What Makes This Singer Great? Paul McCartney
He wrote songs that made the whole world sing and we're still singing his songs more than 50 years later.
Paul McCartney's name is certainly synonymous with greatness both as part of the Beatles and as a solo artist.
Not only is Paul a great singer but his songwriting abilities are like very few others and his songwriting collaboration with John Lennon is still the most successful in music history.
A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he always had a knack for creating catchy melodies and telling great stories through his songs.
Today we'll explore a variety of performances from Paul displaying his varied styles and approaches. I'll be sharing my thoughts of what I think made him great and I'd love to hear your thoughts as well. Please make sure to let me know in the comments!

There are a number of music legends who have either died, retired from performing, or became recluses, and then there's Sir Paul McCartney. His career has lasted more than six decades from when he first joined John Lennon's band the Quarrymen to right now at age 77. Also, Paul's work as a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and actor (remember Give My Regards To Broad Street?) has stood the test of time, and his voice is still as strong and potent today as it was when he debuted as a member of the Beatles.

He is the greatest singer all around the world. Paul McCarteny has a very pleasant voice, silky, caressing. He sings beautifully both deeper and higher tones, and easily, without effort. Which is not the case for many singers. Some singers work very hard to sing critical voices. A lot of people confuse their live music with the songs they record on discs. This should not be done to the person who loves music, to the person who understands music. Sir Paul always gives the maximum. He is always striving for maximum. That’s a great virtue for Paul McCartney. Sir Paul also plays at least 25 different instruments.

Thanks for the video. I think of McCartney singing "Long Tall Sally", "Yesterday", and "I'm Down" at the same concert. His vocal range is incredible. His ability to harmonize is second to none. They used 4 track recorders, not 2000 track recorders with unlimited effect units. Their live performances are also incredible, especially since they couldn't hear each other. I also think of The Beatles recording an album in one day. They recorded the album "Let it Be" in 15 days, and 30 days later they began recording "Abbey Road". Had they spent 3 years between albums and had the use of state-of-art recording studios, their vocals would had been better (lol).

My favourite Beatle as a teenager. Back then (the 90s) there was a common, somewhat insidious feeling that McCartney was "not cool". I remember that from college. That Macca nickname for instance, was used to make fun of him. They called him naff (you know, lame) because of Silly Love Songs and those other sentimental pieces. Oh and the Frog Chorus.
I always used to retort - you know, you're judging him by standards HE SET HIMSELF. He set the bar, you know. Along with the other Beatles.

I've seen a number of them in their post-group personas: David Crosby, Graham Nash, Justin Hayward, John Oates, Paul Simon for example. McCartney playing before 30,000 people (that's all the venue could hold), was magical. He played and he played and he played, never losing energy or enthusiasm. He was having a ball. He went for 3 hours till he was forced to stop. The crowd was with him till the end. They would have stayed longer. And when it was done, I was thinking, why didn't he play this? Why didn't he play that? Three hours of solid music and he had more to give. He was amazing.

I also have recited that Mad magazine verse to friends! As for Macca, he has been called the man of a thousand voices. SO many songs come to mind. I'm a child of the 60's and feel extremely lucky to have lived through that golden age :-)

Brother Man thank you for takin' on Sir Paul and giving your critique. He was the one that influenced me to play bass! If he asked you for help to regain the quality he had as much as is possible back in '76 what would be your 1st suggestion? I ask as a BIG Paul fan and have often wondered about that. Cheers! 👍

I dont think he is the best vocalist to be honest, but because of the songwriting he is in the top 10 of all times.

At last Ken! I been asking for The Beatles reaction, at least you talk about Paul today. I saw him in concert like 7 or 8 years ago, he was almost 70 at the time, and it was incredible the energy and the voice for the age and the journey of the man. A sold out of 20,000 persons singing his songs, a true legend! (now you owe us the rest of the Beatles 🙂)

Some of my favorite Gearge Harrison guitar leads (Taxman, Good Morning Girl) were actually Paul! What amazing song writing, a hook-meister! Every song is perfect to itself. The Beatles is what got me playing guitar and being a musician.

His soft singing and ability to scream so well is amazing. He has such a heart and soul and he's very talented. His yelling and screaming in songs is like no other and I'll miss him when he's not here anymore. 😢 and I love the frenetic sound he has too.

A little known song but very very powerful in terms of his 'hard' style of vocalizing is 'Oh Woman Oh Why' from the 'Ram' era just fantastic. I love his voice control when he sings and screams at the same time. I think his ultimate triumph' in this regard is "Oh Darling' from Abbey Rd just phenomenal.

Surprisingly in the UK, a lot of younger people have put him down over the last 25-30 years, their complaint being he's 'dominated' the scene for so long, and then they take every opportunity to criticise him. I'm sure that's a problem exclusive to super-stars, but it makes me sad. His music is largely timeless, melodic, brilliant and extremely popular. He's also a very nice and down-to-earth bloke and that often doesn't tick boxes these days. He was a musical hero to me from 1964 when I was 5 years old, and continues to be so. Many thanks for your analysis.
