What Makes This Singer Great? Paul McCartney
He wrote songs that made the whole world sing and we're still singing his songs more than 50 years later.
Paul McCartney's name is certainly synonymous with greatness both as part of the Beatles and as a solo artist.
Not only is Paul a great singer but his songwriting abilities are like very few others and his songwriting collaboration with John Lennon is still the most successful in music history.
A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he always had a knack for creating catchy melodies and telling great stories through his songs.
Today we'll explore a variety of performances from Paul displaying his varied styles and approaches. I'll be sharing my thoughts of what I think made him great and I'd love to hear your thoughts as well. Please make sure to let me know in the comments!

I saw McCartney back in 02 or 03. Two and a half hours of Beatles and Wings songs and the man didn't take a break the entire show. The best concert I've ever seen in my life.
The thing about McCartney is that you don’t realize how great he is as a singer until you’re trying to sing his songs in their original key, the man is amazing, so versatile
Thank you.
Look at how he can do both very gentle singing, like Hey Jude, Yesterday etc, and then you have I'm Down, Helter Skelter, Oh! Darling, Monkberry Moon Delight which are all amazing screamers, the diversity of this man's voice is truly amazing
He's so talented!
The vocal on Monkberry Moon Delight is one of the greatest in rock history. Good vocal distortion on Old Siam Sir also. Check out Paul's vocal on The Lovers That Never Were.
There's that break at the end of Hey Jude where he *opens up* in a big way and it sounds incredibly. "Hey, Judy Judy Judy Judy Jude AHHH" :D
call me back again is an amazing screamer too!
also long tall sally, amazing high pitch vocals there
He's an incredible singer. Instinctually melodic but with a real chameleon quality in terms of vocal character. Full on screamer to dulcet crooner, often in the space of one song!
He's the most versatile singer. He can literally sing anything any genre and he did
👍👍
His live "Long Tall Sally" cover absolutely blew me away. When it was time to croon, he crooned with the best of them. When it was time to belt, he ramped up too. Extremely versatile singer.
Awesome!
Paul McCartney is by far the greatest Singer Song Writer of all time. I am not sure anyone else has come close to what he has accomplished in his career. Just amazing. I AM AMAZED.....
If I could sing like anyone it would be Paul McCartney. Not because of his vocal ability but because of the connection he makes with so many people and the power to make them feel.
Eric Swartz 👍
Eric I could not agree more, I would love to sing like Paul
The best of all time
He still sings songs in their original key. Billy Joel thought that was impressive.
When I first heard Maybe I'm Amazed (studio cut) I was blown away. He's pouring his heart into this song.
He can sing tenderly, but then totally shred with Helter Skelter or Oh Darling. It's a amazing....
Absolutely, Mtty C!
Even Linda sounded good on 'Maybe I'm Amazed'..
Underrated singer for sure just listen to Oh Darling one of the best vocal performances of all time! I think you should feature that song sometime! McCartney = LEGEND!
Thanks for the suggestion, Jim!
Underrated? He pops up when you google "best singers of all time" lmao.
@@CeeJayDee94 and he's also regarded as one of the best songwriters and is a member of what many call the greatest band of all time. So idk he's got alot going for him 🤣
underrated? by whom? Someone who saw him croaking out his songs in his 70's? He's one of the best rock n roll singers ever, it's almost impossible to argue with that. Anyone who thinks he was an overrated singer knows squat about music. And has shitty taste, to boot.
@@MichaelTurner856 and don't forget that he is an amazing multiinstrument player ...
Paul is always the best 😊
He is!
He is the greatest singer/songwriter of all time. Love Paulie!
Wings Over America has to be the best live album of all time. His vocals are incredible!
That is a great album!
There are a number of music legends who have either died, retired from performing, or became recluses, and then there's Sir Paul McCartney. His career has lasted more than six decades from when he first joined John Lennon's band the Quarrymen to right now at age 77. Also, Paul's work as a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and actor (remember Give My Regards To Broad Street?) has stood the test of time, and his voice is still as strong and potent today as it was when he debuted as a member of the Beatles.
Such a phenomenal career, Benji!
