Porsche 993 - Belts, fan, alternator replacement

  • This video is a doozie. It started out as just replacing the belts but turned into replacing the fan bearing, then identifying stress fractures in the fan and having to replace that. To make sure the alternator wasn’t part of the problem, we had that looked at and that resulted in a rebuild. A few weeks for parts and alternator rebuild and we’re in for almost $1,000….. ouch

    I just got finished doing the fan replacement and alternator removal and am ready to put the belts back on. Nice clear instructions that I'm sure will make my day go much better. Thanks for posting.

    Very good video except for the missing parts but that's okay it's not easy to put this all together with the camera in the right places during the wrenching. One thing I noticed is when driving the three bolts for the first belt pulley it is important to crank the engine so the belt runs up the pulley so you can tighten the three bolts every time you do this, my experience was that I'd have to do this about three times before I could tighten the bolts all the way. I bet you of you take the last two belts with the pulleys off you'll notice the three bolts to be loose. At least you won't loose them ;)

      👍That cranking detail is not shown on some other videos with the engine on you find out when u do it my outer pulley needed that

    dude im tearing my hair out, i cannot for the life of me install the alternator belt (outter belt). every time i start torqueing the 24mm nut the outter pulley half will cock it self at an angle, will not stay flush with the outter leveling spacer/washer. belt is the correct size 760mm, i even have a 763mm belt. the 760mm is a porsche belt too. The inner belt went on very easily, cant figure out why this one is giving me trouble

      I just went back and watched my video again to jog memory but I don’t remember anything weird with installing the outer belt. It went on pretty loose and by the time I pulled out the torque wrench it was already snug.

      @@beardedgarage hey thanks for replying. i was able to resolve my issue, but with a larger belt. i ended up having to use a 775mm belt (basically the same as inner belt). i used 3 shims and what do ya know.. it worked with good tension roughly 1/4" deflection with finger at mid point. I have NO IDEA why the standard 760 or 763 will not work, not even close honestly. The smaller belts were biting hard against the flat surface where the shims are, causing the outter pulley half to pivot at an angle. The original 763 belt that came off the car had good tension but get this, it was missing nearly 1/3rd the teeth (increasing the inside diameter nearly 1/4" or more..) so that 763 belt originally must have been VERY tight. absolutely bizzare.

Trying a few things to get the broken head out not much space but was thinking worst case if deep enough can i just push it in and b done

    What manufacturer , make/ model is the torque wrench you are using. Thanks

    • @beardedgarage
      @beardedgarage  Před 20 dny

      That particular one is a precision instruments torque wrench. I bought that a bunch of years ago when precision instruments still had the contract for making snap on torque wrenches. Personally I own a bunch of different brands/models/sizes

      My guess is yes, and I've heard guys trying it, but I've never done it myself. The problem I see is the room needed to work. Obviously my situation was easy because I had the engine on a stand ;)

      I honestly appreciate the feedback. We filmed the alternator removal, the bearing removal, etc. but unfortunately the camera ran out of memory during the filming and just stopped. We didn't notice until afterwards.
