick where others were. I only added the deflector And cardboard on it to make lines as I mowed do it would take less passes to sweep, Rather than sweep the whole lawn.

      steiger 256 , I like the mow job and the stripes. I mow 6 acres and stripe it too, always looks good. Can’t hardly beat the front mount mowers.

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 6 lety

      Jrbpa 57 It is hard to beat a front mount mower. I have looked at compact tractors, But I love having the mower out front. It is so much easier to mow looking forward rather than down at your deck. Also front mount mowers are easier to clean.

    • @jrbpa5775
      @jrbpa5775 Před 6 lety

      steiger 256 Agee with the cleaning, mine has electric lift so it’s very simple to maintain. I would never have another belly mower. I do own a John Deere X734 all wheel steer to roll and spray or fertilize but not to mow with.

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 6 lety

      Jrbpa 57 The electric lift is nice. Ventrac just came out with a option on there new decks that is a hydro lift. If I get a new deck it will have it on it. It would be nice not having to lift the deck. I always hated pulling belly mowers. John Deere does offer a drive over deck now that is nice, But still not as easy as a front mount flip up

  • @waradmiral7916
    @waradmiral7916 Před 6 lety

    It's so important to go with your stripes,,,,,,,,,,geeeze eee petes!! And this all could be done in one pass by using a vac attached to the mower deck. More gas,more time,,to do it this way,you must have tons of spare time on your hands

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 6 lety

      WarAdmiral 79 Actually I could swing the sweeper to the right And sweep as I go. It's faster for me to cut the lawn like I normally do without pulling a vac or sweeper behind me. The reason I made my shoot put the grass in a line is to reduce the time it takes to sweep it up, To minimize passes. A lawn vacuum attachment has a gas engine on it that burns fuel And is another engine you have to maintain And store. I only sweep the lawn when absolutely nesasary like in spring when it rains to much to mow or in fall for leaves. I do not have lots of extra time so this us why I got this to minamize dumping. I can cut almost 6 acres of grass And sweep up the clippings in just over 3 hours. I think that's pretty efficient.

  • @mooiman9

  • @CumminsDslPwr
    @CumminsDslPwr Před 6 lety

    Since you are wind rowing the grass the way you are, it sure looks to me like you could flip the hitch over on the sweeper to offset it to the side of your mower and tow it behind at the same time while you are mowing. Just an observation, not criticism.

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 6 lety

      CumminsDslPwr It seems more practical, But it's just easier pulling it behind another tractor after I mow. I just sweep until full then go dump. Plus with going around trees And backing up mowing it would be tough. If you were a golf corse or wide open are that would work great, But for ne this is easier. It does make more sense the way you said to do it tho. Thanks for watching.

    Has anyone seen how much these sweepers cost? I saw a used one for around $5000. I never found the price of a new one, but you can bet your ass that it's gonna cost 10 grand or more. I'll stick to the $300 dollar lawn sweepers and just unload the grass more often. Got dam they are proud of these things. You can buy a freaking round bailer for hay in Oklahoma, cheaper than you can buy this overpriced piece of crap. The company would actually make more money if they'd come down on the price and sell them for $800 dollars, because they'd sell a lot more of them.