He has always been able to convey a mood,; bright, forlorn, or angry, and I think vocally that is his magic
😀
Hey Ken! Paul is the master. A legend. The ultimate showman. It's incredible how his voice has withstood the test of time. There are only a few that can hold an audience in the palm of their hand. Paul is definitely one. His stage presence is like no other. Simply amazing! Such a shame that John was taken from us. Just IMAGINE what could of been with two of the greatest song writers to ever create music. Paul McCartney THE VOICE. THE MASTER. FOREVER BEATLES!!!🐞🐞🐞🐞
Thank you.
He will never be forgotten. His smooth lyric tenor voice can be recognized immediately. Greatest of all time!
Awesome!
Paul McCartney is a legend and will be remembered forever. My favorite vocal performance by him is on 'Oh Darling!' he absolutely kills it
That's a great one.
I think his perfect pitch is something to be celebrated - I mean have you heard a sweeter sound than Paul McCartney. Always in tune - not easy to do. And the way he can mimic and yet add to so many musical genres, both in terms of songwriting and singing, is another amazing thing about him. Without a doubt one of the best rock singers ever.
Rock on!
my great aunty has seen the beatles live when they first toured in 1963 in manchester, she said she could barely hear anything but she still said it was absolutely amazing. i also ABSOLUTELY love the beatles and they changed music forever. R.I.P John Lennon and George Harrison
Awesome!
RAM is the album where he shows to the world his musical skills: all he plays it in this album and all the songs he sings show he really have a big vocal range, a great ability to play different instruments and his ability for create melodies and put it all together. He's really a legend! I hope many people give it a chance to his solo career which has a lot of treasures, his contributions like a beatle were magnific but in his solo career you can find amazing songs too.
Mister Paul McCartney he is a Legend
For sure!
*sir
I personally love listening to Long Tall Sally and I'm Down, I just love the power in his voice on those songs and how it comes in so strong. I feel like that style and the technique he would use for those songs carry with him throughout his career. The boyish quality in his voice in those early records were something amazing when paired with the rest of the Beatles.
Thank you.
Paul is a rare example of extreme talent and extreme dedication.👍🏻💯👏 To my opinion he reached the highest level possible! His silky and gentle voice reaches the deepest parts of my soul, Paul is one of the kind. I can't help singing along with him. Nostalgia!🤗🤗💞💞💞
I tell you, it's just so scary how fast time flies. You blink once and your favourite songs are decade old.😱🤪💕
Paul McCartney really excels in (cover)songs like Kansas City and Long Tall Sally - no one else comes close.
Koozie modo 👍
He is the greatest singer all around the world. Paul McCarteny has a very pleasant voice, silky, caressing. He sings beautifully both deeper and higher tones, and easily, without effort. Which is not the case for many singers. Some singers work very hard to sing critical voices. A lot of people confuse their live music with the songs they record on discs. This should not be done to the person who loves music, to the person who understands music. Sir Paul always gives the maximum. He is always striving for maximum. That’s a great virtue for Paul McCartney. Sir Paul also plays at least 25 different instruments.
Erika Polyák 👍
With a billion records sold this was a great choice. John lennon on a tune like This Boy demonstrates that he is equal in every way vocally to Paul. I'm still in awe that the two greatest song writers ended up in the same band.
John gatti 👍
John couldn’t never reach the notes that Paull did ! Be fair.
I love how pure his voice sounds on Blackbird and Mother Nature’s Son.
Paul is just an icon! I am tempted to say that he is even greater as a song writer than as a singer...
An icon indeed, Theo!
Thanks for the video. I think of McCartney singing "Long Tall Sally", "Yesterday", and "I'm Down" at the same concert. His vocal range is incredible. His ability to harmonize is second to none. They used 4 track recorders, not 2000 track recorders with unlimited effect units. Their live performances are also incredible, especially since they couldn't hear each other. I also think of The Beatles recording an album in one day. They recorded the album "Let it Be" in 15 days, and 30 days later they began recording "Abbey Road". Had they spent 3 years between albums and had the use of state-of-art recording studios, their vocals would had been better (lol).
His..." oh darling" is a must for anyone who wants to appreciate pauls Amazing vocal skills.
Very few performers could sing that song without falling short at some point...incredible .
You simply have love him and listen in awe
..
