Thanks Jeff for taking the time to make these videos.
Your welcome!
@@jeffescortlx sir, please make new video how to repair or replace the Odometer LCD display of Hyundai i20 2011.
@@tnamen1307 I just work on GM, Ford and Chrysler.
Job done Excellent as usual, thanks for your time for making this videos.
I'm looking forward for more videos 👍👍👍
Your work is just amazing.
Been watching for several years and I love every video. Also nice to see your comment on the SMA video regarding the ford cluster.😎
I have watched you work for years and have to say as I watch some of the other channels that do electronic repair I cringe because I immediately think of your micro soldering abilities and how their board level repair abilities pales in comparison. As usual there was interesting info and amazing talent shared with us and I wish to thank you for the ride along, the time it takes to create this content, edit and UL it for us mere mortals :)
Thank you for the soldering compliment!
Great work Jeff always learn from you
GM quality, because those bulbs are under the odometer and extremely difficult to change, they couldn't install LEDs at the factory. I'm liking the newer cars less and less. Good video, thank you.
What are you on about? They were soldered in, changing a soldered in LED is the exact skill level as soldering in in incandescent light… unless you look to apparently future cars if this is “new” to you where the leds are the size on an atom yeah, that’s a different story.
Also, what does that have to do with the factory not being able to do it? They would obviously put the bulbs in first before the display… 😮 amazing. Wow, it’s amazing they put all those components in this screwed together cluster unit! How did they do that! They must have some magical machinery! No way they built it from the bottom up! That’s silly!!! They screwed and clipped the cluster together then put the circuit board in there. Duh, it’s like building a house, you put the roof on before putting the walls or supporting structure up! Keep the workers dry while they do that!!!!🙄
Also also, “new clusters bad, you can’t replace the bulbs easily like we could in the 80s” well that depends I know unscrewing a bulb is a lot for your boomer mind, but most anyone who davels in repair from the newer generations can replace soldered lights, sure it’s not as easy but it’s a skill that since technology has been in our lives we’re much more akin to knowing how to do that. Kinda like you guys and ruining the economy it just came easy to you.
Also also also… even with bulbs that are easily replaceable in the cluster still no one does it I have not seen in my life an older Chevy with proper (not China led garbage replacements), or fully functional lighting. Not once. Even though it’s literally as easy as unscrewing a lightbulb. So, since no one is gona bother fixing it, why make it easy to fix and instead use equipment that most of the time will FAR exceed a vehicle’s lifespan.
Also also also also, wait till you hear about way way in the future (2020+) cars that it’s literally just a “Picture Box”.
Thanks for the great video. I miss your "shipping guy" (the cat). Hope's he's ok. This was really fun to watch.
Cats are always napping nearby. I'll get them in the next video!
Great video! Thanks Jeff!
Great video Jeff!
really nice work.thank
Any thoughts on a sudden, short instance of entire cluster freaking out on 04 Buick PA while driving? Returned to normal within 10 seconds with no stall or loss of pwr steering, brakes etc.
When I replaced my burnt bulbs with LEDs in my 02 impala, those bulbs did not wanna just snap off like that, they disintegrated when I touched them lmfao. Nice video dude, I think I heard thunder in the background so this was quite the relaxing video.
Yes, some car clusters have through-hole light bulbs that need to be desoldered to be removed. While others are surface mount and can be snapped off. And yes, I noticed the thunder during editing lol
@@jeffescortlx I just went and edited the video from when I did it and realized thats exactly the case, they were through-hole vias not just pads up top. I Just came back to update my comment to reflect that and saw you replied, but I never got a notification for it so thanks CZcams lol.
very good video, thank you
Can you link the warm white LED's you are using? I know you linked them in one of your older videos but I can't find it :/
Hello Jeff. Thank you for your hard work.
Please tell me the brand of the main processor and whether it is possible to flash it.
It's probably a Motorola. And while it is possible to flash one, I don't have the step by step directions to do so. Check out the channel fixed until broken.
Hi jeff I have a 07 ford explorer I buy and noticed the person I bought it from took the abs light off is there a video you remember you done on how to fix an issue like that
I'm sorry but I don't have a video on that repair specifically.
Good job 👍
Somethings fishy here, (not with you Jeff or your video). I haven't been notified of any videos from you in months, however I was watching Erik O, South Main Auto and he was having a cluster issue with an 08 F150. I thought, just thought mind you, you should send it to Jeff. Low and behold up pops one of your videos. Google must have mind reading software.
Yeah just the new Google AI mind reading software doing it's thing.
Oddly enough I thought the exact same thing when Eric was talking about sending the cluster off 😂
@@focusedelectronics I should really watch his channel more often.
That's funny, I watching that same video today and when Erik got to the cluster I realized I haven't seen any videos from that guy that repairs them in some time. Had to do a search because I couldn't remember the channel name but here I am with some catching up to do.
Lol I just posted a comment on that video telling Eric to come here and learn how easy it is to reflow some joints.
Tip: Gravity. Put the pins horizontal and suck, less work for the gun. Also helps to apply fresh solder.
Yes all good advice. This process went smoothly without any difficulties.
When I'm teaching people how to solder, I always tell them that gravity can be your best friend!
@@jeffescortlx was a wonderful video :)
@@rpsmith yes when I'm hot airing a HDMI port off I'll flip the board upsidedown and heat the back side, it will normally just fall out when the solder is melted.
Hi Jeff I like to thank you for your videos, they really help a lot of us
Have you ever had repaired a2002 - 03 Ram cluster not powering up? I heard someone on a video saying that it was a mosfet but didn’t show it 😢
I did reflow the entire circuit board back and front but still not working I found another one at a salvage yard and seems to starting to have issues too
This one has like a minute delay to turn on and once on the gauges backlight flikers.
Please let me know if something can be done
Good 👍 bless 🙏
I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with that cluster with that issue currently.
Okay Thanks Jeff
Not worth pulling the old bulbs under the DIC so they match?
I'm not sure what you mean?
The displays don't really match on this model because they used 3 different style of displays, the left one is VFD, the top is LED back lit LCD and bottom right incandescent lit LCD.
I have a question. Is it a mistake to swap EPROMs from a different cluster?
It is fine to do as long as it is from the same model.
Sir where can i buy only the Odometer LCD Display of Hyundai i20 2011?
eBay?
Can you give us a link for the damping oil you use? Love the vids!! Thanks.
This cluster doesn't use damping oil.
@@jeffescortlx sorry, 100% my fault. I was watching a few different videos. I was asking because I just watched a vid for a 1999 Chevy Silverado 1500 with air core motors. You were sucking some air out with a syringe then adding some more oil in. I think that might be what my instrument panel needs.
@@jimbo1326 this video here goes into detail on the oil:

