Man Paul has became my favorite beatle with time. His legacy is huge I mean and he keeps on going. Well balanced artist all over , the guy meditates for sure.
Thanks for this great vocal analysis. Band On The Run is a great album from beginning to end, and Jet is it great track that stands out from the rest of the record. Nice to hear how strong Paul's voice is and how spot on his pitch is!
Total classic. Very cool to hear all of those added touches on the isolated track…you don’t really notice them when just listening to the full song, but once you do hear them, you realize just how much they add. Thanks for sharing this, Ken!
All those extra bits I just never picked up on. How his mind must work. Amazing. Thank you for the analysis Ken. It's so much more with your wealth of knowledge to add to it.
After having listened to several hours of content, I can see this is an unparalleled resource for vocal learning. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge not only about singing but also the recording process! If I could offer one tiny suggestion- the word "right" is occasionally overused. Your knowledge and quality of content stand on their own.
What makes this album more amazing is that it was recorded with only three band members playing on it. Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine. The guitarist and drummer left the group prior to it’s recording. Paul ended up playing bass, percussion, drums and most of the lead guitar. What a talent.
Great job Ken . My first favorite tune by Paul McCartney (post Beatles) was 1975s "Listen to what the man says" . I was 12yrs old then but still like that song from the VENUS AND MARS album , if my memory is correct.
Besides all that what Paul McCartney is (one of the greatest songwriters in history - that includes the classical ones, a fantastic bass player, a mastermind in production, an innovator during his Beatles period in the Sixties) let‘s not forget that he is an incredible singer! That he proved especially during his solo career: songs like „Jet“, „Maybe I‘m amazed“ and „Let me roll it“ show him in his prime as a singer! To me the singer Paul McCartney is often overshadowed by the songwriter. But in the seventies with the large Wings tours he seemed to find his identity as a singer. Listen to the „Wings over America“ album. His singing is simply unparalleled. I never worked with a male singer that came even close to his range. Let‘s not take this for granted, folks!
Man Ken, you struck a heartstring with me with this video. All things Beatles and Paul Mc will get me singing and Jet is one of my most loved song from him (my wife loves "Silly Love Songs"). I was even singing along with your video. I love you Ken and Sammy and Big Brutha (Michael Sweet), Sorry but Paul is one of my Fave screamers. Much Love.
I always loved Paul's music. My Mom was crazy over his music, and song writing skills. He is one of my musical influences. I think that it is funny that he had all of those marching sounds, etc. in the song but you really can't hear it unless you are listening really hard. Maybe they did stuff like that to get you to pay closer attention to the song?
Hey Ken, this may be an odd question but do you remember where you got that picture of Steve Perry singing in the room behind you from, because I love it Keep up the work and cheers from Germany
Beatles were before my time but I loved Wings and solo Paul. If you haven't seen it, check out the Rockshow video. It was the first VHS tape I rented in about 1985 or 86.
Awesome Ken deep dive , I just adore Paul! You got me considering trying this in my solo acoustic set. Some people think my version of "Listen what the man says" doesn't suck
Good stuff Ken! More McCartney coverage, now you are really tugging on my heart strings lol. Always thought his vocal on this sounded like it was mixed through some kind of notch filter. The album has sort of a low-fi sound in general which adds to it's character imo.
Both Paul and Lennon, were such generously abundant songwriters!!! The vocals on Jets are really cool, especially the Harmonies… Yes, I can see where the comparison to : “Live And Let Die” comes from… Btw: I love that song, and it’s orchestrated parts….
Hey Ken, big fan. It would be so cool if you could look at the live version of this.Wings over America. No double tracking. At times he is very slightly off pitch, by slightly I mean it barely registers to my ear. He also improvs a lot, and I think the improvisations give a good glimpse into the original composition of this song before he had to get it "studio ready". I do not know if it is copy protected or not. Very rarely do I hear a live recording that is better than the studio. IMO this whole album (Wings over America) is better than the studio versions. Greetings from the 'burbs of Houston
Recorded in Lagos Africa, Paul saw there was an EMI studio there...Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough didn't want to go to Africa and quit the band...all music was performed by Paul, Linda and Denny Laine, with some overdubs added in much later in London.. it was hurricane season, Paul and Linda were ribbed at knife point ( might have been gunpoint, I can't remember) and the thives took all the demos... found out when they got there, there was an outbreak of Cholera....Paul said it was a real fight to make that album
Thanks, Ken! What might be interesting is hearing your take on Linda's background vocal work on this and other Wings tunes we all know. Most of us are familiar with the live take of "Hey Jude" where some smart guy soloed her vocal channel, which turned out to be, um, "interesting" let's just say that. But did she have decent singing skills in the studio?