Ken, Paul McCartney great communicator of putting life experiences into a song and doing it brilliantly time and time again. Amazing talent and still out there performing hats off.
Well said, Vocality!
Very enjoyable video on Paul's singing with good points about distortion. Paul McCartney is my favorite musician. I think this series is a wonderful idea. Thanks Ken Tamplin.
Awesome!
What stands out to me is that Paul has been able to connect to the heart and has thus touched the world with his music and singing! Interestingly, there is a modern singer that is completely different that also touches the heart ... that would be Dimash!
Awesome!
My favourite Beatle as a teenager. Back then (the 90s) there was a common, somewhat insidious feeling that McCartney was "not cool". I remember that from college. That Macca nickname for instance, was used to make fun of him. They called him naff (you know, lame) because of Silly Love Songs and those other sentimental pieces. Oh and the Frog Chorus.
I always used to retort - you know, you're judging him by standards HE SET HIMSELF. He set the bar, you know. Along with the other Beatles.
Anyway, until my Lennon phase I was a knocked-out McCartney fan. I still love the fella. I even like Mull o' Kintyre.
He set the bar alright, Joe Clever!
Macca was the best Beatle
John commented after the break up that Paul just writes silly loves songs, in response Paul wrote Silly Love Songs. It went to number 1.
Paul McCartney is a legend love the Beatles love him with wings love to hear him sing live and let die simply having a wonderful Christmas time he is a good singer I always enjoyed him Ken he was my favorite in the Beatles man 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I dig "Live and Let Die", too.
So do I live and let die has some kickin butt music awesome song love the movie as well big james bond fan
I read that Paul wrote "Live & Let Die" on the way home in his car from the movie theme meeting , but didn't present it for a couple of weeks as he thought they may disregard it because he wrote it so quickly. A true genius!!
@@kentamplin How about doing a Ray Charles video?
Thanks Ken for featuring McCartney... he has been my favorite male singer since I was 12
Years old and I am 57 .. I have seen him twice in concert in 1989
And 1993 in Atlanta and he did not disappoint.I will always believe the best he ever sounded was on the wings live double album(wings over America from the 76 tour ... his voice in my opinion was at its pinnacle!!!
Awesome!
None more versatile and gifted as Paul in modern pop music.....
I like all the different styles he used, like with "Lady Madonna" and "So Bad".
Awesome!
I would love to see you do something with the medley from Abby Road. Golden Slumbers is a fantastic demonstration of Paul singing so sweet and gently to really belting it out. Another idea is Why Don't We Do It in the Road followed by the 100 second long masterpiece … I Will. Man, I Will get's no attention but its a perfect song. I wish it was longer but its perfect. Wow. Then, of course I love Martha My Dear. I love my animals and I do talk to them. God, such a sweet song … Just about his beloved Martha.
Thank you.
That is the best medley ever and always will be
Great idea , Ken should just do beatles songs for 30 days
@@whoareyouwhowho6553 Fantastic idea!!!
Do Paul, John, Ringo, George and some solo stuff.
Paul McCartney is just great!! ❤❤ I'm not a Beatles fan, but enjoy listening to Paul saying and loved everything he did with Wings and his solo work.
You said it best.. Paul McCartney is not the best vocalist but he is good and one of the best songwriters and storytellers.. I miss John Lennon! He was another great one. Artists like Paul McCartney are true gems.
Awesome!
Paul McCartney has unbelievably held onto that voice for decades! He’d survived the primitive sound systems to be heard above the crowd and a multitude of screaming girls! Incredible!! Still going strong till this day! Maybe we’re amazed! I know that I’m going back a bit but would like to see something on Burton Cummings from the Guess Who, John Kay from Steppenwolf, Linda Rondstadt and , believe it or not, Ethel Merman!
I think you absolutely nailed it Ken. Paul isn't the greatest voice of our time but he's good. He is simply all around great and that certainly earns him a place as one of the greatest of our time.
Thank you.
@@kentamplin, paul is one great singer with a vocal range of 5 . How can’t say that he’s one the best singer all the time!
I might add, that I think the age in his voice adds a wonderful pensiveness to the songs that connects the audience to the lyrics.
For sure!
