What really helps me with frontside turns is opening up that front shoulder…lift your arm and point it while making the turn to the point where you wanna end the turn. That makes the difference for me. It’s so much harder to do without that open shoulder.

Totally agree about pilates. I've been doing reformer pilates twice a week for a year now, and as a 62 year old it's made a huge difference to core strength and flexibility. If the body can move freely the skating techniques come easier.

Frontside turns....'the scary one'.....exactly what I started focusing on 3 days ago and 3 sessions later, I can feel the progress. At first, I was getting lots of practice jumping off my board as I went in to it, lol!
Your tips are spot on to what I've been feeling, they only thing I'd add is for your eyes to keep looking where you want to be to follow through the turn. Many times that I jumped off my board, my eyes were looking at the wrong place; it got easier once I realized it.

Hi Steve, 57 here, your video are always so focused!! I love them all. You're right bowl riding is extremely fun but super tiring. After an hour I'm exhausted. I will consider plates, never thought of, so far.
As regards my setup I ride with Bones super reds
Bearings and Powell 64mm dragons wheels. Ciao!

Great video, thanks a lot! My overall goal to ride a bowl just as flowy as you do in that video. Happy riding 🤙

As a kind of hack for frontside, I like to go into a deep speed tuck on approach when I know I plan on going high on a frontside, almost like I'm about to do a Bertslide. For some reason or another, it makes the whole thing feel much more natural, and loosens you up.
Very much agree with people at our age, and weight needing lower impact, longer duration strength/dexterity training on the side, for the lower body. Will save you from a ton of minor injuries, pulls, and strains. Doing slides, kick 180's, and rotational tricks is super hard on your hamstrings in particular. Such that too much high impact repetition while skating has torn muscle for me that's disabled me from doing much more than just cruising for weeks at a time.
I recommend the Heisman exercise, and modified side to side Heismans.

Love your wheels for sliding. I’ll be buying these for perfect consistency and slides. As far a bowls I wish I could find a park that didn’t have vertical walls but more a large bank. Preferably 2 sides like you could find in a bowl. Nowhere in San Diego that I see.

One of the best surfskate channels.
One question: there is a yow meraki clone on the market and i have never seen These clone on your Channel. And i am curious about it, have you or the Community some experience with it? The clone looks like the original but is way cheeper. If you could make a Video between the original and the clone, I think this would be perfekt. So the whole Community can get these information :)

I don't support clones. I don't like that, as I don't believe it's good for the community for many reasons.

I'm a regular footed rider and I find the front side turns easier than back side turns for some reason.

    Hey steve!
Could you make a video about the difference between the yow s4 and yow s5 truck? I can’t find them in my local skateshops.

    • @SurfskateLove
      @SurfskateLove  Před rokem

There's really no need to. The only difference is the spring. The S4 is for lighter riders (say 160 pounds or less, depending on personal preference), the S5 for heavier (say over 160 pounds).

I started learning last year, then life got in the way, I got out of the habit, and I lost the eye of the tiger, haha. I need to get back to it.