Dear Ken: Loooonnnggg time subscriber here. Yes, we do have to explain to the 'youngsters' who the seminal greats are. I'm 61, fighting Stage IV Metastatic Prostate & Bone Cancer. As a drummer & percussionist 1st, followed by a good basic grounding in keys, guitar, bass & a love for *_ALL_***, as FZ (Frank Zappa) said, to ONE of the TWO 'Muziks' "good" & "bad", lol... I.E., the "GOOD" music. That's all the kind of music you cover, along with others like Rick Beato. Notice I didn't include "singer" in my list of musical training, as that training was informal & sketchy at best. Fortunately, I *was* able to sing somewhat on pitch naturally, and I nearly always got the job as "THAT DRUMMER THAT SINGS!", lol. No Don Henley am I, but close enough for the semi-pro set that played weekly 'house-gigs' back when that was a thing. You're an ageless wonder with you voice & a constant inspiration- especially on the bad cancer days. Much Peace, Ken. You deserve it! 👨🎤
Paul changes his voice to fit the song. In this song is brassy like the sax’s. When he recorded Oh Darling he got into the studio before the band and roughed up his voice.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the individual Beatles, as a band. And for their solo work. Paul ALMOST sounds current, but, he's too organic. Not plastic. I'm not sure a 30yo McCartney could stand tie to toe with an Ed Sheeran, or even the tattoo face ( insert adjective ) Post Malone, with today's production preferences by young listeners. But there is no denying his musicianship, writing, arranging, production of the time, voice, singing, innovation, and engaging entertainer skills. There's a lot to be learned from the trailblazers.
Who doesn't know who Paul McCartney is come on lol Could you please do some Billy Idol like Rebel Yell, A-ha-Hunting High + Low the single version that was remixed not the album version!
Wings was too "bubble gum" for me, but Paul is an amazing vocalist and one of the best popular song writers in history. BTW, try singing Paul's part in "I've Got a Feeling" ... I dare you.
@@kentamplin it's all good Ken I didn't know if I had my memory was failing. Lol There's an interesting story with that about some crime syndicate or thieves - (whatever they were) in Lagos stealing Paul McCartney's tapes when he and his wife and band were recording that album there.
Hey, Ken. I have wanted to ask you about some singing stuff. Where can I ask them? If here is okay, here’s my question; I have a lot of trouble to sing good on my own, but when I put on a song and sing along, I breathe good, sing good and I can sing for hours, but when I do it myself, my throat hurts, I have bad singing technique. How do I fix that? I have tried for so long
Benjamin: Seriously, I sang semi-pro for 10+ years in bands as a drummer & even some of Ken's 'demo' vids are helpful. His Course, however: Absolutely on a different level altogether. Singing is an art backed by the science of the human physiology, and Ken is a freakin' PhD of Vocal Mastery!!! I wish you a happy singing journey!!!
Nice to hear a deeper review of Jet which is my least favorite track of the album, maybe because it got so burnt out back in the day. The harmonies are insane! So McCartney! Personally, I thought Linda gave Wings that distinctive sound to the band to distinguish it from Beatles harmonies. ❤️❤️❤️
khoury2000; I thought exactly the same! So glad Ken had these vocal 'stubs' I think they're called? I never heard any of those small, buried details, which contain a lot of the mystery & excitement to those of us who care about these types of things... I ALWAYS go back & listen to the songs in thier original context & hear those details. Good Fun!
Yeah no one or at least very few seem to put the work into their craft as that generation did. Musically as well as lyrically. Either that or everyone is settling for less.
Loved Paul McCartney and wings Ken
I absolutely love Paul McCartney ❣️
Amazing what he pulled off recording in a shack of a studio in Nigeria with the 3 members, then to become one of his best selling albums!
That whole album is fantastic
Man Paul has became my favorite beatle with time. His legacy is huge I mean and he keeps on going. Well balanced artist all over , the guy meditates for sure.
Certainly. He also stands on his head in his 80s🙂
Paul is such a prolific song writer, and who could sing to boot!. Enjoyed this immensely, Ken!
Thanks for this great vocal analysis. Band On The Run is a great album from beginning to end, and Jet is it great track that stands out from the rest of the record. Nice to hear how strong Paul's voice is and how spot on his pitch is!

Wasn't expecting all those "hidden" sounds, though; never picked up on those in the final version! Very cool.
Thanks Ken
Very good! 😍😍👏👏👏👏
Thank you, sir. Much appreciated :)🤩🥰✨

Paul McCartney (and the wings) are one of the few off shoots of great band to be so great themselves. I would add Phil Collins post genesis. Etc.
Makes me wonder how much better some very successful songs, such as Jet, might be if the words were as magical as the melody.
I think the song is about Paul meeting Linds'a Father, the dog story is I'm thinking a myth

The opening of Jet always reminds me of Little Eva's Locomotion.
Most of the album was recorded in Lagos, but Jet was recorded in at Abbey Road Studios.

Let me Roll It is their best song
There is a theory that Jet is about David Bowie, with the Major and the Suffragette, as well as the "thought the Major was a lady".