I’m pretty sure McCartney played all of the instruments on the track “The Ballad of John and Yoko”, including percussion, as Ringo and George were not in the studio. What a legend.
I legend indeed, Calvin!
John Lennon played guitar parts on that
I’d like to hear more about the singing! He was Elvis and Little Richard rolled into one. Range, texture, coloring, he also has the ability to be an actor playing different characters in songs. Talk about his straight attack or when he used vibrato. There was so much I would have loved to hear you talk about.
😊 Thanks for listening!
@@kentamplin I would love for you to really dive in with some more technical stuff. I am enjoying the videos!
Helter Skelter. Monkberry moonlight, oh darling, long tall sally
Just a few examples of his incredible vocal range and ability.
Even at 81 years old he can still belt out these
Songs almost effortlessly.
Love the man!
I saw Paul live in 2017. 4 and a half hour show. He was fantastic
I'm sure!
Saw him in 2019. Three hours without a break. Totally amazing 👍
Shea Stadium was a trip! The only vocal I actually heard was John Lennon screaming while playing the electric organ in the song "I'm Down". Best rock show of my life, and I've seen hundreds. 😛
The scream in "can't buy me Love." Yeah, great writer too. Versatile, and he has contributed standards to our repertoire.
Paul McCartney is awsome I get it I was there. What about George Harrison, Ian Anderson or Peter Gabriel. The other great performers of the time. As I recall the Beatles held Roy Orbison in the highest regard. Thanks
Thanks for the suggestions, Brenda!
We saw McCartney live a few years ago. I was 70 and Paul is older than me. I've been to dozens of shows with almost every artist on my bucket list. I've seen a number of them in their post-group personas: David Crosby, Graham Nash, Justin Hayward, John Oates, Paul Simon for example. McCartney playing before 30,000 people (that's all the venue could hold), was magical. He played and he played and he played, never losing energy or enthusiasm. He was having a ball. He went for 3 hours till he was forced to stop. The crowd was with him till the end. They would have stayed longer. And when it was done, I was thinking, why didn't he play this? Why didn't he play that? Three hours of solid music and he had more to give. He was amazing.
yes I love his soft timbre and approach...when he hits on mixed and head voice
👍
Thank you.
Paul was a perfectionist to the point of irritating the other Beatles. But, that is also why he is so iconic and took the group where it went. Can still sing as well as he did in his 20's. He's really one of a kind.
He has that spirit... passion in singing love of life, thanks for the video !
Sana Rachid ❤️
I find it amazing how different he sounds on each song. It's almost like he has 4 to 8 different singing voices. I've met a few people who thought he was overrated until I start naming the songs that they didn't realize were written and performed by him.
Rock on!
They way you sum up singers and music is magical in itself ken
Thank you, Jon!
I love Paul’s contributions to the Beatles but the first of his song to me is “(I Want to) Come Home” that he wrote and sang for the 2009 movie “Everybody’s Fine”! To me it captures and exemplifies Paul’s PASSION which is what I think makes him such a Great Singer!! 😎
Michael Heidle 👍
One of my very first favs as a kid . so many more for me to come. Thanks ken
I'm glad you enjoyed in, Jon!
Love the comments from Ken. Professional!!👍🏼
I appreciate that!
PAUL IS SUCH A BADASS!!!
Awesome!
Any chance you could do Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day? Dude has kept his voice in shape even into his early 50s
Thanks for the suggestion. I have done a reaction video on Green Day.
I also have recited that Mad magazine verse to friends! As for Macca, he has been called the man of a thousand voices. SO many songs come to mind. I'm a child of the 60's and feel extremely lucky to have lived through that golden age :-)
Oh wow Paul 💗 thanks Ken 👏I think he's the man of a thousand voices ( from The Fool On The Hill )
He's great!
he was and is amazing Ken-big fan always :)
He sure is!
Gracias por esto!!!! Me encantó!!!
Thank you.
He changes his voice according to the song. That's why I LOVE PAUL!
Thanks for weighing in, Brian!
McCartney is the best singer and songwriter of the last 100 years. His voice is treasure.
I agree!
Saw Paul back in 2015 and he was awesome!
