    2005 Pontiac GP cluster: I've have problems with intermittent cluster connections in the past. I replaced the clusters and it's been 98% fine. But, I had been thinking I was wrong all that time i.e. some bad connection. Now, with this video I'll have to see some other time if other clusters are still good. Thanks.

    Would love to have the multimeter. I have been trying to learn all I can about the different uses of multimeter and different types of meters to understand what each of the setting do and how to use them to be if it is in differ ways we never realized. For that reason alone I find myself watching videos from some channels that normally I would have no desire to know about what they are fixing but do have a desire to find out the added values of tools we already own I hope this made sense of what I am referring too. Thanks for posting the videos you do.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  Před 11 měsíci +1

      By the time I got my hands on schematics, I had already had a good idea on how everything worked and where everything was by reverse engineering. I can also use a good board to compare against a bad board. Component identification works for about 60%, but they like to use a lot of house numbers that don't cross to what they really are.

    • @scott79transam
      @scott79transam Před 11 měsíci

    I’ve been watching your videos and learning a lot. Makes me want to try fixing mine on a 2010 Nissan Titan. Just ordered a new stepper for the fuel gauge it’s always reading high not sure if that is the actual problem yet

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  Před 11 měsíci

      For the Nissan it's probably not the stepper motor. But a self sweep test will confirm quickly and easily. The Nissan's calculate the fuel level at the instrument cluster like Fords do. It's common for them to have fractured solder joints in the resistor network that reads the fuel level. There's also a chance it's a sending unit, but a good scan tool should be able to read the sending unit.

    • @jeffescortlx

      Thank you for the response! It’s an intermittent loss of comm with those right 4 gauges at the same time and battery/abs light. I sent it to a cluster repair guy who reflowed all caps and put new steppers but that didn’t fix it. Do you think it’s a solder joint on a chip then? I’m at a loss

It’s completely random when it happens and only at start up then will clear up whenever it wants lol. All I know is the voltage regulator in mine is 180 degrees the opposite direction of the one in your video here. Are there any giveaways that it’d be a 2004? • @jeffescortlx

      @@chrispekas4387since you're voltage regulator is facing the other direction it is safe to assume that it would be a 2003-2004 PCB design. So it will be different than the one in this video. Either the problem is local to the instrument cluster, or the entire vehicle is losing buss communication and the clusters just the symptom of the vehicle having the problem rather than the source of causing the problem.

    Hey, Hi! I would like to see if you could repair my cluster. It’s from a 2010 Chevy, long story short sometimes it would run fine or sometime it just wouldn’t turn on till it stop turning on, so for the last year or so I’ve been using another one that my friend got for me for a really low low price. I could actually send you the one I have on now after and you could use it for parts or what not.

      If it works when hot, but not when cold then this is from the batch of 2008+ that have defective microprocessors. Unfortunately I'm not currently setup to replace this chip that requires flashing.

      @@jeffescortlx oh no it was intermittent. I seen another cluster you fix but I can’t remember the exact year and it was a while back that I had seen it but it had same issues exactly like mine.

    Well done, another cluster back from the jaws of death :-D.
    Current shunts in meters are quite forgiving.
