I absolutely LOVE the use of groundcover on this property instead of piles of mulch! We need more knowledgable designers like you - that garden looks like it has always been there which is the way it should be! Beautiful!

Jack, you must be so proud of your crew and yourself, the work you do is so magnificent. You can tell you really love your job and it shows. This cottage is beautiful with the rock work that you've done and all the colorful annuals, love the 3 tiers at the front of the cottage. Very well thought out but then again you are the Master Gardener. Keep your hands dirty.

I watched a documentary on Earthing and the healing properties of walking barefoot on ground. Someone commented that must be why gardeners are so relaxed because we have our hands in soil all the time. I eventually have to take off my gloves when I garden. It's more comfortable for me.

Love the continuity of the limestone throughout the project-these properties are just outstanding. I have several dwarf blue spruce on our property-my Dad was a nurseryman and grew them from cuttings. He chose to make cuttings from only the bluest of specimens. They are my pride and joy, but here on the west coast, everything grows so quickly and they are in need of pruning. A how-to video would be so valuable. I hope you can share this knowledge with us.

Hi Jack. Would love it if you would go into some of the construction details of things like those dry stack walls. What kind of foundation work do you need to do? What are the important details that keep walls like this standing for decades? I think they are so beautiful.

Yes! I wasn't aware it could be pruned. I have a new weeping 'The Blues' Colorado blue spruce that claims to stay about 6' tall and 4' wide, but I don't trust the tag and want to know how to size check it if it gets unruly.
I had a standard that got out of hand so I chopped it down. The top filled the back of my brother's pickup truck. It even rolled out of his truck when we brought it to my municipal yard waste site despite being tied in.

Absolutely amazing Jack! We live 45 minutes away in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada and so what I appreciate is the fact that we share the same zone for the most part (4b). We live on a ravine and my husband and I have been thinking about building a stone walkway. Any chance that you would create a video building a walkway in the future? We have some beautiful natural stones such as red sandstone, etc. that we could actually get our hands on. I have been fortunate enough to visit beautiful Mackinaw. I actually became familiar with Laura from Garden Answer videos and that is how I stumbled across your wonderful channel. Thank you for these beautiful tours.

Beautiful property! I'd be really interested to see your team prep/plant up a large scale ground cover area. I like the natural look plants create vs. the mulch look, but I'm intimidated by trying to do it. I'm afraid I'll get a ground cover established only to have it choke out my expensive perennials, or not thrive well and have a weeding nightmare. You make it look so easy though!😁 Thanks for another awesome tour!

I love your channel. I started binge watching it a couple of days ago. I do have a question on garden maintenance though. How do you maintain the grass on Mackinac Island? Do you use scythes, push rotary mowers, or do the horses just graze the grass? I would think gas powered or riding mowers would be forbidden (because of the noise) but I may be wrong.

I love dark foliage mixed among greens. And I love saying "Cimicifuga Racemosa." I think mine is called 'Brunette.' I planted a "Black Lace Elderberry" this year among a hedge (potentially) of mixed hydrangea. I imagine this new garden will be so beautiful come about five years from now.
Jack, you seemed to pause near the arborvitae hedge as if you wanted to say something about it. Twelve years ago, I planted four 'Degroots' at the end of my west-facing deck for privacy and shade. I now know I should have been pruning/training them all along. I have multiple leaders and the arborvitae wall is at least 10' tall. Would you recommend I top it off as the hedge in this landscape? It's starting to show holes and I'm not ready for the one-cut prune as the stumps would be massive to hide. (I also may have a marsupial living in it or under my deck as I see small greenery in the area around it and my deck has become its latrine.)

  • @MichiganRocks

Hey Jack, I have a couple questions about the myrtle and other ground covers. How close do you plant them together? I find that myrtle takes a lot of weeding for the first few years. Also, do you fertilize it, and if so, with what? I have some older beds that are starting to get a little thin.

I bought a 6-pack on sale from Bachman's several years ago and they're finally starting to thicken in under my hydrangea standard. (Probably poorly placed due to the shallow roots of my standard.) I may be replacing that hydrangea with a 'Limelight' or something newer like that. This 'PeeGee' is showing its age.