@@jeffescortlx You're the best!! Thanks man.
Dear Jeff, I am having the first problem that you commented. I have an error but my heat and fuel gauge do not work. If I use my scan tool I can sweep them up and down no problem and I am getting a U1000-13 code. I put a new BCM in it and it is registering okay but I also can't seem to program the keys as I get a set of 2 - 4 chimes when trying to program. Could the PCM be the problem? I don't have a lot of cash to take it into the shop and I need to get this fixed for my son. Any help of your knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks Bruce
Sounds like the vehicle is having communication issues. The cluster is probably showing the symptoms but not necessarily the cause.
@@jeffescortlx I know right! I retired from the military and was a 62b heavy equipment construction repair but I never got into the electrical stuff. I have a xtool D7 smart diagnosis system and it shows the new BCM is okay but I'm getting the u1000-13 code for the supplemental inflatable restraint, seat memory module, instrument cluster and theft deterrent. Is there any suggestions you could give me? Could the PCM be causing the problem I'm having here or do you think there might be a ground or wire problem? Greatly appreciate any assistance you could help me with your knowledge. Thanks again Bruce
@@fonzie401 start unplugging any and all modules that have anything to do with the serial data bus. Keep on unplugging things until the communication problem goes away then you found your culprit.
@@jeffescortlx thanks! I'll let you know when I figure it out. 👍
@@fonzie401 Did you ever figure this out?
8:29 are these LEDs with a built-in resistor ?
Yes.
@@jeffescortlx thought as much or they would've a very short life :D
Hi I am having this problem now with my Buick Rendezvous showing error. Once it comes out of error and shows the miles, it starts up sometimes. What could be my issue? My temperature gaze and stuff works.
When it says error the gas gauge and temp gauge read accurately?
It says gas low even when I have a half or full tank on error. The temp gauge reads right. Sometimes, it comes out of error quick and starts. Sometimes, it takes awhile. I have to turn my switch on to see it comes out of error to miles to start it.
@@veronicamcmillian6907two things can cause it to say error:
1: corrupted eeprom. But this can't be your cause because you says it comes out of error and shows you the miles.
2: No bus communication. But this can't be your issue because you said the temp gauge works, if the temp gauge is working that means it has bus communication.
please make videos on hyundai cars too.
I'm having a problem gas guage and rest of cluster flashes on and off while driving
Yes sometimes that can happen.
I am your new subscriber today.
sir, please make new video how to repair or replace the Odometer LCD display of Hyundai i20 2011.
I just work on GM, Ford and Chrysler.
@@jeffescortlx ok. There are only 3 missing segments on the odometer lcd display of my i20 2011. But Hyundai is selling the entire instrument cluster unit which costs rs. 10k in India. So it's not worth buying for just small issue.
@@jeffescortlx I have not found any lcd display for separate buy on the internet. Very sad.
Odd how the eprom gets corrupted, a random write from the micro?
That desolder gun must of made your job so less stressfull.
No messing around with a solder sucker that jams up if you stair at it too hard :-D
If that desolder gun was around when i was replacing chips in old 8bit computers, i would have
enjoyed it more.
But in my 20's i was rather determined to get the job done the hard way.
Stubborn sod lol.
Yes the electric desoldering tool is a game changer. As you know removing components (especially through hole with multiple leads) is the most challenging part of PCB repair. But this tool makes it so much easier.
Eeproms aren't perfect. They also fail in TV's and computers regularly. The odometer value is typically stored in three different sections of the Eeprom and compared the value to each other to help cut down on errors. But sometimes that just isn't enough.
@@jeffescortlx Three sections, the power of 3 is handy but i would want three seperate eeproms.
Never trust 1 chip.... you end up eating them all, sorry silly mind :-D
Jeff

No inside joke. Just bad dad humor.
@@jeffescortlx I can relate! I torment my kids with dad humor every day!

The vehicle doesn't need the instrument cluster to start. You probably have something shorting out the bus line and that is why the instrument cluster cannot communicate to the vehicle and showing you the error message.
I don't think God had much to do with it, thank you. Praise God for you.
Rodriguez lol