Can't wait to hear Ken sing maybe I'm amazed
Hope you enjoyed it! czcams.com/video/JYQ6jfg7bF0/video.html
I agree with you Ken . I like his lyrics/songwriting the best . He is a great singer as well . These days he's absolutely my favorite from the Beatles. Your videos are really helpful . they keep me thinking of a good variety so I don't get stuck in a rut . thanks alot 👍😀👍
Thanks for listening!
I always liked the diverse and different styles he written and played in over the years
For sure. Thanks Keith!
Brother Man thank you for takin' on Sir Paul and giving your critique. He was the one that influenced me to play bass! If he asked you for help to regain the quality he had as much as is possible back in '76 what would be your 1st suggestion? I ask as a BIG Paul fan and have often wondered about that. Cheers! 👍
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Louis!
Amazing musician and songwriter.
I dont think he is the best vocalist to be honest, but because of the songwriting he is in the top 10 of all times.
Erik S. Lundestad 👍
At last Ken! I been asking for The Beatles reaction, at least you talk about Paul today. I saw him in concert like 7 or 8 years ago, he was almost 70 at the time, and it was incredible the energy and the voice for the age and the journey of the man. A sold out of 20,000 persons singing his songs, a true legend! (now you owe us the rest of the Beatles 🙂)
Rock on!
Some of my favorite Gearge Harrison guitar leads (Taxman, Good Morning Girl) were actually Paul! What amazing song writing, a hook-meister! Every song is perfect to itself. The Beatles is what got me playing guitar and being a musician.
May the VOICE be with you! Allways :)
I see what you did there. 👍
Paul is "un Beatleable"!
Lovely video, great analysis of a pop god. I like your relaxed way of presenting, subbed!
Welcome aboard!
“Call Me Back Again”, from “Venus and Mars”

Btw love your videos💯
Thank you so much 😀
maybe I'm Amazed is one of my all-time favorites. The lyrics and the piano are spot on. I think sincerity when I think of Paul.
Tracy Zimmerman 👍👍👍
Lovley video! Would be nice to see a video like this on Billy Preston! :D
Thank you.
His soft singing and ability to scream so well is amazing. He has such a heart and soul and he's very talented. His yelling and screaming in songs is like no other and I'll miss him when he's not here anymore. 😢 and I love the frenetic sound he has too.
😊 Thanks for listening!
Oh, i was dying for this one. I love Paul McCartney, my favorite voice in The Beatles, i love Wings and his solo works and i love your videos.
Awesome!
Beware My Love and Soily Live 1976 Rockshow is incredible, Relentless Power and Intensity!

Great player, amazing singer. What you didn't cover was harmony singing, which was awesome inspiring!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Could go a long way with those pipes.
I think you may be right... 😀
A little known song but very very powerful in terms of his 'hard' style of vocalizing is 'Oh Woman Oh Why' from the 'Ram' era just fantastic. I love his voice control when he sings and screams at the same time. I think his ultimate triumph' in this regard is "Oh Darling' from Abbey Rd just phenomenal.
Thanks for weighing in, Slater!
What else can you say ? He has it all . Ob Darling is phenomenal
He's great!
thank you greatly!!!!!!
You're welcome, Jarod!

Ken, hell yesssss! You put a smile on my face. The analysis is first-rate. I absorb in watching your vids. You absolutely blew me away!
Wishing you the best. 👍🏻🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥💯
I consider the very much alive Paul to be the most important figure culturally in the whole world .Thks for the presentation Ken I think the gift of your own outstanding vocal range comes down to you having a whole lotta soul
Thank you.
El hombre de las mil voces!
Surprisingly in the UK, a lot of younger people have put him down over the last 25-30 years, their complaint being he's 'dominated' the scene for so long, and then they take every opportunity to criticise him. I'm sure that's a problem exclusive to super-stars, but it makes me sad. His music is largely timeless, melodic, brilliant and extremely popular. He's also a very nice and down-to-earth bloke and that often doesn't tick boxes these days. He was a musical hero to me from 1964 when I was 5 years old, and continues to be so. Many thanks for your analysis.
Thank you, Peter. Rock on!
We have to Ken. It's far more enjoyable. 😊
@@777petew That's right!
Hey, Ken I would love it if you did John Lennon
Thanks for the suggestion!
